IMovie lags when editing video

Hey guys
So I just updated iMovie to iMovie '11 and no I have problems with editing videos. I had many clips and I imported them into the program and the whole thing was about 45 minutes long. I started editing and everything was absolutely fine, no problems at all, although it was that long. Now the movie is only 8(!!!) minutes long and now iMovie started lagging. I can still watch the video alright, but when I try to edit, I have to wait 3 secs till the curser moves and it also sometimes turns into the buisy sign ...
I dunno what to do, I need to get the video done by today so pleeeeeease help me!
Thanks!
Yana

  • IMovie lags when editing video and audio

I just bought iMovie yesterday from the Mac App Store. I recorded a DJ set and wanted to edit my Video with better quality audio that i recorded seperately. I find that when editing my video and audio (Matching up audio), there is alot of lag. Especially when scrolling through the video to drag the audio to a certain point to get the audio in sync. This is very frustrating and i feel i just got cheated paying for iMovie 11 when it cant even do a simple job. Please help me resolve this. Thank you!

    Hi
This is not easy in iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 -
What and how did You record the extra audio ? With what tool ?
To be able to keep audio in sync should be recorded with a device with TimeCode. Else it will be near to impossibly. Or extremely tedious even if FinalCut is used.
I would use FinalCut and keep original audio on track 1 and 2 - and the extra on track 3 and 4. Then Show Wave-form - then see if they can match up to each others.
But doing this in iMovie - is nearly impossibly.
IF AUDIO HAS - TimeCode - and there are no drop outs on video or audio then You should be able to exchange original audio with the extra recorded one in iMovie and even move it frame by frame (1/30 sec or 1/25 sec) - in FinalCut audio can be moved much more exact eg 1/100 sec or within a frame
(my miniDisc recorder - is FAR away from exact enough for this)

  • How can I get the QUICK  DEVELOP  panel to appear when editing video in Lightroom 4

When editing video, the only panel that appears at right hand side is the the one silimar to the developing of still shots. But of course, it is greyed out, thus preventing its use when editing video.

Thanks a lot Jay. Right clicking on a panel brought up QUICK  DEVELOP. I've searched through books galore and none mention this.

  • Using iMovie 09, when downloading video fromm Samsung HMX- H106SN, The video image is stretched. Anyone have an idea for a fix?

Using iMovie 09, when downloading video from Samsung HMX- H106SN, the video image in iMovie is stretched. I see no obvious way to adjust this in iMovie.  When played on HDTV directly from camera using HDMI, the video image is fine.  Is this a compatibility issue? Anyone have an idea for a fix?
    Thnx, olive.c

Thanks guys! Appreciate the help. Unfortunately I'm just not getting the same quality/file size/performance that I'm getting from the traditional Apple TV export option.
I did however find what I think might even be a better solution for anyone using a mono wireless mic system like myself... use what's called a 3.5mm stereo jack to 3.5mm mono plug adapter. They're only like $5 and not only convert the audio so it comes out of both speakers, but this is probably a better option cause now in post production (iMovie) the other tracks like music etc... are still in stereo.
Here's a link to the adapter on Tiger Direct... http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=93027 7&sku=C184-03174&srkey=3.5mm%20mono%20plug%20to%203.5mm%20stereo%20socket
    Hope this helps!

  • Extreme Lag While Editing Videos

Hello everyone, my first topic. On iMovie I get lots of lag while trying to edit videos of any length-EVERYTHING lags. In activity monitor the CPU usage sometimes even goes over 100%. Now the lag is not just when I try to put different videos together, but even when I only have the default slides things (the things you can select under the "T" button). I get lag with other apps as well, but iMovie is by far the worst.
If it helps, I'm using iMovie 09' version 8.0.6.

hard to tell form remote ...
slow-responding apps could have two main reasons:
    • not enough room for 'breathing' on internal hard-drive; any MacOS-app 'swaps' hidden files while processing onto the internal drive (if partitioned: the MacOS partition). keep at last 15-25GBs free!
    • 'wrong' installation, usually done by cloning an old/'alien' set-up from some backup onto a newer/different Mac.

  • IPhone 4 - iMovies - won't edit videos from other albums

So I have the iPhone 4 and I have iMovie it. Well I've made some videos on it and it worked perfectly.... Until today. Today I was going to make a tribute video for my uncle who had died. I was going to incorporate pictures and videos I had of him. Well the videos were on my computer so I synced my phone and 2 videos on my phone. When I went to iMovies to start my editing and the videos never showed up. They are in the right format (mp4) so I don't know why it didn't work. So I tried trimming some parts and sending them to my camera roll and even that didn't work. Can anybody tell me what I can do to get this to work? Or can iMovies only work on videos you recorded with your phone?

Just a quick update on my issue... which seems different than most.  To summarize, I tried updating from iTunes 10.6 directedly via USB.  Got an empty progress bar when it "rebooted" after "successfully updating" to 5.1 with a memory allocation bar on itunes showing most the memory as allocated to "other", instead of the usual memory allocation to apps, music, pcits, etc.  Rebooted the phone, but still came up with an empty progress bar, but would connect to itunes.. showing booted as 5.1, but again the memory was still allocated to "other".  Started recovery process on itunes to try to bring back my old config, after which the iphone fully booted (into 5.1), but was completely.... recovered and re-installed all my apps, music, etc without a hitch and rebooted successfully, this time the memory allocation was correctly labeled, but somewhere I gained 2.0 GB of memory, even with all the same apps and music installed.  I had to do some minor additional configurations (password lock had to be re-enabled), but otherwise, everything was working.  A bunch of apps lost their stored settings... which I though strange as I expected the "backups" to store those settings as well.   Otherwise, running 5.1 now without issues... seems much snappier than 5.0.1... but the process was nerve racking to say the least.
Best of luck with other "explorers" tyring to make the whole process work.

  • Lag when recording video on photobooth !!

I got same kind of probleme but easier to solve (I think).
    Conditions :
-Applications open : Finder / Photobooth
    -Processor prefs : Maximum
    -No background deamons running
Probleme : When I record a video in PhotoBooth on a backdrop, i look the video once recorded and it really lags, i don't see all pics. What can I do ?
It's a bran new MacBook 2,2 Ghz that I had for Christmas.

    Hello ched78
If you believe there is something wrong with your new MacBook, contact the retailer who sold it to you for a professional check.
Otherwise, unless you get better suggestions here, consider the following suggestions:
    (0) Search Photo Booth > Help > Photo Booth Help on your Mac for "Using video backdrops" (without the quotation marks.) Instructions on how to properly use the video backdrop with your new MacBook are shown there.
After you have made your video as instructed there, check the quality again to see if it is better.
    (1) If your video does not look better than your earlier Photo Booth movies, quit Photo Booth.
Then open your Home / Pictures / Photo Booth folder.
Open your movie file using QuickTime Player, and play the movie to to check its quality in QT.
    (2) If the video quality is unacceptable to you when played with either QuickTime or Photo Booth, try all the suggestions that you have not yet tried that were offered to "RNobleman" in his thread at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1289170.
If, after trying everything that has been suggested in that thread, you still find an unacceptable and equivalent lag in both Photo Booth and WebcamTweaker videos played back in QT Player, it seems that, like RNobleman, your quality demands are higher than Photo Booth's backdrops can deliver.
    (3) If you cannot accept lower quality video that with the Photo Booth "backdrop" you want, the only workaround I can suggest is to use different software. Once you find iMovie or some other video software that gives video quality you find acceptable, you can decide whether you need to pursue more professional painted or projected backdrops with that software.

  • Crashes, graphics glitches, and more crashes when editing video clips

Can't for the life of me figure out why PE keeps crashing on me, so I'm here for help.
My system consists of a i7-970 hexacore, 6GB ram, 1x 500GB os drive, 3x500gb raid 0 drives (this is where my video clips are stored), 2x GeForce GTX460 video cards.
OS is Windows 7 Profressional 64 bit.
The video files I work with are generally in the 50-200GB size.
A little background - the videos that I am working with are recordings from Battlefield Bad Company 2 that I have recorded with some capture software called Dxtory.
I record at 1920x1080 at 60 FPS to avi files.  The avi files are using the "xtor" codec (Dxtory's own codec)
    [ISFT]    DxtoryCore ver2.0.0.101
[ISRC]    Video:YUV420 Audio:Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Audio is PCM 192000Hz recorded in stereo.
Let me start by saying I have not had trouble with this before until I started recording the videos at 60 FPS.  30 FPS worked ok (some crashes here and there, but they were bearable), but the frequent crashes started happening when I started working with the 60 FPS videos, done mainly so I could play around with slowing the clips down, etc.
Sometimes I can open and edit clips just fine.
Recently, a project that I'm working on is crashing when I try putting two different clips from different files together on the time line.  I managed to get it to work once, and saved the project after that.  Then, PE crashed randomly and when trying to reopen the project, it just crashes and won't let me get any further.
I should mention the graphics glitches as well - occasionally (especially when previewing video clips before adding them to the timeline) after I close the preview window, the graphics in PE will glitch out, causing random lines to appear in certain areas, graphics to stack on top of eachother and freeze up, and sometimes I can click on the "play" button in the main project window and hear everything start playing, but the graphics are completely screwed up to the point where I can't view the video or hit the pause button.
All of my computer hardware is fine, all drivers, and PE, are up to date.
Can someone please help me figure out what is going on?  I'll be happy to provide any more information that might help out.

The most likely issue is the codec that your program is using the create your video. It's apparently not compatible with Premiere Elements.
This often happens also when people try to record their on-screen video with FRAPS.
You'll see lots of discussions on this issue in the Premiere Pro forum. However, it's even more pronounced in Premiere Elements, which is designed to work almost exclusively with camcorder video.
Some video programs are a little more versatile with this type of video. Some people have found Corell's Video Studio better at handling these non-traditonal formats.
But I did a Google search on Dxtory editing and couldn't find any information on it.
Sorry I can't offer a solution. But I can pretty much assure you that Premiere Elements isn't it. sorry.

  • IMovie crashes when importing video

    iMovie crashes when importing video

I agree with Keydogg. Here it is step-by-step.
Try a "File Import" instead of "Camera Import":
    _ Quit iMovie '09
_ Create a folder in your desktop & name it "Flip_videos"
_ Mount your Flip camera to the Mac
_ Copy your video files from the camera to the "Flip_videos" folder in your desktop
_ *Eject / Disconnect* your Flip camera from the Mac
    _ Launch iMovie '09
_ *Go to* "File > Import > Movies..."
_ Browse to the "Flip_videos" folder, Select "Create New Event"
    _ Click Import
Let me know if that helps!

  • Captivate Crashing when editing video demo

I have been having a lot of issues with Captivate crashing when I'm editing video demos. When I try to save, the save progress bar will get to 'thumbnails' and then freeze up. I have to close and restart the project and lose all information that has not been saved. I try to save after every thing just to be sure, but this is still very frustrating.
Does anyone else have issues with this?
The videos I'm working with are about 6 minutes long. I've trimmed a lot of information out in an attempt to make it a shorter video. It seems that after so many 'trims', Captivate doesn't function very well. I'm assuming a work around would be to just make shorter videos, however, if anyone else has an issue such as this I was wondering what your work around was.
    Thanks

You left out one important number: how much free space left on your hard drive?

  • Imovie crashes when capturing video

I have a MAC powerbook pro with IMovie 8. The program works fine except when capturing video. It will capture about 20-40 seconds of video then the "application quits unexpedtedly". I have tried two different cameras and the same thing happens with both.
I also have Final Cut loaded on the computer and Final Cut will capture fine from both cameras.
Any ideas why IMovie is crashing?
    Thanks,
    eden

I am having exactly the same problem. The most infuriating thing is that i have only had this mac for 2 months and when i first brought it it worked fine, with exactly the same camera and settings! I downloaded all the updates and managed to import 20 minutes of footage (which got my hopes up) but then it started to crash again
    does anybody have a solution?

  • Experiencing lag when editing, backup in background

I've noticed FCPX lagging when I make cuts or move any clips around on the timeline. For instance I'll make a blade cut and be waiting 2-5 seconds for it to show up. I might drag the clip somewhere else on the timeline and find that I have to wait for the UI to catch up on drag. Since this is EXACTLY what I should be able to do quickly with this kind of software it's very frustrating.
I notice this on all my projects and even on new timelines I create.
I noticed the 'Backup' progress bar keeps appearing in the Background Tasks window. I've not seen it start and stop like this before. It looks like a glitch of some kind.
Any thoughts on how to solve this lag? Is it the backup task? Can I disable this feature?
I'm working on FCP 10.1.4 in OSX 10.10.1 on a Mac Pro (late 2013). <----THIS SETUP SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM TO WORK ON AS IT"S AN 'EPIC' 'PRO' MODEL.
Storage is on a Pegasus2 R4 thunderbolt raid HD bought through the apple store.

wwhere are the backup files? Try repairing permissions and trashing preferences. If it continues to constantly backup switch off back ups and see how it works then. Also try creating a new user and seeing how the application behaves there.

  • IMovie using 200-300% CPU when editing video. Why?

    Hello everyone,
As the title says, I am experiencing iMovie using 200-300% of my Macbook Air's CPU. This occurs when I am editing the video, taking parts out and making sure everything look and sounds good.
Does anyone know of a way to stop iMovie from using this much CPU?
    Any help will be appreciated,

  • Imovie Crashes when Editing? Something to do with my Camera?

    hi!
I just recently got a macbook for my birthday. Its brand new and it has imovie 11. I been having trouble whenever i edit my movies that where imported from my camera. When i film on my webcam built in and edit, it dosent crash. But when i use the video from my camera it does. I dont understand. I been on the phone with apple care plently of time and they cannot solve this problem. they said it had somthing to do with the software on my camera? I talked to sony and they said there was no update for my camera which is a Sony Cybershot DSC-W530. I just want to be able to import my video from my camera and edit them without having my brand new computer crash:(
    Help!!!!!!!!!!

    [Have you seen this article?|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2558]
    It suggests importing at 960x540.
If you prefer to edit at full 1920x1080 (and why wouldn't you?), get the free app called MPEG Streamclip and convert the h.264 files from the Canon to Apple Intermediate Codec in 1920x1080 (e.g. current dimensions). This will produce a larger file because the Apple Intermediate Codec uncompresses the h.264 so that every frame is a full frame. However, you can edit in 1920x1080 with no crashes.

  • IMovie Crashes When Editing Projects

iMovie 08 crashes while I am editing a project. It happens all the time now which is weird because I have made movies successfully in the past. I have 250g HD and 116g free space. The event I am editing is 62g. I am so confused and frustrated. I can't make any edits without hanging up and having to force quit out of the application. Any ideas?

"..Would I be able to import the project part that I export and delete.." ..You would, except that it'd be all "baked" into a single clip when exporting it, so although you could chop it up again once you'd re-imported it, your original edits wouldn't be there to re-edit.
(..In the previous iMovie HD 6 there's an option 'Burn Project to Disc...' which does allow a project to be exported in an editable format, but if yours is 62GB and a DVD holds 4.7GB or data, that's be several DVDs' worth ..oh, and I think it couldn't split a project across several DVDs..)
So if you'd want to re-edit parts later, your best bet may be to copy the entire project to an external FireWire hard disc (..preformatted to 'Mac OS Extended', using Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility..) and then delete half, or more, of the project that's on your internal disc, thus making the whole thing more stable.
(..To read more about formatting an external disc, click on iMovie Help and type external hard disc into the Search box; that'll give you a topic called 'iMovie: Format external hard disks as HFS Extended for best performance'..)
Continue editing what's left on your internal disc, or tell iMovie where you've moved your project to - onto the external disc - by clicking on iMovie's hard disc icon at the upper-right corner of the Events Library..
..at least, that's where iMovie's Help says you'll find that icon, but - honestly - I've never seen it there, even when I've had one or more correctly-formatted external hard discs connected!
(..To read about that in iMovie's Help, Search on move project and that'll give you the Help file 'Storing your video library on an external hard disk'..)
So; if subsequent editing's not important, just Export most of your existing project, then delete it from your internal disc. You'll be able to bring it back later in one chunk to complete the start of your movie.
If later editing is important, copy - or, better still, BACKUP - your project to an external disc, then tell iMovie where you've put it, and either continue editing on that disc, or delete half the project from the internal disc and continue editing on the internal one.
A Backup is extremely important anyway for a project your size: what would you do if your computer, or project, went wrong now, and you had no copy of your 62GB project?! ..Probably pull all your hair out, shout and scream!
Erm; how to combine the rest of your project - what you'll edit from now on - with what you've saved on the external disc? When you're happy with the remainder of your edit, Export it as a single file, and then add it to what you've saved on the external disc.
But for a project your size ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP!
P.S: As this is a big important project, test this first by doing a short Export of a short test project. Then check that you can recombine the two halves. Ensure that everything works well before you perform this kind of major surgery on your big project!
