IMovie keeps a clip I deleted within Event Browser

I’ve experienced this situation now several times, reproducibly on my MBPro (10.9.4) using iMovie 10.0.4:
In Event Browser I select a clip in one of the Events.  Right-click, select Move to Trash.
The clip disappears from the Event Browser window.
Then I look in the Trash folder and the clip file is not in the Trash.
I look in the iMovie library,   iMovie Library.imovielibrary/ and see that the clip file is still there.
I can close and reopen iMovie and the situation is unchanged.
(How I can look in the iMovie Library is described here:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6474021)
Can someone tell me what I might be doing wrong?
In any case I would suggest that, on deleting a clip using the Event Browser, it would be worthwhile occasionally to check in the Trash folder and verify that the file has been moved to the Trash, so that when the Trash is emptied, the space occupied by that clip is released.    This would be a quick way to show that you don’t have the  problem I’m having.

Here is a solution to the problem:
In the Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder,
enter   /Users/Your user name//Movies/iMovie Library.imovielibrary/Name of Event/
(Name of Event is exactly as it appears in the Event Browser)
Select Go
This takes you to the folder in iMovie Library for that event, and you will see the contents of that folder as several folders and perhaps a file.  One of the folders is Original Media.  Open that folder and you will see individual files of the individual clips contained in that Event.   Delete the file of choice in the usual OS X way. iI will then appear in the Trash folder.  Empty the trash and it is gone.
This solution was suggested by Shirt Pocket Support, which provides technical help for the backup app SuperDUper.  I am indebted to them.

  • Latest version iMovie: cannot see clips in project OR event browser, but they are there in both libraries! So cannot create/edit/publish ANYTHING.

HI All. I have been having a HECK of a time with iMovie 11!!!  Converted a bunch of video to .mov format, imported into iMovie, and created a project. No problem. Finalized, and published to iTunes, no problem. Saves extra copies. No Problem. SO ... I want to create another project, and follow the instructions RELIGIOUSLY. I can import the video files into the event library, and can drag them into a newly created project, but I CANNOT see the clips in the browser pane for events or library! When I click the playhead in either the event library or the project library (where the clips are edited - supposedly), they play (ie, i hear the audio just fine) ... but NO real-time playback.  ALSO - the video no longer plays for the already completed project when I click the playhead - same deal - not in the project browser, not in the event browser. The playhead runs, but as it moves from thumbnail to thumbnail, each one goes black, and no video plays in real time in the other pane. I closed out of iMovie, did a restart, repaired permissions. No change. I get no error messages, and can find no way to 'reassociate' a project with a set of clips (like one can do in software like Illustrator etc).HELP!!!

I've spent 3 hours in Apple Covent Garden trying to have this fixed. Most of those were spent doing something to content in iPhoto. It didn't work. Then I left them my computer to reinstall software (Snow Leopard and iMovie) which they said they could do better than me and my discs. But I got back a computer with a new user profile and no files. When I used Time Machine to restore my files to my old profile the problem was just as before except now I've lost a week worth of photos, despite the Time Machine file having been saved just hours before I gave my Mac to the muppets in the Apple store.
If it's any clue, the other I get is that iMovie searches for four missing movie files when it tries to load. I've tried solving this by creating new files and changing the names to match the ones that are missing (as I read elsewhere in the community works) but it doesn't work.
So I've wasted hours, a day of Apple having my computer and no one replies to my thread here. What's to be done? Do I give up on iMovie and buy Final Cut pro? And how can I get my week's worth of photos back that have disappeared from TimeMachine, even though everything else in the restoration (e.g. mail and Firefox windows) are completely up to date?

  • IMovie 10.0.2: how to order events by date?

In the previous versions of iMovie it was possibile to have the events browser ordered by year and month.
Now apparently only in alphabetical order, which to me is not useful.
    Any tips?
    Thanks, Alessandro

Thanks Jim, but my problem is the order of events.
Your answer confirms me that it's not possible to have events ordered alphabetically at the moment.
    Let's hope for an update.

  • Help! iMovie deleted many clips during a "split event" procedure.

Please help. I realized that my 2004 "event" had far too many clips in it and decided to split the event. (Trying to remedy a poor organizational system). The split appeared to work fine, creating a new event 2004 1 that I assumed had my clips in it. They weren't there, or in the original event. Worse, other clips from that event were also missing. I have restarted the computer, still not there. And yes, I did check to be sure I was viewing ALL clips, not just favorites etc.
I do have a backup, but after much reorganizing it is just about impossible for me to figure out which clips disappeared. I had just this week given up on using iPhoto for my old 1000+ 30 second clips from my digital camera and had imported them directly into iMovie. I had also just imported all my old video footage from my nonHD camera. And of course, I hadn't re-backed up yet, but I had deleted them from iPhoto. (Was going to backup tonight to my new drive I bought for that purpose...)
    Any suggestions?

Thank you. I tried that and the actual folders match what shows in iMovie. I'm backing up now, but when I'm done I'll just reimport from my older backup and tapes and try to figure out what's missing.
What I'm really concerned about, is does iMovie just arbitrarily make things disappear often? How do I know there aren't other things from other events that are missing? Obviously right now I can do a file count, but once I actually start working with the clips and deleting the bad ones etc. how can I know if things are suddenly missing? (I have over a thousand clips so it isn't obvious.) These are baby clips which are precious to me...
In case it matters, just had my mac in for full diagnostic and it's fine. The hard drive is new and tests fine. Permissions on my C drive HAVE been being corrupted during file imports from my old Sony digital8, possibly that caused the original problem? I will be sure to check permissions before opening iMovie from now on.

  • Hi, I'm using imovie 11, I want to delete a clip video at the end of the project, but keep the audio, everytime  I delete the video, the audio is also deleted, please help!

Hi, Excuse my English, I'm using imovie 11, I want to delete a clip video at the end of the project, but keep the audio over the fade to black, everytime  I delete the video, the audio is also deleted, please help!

I assume you are trying to end the clip/project with a fade to black, or something that just doesn't cut so instant.
One thing i'm thinking you can try is to Add a "Transition Clip" to the end, and try your first method. (with Detached Audio + Delete Selection. (Yellow highlight was deleted selection) Do you need something to end like this?
If you can, put screenshot up (Shift+Comm+4), if i'm not on the right idea. It seems like an easy fix, with a few ways of doing it. You can also add a blank image to end project, sub titles or Add,Cutaway fade +Opacity adjust.

  • IMovie freezing on deletion or move of clips to a different event

    Hello,
I'm trying to clean up and reorganize my events in order for more efficiency in making my current project. The project is only 7 minutes long and I'm going to trim it down; I have 3 other completed 3-minute projects in my project library, as well (I don't know if this information matters but there you go).
All of a sudden yesterday iMovie started freezing (showing the rainbow pinwheel, the bane of my existence) whenever I tried to move clips from one event to another, or to delete rejected clips. The first few times it happened I tried waiting to see if it would eventually unfreeze and perform the task I wanted it to, but it always crashed. I thought maybe it was a space issue (I am often low on space) so I just freed up 25 gigs on my hard drive, but to no avail: iMovie is still freezing upon deletion or move of clips.
Anyone had this problem before and/or know what to do to fix it? I just don't understand why this is suddenly happening and I'm worried the problem is going to spread to other areas!

i did, yes. but it wasn't imovie content - it was some old files that i wasn't using anymore. i just backed them up onto my external then deleted them from the computer. and did empty the trash

Where was the file? Was it in one of the iMovie folders or in another folder on your hard drive? From Finder, can you open the file in QuickTime? If so, open the QuickTime Inspector (Window>Show Movie Inspector). What is shown against Format in the Inspector panel?
You mentioned earlier that you had deleted iMovie's Cache folder (at least I think that is what you meant). I'm not sure how many Events you have, but in Finder try selecting each Event in turn then delete both the iMovie Movie Cache folder and the iMovie Thumbnails folder. When opened, iMovie will regenerate these folders and all the thumbnails. Delete these folders from one Event at a time and try starting iMovie after each deletion. Hopefully, the problem can be narrowed down to one Event.
Leave all the video clips in the Events folders at this stage. I suspect that it's one of the thumbnails in a single Event causing the problem.

  • Split and delete unwanted event clips

Just got FCX - haven't worked with FCP since v5.5 a number of years ago.  Learning.
I have some footage (event clip) that is about an hour long and I want to delete about half of the clip (forever - it's old footage and nothing is on it).  I can't see how to split an event clip and delete the portion of the original file that I no longer want. I can reject the offending part of the clip but the source file remains.  If I try and move the rejected part of the file to the trash it moves the whole source file and I lose everything.
iMovie let me do this (it would split the event clip itself).
How do I do it on FCX ?  I will reclamin 15+ GB if I can manage this.
    Thanks

deleting parts of media is a standard practise.
    Its called consolidating,
say you have imported many files each taking up a lot of your fast editing drive from your camera archives/tapes. (You do have original backups of your media don't you.)
You have used only a few seconds of each clip ( each of which may run to many tens of minutes)
On a "real" editing system you can copy just the used media, not the WHOLE clip (plus definable handles), re-link your timeline to these then delete the unused media. (Not your original media!)
We need a real consolidate in FCPx  ( a decompose batch import would be nice too!)

  • Once I have published & burnt my DVD can I delete the events in imovie?

    Hi Guys & Gals,
I have just published and burnt my holiday movie through idvd and saved it to my external hard drive. Can I now go into Imovie and delete the events and projects that are in there as I wish to free up space?....
WIll the movie as a whole be saved on my external drive or does it still require the clips from imovie?... This is obviously presuming that I will no be making any further edits on this movie...
    Any help gratefully received....

ah... My "DVD" is three seperate projects so I guess I can't save the "DVD" as a whole but can save the three projects as seperate quicktime movies which means I can then delete the events and projects from Imovie?...

  • Does someone know when our movie project and finally our iDVD project is done, can we erase the clip that we had imported in iMovie without danger?  Or we have to keep the clip in iMovie until the DVD are burn?

Does someone know when our movie project and finally our iDVD project is done, can we erase the clip that we had imported in iMovie without danger?  Or we have to keep the clip in iMovie until the DVD are burn?

    Hi
Most processes in Non destructive Video editing is based on that the raw-material is safe and intact. So by trashing it most things can or will go wrong.
So e.g. in iMovie project - there is NO Movie - just a small text document refering to Your raw-material, audio files and photos (within or not in iPhoto Library) on how they are to act together to Play Your Movie.
And by changing any of them the Movie project will be affected or destroyed.
reg. iDVD there is also a link back to iMovie - Most famous to set of the iDVD BUG !
To do that - one starts a new iDVD project and add movies etc. Then find something i one movie in need to be adjusted. Closing iDVD and returning to iMovie and doing this. Then when back to iDVD it will notice and ask You to Up-date or Cancel. Neither works. The iDVD project is harmed. All Chapters now point to Chapter One and more strange things happens.
the medicine I use - I start a brand new iDVD Project and re-do it and hopefully not fine any more to be fixed in the movie.
This indicates the strong link inbetween iDVD and iMovie and I would not touch anything in iMovie till DVD is Burned and Ready AND Plays Well !

  • Linking Clips to Projects and Keeping them linked when re-arranging events.

I have uploaded all of my videos in I movie and created several projects in rough form as I plan to work with those projects over the upcoming weeks. The video's I uploaded as events were 25 years old and of my events spanned a few years. When I created my projects--I used pieces and parts of events (clips) from several different events. In short, my events don't align at all with my projects. Now I'm wanting to maybe rearrange my events to better align with my projects (i.e. I've put all birthday parties into one projects and I want to move birthday clips into one event.)
I'm concerned that if I move the clips and arrange new events--I movie will not know where to find the clips that align with my current projects. Will this be a problem.
A related but different question is as follows--I've backed up my events onto a portable hard drive. If I decide to delete these events altogether from my hard drive---and plug in my portable drive---will I movie find the clips making up my projects--even though they are not on the drive they were originally on when they were selected and placed into the project.

What I am asking is if anyone knows how to link these together in a less cumbersome fashion.
Yes and no. Basically, you were caught in an changeover enhancement. iMovie '08 only had the option of movie Events whereas iMovie '09 can move or copy either or both. In my case, the Projects were still on my number one internal drive but my Events had been previously moved to my number two internal drive. I simply opted to "move" both the a single external drive which worked successfully without have to first "restore" the Events to the number one drive first which seems to imply there was sufficient pointers available to restore/update locations by simply "moving" your Projects to join your Events on the external drive. But I tend to agree that having a "re-link" option would be a nice enhancement request for iMovie '09.

  • How can I keep my audio track, delete a short segment of video, and reinsert a new video clip, without changing the audio with the way it lines up with the original video?

How can I keep my audio track, delete a short segment of video, and reinsert a new video clip, without changing the audio with the way it lines up with the original video?

If you have either iMovie 09 or iMovie 11 you can do this easily using the Cutaway feature.
Go to iMovie/Preferences and make sure that the Advanced Tools are enabled.
Now you jut drag and drop the 2nd clip onto hte first clip at the frame where you want the Cutaway to start. A popup menu will appear. Choose Cutaway.
    Here is a good Tutorial.
If you have iMovie 08, let me know. There is a way to do it, but it is more complex.

  • Deleting an event on iMovie

I am trying to delete an event off my iMovie and for some weird reason, it won't let me.  I have tried to go to 'File' and 'Move to Trash' but it comes up with a message saying 'The Library must contain at least one event'  I looked it up and someone said to add another event.  But i don't know how to.  Is there any way to get that event off my iMovie?

    Hi gca008,
iMovie, as it mentions in that error message, must have at least one event in its library, so before you delete that event you must create a new one. See this article for the steps to create an event -
    iMovie Help: Organize the library
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov1d890f00b
    In particular -
    Create and rename events
You can create new events in a library at any time (in addition to the events created automatically when you import footage). To create a new movie or trailer, see Create a new movie or Create a trailer.
If you don’t see the Libraries list, click the Show button  on the left side of the toolbar.
If you have more than one iMovie library, select the library where you want to create an event.
    Choose File > New Event.
The new event appears in the Libraries list, with its name highlighted.
Then to delete an event -
Delete movies, trailers, clips, and events
You can delete unwanted movies, trailers, and clips from an event, and you can delete an entire event in order to free up space on your hard disk.
If you don’t see the Libraries list, click the Show button  on the left side of the toolbar.
In the Libraries list, select the event you want to delete, or select the event that contains the items you want to delete.
In the browser, select the movies, trailers, or clips you want to delete.
Tip:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
Choose File > Move to Trash.
If a clip you’re deleting is in use anywhere else in your library, the clip is not deleted.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L

an event in one of my libraries no longer has the event icon next to it's name in the browser just the name only. I can't view the clips in the event or import new clips. I've tried deleting the event and nothing. After control clicking the event it shows all the media that has been previously imported. But it does not allow anything to be done to the event including deleting. This showed up at the beginning of a normal import session. This is fortunately the back-up evant.

Did you perhaps mess with the contents of the library in the Finder?
