IMovie missing from Snow Leopard

How do you reinstall iMovie in MAC OS X 10..8 Snow Leopard? I accidently inserted an iLife 06 disk. Since then, only have iLife 06 vice iLife 08. Can't find it on Snow Leopard download disk.

iMovie isn't a part of Snow Leopard (10.6 not 10.8) or any other OS X version and shipped on the iLife DVD.
Versions were '06, '08, '09 and '11. It is now only sold via the App Store.

  • Yosemite Disk missing from Snow Leopard  Startup Disk

I recently installed Yosemite in a triple-boot configuration with Snow Leopard and Windows 7.
Note: to anyone trying the same  I learned the hard way that the Yosemite has to go after Windows or Windows' 4-partiton limit will be exceeded and it won't install. My partitions look like this: (Invisible) EFI, Snow Leopard, Windows 7, Yosemite, Recovery.
But the topic of this post is the fact that the Yosemite Disk does not appear in Snow Leopard's Startup Disk in System Preferences. I've seen a few other posts about this and want to share a work-around I've found. Here's the procedure:
    1) Boot into Yosemite.
    Open System Preferences>Startup Disk.
If the Yosemite startup disk is not already selected, select it and reboot.
    2) In terminal, enter these commands:
         nvram efi-boot-device > ~/desktop/YosEFI
         nvram efi-boot-device-data >> ~/desktop/YosEFI
The YosEFI name is arbitrary; call it whatever you like.
The > and the following code on the first command creates a file named YosEFI on the desktop and sends the output of the first nvram command to it.
The >> on the second command appends its output to the existing YosEFI file. A single > here would overlay the output of the first command.
    3) Open System Preferences>Startup Disk.
Select the Snow Leopard disk and reboot.
    4) Copy the YosEFI file from the Yosemite desktop to a folder of your choice.
    5) Create a file in Text Editor (I called mine BootYosemite - with no .txt extension), and put (a version of) this code in it:
         sudo nvram -f ~/Documents/YosEFI
For simplicity this example assumes the YosEFI file was saved to your Documents folder. Adjust the path as appropriate.
    6) Open Terminal, navigate to the file created in Step 5 (BootYosemite), and make the file executable:
         chmod 755 BootYosemite
    7) You can now double-click the BootYosemite file and it will open a Terminal window and prompt for an Administrator password. When the command runs, it imports the efi parameters from the YosEFI file to NVRAM and the next system restart will boot into Yosemite without the need to use the Option key.
Of course, it's debatable whether being required to enter an Administrator password is really any easier than holding down the Option key, but for those who want a work-around for the missing Yosemite in Snow Leopard's System Preferences>Startup Disk, this is one solution.
    8) If you really want to get creative, you can put BootYosemite in your ~/Library/Scripts folder (create the folder if you don't already have it) and run it from the Menu Bar.
To add a Scripts option to the menu bar, open AppleScript Editor (It's in Applications/Utilities), open Preferences, and check Show Script Menu in Menu Bar. You'll need to re-logon (not reboot) to pick up the new script and show it on the Menu Bar.

Simpler is to use the donationware QuickBoot app.

I had a miss download right now in my tool bar there is a OS X Mavericks Icon that says-Waiting... this has been there for 4 hours   when I click on it, cancel donwload? or (pause grayed out) or the options. I have tried this 6 times.  I used the app in the Mac App Store.  thanks  KJG43

The installer is over 5Gb's and could take many hours to download.

I updated my MPP (mid-2010) from Snow Leopard to Yosemite some weeks back. It is painfully slow since, particularly when Mail is open. I attach the etrecheck output below, but would really appreciate any help in recovering what was not-so-long-ago a very useful machine.

Your Mac has been considerably altered from its factory configuration. Given certain modifications, some of which are described below, it is not reasonable to expect it to operate properly.
    1. Back up your Mac. Your report indicates the last backup was performed a month ago. No more backups can be created because the backup volume's capacity is insufficient.
    2. Uninstall any McAfee products. Your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed.
One or both of these removal instructions may be applicable.
How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac
How to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Agent 4.x on Macintosh computers
    3. Your Mac has been affected by MacPaw "CleanMyMac". Uninstall it, but beware its uninstallation instructions are not completely effective. Depending on exactly what you used it to do, a complete erasure and reconfiguration may be required.
    4. Update OS X. Open the App Store and install all Apple recommended updates.
    5. If you require a VPN I recommend OS X's native VPN, not Cisco's flawed implementation of it.
    6. If you elect to use Adobe Flash Player you must keep it maintained. The version installed is outdated.
    7. If you elect to use Google's products you must accept the detrimental effects they will have on a Mac's performance.
    8. Adware is installed and will interfere with Internet browsing. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended solution read How to install adware.

  • The Jump from Snow Leopard to free Mavericks OS broke my iPhoto..

I updated my macbook pro today. I jumped straight from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. It was just like installing a really big app from the app store. However, it left iPhoto in the weeds of incompatibility. It was the latest version supported by Snow leopard and compatibilty instructions from Apple said I my computer met the requirements for the updated OS. Now my iPhoto has a big white circle with a line through it indicating that this version of iPhoto is not supported on the new OS. I cannot even view my pictures folder since it is in this broken iPhoto folder. Talked to Apple iPhoto specialist and he was super cool and checked with superviser but came to the conclusion that there is no conclusion at this moment. Day 1 downloaders should always consider this risk. I was just excited after seeing todays keynote and went for it on the macbook pro. This is what we both concluded..
The suite of apps in iLife and iWork were usually purchased via physical disk or preinstalled when purchasing a Mac a couple years ago. So there is no update for these in the app store (the new way of obtaining and updating software). This was a bit of an oversight in todays launch of new products. I was instructed to wait a few days and see if there is a "patch" for this error of compatibility. I can be patient and wait for this, but if there is no patch... Then I am in a great deal of trouble with my Wife! Lol seriously, she had a bunch of our wedding, honeymoon, and newborn daughter pics on this laptop and I foolishly updated without backing up. To my credit, I did my homework and learned that it "should" leave all my content as is. It is like the IOS updates that just overlay the software and replace only os stuff. This was true. Everything is exactly where it was before, only I cannot access the pictures, open iPhoto, update iMovie (it prompts that there is an update, but takes you to the app store updates page and it is not there). Basically at this point, I have to re-buy iLife and iWork because my versions are too old for the operating system released today. This would be fine if I was informed that my paid apps would need to be re-bought, but Apple stated that my device was compatible and this would be a simple update much like any other app. I also have extended apple care protection for our products, but the apple support guy said that store support will not have a fix at this time either. I suggested to take note of this particular issue because anyone who jumps from Snow Leopard to Mavericks may likely face this issue. I suggested that they offer a patch for the mistake or offer a free iphoto download (or other native app that broke in the process).
Other than my iLife and iWork apps not making a clean jump to the new OS, I really like the features and fluidity of the system. Apple makes high-quality products and innovates. I am not upset at all. Just a bit frightened because if I lost these photos and videos, you are reading a dead mans words.
Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.

The same thing happened to me, since I have iPhoto 9.2.3
There is some kind of "direct access" to your original photos:
    /Users/[your user name here]/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters
All pictures should be saved there, organized by year...
iPhoto will still not work but at least you can recover your photos.

  • Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Yosemite

    Hello,
Long-time user of the forums, first-time poster (such a fantastic wealth of knowledge here!).
One question prior to installing Yosemite:
Does anyone have any experience installing from Snow Leopard to Yosemite - ideally with a Macbook Pro 15-inch mid 2009?
The second question is more closely related to what I do after I make the install, which I plan to do to a test partition first:
If I install to a partioned drive, will I still have the option to install onto my original drive (and then I would delete the test partion - I presume this is the best way to do it) if I like Yosemite and wish to go ahead with it? Will I just be able to use my Mac log in again?
If I don't like Yosemite, or it is incompatible with my mac, will I be able to easily remove the newly partioned test-drive, with Yosemite on it?
Lastly, Will I need to reinstall Microsoft Word for Mac 2011? As I don't have the boot disks I just wanted to check this.
I plan to run the usual diagnostic precautions (Time Machine Back-up, Verify/repair Disc permissions, make sure all software up to date) Many thanks all,
    Much appreciated.
    Below are my specs:
    Macbook Pro 15-inch mid 2009
    HDD: 250 GB
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 8 GB (I upgraded to this about 18 months ago)
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

    Hi Kahjot,
Wow - fantastic this is so useful! So I would partition the external HDD first? And then clone my current OS to both of those partitions? And I would need to run the whole of the OS off my external drive - I would need to keep it in at all times...?
If possible can you please describe the process of cloning it back on to my internal drive - will this remove all my existing apps etc that I have modified over the course of the month?
    Many thanks again,
    Hugo
You would really only have to keep the external attached when you want to fool around with the clone that you updated to Yosemite. You could either run off the external for Snow Leopard, or from your internal drive. I'd pick one and stick with it. Let's say it's the Snow Leopard internal drive. You would clone it to your external Snow Leopard partition from time to time to keep that clone up to date. If you decide that you really want Yosemite on your internal drive (you may not!), you could make a final clone of your internal drive to the Snow Leopard partition, to make sure that you still have it and can go back to it when you need to, and then you would clone the Yosemite drive onto your internal. That would, of course, completely erase what is on your internal drive and replace it with the Yosemite system. Or you could just run the Yosemite installer (that you wisely saved) to update your internal drive that way.
I am thinking in terms of cloning with software such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner: I've never used Time machine. I can't advise you on how reliable Time Machine is, or how easy it is to restore a system with it. You might do some research here on that. SOme users have reported missing files in their Time Machine backups: http://www.macintouch.com/
One "gotcha" with Carbon Copy Cloner, which I prefer because it clones the recovery partition, is that you will need version 4 to clone Yosemite onto anything, and an earlier version (3.5.7) to use within Snow Leopard.
When you download the Yosemite Install app, it will launch itself. Don't run it immediately. Quit the Install app, and option-drag a copy of the installer to a safe location (not in your Applications Folder!). The Apple OS installers starting with Lion have the annoying habit of deleting themselves from the Applications folder after the installation is finished, so if you allow that to happen and need to install it again, you have to download it from the App Store again.
One snag is that Yosemite volumes are not seen by Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref, so you will have to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite by rebooting with the option key held down.

  • Can I upgrade my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard straight to Mountain Lion, or would it be wise to get Lion as well?

I am currently in the process of upgrading the operating system on my girlfriend's MacBook Pro (Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1). I have purchased and installed Snow Leopard successfully, however I would like to upgrade to the latest operating system, which to date is Moutain Lion.
Am I able to do this?
Is it wise to perform such an upgrade on this model of MacBook Pro (can it handle it)?
I have heard that I can upgrade straight from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this? Will I lose anything at all by not installing Lion before Mountain Lion?
Thanks for the help everyone. Hopefully I can get these questions answered soon.

And the only way to figure that out would be verifying my disk using the Disk Utility?
Thank you for that. If I am not missing out on anything by skipping Lion then that will be my option. A few extra dollars in my pocket is always a good thing.

  • Upgrading from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) to Mountain Lion

So I purchased Mountain Lion online and received the redeem code from Apple. I've redeemed the download for Mountain Lion but have been having issues trying to even initiate the download. I've gone into system preferences and turned off the computer's sleep mode to prevent the computer from going to sleep during the download. When I click download, the App Store seems to load for a second and then it just goes back to saying download (as if I never pressed the button, or at least that's what it looks like). I have gotten it to start downloading once (as indicated by the icon that appeared in my dock), but about mid-way through it failed and said I had to retry.
I'm upgrading from Snow Leopard (v10.6.8) so I don't have launchpad. I'm also limited in my ability to get fast internet (I have to go to a coffee shop to get decent internet where I live). So I guess a couple questions:
    1. Is there a minimum internet speed requirement for downloading Mountain Lion? (If not, I'm willing to wait at the coffee shop even if it takes a while)
    2. If it isn't necessarily an internet speed issue, could it possibly be downloading somewhere where I can't see it download? (although I this seems unlikely as I have had the download appear in my dock on at least one occassion)
    3. Is there anything else on my end that might be causing issues with the download that anyone can think of? (I've called apple a couple of times already so I just wanna make sure there isn't anything glaring that I might be missing before I try to call them again)
If there is any other info that might help diagnose the situation, let me know and I'll try to describe what's happening on my end
    Thanks!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I have (1.5 MBps down and up). The connection isn't consistent though (it drops and reconnects on an inconsistent basis). I guess the problem I'm having is getting the download to even initiate, which has, to my knowledge, only happened once (this morning). I go back to school on Wednesday where I have a 10 MBps down and up connection. Trying to get this done as soon as possible with school starting up again next week to try and make sure everything is up and running smoothly.

  • HT2476 How do I upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 to lion 10.7?

I get an error message when tryin gto access the mac app store from my apple menu and any browser. I want to upgrade to iMovie '11 from '09. I also want to upgrade from snow leopard to lion.

Depends upon your machine if it can handle Lion or not.
Did you read the minimal specs? 2GB of RAM and a Intel Core 2 Duo (not Intel Core Duo) it really needs 4GB of RAM.
I don't advise any machine that came with 10.5 originally to upgrade to Lion, it's just too much for that older hardware and 10.8 is coming out very soon and that will not run on a lot of older machines so your behind again and having to buy all new software.
As you should know, your investment in PPC based software and hardware drivers for third party machines is not going to work in 10.7.

Perhaps you might want to wait for a new 10.8 or 10.9 machine.
If your sure about Lion, I highly advise making a bootable clone on a blank external drive first, makes it a cinch to come back to Snow.
Or at least disconnect your TimeMachine drive so it stays on 10.6, then you can erase from the disk and restore from TM.

Either that you will have to do it the "hard way"

Try MAS again later, or get a faster Internet connection.

  • I just updated my 15" macbook pro from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and it's saying Photo booth needs to be updated to be used. Since it comes with the machine I'm assuming I need to buy Mountain Lion or something? Help??

Many apps I would like to download were out of reach because they needed the latest software download to work. I was extrememly excited to hear that the newest update was completely free and knew that it would help some of my problems. I was told that Mavericks could be installed straight from Snow Leopard, but I'm guessing a few updates have been missed on the way? How am I supposed to update my apps like Photo Booth when I am a student with low income and can't afford to buy things like Mountain Lion?
Is there anyway to update my apps without downsizing my software???

First, I see from the screenshot that you have applications on your desktop - how did they wind up there? Any app should be installed in the Applications folder since that is where Software Update expects them to be when it searches for updates. So you might want to move your apps there. Do that, restart, and run Software Update again. If that does not update your very old version of Photo Booth, then I have only one suggestion: use recovery (hold down Command + R keys while restarting or rebooting) to re-download and install Mavericks again over the top of what you have.

  • IMovie is bringing Snow Leopard to its knees

Well, so far it seems that Snow Leopard is snappy as long as it's not being used much. Once you start using some heavy applications - you'll get more beachball than you've ever seen.
I've tried to import a movie from my HD camcorder today. The movie is about 10 minutes long. It took about 10 minutes to import it into the latest iMovie, but while importing it, Snow Leopard became basically impossible to use: Safari would freeze up and beachball all the time, flash movies in it wouldn't play at all (or would play like a frame every 5-10 seconds), switching between applications takes half-a-minute.
So I launched Activity Monitor (which alone took about a minute). iMovie was taking the most memory - about 245 megabytes. At the same time Memory tab would show that there are over 2 gigabytes of "Active" memory (meaning being actively used). When I summed up all used memory from Activity monitor - I got just under 1G. But Activity Monitor is showing that there's also about 1 gigabyte _in swap_ already! And that's on a 4 gigabyte MacBook Pro, with nothing running except for Safari, Mail and iMovie! Where's all the memory gone?
And that's not just while importing the movie, but also when trying to do anything with it. After awhile iMovie simply freezes completely, so that I have to basically Force-Quit it.
So far it seems like there's either some severe memory leakage going on, or Snow Leopard dedicates ALL available memory to a disk cache, giving the cache the highest priority, while reducing the amount of memory available to applications.
Besides that, there always seems to be the "mds" process always doing something - even when there's no other activity in the system. It always takes about 10-20% of CPU time, and almost always working with the hard drive.
P.S. I've force-quit iMovie about 2 minutes ago, and the icon in Dock was not showing it as a "running" application for about as long, and only now I've got a message from Snow Leopard that iMovie stopped responding... 8-O It's not been running for almost 2 minutes now, why do I get this message now, 2 minutes after it's been killed???

but now it is going like a fair and is a really good improvement from 06.
iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination and my DVD's look perfect!
iMovie 09 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble videos to share on the Internet.

  • IMovie 11 and Snow Leopard

Having horrendous problems with iMovie 11 on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) -- very slow indeed, and nothing works as it should.  Does it work properly with Snow Leopard?  Or is it just meant for Lion?  I have an iMac OSX intel version.
I tried to reinstall iMovie 09 from the install disk -- but it refuses to install -- what to do?
    Thanks all.

It should work fine. If reinstalling iMovie does not work, you may need to reinstall OSX.
