Imovie making cuts

When I try to import video from my Sony MiniDV cam into imovie, it usually works. There's one piece of video though, it's about 8 minutes long, and imovie is chopping it up into 6 and 8 second pieces. How do I get it to import in one piece?
macbookpro

By default, iMovie starts a new clip at each scene break. You can turn that off in the iMovie Preferences, under Import, "Start a new clip at each scene break".
If that doesn't do it, you might have some sort of capture problem (see Sue's reply on some things to check).

  • IMovie - Final Cut Pro ? Same Quality DV Video?

I would like to know if iMovie and Final Cut Pro have the same ".dv" quality in producing a movie.
Is there any 'loss' in the digital video quality if you use iMovie?
Can I get professional results equal to Final Cut Pro .. without all the bells and whistles?

    Definitely.
You can't see any difference between DV material edited with iMovie, Final Cut Express, or Final Cut Pro. There is no "loss" in the digital quality if you use iMovie.

  • IMovie / Final Cut ?

Trying to use Voltaic but now I get a message saying I need to reinstall iMovie /Final Cut! Because it can not find AIC.
    How do I do that!

Just to expand on that. Usually imovie or FCE would put that particular file in that location, assuming you have either installed then the file should be there.

  • I use a GoPro 960 30.  When I use imovie it cuts off the feet and the head

    I am using a GoPro at 960 30
When i use imovie it cuts off the feet and the head.
    how do I prevent that?

Here are some things to check.
If possible, set the aspect ratio of your project to the same aspect ratio as your camera. This will be either 16:9 or 4:3.
If your clips or photos are not the same as your project's aspect ratio, you can select a project clip and
click on the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool. FIT will make the movie fill out the screen by Letterboxing. Crop will cut off the edges to fill the screen.
Finally, you may have analyzed for stabilization, and then had stabilization automatically applied in your project. Stabilization works by zooming in. You can select a project clip and open the Clip Inspector. You can turn off stabilization, or you can move the slider so there is less zoom.

  • Hello, I would like to import dvd film to iMovie to cut it. but I movie says that quicktime cannot read it (-2048) What can I do?

Hello, I would like to import dvd film to iMovie to cut it. but iMovie says that quicktime cannot read it (-2048) What can I do? thanks for an answer!

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Preferred input format with VHS via Canpous 55 to iMovie/Final Cut Express

I am using VHS deck to Canpus 55 to iMovie 08/MacBook Pro.
I do the input to iMovie 08 as it is less problematic for input than Final Cut Express and also I can share these with family for their video making in iMovie.
However I import the video files from iMovie events to FCE for editing.
    1. I notice the VHS-to Canopus-to iMovie are .dv files with frame size 720x480 and compressor file says DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, not Apple Intermediate Codec.
    2. I also import AVCHD files and those are frame size 960x540 and compressor is Apple Intermediate Codec.
When I bring the .dv files in from iMovie 08 to FCE, I sometimes get the warning about the files not in the standard settings and the drop down list of settings include Apple Intmediate Codec in various choices and the NTSC in various choices.
Should these be somehow standardized or will the eventual output be ok? I had one VHS 15 min segment look great on the computer in iMovie, then FCE but was very digitized after output to iDVD.
    Thanks for the help.

    ... and I also don't have Imovie.
    you do.
on the Installer Disks, your Mac came with, there's 'Installed software', which allows to install the iLife Package only.
for most of your needs, esp. being no professional editor , iM offers all you need:
    https://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/how-to-make-a-vidcast
shows you how to use pic-in-pic, green-sceen, integration of 'charts' and other 'effects' of iM, to produce a vidcast.
    -Subtitles
'Subtitles' is for me a switchable feature on DVD ... if you mean 'titles in lower third' - any editor offers this. what iM does NOT offer, is a free-locatable title (or e.g. logo-bug), but there's a simple workaround working with transparent pngs, see my site too ....-
-Split screen video. Half/Half or Full screen for one video source, and a tiny screen say on the top left of another source...
    side-by-side? iM no, FC yes.
-Export video in ipod compatible format
afaik, any Apple video-app allows that ..
    general advice:
    • iM is meant for consumers - convenient, but limited.
    • FC/e or /p is meant for (semi)professionals - what iM offers as a 'one click done'-solution, is a many-steps-process with some background-knowledge and understanding needed.
    • for sure, FC offers MUCH more options .. any option, you'll soon get lost
    • the learning curve for FC is steep! buy a book of master-mind TOM WOLSKY, who generously participates here at this board ...-
    • I don't see a need for you in spending 1.000$ more for the FC/pro suite ... Motion? Color? Compressor? Highly complex tools for even more complex processing ...
I would 'play' with iM to get familiar with your project - what do you need, how should it look? if you reach the limits, have a look at FC/e at any Apple-store ... if it doesn't scare you, get the app and the book, and spend some months studying ...
and Welcome misterdmmc to the  boards ...

  • Itunes, Imovie, Final Cut   ALL WONT OPEN

So i have recently deleted my quicktime, and then I tried to re-install.
When i tried to re-install, It told me that quicktime was already on my computer so i went and searched for allll quicktime components i could find and trashed them, thinking i could completely remove it that way and then re-install.
Now, my ITUNES, my IMOVIE and my FINAL CUT, well basically anything that uses video or audio wont open at all. It says it quit unexpectedly but it doesnt open in the first place.
I SOMEHOW managed to install quicktime 7 but it wont open either. I guess i deleted something important, I just wish i knew what it was so i could try and restore it.
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!
I need these applications for school, etc. HELP
    (Time Machine NOT set up)

You now need to reinstall your entire operating system from the original install disks.
You will also have to reinstall all Apple applications that install "add-on" QT components, as well as, any third-party components you may require. Depending on your specific method of re-installation, you may also have to purge PLIST files as well. If you really messed with the QT structure imbedded in the OS rather than simply deleting player apps and components that support the imbedded structure externally, I personally would back up all projects and data files I wanted to keep and then wipe and test the hard drive before performing a complete "clean" install. And, even if you only deleted the superficial apps and suppornt components, you will likely have to re-install the packages that would replace everything you've removed and stil may have to purge the PLIST files to get the replaced apps to open properly. Even then, you may come across some broken links to certain components owing to some apparent inconsistancies the in installation/re-installation and software upgrade work flow. (E.g., you may end up with the wrong or a non-functioning iMovie '08/'09 "AppleMPEG2Codec.component" being installed.) In short, as Klaus1 indicated, you may have opend a real "can of worms" from which it may be difficult to extricate yourself.

  • I just bought the new 2014 Mac Mini 2.6 8Gig for $699 at the Apple Store Online. I want to use it for light editing in iMovie making video's for YouTube, I couldn't afford the higher priced models. Is this going to work for me? I hope so..

Will this do basic video editing for YouTube Video's in iMovie, I hope so.  It's all I could afford.
Just under $800 with tax and Applecare.
    It's stock 2.6 8gigs 1 terabyte hard drive.
I have two monitors DVI that I plan to hook to it.
I know it's weak but will it get me going without too much hardship.
I want to grow into the more high priced computers and Final Cut Pro later on.
I know I will need a bigger computer then.
    Thanks

There are many people using the basic (i5) 2012 MacMini and even older ones to edit complex films in FCP X so you should have no problems.
I have been using FCP 7 and FCP X since they came out on my 2008 iMac Core 2 Duo and am thinking of getting the same model as you rather than pay the astronomic price for a new 27" iMac.
The performance won't be quite as fast but it will be at least 4 times faster at rendering than my old iMac.

  • Imovie/Final Cut project compatibility

Can you open Imovie digitized movie clips/bin in Final Cut Pro.
I hope so because, I've digitized a ton of media into Imovie, which I'm going to end up editing on Final Cut Suite.

Yes, you just need to find the iMovie QT files and bring them into FC. Don't delete the files! Importing them into FC just gives FC a reference to the original media. And, one big advantage to FC is the ability to log & capture footage. Very beneficial in terms of capturing only what you want (which saves HD space) and in terms of editing since you have already previewed the clips you have captured.

  • IMovie, Final Cut, Quicktime, online... a different colour in each!

The same video - Photo Jpeg format from a Panasonic LX3 digital camera - looks different in Final Cut, QuickTime and iMovie.
The "gamma shift" problems with FCP are well documented and I don't think I can be bothered to put anymore effort into finding a solution.
My editing projects are simple so maybe iMovie, I thought, would be enough...
But then I open the same video in QuickTime and iMovie and see that in the latter it is considerably darker and more contrasty.
Obviously, if I don't know which version is correct, I can't even begin to adjust the colours and contrast of the video.
Does anyone know where this difference might come from and exactly how I should set my system up so I can get on with editing rather than spending days trying to find information on the internet?
I'm using a calibrated Apple Cinema Display (2.2 gamma, 6500°k) and want to export edited video that can be viewed online via blip.tv.
Someone must have a solution... But I'm getting close to giving up on all this and using Avid or Adobe Premiere.
And one other problem in iMovie: if I try to adjust the exposure of my LX3 video it becomes rapidly desaturated, even black and white.

Yes Kirk, I did see your post, thankyou.
I haven't tried it yet but I will although I'm still unclear as to what it is supposed to achieve: is it to match my monitor's gamma to FCP output? (I assume this is the case). If so, how does this solve the problem of needing to export a file that will display correctly on other people's machines - Mac and PC -that are either calibrated to, or default to, 2.2 gamma and 6500°K? Sorry if my question is basic but I'm trying to understand this.
I've read the Apple information about FCP using 1.8 gamma and that being the gamma of a broadcast monitor. My problem is that my stuff will never see a broadcast monitor, being entirely destined for the web and I was hoping to be able to set up some sort of simple workflow that took that into account.

  • How to achieve smaller file size in iMovie after cutting or cropping

iMovie saves unused material, so that even if I remove (crop or cut) unwanted footage, I am left with the same large file size for the project.
The same seems to be true if I split a clip, and delete the unwanted portion and empty the trash.
I have saved selected portions to Quicktime and then set up another iMovie project using the smaller trimmed file. Is there a better way to do this - entirely within the iMovie environment?
    Thanks,

You should export as .dv (not .mov) and import it back.
Or export to tape and import it back.
Or downgrade to iMovie 4 and make very good backups (emptying the trash while trimming the clips sometimes corrupts the project in iMovie 1-4!!).

  • IMovie/Final Cut Compatibility Problems

Hey, I have a video project that I'm working on. I was able to "dump" it successfully into final cut, but I cannot get the video to work with iMovie on my macbook. Are there certain steps I must follow to get them to work together? I tried exporting it as a Quicktime movie and that didn't work either. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
This looks like a standard mini-dv camcorder, so you should be fine (working with iMovie is not always a reliable test). You'll need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable; USB won't work.
The safest test would be to take your camera to an Apple Store if there's one close by.

  • Imovie clip cuts not actually being cut?

Using iMovie I'm trying to take one 30min clip and use only a 4min chunk out of the middle of it. I've cut the parts I don't need out and my project looks how I want and when I hit play from begining it plays the clip how it should be. But when I hit play in fullscreen movie it plays the whole clip as if unedited! In the project viewer it shows the 4min clip part I want and nothing else. Ive highlighted that clip and hit finalize and then post to youtube. Then youtube tells me clip is too long cant upload. It shows the blank movie as being 30mins long. How is this happening!?

Ah, then your in the wrong forum.
This is iMovie iOS (iPads, iPhones e.t.c).
I'll try to get this moved to the correct forum.
