IMovie keeps resizing my video clips

I've been working on this video project for my French class and when i was finishing up I noticed that many of my earlier clips in my project had been shrunken to smaller increments than I had originally made. This has pretty much ruined the whole project because the length of all my clips has changed. Does anyone know why this happened or how I can fix it? My project is due wednesday but its finals week so i dont have a lot of time to work on it so I'd like to avoid starting over. And if i do have to start all over i dont want to make the same mistake again.

As we are not mind readers, could you please tell us:
What Mac you have
What version of OS X
What version of iMovie
What camera
What format are the videos

Where was the file? Was it in one of the iMovie folders or in another folder on your hard drive? From Finder, can you open the file in QuickTime? If so, open the QuickTime Inspector (Window>Show Movie Inspector). What is shown against Format in the Inspector panel?
You mentioned earlier that you had deleted iMovie's Cache folder (at least I think that is what you meant). I'm not sure how many Events you have, but in Finder try selecting each Event in turn then delete both the iMovie Movie Cache folder and the iMovie Thumbnails folder. When opened, iMovie will regenerate these folders and all the thumbnails. Delete these folders from one Event at a time and try starting iMovie after each deletion. Hopefully, the problem can be narrowed down to one Event.
Leave all the video clips in the Events folders at this stage. I suspect that it's one of the thumbnails in a single Event causing the problem.

  • I'm having problems with iMovie - some of the video clips are black and can't watch them

I was trying to view the video clips again in the iMovie folder but they are black now and can't watch them.  How to restore them?

  • DVD SP4 resizes a video clip

    Hi all,
I've created a video clip at custom size of 720x320 to use in DVD menu. I've
    applied it to
drop zone. To my surprise it didn't fit into the menu design. The clip's info in
    DVD SP has
shown a size of 720x536 (it's a PAL project), so DVD SP has resized the clip to
    the PAL native
size automatically! Does anybody know if there is a way to prevent DVD SP of
    doing that?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Audrey - welcome to the discussions.
Try re-sizing that drop zone - DVDSP should maintain the correct aspect ratio for the clip unless you go wildly out of the normal range, in which case it will clip the edges.
The other obvious win would be to composite the entire menu background using FCP or Motion or After Effects and get the footage exactly as you want it before bringing it in to DVDSP.
But no - I don't think you can prevent DVDSP behaving in the way it did for you.

  • IMovie refuses to play video clip backwards

Well I have this one video clip that I want to play backwards, but every time I use the effect, it renders, will play backwards while it is rendering, but once it is done it jumps back forwards. I have deleted the com.apple.imovie doodad, and have run disk utility, but to no avail. This is the only effect that doesn't work.
    thanks in Advance,
    T.J.

    Hi
iMovies up to version HD 6 - is for streamingDV from miniDV tape Cameras and via FireWire.
Due to the alient video type used all kind of strange errors will occure.
    • Convert Your
video to - streamingDV .DV (QuickTime .mov)
audio to - .aiff 16-bit 48kHz (no .mp3 or .wma etc)
photos to - .jpg (no .bmp etc)
and iMovie will run much more as intended.
or - use iMovie'09 (iM'08 far from as good as iM'09)

  • I created an Imovie on Ipad. Before exporting the Imovie, I deleted the video clips from camera roll. Error message "this proj. contains clips which have been deleted from your photo library." Help!  Can I recover the "preview" file of my video in Imovie?

Is there an app out there to find the files within Imovie app on my Ipad where the Imovie "preview" is playing from?
I deleted the original vidoe clips from my Camera Roll before exporting the Imovie to Youtube because my camera roll was out of memory.
I'm using the latest Imovie app for Ipad.

  • Importing video clips in AVCHD (Lite) into Aperture vs iMovie

I'm trying to figure out which application I should use for importing and storing video clips shot on my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 camera. This camera can shoot in AVCHD (Lite) or in Motion JPEG. I use the AVCHD (Lite) format to shoot the videos with this camera.
The two application options I currently have for importing video clips from this camera are:
    a. Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm not using iPhoto since I have Aperture).
    b. iMovie 10.0.1 (I'm not using Final Cut Pro)
When I first got this camera, Aperture 3 did not support the AVCHD Lite codec. Back then, iMovie could import video clips shot in AVCHD Lite, but it had to transcode the AVCHD video clips into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). Some time later, one of the Aperture 3 updates made it possible to import AVCHD Lite into Aperture (without having to transode into an intermediate codec), so we started importing our video clips shot in AVCHD Lite (together with our photos shot by the same camera) directly into Aperture.
iMovie 10 released in 2013 supports importing video clips shot in AVCHD Lite without having to transode them to AIC for storing these video clips in iMovie. So, now we have a dilemma that we need help with. Which application should we use going forward for importing video clips from this camera?
When I look at the metadata for the imported videos in Aperture, I see that the format of the imported video clips is listed as H.264. However, I can't seem to be able to find any information about the format in which iMovie stores imported videos. I can "Reveal in Finder" a video that I import into iMovie, and I see the size of the file and the .mov extension assigned to the file. With video files, the extension does not always determine the codec of the file, but in my non-expert opinion, the .mov extension is not H.264; I may be totally wrong here, though. What I have noticed, though, is that a video clip imported into iMovie has the file size that is about 10% larger than the same video clip imported into Aperture.
    Therefore, I have three questions:
    1. What format is a video clip (shot in AVCHD Lite) stored in Aperture 3.5.1 and in iMovie 10.0.1
    2. Which format (the one used by Aperture or the one used in iMovie) is better suited for transoding AVCHD videos into? The balance of the quality and file size is the main consideration for us.
    3. Which applications would you personally prefer using for importing video clips to and why?
I do want to use some of these video clips to make home videos in the future, utillizing iMovie. However, it seems I can still store the raw footage in Aperture and access this raw footage from iMovie to be able to create an iMovie project and a final home video. One of the concerns is that if we keep importing our video clips into Aperture, the Aperture library could grow beyond the size that Aperture can support and we may end up losing our photos due to the database corruption. Is this a real risk?
    Thank you!

I had the same question recently. Go to the right of this box and a little above, into the Search Discussions window. Type in this: Is MPEG2 the answer
You will find my question, and the great answers I got. Follow those directions and you will be all set!

  • Is there a way to copy referenced video clips into the iMovie library?

When I import video clips into an iMovie event it seems that iMovie uses only a reference to the file. When files are moved things get horrible broken soon. I noticed that iMovie does actually copy video clips into your library when you convert your library from iMovie'11 to iMovie'13. Is there a way to copy video clips into the iMovie library when importing them so that they don't get lost?

  • Merge Still Photos with Video Clips?

I have an iMovie project containing only video clips in the timeline, arranged by capture date/time. I also have an iPhoto file containing still photos of similar material. How can I import all of the iPhoto stills into the iMovie project such that the photos are inserted within the timeline and combined with the video clips so that everything (photos and videos) is arranged by date/time? Is that possible? If not, can someone suggest a script that will do just that?

iM is no 'scriptable' app, video editing is usually no process for any automatic tasks...
    I would...
    * give the photos some names which indicates where in timeline of the iM project they belong (numbers 1,2,...? a date...?)
    * place photos manually into time of project...
    ... yes, video-editing is sometimes a painstaking, time-consuming tasks ... ;))

  • How do you turn video clips?

I am using iMovie to edit my video clips but I have a clip that is turned sideways. How do I rotate it without using QuickTime Pro (which I don't have)? Is there another option for me? Your help is greatly appreciated.

    your options are:

which is a "standalone app" ...

    "rotate"
which is a free plug-in for iM which ... ehm, rotates the clip ..

  • Just want iMovie to "Forget" iPhoto videos

Is there a way to make iMovie "Not list" all video clips from iPhoto inside iMovie 11? I have thousands of videos that load upon startup and they are all mistagged with the wrong date several cameras ago (Typically Jan 1903). I really just want iMovie to use events I import or drag inside. Can this be done or is there an easier way than date change hundreds of videos which seem to be tagged correctly in iPhoto?
    //Cheers

I'd like to know this too as it's really quite annoying.
You'll probably find it's one of those 'usefull features' they have introduced in '11.
I can't understand why they do this sort of thing & not give you an option to switch it off.
It's like Faces in iPhoto, chews up memory & time everytime you import photos even if you don't use it.

  • Using Safe Margins in PE11 Video Clips

Is it possible to manually resize a video clip in Premiere Elements 11 so that it fits inside the safe margin frame?  If so how do I do this?
Also, is it possible to get rid of video clips' black side bars in PE!!?  If so how how do I do this?
    Thank you,

    andrew-dd_1937
What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running?
    1. With the Safety Margins on in the Edit area monitor and the video clip selected, scale the image in the monitor to fit the area of interest.
Scaling can be done by clicking on the monitor to bring up the image's bounding box and then dragging on one of the handles of the bounding
    box for the scaling.
Tip: Depending on the specification of your TV, you can alter the Safety Margins in Edit Menu/Project Settings/General targeting
    Title Safe Area
    Action Safe Area
Also, in Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Motion Panel expanded, you can uncheck the option Constrain Proportion so that
you can scale width and height separately.
Scaling can also be done by selecting the Timeline clip and then using the Scale Slider found Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Motion
Panel expanded and its Scale property.
Where are you seeing these black border in Premiere Elements....?
When you first drag your import to the Expert workspace Timeline or some place else. If at export, then you (manually) or the project
(automatically) have not set the correct project preset to match the properties of the source media. So, more information on what is
    happening here.
Please let me know if I have interpreted your questions correctly. If not, please more details.
    Thanks.

  • I DRAG AND DROP A VIDEO CLIP FROM THE EVENT BROWSER THAT IS 7.9 SECONDS INTO MY IMOVIE I'VE STARTED AND IT CHANGES IN THE PROJECT TO 4.9 SECONDS - HOW CAN I KEEP THE LENGTH THE SAME

I drag a video clip from Event to Project into my imovie I've started.  The video clip length changes from 7.9 seconds to 4.9 seconds. How can I stop that length from being changed?

If you are using transitions either side of the clip they will use some of the clip to generate the effect, there isn't anything you can do unless you remove or shorten the transition.
If you aren't using transitions it may be that you are only selecting part of the clip in the event window, try dragging out the yellow frame to include all the video you want in the project.

  • How do you allow an audio clip to keep playing after a video clip fades out at the end of an iMovie? I want the audio clip to fade out later... this used to be easy in an older version of iMovie.

I just updated to iMovie 11. I want the final music to play beyond the last video clip and fade out. How do I do this? Do I need to import a black screen?

Yes, I've done this, but I can't figure out how to get the audio to fade. I think I need to explain further. This is really a simple movie made from multiple photo stills from my son's school. There are cross fade transition betwee the stills, and some titiles that cross fade too. So there is not actual video. Thus everything shows only in the project library, where I dragged in the photo stills to import them. There is nothing in the event (or is in the clip) window in the bottom. I can't figure out how to get the volume lines to show for the audio clip in the project library as they did in the old version of iMovie so I could drag them up or down.

  • Can I edit out the middle of a video clip in iMovie?

I know how to crop the beginning or end of a video, but I would like to crop out a section in the middle. I don't want to lose the part following the cropped frames. What must I do? Thanks for any advice you can offer. Miriam

Can I edit out the middle of a video clip in iMovie?
    Yes.
    What must I do?
    Basically you have three options:
    1) If the clip is in the "Event" window, simply select (i.e., set and adjust if necessary "in" and 'out" points) the segment you want and transfer it to your "Project" window and place it where you want it.
    2) If the clip is already in the "Project" window, simply select (i.e., set and adjust if necessary "in" and 'out" points) the segment you want to keep...
    a) and press the "Split" option in the edit menu (or the "Split Clip" option in the context menu) to divide the clip into three segments. Then select each of the segments you don't want and press the "Delete" key to remove them from the "Project" window.
    b) or, even easier, simply press the "Trim to Selection" option in the "Edit" menu.
All of these work flows do not physically remove anything from the "Event" but merely perform a non-destructive edit of the project for the purpose of later output.
