IMovie locks up, freezes

Ever since I loaded the new iMove software about a year and a half ago, my iMovie software has been failing. I never had a problem with the original iMovie format, and my brother-in-law has no problems with his NEW iMovie software.
I can load pictures into it, and music. But after that, the entire program locks up. It "scrolls" through pictures, but the visual never changes from the very first picture in the series. The shape of the photo changes to match the next photo in the series, which is somewhat odd. The fan in the computer starts running very high and it stays there. It doesn't slow down, the computer doesn't do anything. It gives me the rainbow wheel, and won't let me click out of it to another program, it won't let me force quit. At that point, I can only force the shut down by holding the start button down. So my iMovie is useless.
If I load the new iLife software, do you think that will solve my problem?
I had the internal power supply replaced last year because the computer was going through a constant cycle of start, re-start, re-start, re-start, etc. The iMovie problems started around the same time. I also had 2 firewire ports that were dead and I could not successfully burn a video disc of any kind. When the power supply was replaced, the firewire ports came back to life. I was then able to burn discs with music and data, but I can't test anything involving video because iMovie just locks up as soon as I try.
I have about 14 GB of free space. iTunes works fine, internet runs smoothly. I can open documents, and garage band appears to function normally. So pieces of iLife are fine, but not iMovie, and presumably, iDVD. (I wouldn't know at this point.)
Thoughts?

I had a similar problem. I purchased "the new iMac" in Sept.'07 with iMovie '08. I used the computer for 7 months for photography in iPhoto without connecting to the internet so I was not keeping up with software updates.
After working with iMovie for 1 project it started to run slow and sometimes freeze and I would have to shut off power and re-start. I was getting a similar freeze in iPhoto during editing a photo, especially when I was zoomed in on the photo using the slider in the lower right corner of the screen. Sometimes I would get an error message telling me to re-start the computer. It was very frustrating having these problems with a new computer that had never ben asked to do anything but iPhoto and iMovie.
Last May I took the computer back to where I bought it. They looked at the logs and saw that the graphics bd was related to the panic errors. All they did was run all of the software updates that had come out between September and May, which included iMovie update 7.1, iMac software update 1.2.1, iLife support 8.2, iMovie update 7.1.1 and iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3 among other updates not specific to iMovie or the OS. When I got the computer back everything worked beautifully. The tech noted that everything worked fine after the software updates and the EFI firmware update and there was no hardware problem. The machine is now connected to the internet and I am religious about keeping the updates current.
I am no expert, not even close (this is my first post) but I just wanted to say what worked for me. If you want to see what updates you have installed, in the Finder, click on the apple icon, then click on software update > preferences>installed updates. Here you can view what updates have been installed. Assuming you are connected to the internet I would run all the available software updates and see if that helps before you take it for service.
Maybe another reader of the forum can tell you if the other problems you were having with power supply could be related, or if your computer purchased this long ago is being asked to do too much?
Good luck.

Originally, I thought it was due to 800+ files in the trash, however, I removed all but 5 photo files from the trash and it continues to lock up.  Inititally the "progress" bar would get to about 1/2 way and then it would stop and stall.  However, now the progress bar no longer shows a progress line it immediately freezes and locks up. Can anyone help?

You may have damaged the library - Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

I tried to open a new project and everything works

This recently happened to me.  I am a novice, but it seemed like that project got corrupted some how.
    I deleted it.
Went to time machine and picked it up again when I knew it was working ok.
I lost a few hours of work, but not the entire project.
Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

  • Imovie locks up/crashes every time I drop a film clip into the project

Almost every time that I drop in a film clip to my current project, iMovie locks up and crashes producing a long readout for Apple.  I've made plenty of projects, but this one is due by Friday. I have to keep waiting to close it and go back in.  Every so often, a clip will drop in perfectly.  Sometimes, just the audio drops in (no video).  This will take forever at this rate!  Any ideas?

You could try converting the clips to DV using MPEG Streamclip, then import the resulting QT DV clips into FCE. In MPEG Streamclip, select Export to QuickTime, then select Compression = "Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC" with a 720x480 frame size. I don't think that selecting "Other" frame size will work, I suspect it would still require rendering once in FCE.
    Alternatives
You could also try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to Apple Intermediate Codec, selecting the 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) frame size .
You might look into whether your camcorder can downconvert the video to DV during playback, and recapture the video in FCE using the DV-NTSC easy setup.
Provided one of these 3 techniques works, it will be better & faster than rendering your existing video clips in FCE.

iMovie lock up. I did hard reboot. Now Mac laptop won't start

Can you start up holding Command R to access your recovery partition? If so run Disk Utility to repair the boot volume, if not your hard drive may have failed. Without more information it's kinda hard to tell.

  • WRVS4400N Lock Up / Freeze

In the last couple weeks my router has begun to lock up / freeze.  Not sure the appropriate terminology to use for this.  The end result is wireless and wired connections stop functioning.  I can't connect to the routers web interface via wired.  I can't connect to any of the wireless SIDs.  The router just doesn't respond.  When I look at the router the lights are still blinking, but nobody seems to be home.  I have to unplug the router and do a 30 count and plug it back in to get it to return to working order.
At the time that this first occurred I mad not made any changes to the device in months, if not longer.  Was running great.  Not sure what happened.
Is anyone else experiencing this?  Has anyone else solved this problem?
Any thoughts or suggestions anyone might have would be very helpful.
    Thank you in advance.

Hi Steven, PPTP vpn did have a completely failure on the older firmwares about 2 years ago.
SSL VPN is a touchy subject. Not because the router fails at it but because most people do not understand that computer operating systems make things difficult. SSL VPN is a pretty sore subject for all vendors...
But to affirm, the SSL VPN works just fine, especially if you know how to set root on MAC or if you know how to stop the Windows features from blocking it...My opinion is most people are unhappy they can't simply set something up and it works and then calls the router a piece of junk because their computers are blocking features or an inadequate understanding to make it work.
Windows 8 is not heavily tested or documented yet but I imagine that will also have a number of belly aches if there isn't already especially with all of the browser integrations... (sigh)
I'm not up to par on the IPV6 limitations. That's something that won't be too well experienced until IPV6 is forced upon us.

  • Lock up / freeze RESOLVED (see final post)

Inserting/ejecting a CD or DVD (especially a blank rewritable) occasionally causes PC lock up/freeze.
No cursor, no nothing;  reboot required.  No error message.  No event error.   ASUS P8P67le,  I7-2600K
For the first time in a long while a freeze occurred today while NOT using either optical drive.
The machine was idle with Thunderbird mail on-screen.  When I turned back to it, it was frozen.

    Hi,
Please make sure to that it is not a “dirty” CD, and you already have the latest update of drivers
You can also try safe mode to eliminate some drivers conflicts.
Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode
I also wonder whether you can use Task Manager after the PC freeze, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, lunch Task manager, then view if there are abnormal information.

  • Got a new ext drive, now iMovie locks up when I turn Cam on to import film.

iMovie has been great up until I got a new Blackstar 250gb
    sata 800/400 external hard drive.
as soon as I turn my Conon GL2 camera on, iMovie locks up and the computer is acting up.
I'm using the fire wire 800 for the Blackstar hard drive
and the camera imports with the 400
If I get it to try to import It will import for 2 seconds and then a 5 second lock up and another 2 sec with a 5 sec lock, so on and so forth.
I have a 200gb VST hard drive for my music that has been fine.
I have used the internal drive for iMovie with the VST plugged in and I wanted another external for my Movies but the system does not like the Blackstar.
As soon as I unplug the Blackstar hard drive, it will import fine.
    Whats up with that?

    Hej Bo
Well 800/400 indicates that You bought a FW disk - That's GOOD. USB =NONO
Now did You format it as Mac OS Extended ??
NOT AS Mac OS Exchangable or DOS or UNIX. Will not work.
Some Canon Cameras want to be Daisy Chained with the hard disk:
Mac <-> ext Hard disk <-> Camera
Some other doesn't like this at all (like my Sonys)
I would free up space on the internal drive by moving files out to the ext. disk
then disconnect it and do the Capture/Import
then move the movie project out to the ext disk (if it really is necessary)
If in Göteborg - Check up Göteborg Film och Video-klubb

  • ITunes Locks Up/Freezes

Any ideas on fixing iTunes with Windows 7 64-bit. Constantly locks-up, freezes on me.
I figured it was from running my iTunes library on a NAS. But then I localized it as well. It's ridiculous. I can't even use iTunes anymore.

Log on? Log onto the computer?  iTunes itself doesn't have a log on unless you are automatically trying to connect to some service that requies it such as buying items from the store.  Do you really mean log on?

  • IMovie HD Keeps Freezing Up

I'm currently using a MacBookPro with iMovie HD.
I have imported approx 50 minutes of video clips (.dv) from a Cannon video camera via firewire, with the camera daisy chained through an external FW hard-drive. I was able to import the videos, but after all were downloaded the "letterboxing" application started running. This worked for about half the clips then locked up. After stopping the application and shutting down/re-starting I was able to start view the clips and start building and editing my project. Only using the "letterboxed" clips, this will work for a some time but then will freeze up and give me the multicolored beach ball. At that point I have to force quit which prevents me from even opening iMovie unitl I shut down the entire computer and start over.
The firewire dirve = Fantom Drives, 120 GB, firewire.
Any help with correcting this issue is much appreciated.

    Hello,
    Welcome to the discussions.
    A question:
Is the external drive Mac-formatted? You will have all kinds of problems with iMovie if it is not.
    Some comments:
Some people have reported problems with daisy-chaining Canons. Some of their camcorders like to be directly connected to Macs in order to import video footage. Does your MacBook have 2 Firewire ports? If so, use one for the external drive and one for the camcorder.
You do know that the iMovie app needs to be on your computer's drive? But the project can be on the external.
Lastly, have you tried deleting iMovie's preference file? With iMovie closed, go to Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist. Trash this plist file. iMovie will create a new one when you reopen it.
Relaunch iMovie and see if the problems are resolved.

  • IMovie 1.3 - "freeze frame?"

According to the new features for iMovie for the iOS, you can "Swipe up on the playhead to freeze a frame in your video."  Has anyone been able to figure out how to actually do this?

    Same issue here!
My original phone was the most stable phone I ever owned under 1.1.2. Then I upgraded to 1.1.3 and all **** broke loose.
My phone would randomly and VERY frequently freeze with the spinning wheel/gear in the middle of the screen.
The only thing that would unfreeze it would be to hold both buttons until the phone powered off. And yes while frozen the phone would get VERY hot. Whatever froze the phone apparently was still sucking the battery life causing the battery to get hot. Much like when you're talking on your iPhone for hours the battery will warm up due to usage.
After resetting/restarting the iPhone the battery would be neary depletion.
I would then wait about 10 mins and wouldn't you know it...locked up again.
It was getting extremely frustrating. Contacted Apple, they swapped me for another phone (running 1.1.2).
I waited a few days, then upgraded that to 1.1.3. Wouldn't you know it....it started locking up immediately after that update. Just like the other phone (after updating).
Now I'm on my 3rd phone running 1.1.2. I REFUSE to update this until 1.1.4 because I cannot continue to miss calls, have a hot battery in my pocket, and constantly keep checking my phone just to see if it's locked up.

  • IMovie locking up iMac on export

    iMac
    27 inch, Late 2013
    3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.9.5
    iMovie 10.0.5
I record youth football games every week, put together the pieces with minor editing in iMovie and then upload them to YouTube.  The Share to YouTube export option was regularly locking up my entire machine.  I've started exporting to File and then uploading the file to YouTube separately.  Even the Share to File locks up the machine from time to time.
I try to get this onto YouTube as soon as possible and the freezing the machine forcing me to restart the whole machine definitely slows me down as you can imagine.  Any ideas?

The only thing I've found that "fixes" this is moving to a new iMovie library when I have this problem.  That is very annoying.
    Would appreciate any ideas.

  • IQ506 Constant lock ups/freezes

Had the computer a little over a year now it started intermittingly freezeing about 3 months after we got it. Some thing I just kinda dealt with. It since then has become more and more frequent, to the point where the only way it wil run smoothly now is if I run it in safe mode with networking so I am able to get one the internet. I sat down last night and figured I would took a crack at it, I wne t through an A+ certification class a while back and am pretty familiar with computers. have run a msconfig and stopped a good bit of startups and that seemed to help a bit but it still freeeze a couple time a hour in normal mode. Have turned the power option to high making the performance better again seemed to help a bit. I also dicovered last night that most of the window updates have failed. I am running windows vista 64 bit SP1.  I attempted to install SP2 last night but was unbale. Seemed to have froze up on me mid install. I am almost sure that I am going to go get a external harddrive to backup all my data and do a system restore to factory, than install a new bios. My step daughter is on this thing all the time and i am constantly deleting programs, could this also be a culprit, virus maybe???? I have Norton anti virus installed and it is working fine.
Any suggestions or help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. I have been reading other posts and taken some of there suggestions and tried but had no luck

I have the same issue.  The computer seems to always 'lock up' in Internet Explorer at random times (but at least several times a day).   I can close the program with the task manager but the problem remains; also cannot reboot the computer using the Start button menu.  Other programs such as word seem unaffected.  When my handy-dandy HP Health Check suggests a critical update and I try to install it, I get the error message: "Error occurred While Handling Message."
In the end I have to hold down the manual power button until the computer shuts down.  Then upon restart the problem goes away for awhile until it locks up again.
This may be my last HP computer,,, my old Toshiba Laptop XP runs IE great.  Any ideas out there?

  • 3rd Gen Lock Ups / Freezes during everyday use

My 3rd Gen Click Wheel iPod has developed a freeze issue, where I'll be playing a song and suddenly the ipod locks up and none of the controls respond.
To try and fix this I've restored the ipod, zero formatted the drive (disk utility says all is fine) and then put 2gb of music on it to test.
I still get the same issue arising pretty much every time I use it now. Luckily, more often and not the click wheel doesn't respond, but the buttons at least do and I can re-boot the ipod to get it to respond. When I get totally locked out, I have to wait until it goes into sleep of drains the battery.
Battery life is still good as this is a late 3rd gen model. What gives? This happens to songs encoded by the latest version of itunes as well as older versions. The software is up to date to correct 'bug fixes', but is there a way of forcing the ipod to upgrade its software in case the ipod software has become trashed?
    Any help/suggestions please.

Well no answers but looks like it could possibly be a disk fragmentation issue. Diskwarrior showed 77% fragmentation of the iPod. Once I set it to work, the iPod changes tracks much more quickly.
    Hopefully that's sorted it...
