IMovie movie won't preview correctly in iDVD

I made an iMovie project, it's under 120 minutes, I then shared and sent my movie to iDVD, a new iDVD project opened up with my movie in it. I went in the STATUS option and it said 3.9 of 4.0 GB used. The movie is shown in the same STATUS tab, underneath Background Encoding, and underneath "asset" it shows the project, "Alaska.mov" and the status bar is empty. When I hit preview, and then play the movie, the audio sounds like an airplane or something, but the visual is there, just slowed down. Why is this happening? How will I get my movie to be played in iDVD, then eventually burned?

Check your camcorder to see if you've got 16 bit or 12 bit audio as your starting point.
Go back to your iMovie project select everything in the timeline and use the command "extract audio." Then save. Then re-open iDVD. It should ask if you want to update the project since you've changed your movie. Choose yes.
See if this helps.

    Hi,
I just imported a new video from my camera, and it won't preview it in the viewer. the thumbnails will "play", but noting in the viewer. I just tried opening an older project, and they work fine.
Is there a way to force imovie to rebuild the previews of selected clips?
    Thanks,

  • IMovie crashes, doesn't preview correctly. I want to move file!

Please help me. I just bought the brand new mackbook pro 15" july 2011. I took to apple store, they don't know what to do. Im so dissapointed. Now i am just trying to move the project to an external so I can attempt to burn the movie on a mac that has 8gb memory. You see, for some reason the project file eats up all my memory when it's opened. So imovie cant burn it, share, or anything. PLease if anyone knows what is going on or how to trouble shoot. Please let me know. The movie is 25 minutes, files are gopro video files, iphone 4 files, mini dv, and imported imovie hd files. Tons of edits, and 6 songs or so. PLease, I do not want to start over. Like I said, so dissapointing. I dont want it to cloud my opinion of apple, but **** this *****. I had an imac from 2006 until now, made great movies on imovie hd, got this one for my biggest yet, and bam! right away it just fell apart.

    Hi
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • Movie won't save correctly??

The past two weeks, either my imovie 09 or my macbook pro has not been able to correctly save my movies. When i edit the movies, it is perfectly fine. When I export the movies (to desktop, flashdrive, youtube, etc.) and play them back... about half way through the movie, the audio is about 10 sec. before the movie. So, everything is off! It seems to "lag". I do a news show for a class and this is not acceptable. I need to fix my imovie or at least know what the problem is so someone else can fix it?? Like I said, it has only been doing this for about two weeks. It's extremely irritating and I'm about to just take my mac to a store. Advice? Ideas of what is going on? Same problem? Let me know, please!

yeah, that could be the reason! i use tons of speed changes and audio voiceovers. and when i use the speed changes, i set them not using the pre-set speeds. is there any way possible that it can still play right using the speeds that i want and not the pre-set speeds? because it looks perfect! lol. i will change the speeds and see if it works, though.

  • Quicktime Dance movies won't load correctly - here is a link - please help

    Hello,
Finally got the project to this point . . .
I could not figure out the html ActiveXcoding Apple recommended in for our QT movies, so I hired a guy to code it for me - but the movies will not play (for me)
correctly . . . . he says they play fine on his end.
First - it Automatically starts playing - and I don't want it to - he says he doesn't know how to stop it. Could someone please explain how to stop it from Autoplaying?
The movie loads and plays with HORRIBLE flickering, and when it's done playing - it makes the page RE-LOAD with just the movie, no navigation, no nothing.
I've only loaded the "real-time", and "Slow-Motion" videos on numbers 11, and 16.
Here is a link to the Index page - click on the "Play" links for Real time and
slow motion, and can go "next" to advance to next move number 16:
    http://videodance.com/freevideos/freedance_moves/011/sidx011.html
(this index page doesn't have the Flash engine ready yet - that's the black
    square on the page)
You will notice that on both of the .html pages (for real-time and slow-motion)
that one of the files it points to is called "AC_RunActiveContent2.js" - this
2 was added at the end because I didn't want it to conflict with the Flash developers "AC_RunActiveContent.js" page he uses (in case there were differences in coding)
I've spent HOURS & HOURS trying to figure it out . . . I admit to not being as smart as you all, that's why I hired him . . . now what can I do?
Please, if you will and have the chance - check out the pages and movies - and see if you have any suggestions on why it is messing up bad.
(I'm using a Macintosh = firefox 2.0.16, and Safari 3.0.4) He is on windows (both firefox and Safari - says they play fine)
How do the deliver for you . . . anyone with Windows please check them out if
    you will.
Really appreciate any help or direction you may offer!
    Kind regards,

Sloppy html coding in the page:
<embed src="011s.mov" width="640" height="496"> is the only thing that points to your file and it is very out of date.
Basic issues is that it will not even work with Internet Explorer because it give no instructions for the QuickTime browser plug-in.
http://developer.apple.com/internet/ieembedprep.html for proper code that works with every Web browser. autoplay="false" would require the page visitor to click the "play" button. Removing the "href" link to the source file would stop a click from loading the file in its own window.

  • Movies won't play correctly

Movies I import in via MP4 format, or movies I try to preview from the shop, the audio works fine, but the video is mainy black and has random flashes of color, but gets no where close to playing the whole video, I've re-installed, deleted my library, tried it all, what else could I possibly do thanks.

    hi there!

  • IDVD autoplay movie won't play in DVD player

My IDVD movie won't play in a DVD player when created in autoplay mode. It plays fine on my computer both in preview and on my computer's DVD player program and it works fine if I create a menu and button, just not if I create it in autoplay mode. I've tried it on my work compter and three DVD players and it won't play in any of them. Can anyone help, please?

    Hi Sue
    Thanks for responding.
I used a 16x Maxwell DVD-R. The same kind of disc worked fine with the movie when I had a menu.
    I'm afraid I don't know what a Patchburn is.

    Hi JosefK:
    Welcome to discussions.
Did you use a Data DVD by chance?
It needs to be a DVD-R with iMovie 4.
Are you using an external with Patchburn?

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

  • I have a an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes. All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem.

I have an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes.
All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem. The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it  just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
    Can anyone please help me.

    The mystery remains....
Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.
    Thanks

  • IMOVIE 6 won't recognize DV camera while IDVD is encoding or burning

I am in the process of encoding and burning a dvd in idvd 6. Given the length of this process, I want to also import some video into an imovie 6 project. However, while idvd is encoding, imovie won't recognize my camera.
I understand I can stop idvd, but then will I lose the encoding that has already occurred?
Will imove recognize the camera if I launch idvd after beginning the import into imovie?
Is there a software fix that will prevent idvd from monopolizing the firewire port when it is just encoding video from an imovie project?
This is a very irritating conflict given the time encoding takes in idvd.
    Thanks,

As Sue suggests, it's not surprising that iDVD doesn't want you to access the camera with iMovie. It's not unusual for applications that perform FireWire-intensive functions—as both iDVD and iMovie do—to want to control the device. If iDVD can't control the camera, it may not be able to perform a task you want it to do. (Remember, iDVD offers several camcorder-dependent functions, including OneStep DVDs.)
While it may be a bit treacherous, you CAN go behind iDVD's back to get it done. The trick is to grab control of the camera before iDVD does. So Quit iDVD after you create, then save the iDVD project, then grab control of the camera with an iMovie HD project, THEN re-open the iDVD project and start encoding. (I tested exporting the iDVD project to a disk image, which is probably safer than burning a physical DVD. Use Disk Utility later to burn the disk image to a physical DVD.)
The iMovie video looked fine here, but your mileage may vary.

  • IMovie'11 won't import mp4 movies

I have some large mp4 files that I'm trying to import into iMovie so I can edit them into shorter clips.
When I select "open with", iMovie is greyed out.
I can open the movie with QuickTime, and select export to iMovie, and the file appears in the iMovie dropbox on my computer, but iMovie still won't open it, or even recognise that the movie is there.
When I try "import" in iMovie and select the file, it takes about 10 hours importing, and then nothing happens, no error message, nothing, I just see iMovie open, and unchanged.
I am using iMovie'11 version 9.0.7 amd Mac OSx 10.8

What is it doing on the desktop?
You burn the DVD selecting Burn in iDVD.
    iDVD tutorials:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/idvd.html
Of course this assumes that you actually have iDVD, as it is no longer included in new Macs running Lion:
