IMovie locks up on loading

Hi All
I have iMovie 11 and everytime I load it, it locks up whilst loading movies from iphoto. I have to force quite and when I reload again it asks about excluding an avi file in iphoto library. I exclude but then the same happens again.
Is there anyway of stopping it doing this. I have loads of movies from an old camera whcih probably got imported and would take an age to find them all
Thanks
Glenn

Hi again Glenn,
A quick way to find all your avi clips in iPhoto is to click on Events in the iPhoto Library, then in the bottom left corner use Search. In the Search box, type .avi or .AVI - this should bring up all the avi files in your iPhoto Library, showing a thumbnail for each video.
You can also create a Smart Album in iPhoto that will bring together all your movies into one album in the Library. From iPhoto's menu select File > New Smart Album, then adjust the settings to show as below:
By a process of elimination you may be able to track down any problem files in this Smart Album. Of course, the Search field I mentioned above will allow you to isolate just the avi files. Note that whenever you add a new video clip to iPhoto it will automatically appear in the Smart Album (a brilliant feature in iPhoto).
Anyway, first things first - let us know what the Format and FPS is for one of the avi clips (as I asked in my first post here).

The CD for iPhoto 2, iMovie 3 would not load in my Apple iBook Dual USB.
    It was "NOT AUTHORIZED".
Can anyone tell me what this means?
    Thank you

Take another look. A (nominal) 10 GB hard drive only has about 9.31 GB to begin with. The OS takes up some room, as do other applications.
Please check out how much space has been used and how much remains available.

  • Imovie locks up/crashes every time I drop a film clip into the project

Almost every time that I drop in a film clip to my current project, iMovie locks up and crashes producing a long readout for Apple.  I've made plenty of projects, but this one is due by Friday. I have to keep waiting to close it and go back in.  Every so often, a clip will drop in perfectly.  Sometimes, just the audio drops in (no video).  This will take forever at this rate!  Any ideas?

You could try converting the clips to DV using MPEG Streamclip, then import the resulting QT DV clips into FCE. In MPEG Streamclip, select Export to QuickTime, then select Compression = "Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC" with a 720x480 frame size. I don't think that selecting "Other" frame size will work, I suspect it would still require rendering once in FCE.
    Alternatives
You could also try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to Apple Intermediate Codec, selecting the 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) frame size .
You might look into whether your camcorder can downconvert the video to DV during playback, and recapture the video in FCE using the DV-NTSC easy setup.
Provided one of these 3 techniques works, it will be better & faster than rendering your existing video clips in FCE.

My iPhone locked up after loading iOS 7.0.2 and it will not reset using the home key / on-off button reset.  The screen returns to and iTunes icon and a 'cord' end that looks like the end of the power cord.

Can you start up holding Command R to access your recovery partition? If so run Disk Utility to repair the boot volume, if not your hard drive may have failed. Without more information it's kinda hard to tell.

  • Got a new ext drive, now iMovie locks up when I turn Cam on to import film.

iMovie has been great up until I got a new Blackstar 250gb
    sata 800/400 external hard drive.
as soon as I turn my Conon GL2 camera on, iMovie locks up and the computer is acting up.
I'm using the fire wire 800 for the Blackstar hard drive
and the camera imports with the 400
If I get it to try to import It will import for 2 seconds and then a 5 second lock up and another 2 sec with a 5 sec lock, so on and so forth.
I have a 200gb VST hard drive for my music that has been fine.
I have used the internal drive for iMovie with the VST plugged in and I wanted another external for my Movies but the system does not like the Blackstar.
As soon as I unplug the Blackstar hard drive, it will import fine.
    Whats up with that?

    Hej Bo
Well 800/400 indicates that You bought a FW disk - That's GOOD. USB =NONO
Now did You format it as Mac OS Extended ??
NOT AS Mac OS Exchangable or DOS or UNIX. Will not work.
Some Canon Cameras want to be Daisy Chained with the hard disk:
Mac <-> ext Hard disk <-> Camera
Some other doesn't like this at all (like my Sonys)
I would free up space on the internal drive by moving files out to the ext. disk
then disconnect it and do the Capture/Import
then move the movie project out to the ext disk (if it really is necessary)
If in Göteborg - Check up Göteborg Film och Video-klubb

  • IMovie locks up, freezes

Ever since I loaded the new iMove software about a year and a half ago, my iMovie software has been failing. I never had a problem with the original iMovie format, and my brother-in-law has no problems with his NEW iMovie software.
I can load pictures into it, and music. But after that, the entire program locks up. It "scrolls" through pictures, but the visual never changes from the very first picture in the series. The shape of the photo changes to match the next photo in the series, which is somewhat odd. The fan in the computer starts running very high and it stays there. It doesn't slow down, the computer doesn't do anything. It gives me the rainbow wheel, and won't let me click out of it to another program, it won't let me force quit. At that point, I can only force the shut down by holding the start button down. So my iMovie is useless.
If I load the new iLife software, do you think that will solve my problem?
I had the internal power supply replaced last year because the computer was going through a constant cycle of start, re-start, re-start, re-start, etc. The iMovie problems started around the same time. I also had 2 firewire ports that were dead and I could not successfully burn a video disc of any kind. When the power supply was replaced, the firewire ports came back to life. I was then able to burn discs with music and data, but I can't test anything involving video because iMovie just locks up as soon as I try.
I have about 14 GB of free space. iTunes works fine, internet runs smoothly. I can open documents, and garage band appears to function normally. So pieces of iLife are fine, but not iMovie, and presumably, iDVD. (I wouldn't know at this point.)
    Thoughts?

I had a similar problem. I purchased "the new iMac" in Sept.'07 with iMovie '08. I used the computer for 7 months for photography in iPhoto without connecting to the internet so I was not keeping up with software updates.
After working with iMovie for 1 project it started to run slow and sometimes freeze and I would have to shut off power and re-start. I was getting a similar freeze in iPhoto during editing a photo, especially when I was zoomed in on the photo using the slider in the lower right corner of the screen. Sometimes I would get an error message telling me to re-start the computer. It was very frustrating having these problems with a new computer that had never ben asked to do anything but iPhoto and iMovie.
Last May I took the computer back to where I bought it. They looked at the logs and saw that the graphics bd was related to the panic errors. All they did was run all of the software updates that had come out between September and May, which included iMovie update 7.1, iMac software update 1.2.1, iLife support 8.2, iMovie update 7.1.1 and iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3 among other updates not specific to iMovie or the OS. When I got the computer back everything worked beautifully. The tech noted that everything worked fine after the software updates and the EFI firmware update and there was no hardware problem. The machine is now connected to the internet and I am religious about keeping the updates current.
I am no expert, not even close (this is my first post) but I just wanted to say what worked for me. If you want to see what updates you have installed, in the Finder, click on the apple icon, then click on software update > preferences>installed updates. Here you can view what updates have been installed. Assuming you are connected to the internet I would run all the available software updates and see if that helps before you take it for service.
Maybe another reader of the forum can tell you if the other problems you were having with power supply could be related, or if your computer purchased this long ago is being asked to do too much?
    Good luck.

  • Lock tables when load data

Are there any way to lock tables when i insert data with SQL*Loader? or oracle do it for me automatically??
    how can i do this?
Thanks a lot for your help

Are there any problem if in the middle of my load (and commits) an user update o query data ?The only problem that I see is that you may run short of undo space (rollback segment space) if your undo space is limited and the user is running a long SELECT query for example: but this problem would only trigger ORA-1555 for the SELECT query or (less likely since you have several COMMIT) ORA-16XX because load transaction would not find enough undo space.
Data is not visible to other sessions, unless, the session which is loading data, commits it. That's the way Oracle handle the read committed isolation level for transaction.
    See http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96524/c21cnsis.htm#2689
Or what happens if when i want to insert data someone has busy the table? You will get blocked if you try to insert data that has the same primary key as a row being inserted by a concurrent transaction.

  • Imovie 08 refuses to load after upgrading to Leopard

I got Leopard for christmas and after upgrading imovie worked fine until I upgraded to imovie 08 with ilife. Now it refuses to load after it bounces it just stops and acts like as if I didn't even do anything. I've tried disk utility, and a bunch of other stuggestions but it dfidn't work.

Yes I did all of them. All of them appear to load except for imovie. and I did the installment of ilife 08. For some reason a folder appeared for the older version of imovie and that works fine even though i installed iLife 08, it suddenly made a folder today saying imovie (old version).
I don't get why it is doing that when the others work just fine.
Yes the display options are correct
The only one I know of is the divx codec I believe that is it.

  • My iMovie no longer will load. Message says, "You can't open the application "iMovie" because it is not supported on this architecture."

I have been using iMovie successfully and have several movies saved, but now iMovie will not load. I have OS 10.5.8 and I don't know what to do. Are there any suggestions? I'm not even familiar with the term "architecture" or why it would be different than it was.

iLife '06 is the newest version that includes iMovie that a G4 will run.  Any newer version of iMovie as included with iLife, will not run on a G4.

  • IMovie '11 slow to load at every launch (large iPhoto library to blame?)

I'm running 10.6.7 on a late 2010 13" macbook pro.  I have a very large iphoto library (over 200GB) that is full of movies made with various digital cameras.  I do have a casio AVI video codec installed into quicktime as a plugin, fyi, but all the movies and clips open fine within iPhoto when I double click them.
The first time I opened up iMovie it said that it needed to scan the iphoto library and then create thumbnails.  This took several hours, but finally completed.  When it finished, I could see all of my movies as events in the iPhoto Videos section of the Event Library within iMovie.
The problem I'm having is that every time I launch iMovie it takes 5 minutes or more to actually open up.  The program launches and then I get the spinning beach ball.  Opening activity monitor and shows iMovie as "unresponsive" and there is massive disk read activity for a long time.  It seems like it's scanning my drive and looking at a LOT of the files. Gigabytes of data is read.  After a while, it finally settles down and I can see all the events.  All of my clips appear to play fine within iMovie. But it makes using the program somewhat an awful experience as everytime I open iMovie I have to wait such a long time.
I tried trashing the preference file for iMovie and it asked me to recreate all the iPhoto library thumbnails.  But I was back to square one aftewards, the same thing... long, long startup time.
Any thoughts or helpful ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

iMovie remembers which you worked with last time you used it. If this is your iPhoto Library it will load all the thumbnails from iPhoto.
To manage your movie clips yourself you can make "events" for them.
    1) Make a new event from the File menu.
    2) Drag in the clips from iPhoto to that event.
    3) Wait until iMovie has made thumbnails for these clips only.
When you quit iMovie it will remember that you worked with this event the last time and it will only load those thumbnails. Much faster. And you can create a new event for the next batch of raw footage.
The downside of this is that you get some videos duplicated so you have them in both iPhoto and iMovie on your disk.

  • Imovie "locking up"

Lately, imovie has been locking up, giving me the spinning rainbow ball, whenever I open an existing project. Therefore I can't work on the project, play it or do anything because the spinning rainbow ball won't let anything happen.
A typical project will have somewhere between 50-100 Gigs of space available to it so it's not a space issue.
The project will probably have dv imported, still photos, transitions, audio separated, music which has been edited and probably 10-15 minutes in length.
I've cleared preferences, run utility on the hard-disk, everything I can think of or find in these forums.
    Any ideas or experience?

Thank you for responding. The music comes from audio CD's, not iTunes. I'm not sure why that would effect the entire project from locking up for long periods of time with the rainbow ball just spinning.
Any other ideas how I can fix this so iMovie runs?
