Imovie malfunction

I've been using Imovie on this machine for a over a year now and it has been working just fine. My usual procedure is to connect my Sony Mini DV camcorder via firewire. When I open Imovie, I set it to save the clips and project to external harddrive connected via Firewire 800. Recently I've been experiencing the following issues:
1) After selecting "import", Imovie starts the camcorder playback and the camcorder begins to play. Before anything is captured, Imovie shuts down. I receive the message "Imovie has shut down but all other programs are unaffected" (or something like that). It then asks if I want to send a report to Apple. Part of the report reads as follows:
Date/Time: 2009-01-19 11:23:47.886 -0800
OS Version: 10.4.11 (Build 8S2167)
Report Version: 4
Command: iMovie HD
Path: /Applications/iMovie HD.app/Contents/MacOS/iMovie HD
Parent: WindowServer [59]
Version: 6.0.3 (6.0.3)
Build Version: 14
Project Name: iMovieApp
Source Version: 2670200
PID: 250
Thread: 0
Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x356594ff
There is of course a lot more info than this but I thought I would share this and see what response I get.
2) Another symptom I sometimes experience is Imovie will start and capture fine but the desktop is visible through the Imovie screen. The Imovie screen is all there and functional, its just see-through (opaque?). When this happens, the whole process works fine beginning to end. When finished capturing I can do all my editing and whatever else I want to do, save it and use the project in IDVD just like normal.
Both of these problems can usually be remedied by turning the computer off and then back on. Once in awhile it has to be rebooted more than once in order to clear things up.
Looking forward to any help I can get.

I deleted the 'com. apple.imovie.plist file, however there was no number behind it. This seems to help, for the next 1 or 2 times that I open Imovie but then the problem presents itself again. Must I delete this file on a regular basis or is something else we can try.
I've been a little busy and don't have a lot of time to spend on this, thus the slow response from me. But I do thank you for your help and quick response.

  • Can't import to external FW HD from camcorder with iMovieHD

    Hi all,
Ever since I upgraded from iLife04 to iLife05, I've had problems importing movies from my camcorder into my PB.
After doing numerous "do this trick" fixes, I finally got it to work reliably... as long as I do not have any other FW connected to the PB!!!
my internal HD is full (don't have free 13G space on my internal HD where I can dump 60min .dv file), so I cannot just keep importing into internal HD without shuffling several Gb worth of files back and forth between the PB and the external. Camcorder is connected to the FW400 port, and the external LaCie drive is connected to teh FW800 port (HD has its own power source, so the FW800 port is not driving current to the external HD. just data connection).
with the FW800 HD connected, iMovie HD croaks upon trying to import movie--usually after about 1second of import, it loses the image even if the camcorder keeps playing. and all the control button stops working. usually requires "kill -9" command from the terminal and a reboot to get iMovieHD working again. Sometimes after about 10min after I hit the iMovie "stop" button, it might finally stop and show "camera not connected". basically, iMovie malfunctions badly.
now, with the exact same setup (FW800 external HD, FW400 camcorder) worked just fine using iLife04/iMovie4. So for now, I've been working around by booting up in a differnet partition with iLife04, import movie, then reboot into the main partition, and edit using iMovieHD. very painful.
any insight on this? is one of my FW ports fried? I've tried different cables, etc.. no luck. I have also checked to make sure the firmware on LaCie is the most recent.
all this happens with various flavors of Tiger OS. haven't tried installing iLife05 on my Panther partition (may be I should try).

    Hi,
I'm a UNIX sys admin in other systems (SunOS, HPUX, etc) so UNIX is rather second nature to me. Been using UNIX since '85, Macs since '90 (forced to use Windoze in '97, and hating every moment of it). When MacOS merged with UNIX, I was mighty happy
as for the OS build, I do an archive-and-install prior to OS updates (I usually accumulate two updates before I do archive-install), to wipe out any accumulated garbage that may taint the OS (you dont' want to be doing this with other UNIX OS, but MacOS makes it easy). This is easy for me to do also, since I don't really install any system enhancement apps much so reconfiguring it back to what it was before doesn't take all that much time. Latest update that went through this archive-and-install is to 10.4.5. Haven't installed the latest security updates (there seems to be some weirdness with it, so..).
in any event, this iMovieHD inability to import movies has prevailed from 10.3.9 through 10.4.5... although I've had the most success in getting it mostly working at 10.4.4 level (never could get the import working at all at around 10.4.3)...
Startup partition has approximately 8Gb free (it's a 15Gb startup partition). I looked at the VM allocation prior to partitioning, and it said 5G VM use, so I made sure there will be at least that much available free space after OS install.
I will never use a computer where I don't keep OS and user files in a separate partition, also insist on a secondary OS partition in case the primary fails (so I can still startup the darn thing. this secondary OS partition is very small, since it's only meant to be used for emergency use, and only has applications relevent to recovering data, repair etc). Had enough drive crashes and other problems hwere having separate partition was the only thing that saved me from losing the entire content of the hard drive (and yes.. all the files are periodically updated to my external). Also, makes it easy to do housecleaning (defrag, etc).. since sysOS partition and applications don't get defragmented all that much, only thing I'll have to "keep clean" usually is the user partition.
80Gb internal is plenty large to have good partitioning scheme.
    anyway.. I digress...
if it is a matter of having enough swap space on the startup partition to run iApps, then i shouldn't be able to import to any hard drive, internal or external. if the iApps likes to dump temp files in the working directory, then internal (if I can do it) will be working with 13Gb free space while the external has 150Gb free space. again, not the problem..
so the issue is something with the FW use... I guess it's unclear whether this is an OS problemFW hardware problem, iMovieHD problem, or (gasp!) quicktime problem.

  • Audio malfunction in iMovie 9.0.2 upgrade

Up graded to 10.6.6 snow leopard and 9.0.2 iMovie now half the existing audio tracks wont work in my current project. NEW tracks I import wont work either. When I start a NEW project everything seems to work.
Did I corrupt my project w/ the upgrade?
Any way to get the audio tracks to work again w/out starting anew and losing 22 hours of labor?
Any help would be DEEPLY appreciated

Try deleting iMovie's preference file. This often fixes things when iMovie is misbehaving.
The file is named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist" and is located in your User (Home) Library>Preferences folder. Quit iMovie if it is open then drag the .plist file to the Trash. When next opened iMovie will automatically create a new preference file with the default settings. You may need to change some settings to suit your own preference. To do this, go to iMovie's menu and select iMovie>Preferences then make your preferred settings in each of the tabs.
The preference file can become corrupted in some circumstances, such as when iMovie quits unexpectedly. Deleting the file is usually the first troubleshooting thing to try. See this Apple article for more information about iLife Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3249
    Hope this helps!

  • Saving and backing up iMovie projects

Here is a question I never dreamed I'd be asking: how do you save an iMovie "project"? Since 1984, every Mac application has had "Save" under the "File" menu where you could name and save your file. "Save often" became the main way to avoid disaster in the event of a application malfunction. Idiocy reigns at Apple; saving is no longer possible. Now I know iMovie is supposed to auto-save, but really...the Web is full of disaster stories of crashed apps and lost files.
Anyway, I want to do several things: 1.) I want to save my project so that I can open it at a later date and work on it again. 2.) Related to #1, I want to start a new project, confident that my old project is still accessible. 3.) I want to do twice daily back-ups of my working project so that if iMovie crashes I don't lose more than a half day of work.
All of this has become almost automatic in my nearly 25 years of working on Macs. File saving and backing up are one of the few constants that, until iMovie, were unchanged. Apple, in a regrettable display of poor decisionmaking, has abandoned this tried and true procedure. I really hope I'm missing something simple and I have to eat my words. Can anyone help me save my files? Thanks. By the way, no Time Machine here. I want to save these files manually.

Quit iMovie and open it later when you want to restart your project.

In iMovie, menu File > New. It will open a dialog box that allows you to name your new project and set the aspect ratio you will use.
You can see your old projects by clicking the "Project Library" button at the upper left corner of the iMovie window. It will show you all your projects. You can duplicate or rename any project, as you wish, in the library. If you want to edit an older project, select it in the library and then click the button "Edit Project" in the upper left corner of the iMovie window.
3.) I want to do twice daily back-ups of my working project so that if iMovie crashes I don't lose more than a half day of work.
iMovie store the projects and project events in the folder Home Folder username > Movies > iMovie Projects and Home Folder username > Movies > iMovie Events. Feel free to back up those folders as often as you'd like. I would incorporate some kind of naming convention that allow you to readily see the date/time of your backup, but that is up to you. If you crash for some reason, you can restore the contents of the folders from your backups.

Well, hmmmmmmm. Most mission critical software that I know, such as QuickBooks Pro, or Filemaker Pro do not have save commands, as I guess the designers feel that it is safer to have the program do the auto-save after every change the operator makes than leaving it up to the operator to remember.
Even Final Cut Pro, Apple's flagship edit software, has built in auto-save *in addition to* the manual save commands. I have my auto-save in FCP set to every two minutes.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problems with event import on iMovie 10.0.3

My complete movie libraries works fine with iMovie 9.0.9. There are no other malfunctions. The filessystem is clean.
After upgrading to iMovie 10.0.3 the initial startup event and project update process fails on serveral older events and I have problems to import this events folders.
Why does V. 10.0.3 has problems with some older events ?  What to do to get this files properly ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • TS3391 iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project.

iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project. I googled the problem and there were discussions about deleting files in various folders and renaming clip extensions. I don't like the solutions I saw there and I am not sure they will work.

Nobody replied so I called Apple. They seemed to think they could fix the problem but I had to agree to pay about $20 first. I told them to put it down as a complaint. I only want to use the software I bought. I can't see that it is my fault it is malfunctioning. I guess I will have to pay. It doesn't seem right.

  • Frustating Import over iMovie as Final Cut throws errors

I have recorded some WOW videos (using Apple intermediate codec, 25 fps) and Final Cut Pro fails, if I try to import the file directly.
But iMovie imports it without any problem. Export to XML works sometimes, sometimes not. Exporting to Quicktime (using Apple Intermediate, 25 fps) from iMovie and then importing this file in Final Cut Pro is the only solution.
I'm really disappointed that a big suite like Final Cut Pro is NOT able to import files, that iMovie imports without problems.
Apart from this every application I tried (Quicktime, Cinema Tools etc.) is able to open the file.
Error message Final Cut Pro is in german:
Dateifehler: 1 Datei(en) erkannt, Zugriff auf 0 verweigert, 1 unbekannt
Translated this may be something like
File error: 1 file(s) identified, Access on 0 denied, 1 unknown

Sorry, but why should I call those video guys. It works for most of the programs and if FCP is pickier, than at least I expect, that it can do the same transformation as I'm doing with a workaround (import into iMovie, export again and import it into FCP)
I've no problem if FCP tells me it has to correct some characteristics to fit with the desired FCP quality. But giving me strange error messages and not doing anything is a simple malfunction for this price I paid.
And I have a workaround, so why start with more workarounds.
I would like to have a solution. But Apple is not available directly, so I can claim this malfunction or do you have a mail address, where you can claim bugs in FCP?
Thanks for all your good intentions, but I want a program that works or at least tells me clearly, which standard is not fulfilled by the video I want to import (and why other Apple programs are able to deal with it). Especially if the price is not just a few dollars.

  • Imovie was unsaved and needs to be recovered how do i do this?

Hi I really need help a big project I was working on for days in imovie suddenly malfunctioned and I really really need to recover it please i need help with this i would really apericiate it!!!!!!!

First, when you e-mail a PDF you have to be sure the e-mail package you use encodes the PDF as binary file, not all do automatically. If the PDF is sent as an ASCII (text) file, then it will be corrupted. That is likely what happened. The alternative is to zip the PDF and send the zip file.
Fix ups are generally done in the application you used. The PDF should be a duplicate of what you see in your APP. If you are using WORD, be sure the selected printer in WORD is the Adobe PDF printer during your editing. WORD and many other word processors reflow documents based on the attached printer. It is not clear what your problem is, but that might be the issue.
As for forms, are you actually creating an electronic form or is this something that looks form for someone to print and fill in. If you want an electronic form, then you need to use the Form Tools in the tools menu. You can let Acrobat try to guess the form fields that are needed, then go back and edit the form fields. Of course, you may not have actually meant a form as such, but the layout of your document that is messed up. If it is the layout, then attaching the Adobe PDF printer during the editing of your document should solve that issue. You should also consider using the Press or Print job settings to embed all fonts.

  • IMovie shared function could not work

Hi, I am using the latest version of imovie but I cannot upload to youtube. The Share button is not grayed out. The icons just wouldn't come out. Any idea why?

    Hi Barry,
    iMovie11, SnowLeopard 10.6.7.
    Different problem in the trailer:
The main title shows "placeholders" as if the font is missing which it is likely not; I have not messed with fonts in a year.
The placeholders resemble a box with the capital letter "A" within the box bordered by the phrase "BASIC LATIN" on top and bottom of the box and "0000" on the left and "00F7" on the right.
To attempt to repair the malfunction, I eliminated the .plist file but this rids iMovie11 of the projects themselves, so this is no solution.
I quit iMovie and restarted it but the problem persists.
The previous trailer had no font problems, nor problems of any kind. My previous movies made in iMovie11 had no problems either.
    What to do?

  • Cannot find import movies in imovie in hard drive

    good day
I import files (video) in imovie but i couldn't find it in my hard drive?
    many thanks
    oohhhhh

In iMovie 10 (if this is what you are using) the video clip files are in the library.  Right-click on the library and select "show package contents" and you will see  folders for each of your events.  Within these will be folders labelled "Original media"  In these are your clips.  However, don't change anything in the library with the Finder or imovie will malfunction.

  • QuickTime video won't export to iMovie

I've been working on an iMovie project which is a series of screen capture recordings from QuickTime; the first two imported from my desktop perfectly fine and are now ready to edit in a new project, but suddenly I try to add a third and it simply won't appear. I go to File>Import>Movies and select the movie from my desktop, same as the previous two, and as usual the progress bar appears. It's a fairly long recording, so the exporting process claims to take an hour or two...the problem is, once the progress bar vanishes, nothing has uploaded/exported...the event/import library remains empty. I have tried this 3 times now, the same results each time (I've turned off auto shut down/energy saver temporarily to make sure nothing's interrupted).
I tried exporting the video to iMovie directly from QuickTime (File>Export To>iMovie). A progress bar appears but gets stuck in its initial loading window and never actually starts exporting...what could the problem be?? It may be worth noting my computer is beginning to "run low" on space, but I've received no notifications telling me my disk is completely full or anything like that. Would space restrictions cause these random malfunctions of import/exports...? Anything would help!! Thank you!

    Hi

    • New tape and record
    • In iMovie just press Play
    I do this more often.
Deleting iMovie Pref file moght help
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk 25Gb or more ?
    General answer:
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

    Hey.
Since you seem to have tried mostly everything, apart from exchanging the motherboard, I'd say you have at least one option left, and that's to reinstall Windows from the recovery partition / recovery discs. That might solve the problem, if this is due to a software-error. General updates etc. might not work to fix such problems, but a clean install should.
If that doesn't help, I'd say the problem is somewhere either with the CPU or the motherboard, maybe bad connections or some sort of malfunction that prevents the computer from coming out of the 100% CPU usage.

  • Imovie HD acting weird; won't show finished movie in the big screen

My Imovie HD has started acting totally weird. First off, it wouldn't show finished movie projects in the large viewing screen. Then there were clips that no longer showed up. Sometimes I can hear the sound of a clip, but not see it. I tried compressing a project in quicktime to publish it on the Web and I got an error. Then the imovie started acting weird. Now when I open it, it just closes on its own.
I've run disk utility and no problems were found. I also tried Tech Tool. And I couldn't find the plist file for imovie at all to delete it. I've also emptied the cache files. HELP!

There is probably an app. malfunction. You should have a certified Apple salesman look at it. Other than that, i am not sure what to do.

  • IMovie "opens" and nothing shows up

    Hello everyone,
For some reason, my iMovie has suddenly decided to malfunction after just wroking perfectly fine a week prior.
Whenever I start up iMovie 08, it starts up VERY fast, barely bounces in the dock for long, and it shows up normally on the Menu Bar up top. But the actual program itself doesn't show up. Everything is grayed out under "File" except "Import from Camera", and clicking that does nothing.about 80% of everything in the menu bar for iMovie is grayed out.
I've run disk utility to verify disk and disk permissions mulitiple times over the past few weeks, and its still the same.
(And I must note this is one of many glitches im dealing with since I've had leopard in the past 2 months.)

  • TS2289 Audio won't import with video in iMovie 11

My iMovie 11 (9.0.4) is all of the sudden malfunctioning - it's not importing the audio with the video.  I've even tried importing clips that just a few days ago imported perfectly with the audio... but now the audio isn't importing.  So I know it's not a problem with the video file.  And I know that I have the volume up in iMovie... the intro w/ music that I have in iMovie is playing the audio perfectly.  The problem is with importing a video file (mp4).  I've literally imported hundreds of video clips into iMovie, and have never had this problem. My Mac is 10.6.8.  Any suggestions?

    I'm using imovie 9.0.9 with OSX 10.7.5
I also went through days of troubleshooting why some clips have sound and some don't.  All quicktime files have sound when played from quicktime.  But no sound when imported into imovie.
None of the Apple or User suggestions worked.  But I finally found a solution.  I'm working on a project with over 100 clips.  Everything was fine until I tried to import around 20 clips at the same time.  Some had sound some didn't.  Also, when done with each section, I exported the movies and deleted the thumbnails from the imovie clips window to clean up and organize the session. When re importing clips which previously had sound, the sound was gone but the image would play.
What I found was that any file which had been deleted from the clips window, was now in the Rejected Clips window.  Re importing the file would only show image but no sound.  Once I Move Rejected Clips to Trash, emptied the finder trash, and re imported the files, all files played with sound.
Back up original files on hard drive
    In imovie
    Select View Rejected Clips
Select Move Rejected Clips to Trash
    Empty Trash in Finder
    Re Import Files
