IMovie, iSight, and 96 BM zero second clips...

Hi, this has never happened before, but I have a problem. I recorded some acts at an open mic with iSight and iMovie, but Imovie recognizes the clips as only zero seconds long, and the clips are all black. Nothing plays. I would assume nothing was recorded, but each clip has a differen't file size, revealed when I control click "get info". Any help would be appriciated! Thanks!
PS. I am using the latest version of imovie, and os x. I also have 768 MB of DDR SDRAM, and while I recorded using the isight I could see what I was recording in Imovie.
Finley

when I try to open one of the clips in quicktime I get this:
QuickTime cannot open the file: "Clip 13.mov"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)
apple-i says that it is a quicktime movie when the clip is on the desktop
apple-i says that it is clip 13.mov when it is in imovie, and that the duration is 0 and the size is 627 MB
I dont know what apple-j does

Basically I want to combine to clips with correct timings. For that I want to view the two clips overlapping each other, each being semitransparent to see both at the same time, so that I can decide where to stop of the first clip and start of the second clip? Thanks.

  • Audio clips show up as zero seconds (0s) when dragged to project library

I can successfully drag music from my iTunes library into the project library window, but they show up as 0s (zero second) clips no matter what the actual size. Then when I view that music in Clip Trimmer, the entire length of music shows up. Unfortunately, once I close Clip Trimmer, the clip appears to be 0s again.
This same problem shows up with any audio file, including the sound effects included with iMovie.
How can I get my audio clips or music to show up in its full length?
My version is 8.0.6 on Snow Leopard.
    Thanks!

This is happening to me too. It's driving me up the wall!

I was making a movie on iMovie, and was trying to use the green screen to make a split screen. I pressed on the green screen button, but the second clip didn't play next to the first, and only the audio played. I tried again with some different clips and some worked and some didn't. This hasn't happened before. What should I do? (I am using iMovie '09)

  • I can import my first clip to the video library, but not the second clip. I tried dragging-dropping and using the "E" key, but only the first clip will show up in the library. I use IMovie 9.0.9 and OSX 10.8.5. with no problems until yesterday.

I can drag my first clip from the New Event window into the Project Library, but not the second. I can highlight the second clip in the New Event window, but it won't "drag". The "E" key works for the first clip, but not the second.I've been using IMovie daily and the problem just appeared. No upgrades to the computer and no new software installed.  IMovie 9.0.9 and OSX 10.8.5

Thanks victoryhat.  I learned some new things from this very clear tutorial.  But it didn't answer my question about why the titles don't stay with the video when I export it.
He did mention something that might be a clue however.  When he talked about importing a title he created as an image, he noted that he was careful to make the image the same size as the video he was adding it to: 1280 x 720.  Since I took the video with an iPhone in the vertical position, my video image isn't the same size and orientation as the titles.
Maybe there is a way I should be setting the screen for this size???  I'll go back and play around.  Meanwhile thanks for alerting me to Gary Rosenzweig's MacMost tutorials.  Very clear.  I'll look for more.

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)

  • Is there a shortcut for fading audio to zero and back up between two clips?

I'm trying to determine if there is a shortcut for this situation in FCP 5...
You have two audio clips butted adjacent to each other.
You want the first clip to fade down to zero (i.e. silence).
You want the second clip to fade up from zero.
So basically you have a split second of silence between the two clips.
The video equivalent would be touching black for a second between the
two clips. You can use the "Fade In Fade Out Dissolve" to do it fast.
I realize you can accomplish this audio manuvers with 4 keyframes and the pen tool. I know you can also put an audio transisions on the end of each clip. There are a bunch of ways of getting there, but is there a really
fast way like the "Fade In Fade Out Video dissolve" or a keyboard shortcut?
    Thanks for any feedback.

When I need to do somethig like that I make sure there at least a 1 frame gap between the two and ad audio transitions on the end of clip 1 and the beginning of clip 2.
If someone has a faster way, i'd love to know it.

  • IMovie 11 slow and stuttering using Motion 5 clips

    Hi,
I'm using an 'old' 2008 Macbook Pro with 6GB Ram and a 2.5 Core 2 Duo.  Until now, everything has always worked with iMovie 11.
But now I'm trying something new:  I've retimed some .mov clips using Motion 5 --had no problem doing that-- and I 'shared' (rendered?) them using the default settings.  The files are larger than the original .mov files from the camera (original around 200MB,  retimed file around 700MB).  I put the files in the iMovie Events folder, started up iMovie and I can see and use the retimed clips just fine.
However, for the first time, iMovie is really struggling very hard, the clips are stuttering and sometimes I have to wait for 2 or 3 seconds before playback continues (in the preview window, while editing in iMovie).
I've closed all unnessary applications and services, and all looks great in Activity Monitor, but still, iMovie editing is virtually impossible.
My question is :  will I be able to render the final movie without the stuttering, even though it's stuttering in the preview window?
Can I do something to get it faster while editing in iMovie?  Or did I do something wrong with rendering in Motion 5?
Or do I just need new hardware?
    Many thanks,
    Kris

    hi,
if you are slow moing the footage then you could expect the resultant files to be bigger, since the clips are longer. However if they don't play well in iMovie, it could be that you have rendered them out with a codec that your computer cannot handle. Motion gives you a whole heap of codecs to render out to, and its even easier if you have Compressor. Have a look at one of the clips that you know does play nicely in iMovie. Open it in Quicktime player and then get the info window open about it. There it will tell you what kind of compression it has been rendered in, what the pixel dimensions are etc etc. You will want to try and copy those settings with your new clips out of Motion.

  • IMovie 09 truncates up to 1 second at beginning of each clip on import

When importing new video from my Canon HV20 (HDV), I'm noticing that the beginning of each new clip is missing up to one second of recording when compared to the source tape. If I were to import the same material using iMovie HD v6.0.3, the whole clip is imported. Any ideas?

Same issue using an HV20 here also. Any resolution?
I tried doing a manual import, but it still misses half a second or so of video from the source. I only tried to import the first clip, so I don't know if manual import helps with subsequent clips (when manual importing and letting the camcorder play to end).

  • ISight and iMovie

Does anyone know how to use iMovie with the neat fun-house mirror distortions available in iSight? When I use the iSight camera to make a video clip in iMovie I cannot access the cool image distortions available when I use the iSight camera by itself.

Yep, that's it. Didn't want to pay for an add-on, but I just may do it this time. Thank you so much for your quick answer and solution. This is my first time using Apple Discussions to solve a problem and am amazed that my first experience was so positive. Thanks again.

  • Why can't I edit a 7 second clip on iMovie?

I recorded a 7 second clip on my phone and uploaded it on iPhoto. I know it's a short clip, but I wanted to trim it, make it repeat, and maybe add some color and music to it. But when I add that 7 sec clip to iMovie. I can't do anything to it. I can't trim it, it won't let me add music. Basically, it won't let me edit it at all. Before Yosemite, I would edit short clips like nothing. But now, I can't do anything.

The new mobile version is a work in progress and was desinged to be more minimalist and is geared towards reading and posting so for now it's a case of wait and see

  • Every now and then I get about a half second clip of another song

Every now and then I get about a half second clip of another song at the end of a song. If you immediately go back and play the same again, you get the same little burp at the end. But if you play three or four songs and then go back, the little burp is not there. I did a restore on the ipod, and I am still getting the little burps. It only happens maybe once out of every 10 songs played.
Files are MP3's which play fine on the PC in WMP and itunes, and on Dell DJ15, Zune and Sansa MP3 players. Some of the MP3s were ripped from CD using MusicMatch, some recorded off old lps using Creative Go!, and some downloaded so I don't think it is an issue with the MP3s themselves. Since I use several different players, I don't want to maintain a separate AAC library just for the ipod.
Usually the burst is so short that you can't even tell who the artist was, but when I have recognized it was always something very close alphabetically - at the end of a Cream song I got a little Creed, at the end of a Bad Company song I got a little Bachman-Turner Overdrive, at the end of a Led Zeppelin track I got a little Linkin Park.

    Does this help?

Using Windows, the only answer would seem to be to re-encode them using iTunes.

  • I imported an hour of video into iMovie HD and cut it down to a 33 sec clip, and emptied the trash.  When I save the project, the file size is 20Gb.  How can I save just the 33 sec clip?

I imported an hour of video into iMovie HD and cut it down to a 33 sec clip, and emptied the trash.  When I save the project, the file size is 20Gb.  How can I save just the 33 sec clip?

Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

  • To save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

to save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

    Yes.
To preserve your projects, all moves should be done from within iMovie, (not the Finder).
First, the external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 will not work. You can reformat using Disk Utility if you need to.
When importing video from your camera, you can specify your external drive as the target on the import screen.
For existing projects, you should move using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
There is an error in the instructions where it says to drag the project icon to the icon in the Event Library. You should instead look for your hard drive icon in the Project Library.
You can move events using these instructions.

If you want to move Events, and copy photos, copy music, etc for editing on another Mac, you should use the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA feature after moving the Project as above.
