IMovie "loses" footage in events

For the past couple of weeks. iMovie has been acting up. I use iMovie in a business setting, basically filming short little interviews. In the course a filming, say I do 5 takes. By the time I reach the 5th take, Take 1 and 2 are nolonger in iMovie. They just completely disappear. I record everything directly into iMovie via HD Camcorder and a Firewire.
They aren't deleted though, however as they are still in the events folder but for whatever reason iMovie can't display them anymore. If I try to drag the clip back into iMovie it tells me it doesn't support the format (.dv).
This is really annoying. The only work-around I have so far is to use iMovie HD, since I am able to drag the iMovie '08 event (from the folder) into iMovie HD and edit it.
I've tried everything, reinstalling iMovie, trying from a different user account, creating a new event for each import (instead of importing everything to a single event), calling Apple, etc.
I've noticed that a telltale sign that footage is about to disappear is when the thumbnails become gray and the sound goes out. I usually have to restart iMovie after this, but upon restart the footage will be gone.

I have this problem as well.
Will switching to iMovie 06 solve things?
I'm seeing a lot of unresolved forums on this support that relate to erratic behavior in iMovie, like this one. Doesn't anyone from Apple have solutions?
I've got a mess now in iMovie '08, with lost footage in events (what I call disappearing clips), the wrong clip thumbprint showing up in the project area, duplicated thumbprints. Audio is not synched properly in some of the clips in the event area as well, and yet these clips have perfect audio when played in QuickTime.
Bueller? Anyone?

  • "Import" splits takes into clips and loses footage

When importing footage from both my Sony HDV camcorder (directly) and my Sony DVCAM camcorder (via a Sony DSR-11 deck) to my Mac Mini using firewire cables, FCPX breaks some takes into multiple shorter clips.
Whilst this could just be annoying, it's much worse than that as it loses footage as it does it, at the unwanted clip breaks.
FCP Studio used to give the option of auto splitting imports into clips, FCPX appears not to.
Any ideas for preventing the automatic splitting of takes?
    Thanks.
P.S. Most recently, my one minute of colour bars is now six separate clips!

I don't run iMovie 08, so am not entirely familiar with it's use. I think that you can export each iMovie 08 clip to a new iMovie 08 project, then export that new project (containing one clip) to Quicktime, and from there import into iM6 for editing.

  • Getting iMovie 9.0.9 events that are AVI files into iMovie 10

I have a TB of iMovie 9.0.9 events that are AVI files.  What is the best way to get those files into iMovie 10 which does not accept AVI.  Should I just import all the dv tapes again?  Thanks for any help.

Since projects are separate from events in iMovie 9 but contained within events in iMovie 10, when they are updated iMovie 10 does not know in which events to put projects so they tend to be grouped together in a special event called "Updated Projects" (as far as i remember).   This is normal.  They can however be moved into appropriate events afterwards.
I'm not clear what the answer is to: "Have all the events that contain media required by these problem projects transferred to iMovie 10?"
"The trouble with working in iMovie 10 is that my work would not be available in iMove 9 if I decide to switch back!"   This is true but you won't know unless you try it out.  It is also an opportunity to compare doing the same editing in both versions.
"When I look at All Projects, many of the video markers are blank until I double click on them."   The project 'icons' (thumbnail with chevrons above) often appear blank (black).  This seems to a common behaviour but it does not cause any problems with the project.   No-one seems to know how imovie chooses which clip to use in these icons.

  • IMovie 10.0.8 Event Footage Not Sync'd After Green Screen Conversion

I am using iMovie on a 2013 Late Macbook Pro 13" Retina 2.4 GHz iCore i5, 8GB RAM., Intel Iris 1536 MB.  I record on Canon 1080p 30 fps MXP.  The event footage plays fine with green screen (GS) background.    But when I create a Movie and first add background then event footage and convert to GS to replace GS with picked background, the video eventually gets out of sync with the video.

  • Can I password protect my iMovie 9 or 11 event and/or project?

I have created an event in iMovie09 using the internal MACbook camera.  I want to password protect the event so that no one can open/view the movie without the appropriate password - I need to provide 2 levels of security for the movie for privacy purposes.  Can I save the file outside of iMovie, password protect it, and then import it into iMovie when I'm ready to view?  I'm open to multi-step ways to make it happen!

    you have diff. options:
    • what I would do, simply purchase some small 2.5" usb-drive, drag Project&Events FROM WITHIN iMovie onto it and put ext.drive in a 'secure' place. whenever you have to work with these Events, plug it in, you're done.
    • … if Events are small, and wallet big, you get 128GBs usb-flash mem-sticks .... tape the stick under a drawer (omg! I told the secret place!!)
    • if you need that extra grain of security: after transfering the two folders, create a disk-image with the disk-utility, apply a secure password, drag both folders into it - you can NOT work from such a disk-image, you have to have it manually open and drag both folders out of it into original location.
btw: you lose the pw, all data is lost! no way to restore it … ok, some friends in Fort Meade could ……
    • finally: why keeping this stuff at all? complete the Project, export the final movie, erase all traces. keep the movie where and how you like (see above suggestions).
being paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you!
scnr, I HAD to add that

  • IMovie backup and duplicate events....

So i am moving up my works video archives onto an external drive and havig a few issues.
Whenever i move a project and event in iMovie it creates a new event folder will all the clips for each project i move.
The problem is that the projects and events are not always one-to-one. ie there are multiple projects from one event, and some prokects from many events.
When I move the projects across all the events are copied as well, giving me duplicate event folders of the extact same footage.
I tried to merge the events, but that just gives me multiple clips in the single folder.
The worst so far is 9 copies of a single event because grabs from event have been used in 9 projects.
As a result my external hard drive is filling up very very quickly.
I have tried making alias, but iMovie doenst recognise them.
Any suggestion in how to fix this?
    Thanks SGIT

    Hi Paul,
I tested with 3.7.1.4 and 3.7.1.5. In both versions I can see the issue.

  • IMovie: How to  use events with low resolution?

When I have a less than HD (either 720p or 1080p) movie I like to reduce the size of the screen that it is showing in. Since I like to show my movies on a 1080p 55 inch lcd screen, I really don't enjoy having these 640 x 480 or smaller movies blown into a blurry mess.
What I have done is make a piece of blue or other color footage and enlarge it to whatever length I need by dragging pieces from the event into the project story board. Then I open up a new event and bring in the less than stellar resolution movie.
I drag this movie into the Project Story Board, and click on PIP on the resulting menu. I put a border around the PIP movie and enlarge it to a size that still has it sharp. Then I trim the movie to what fits.
IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO DO THIS?

I think that's an excellent method. It works for you and is a straightforward workflow. You may already be doing this (and I haven't tested it), but you could drag coloured backgrounds to your project from the Maps, Backgrounds and Animatics panel (centre toolbar far right). Then do your PIPs as you described.
I can't think of a better solution using iMovie. Probably it can be done differently in Final Cut Pro X (available from the Mac App Store).

  • How to transfer imovie '09 footage to another mac?

I downloaded video from camcorder to my imac. How can I get footage from my imac to my macbook pro without downloading from camcorder again? I tried to drop into a memory stick but could not do it. Any suggestions?

If you have not used your footage in a project, you can find the footage in the Movies/iMovie Events you can do a simple copy in the Finder.
Copy the Event folder and place it at the exact same place on your other Mac. (Movies/iMovie Events/Event Name. Then start iMovie on the second machine.
If you have used the Event footage in a project, and you want to preserve your project, you must make the move within iMovie.

  • Imovie loses date code when moving library

I have years of taped video that I have imported without a date code and I have manually added the correct date within iMovie.
To save space I have now moved these files within iMovie to an external drive.  All appears fine at first, the Event Library has all the correct dates on the new drive.  However, when iMovie is closed and then reopened, it loses all the manually added dates, and I have one event for the date the files were imported from tape.
I have searched a lot of forums but have not found an answer.  I could just do all that manually work again on the new drive, but there must be an easier way.
    Would upgrading to iLife11 help?

I tried copy and delete in finder, but iMovie lost track of the files completely, perhaps you meant copy within iMovie, I'll try that later.
I just downloaded a free trial of Final Cut Pro X, and imported Imovie events.  Again, this completely ignored all the time and date data added manually in iMovie.  If it's a bug it I would have thought a few more people might have come across it.
    Cheers

  • IMovie loses first frame

I am using iMovie v9.0 from iLife '11 to import .AVI movie clips recorded by a Primos TruthCam3 onto an SD card. The clips are imported to the Event Library just fine. Each clip contains a line at the bottom of the first frame with info like date, time, etc. When I move the clip to the project area, this line does not appear in the project. iMovie appears to lose the very first frame of the event.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

OK. I found the problem. iMovie v9 is clipping the event when I move it into the project. Creating a still frame of the first frame and adjusting the clipping allows one to show the capture information.

  • How to move imovie '08 projects and events from one macbook to another

    Hi,
I need to import my movies via firewire, but can only do it through my brother's macbook, as my new macbook does not have firewire.
Therefore, I imported 100 GB worth of movies onto his computer, then transferred the iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders onto a hard drive, then transferred them from the hard drive to MY macbook. Now they are sitting on the desk top.
How do I get them into iMovie on my macbook, now that I have transferred the files from my brother's macbook onto my macbook's desktop?
    Thanks!

I guess I just needed to drag my events into my user folder ---> movie events, and then when I launched iMovie, it found them.

  • How can I export an iMove Project if the Event file was deleted?  (Missing Media error message)

    Deep iMovie question:
I accidentally deleted various EVENT files from my iMove EVENTS folder.  Yes, they are really gone ... this is NOT a matter of restoring them from the trash.
The projects are still there ... I can still watch the projects as long as I am in iMovie ... but if I try to export the Project I get the MISSING MEDIA error message.
Logic tells me that if I can view the project ... the  file has to be SOMEWHERE inside my computer ... else I couldn't be watching it ... right?  I mean what am I watching if not some file somewhere which has moving pictures stored in it?
So HOW do I get to something I can export?  What am I watching when I watch the project?
I have iMove 08 on iMac with OS 10.6.8
Normally works great for my simple needs ... except if you move or delete an event file ...
    Can anyone out there help?
    thank you,
    Natasya

If you don't have the original files then I'm afriad you don't have anything to work with.
    Regards
    TD

  • How do I save my imovie '09 project and events to an external drive? I tried to drag it but it won't accept it?

I've been able to save/move things to my Western Digital Passpor beforet but this time it won't let me drag the project or event to the external drive.
Tons of space left on the drive. The prioject is not finished. Do I have to optimize it or something? Thanks for all replies.

external drives come out-of-the-box 'Windows'/fat32 formatted.
no prob for a Mac - except for iMovie.
use the Disk-Utility in your Apps/Utilities folder to format to 'Mac'.-
