IMovie muddies perfectly crisp pngs

Hi,
Admittedly spiral-eyed now, I have read everything that I can google, etc, re: iMovie lowering image quality, but can't find anything specific to this problem:
I am creating a 47-second movie for iOS applications. I have an iMovie 9.0.4 project that includes perfectly crisp 480x320 pngs saved from an image created in Photoshop -- 8 pngs displayed sequentially w/cross dissolves between to illustrate the 47-second aiff.
Does anyone know why iMovie would turn perfectly crisp 480x320 pngs into muddy video images? And, more importantly, how this can be fixed? Numerous blogs mention poor quality stills being, but I've found no viable solutions.
After a series of exports to .mov and .m4v, the best visual is a .mov with movie inspector settings:
H.264, 480x320, Millions Linear PCM, 24 fps, data rate 1726.03
I've done Flash apps with clean app visuals from similar source images/media. New to iOS and iMovie, not sure where the 'mud' is coming from. Seems like it should be pretty simple (ha). Any help that you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Imovie quitting due to PNG file

Everytime I add a png to imove the program quits.  It also quits while exporting video when I have png files in the movie.  Anyone know how to fix this issue?

If you are adding the Png directly to the timeline, try adding it as a Cutaway or a Picture in Picture instead.
Also, it works best if you set the png to the dimensions of your project, e.g. 1920x1080. If iMovie has to resize the png, it will convert to JPEG and you lose the transparency.

  • Importing live type to imovie

I am a newcommer to video editing and have gradually learnt how to use imovie. I have FCEHD but don't know how to use it yet. I was impressed with live type and made a short title sequence however when I render the sequence and import it into imovie the titles appear pixilated and low quality. I have tried importing it as a .mov and .dv and played around with project properties in live type. Can anyone help me

I have exported the movie both to iDVD and a DV video camera which I have played onto a tv but the titles still look pixilated when imported but perfectly crisp if I play the .mov file from livetype. Am I using the wrong project settings?? I have tried different ones but no good. I really want to use the live type titles but they don't look good in my movie. HELP!

  • IMovie fails to start on specific user

Hi! I'm about to throw my Macbook against the wall because of this problem. I've wasted enormous amounts of time trying to fix this. The case is that iMovie won't even open in my user account. The Apple Store genius is not an option because, as you see, I live in Costa Rica (where it seems that very few people deal with Macs).
    1. Already tried reinstalling it.
    2. All updates are applied.
    3. All of the other iLife apps open.
    4. Tried deleting preferences.
    5. Reinstalling OS X is not an option right now because of my work, and because this is my only computer.
And... 6. It only happens on MY account. If I create a new user account, iMovie works perfectly. This means (I think) that the problem is inside my Library folder, but this folder is JUST TOO big to explore and try to find the problem.
Has this happened to you? I'm dealing with iMovie '09 BTW.
It's really getting on my nerves, to the point where I'm starting to remember the good old days of Windows and the Registry.
I really appreciate if somebody can help me, as I need this fixed for my work (I know, I know, what am I doing with iMovie instead of FCP? Light, cheap, video editing).

  • IMovie suddenly wont do pretty much anything

iMovie worked perfectly fine for the past month. Nothing was an issue. Now, all of the sudden, I cant open previous projects, and when I create a new project I cant move any clips into the project. Also, I cant preview anything, and no sound is played. And on top of that, I cant export anything. I think this started when my mac went to sleep while iMovie was exporting, because that's when it started. Seriously, help, because this is really starting to **** me off.

Try trashing iMovie's preference file. Follow the steps in this User Tip by AppleMan1958:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4061
In Mountain Lion (and Lion), a quick way to access "your user" Library folder is to click on Go in the Finder menu bar, then press and hold down the Option key on the keyboard. The Library folder will appear in the drop down list. This is slightly different from the method described in the User Tip.

  • TS4455 Why IMovie no longer shows all movie clips from movies from Kodak camera

I am on an IMac 10.6.8   2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo with 3 gb memory
    I am using IMovie 11  (9.0.4)
My camera is a Kodak Playsport shooting hd video
On all of over 300 videos I have shot previously IMovie worked perfectly.
On the last 3 movies imported from the camera, I movie loads the preview and I can drag it into the stage but instead of opening up and showing all of the clips, it remains a single image exactly as it displays in the playlist
Nothing I click opens the frames.  Thus the only want to edit is to open the file into the fine editing frame
But this is not as easy as it was before where I could see the clip and make the edits right there on the stage.
What has changed?   What am I doing wrong?

    Hello awebstore,
It may be that the view in your Project environment has been zoomed out.

  • Imovie HD 6 NO LONGER AVALIABLE for download?

imovie HD 6 is no longer available to download, why did apple take it off, will they add it back, now where can i get it from

Certainly seems to have gone. I simply cannot understand Apple's stance on this. So many people still use it, and it has continued to be recommended to new Apple owners who find the later imovie versions unsuitable for their film-editing needs.
Yes, there is Final Cut, but for many people, the old-style imovie was perfectly adequate (despite its known bugs etc).
    Black mark, Apple!

  • How do I put a Halo on someone in Imovie

How do I put a Halo on someone in Imovie?

This is not generally possible in imovie, but if you have access to a photo editing app like Photoshop, Acorn, Pixelmator, etc., you can do this.
First I would make a still image of the frame where you would like to place the halo. See this post if you don't know how. Save it as a PNG.
In Photoshop, bring in you PNG into one layer. Create another layer with a halo. Save this out as a PNG file.
In iMovie, drag in the PNG file and drop it on the frame where you need it. Choose CUTAWAY, and in the clip inspector, set the opacity slider to transparent.
Karsten Schlüter has some good info on his website here.
You could do a halo that moved and followed the person in FCP X and Motion 5, but that is a big learning curve.

  • Best format for iMovie input: DV or AppleIntermetiateCodec

I thought (and I think I read here several times) that the best input for iMovie, if you use a MiniDV camcorder, was to import the DV files into the app.
Now I have read an article ( http://imovietricks.blogspot.com/ )where it is said that iMovie does not properly work with those files and that a previous conversion to AppleIntermediateCodec should be give better quality.
Can someone give more information about this subject?
I think is a very interesting subject not only for the quality but because AppleIntermediateCodec files are half the size as DV files which make them more easily stored.

I have only DV camera and this issue is very important to me. I have read probably all the threads about it and have seen no solution. I even bought an e-book from a guy who said here that he knows the solution (but didn't of course open the secret here in forum) and guess what he recommended in his book? To convert the files to AIC.
As there have been so many discussions about it then I wouldn't say that iMovie works perfectly well with DV. Even Macworld mentioned this in their review of iMovie '08:
+"...The bad news is that in order to get this real time performance without renders or progress bars, there is some sacrifice in quality. For interlaced video such as DV and 1080i HDV, iMovie now uses single-field processing. This means every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage..."+
    http://www.macworld.com/article/59668/2006/12/imovie08.html
Sorry, but I have difficulties believing anyone who claims that iMovie '08 handles DV fine. If all these reports were wrong and iMovie really could give full quality from DV then Apple would have refuted such reports (especially ones by popular magazines like Macworld) and given some guidelines.

  • IMovie 11 keeps crashing on login!!!! HELP!!

    Hi!
Today I bought iMovie 11, and it installed successfully. All the other iLife 11 programs work fine. When I click iMovie from the Application's folder or the Dock, it loads up, bounces for 5 minutes, then stops. I right click on it to quit it, and it tells me if I want to Force Quit it. I created a new account on my Mac, and iMovie works perfectly fine. I want to have iMovie working on my main account. This happened to me with iMovie 09, and I thought if I bought the latest version (iLife 11), then it should get fixed.
    Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@iphonejunky : Perian was installed by a pref.pane I needed to watch trailer in HD with Front Row on my MacBook.
The installation was automated so I didn't check the version on Perian after installing the pref.pane.
Anyway, i don't use Front Row anymore to watch trailer because I recently bought a Apple TV 2.
FYI, Here is a link to the pref.pane in question

@amazingmiki : you're very welcome, always a pleasure to help a guy from the state of House M.D
Another important information : Perian was in "my account/library" because I choose the "only for me" installation but maybe it could be a good idea to check in "/macintosh hd/library/quicktime" in case of "all users on this computer" installation

  • IMovie fails to start

    Hello,
I bought a new Mac Book Air OS X 10.9.4 last week and worked smoothly with iMovie until yesterday when it failed to open. I can see the iMovie Menu Bar on the top of my screen but the program itself won't open.
looking for solutions on different forums, i have already tried the following:
iMovie works perfect when install and log in under a guest account
I removed the imovie plist-file from my preferences folder in my user library, but it still did not open
To my knowledge, the only difference since the last time I successfully opened iMovie, is that i copied some .mov files on my Mac Book Air which I imported from through my iMac
    thanks for all the suggestions/support
    regards

  • My itunes music won't transfer from iMovie to quicktime

I really need help. My iMovie works perfectly but I need help uploading my video to quicktime. I can do that but as it is compressing it says my iTunes music is not authorized. It asks to authorize it and i do about 4 times and it finishes. Then i access it on quicktime none of the music works. I've been trying to compress the video in different ways and it still says my iTunes music does not work. Please help me figure out my problem.

I am also having difficulty with this same thing. It says that my iTunes music is not authorized no matter if I use my own imported CDs in the project or songs I have purchased from the iTunes store. I have to keep getting the same songs "authorized" throughout the time I am working on my project. Sorry to say, I have not figured out an answer as of yet. GOOD LUCK! To the Genius Bar tomorrow!!!

  • Widescreen imovie events in frontrow are squeezed into 4:3 aspect

I shoot all my personal video using a JVC everio widescreen camcorder. iMovie works perfectly with the camera and imports all my clips just fine. When I try to view them through frontrow the clips are squeezed into letterbox format. i.e black bars on the side and 4:3 video format. I thought that this perhaps was quicktime's fault but viewing the clips in quicktime works perfectly.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some setting that I'm missing?

I'm having the same problem with HDTV contect (widescreen), transcoded to run on my Mac. iTunes plays the video correctly, but Front Row "squishes" it, and adds pillarboxing to the sides. Kooky, huh? I'm thinking it's a bug in Front Row. Anyone notice that Leopard really has a lot of bugs??

  • How can i organise my home movie video clips in iMovie in chronological order

    Hello,
    Can anyone help please?
I have masses of home movies that were taken on VHS, transferred them onto DVDs, then loaded these and put them onto imovies.  Perfect so far!
But now stuck, as they have been imported in reverse order into the Event Library, and I'd like them to be show in chronological order with the earliest taken showing up first, so I can use them for other projects easily without a huge amount of working out what happened, when!
    Many thanks,

If you import from a digital camera or camcorder, iMovie will automatically store your events in date order.
However, if you imported clips from an analog camcorder, like VHS or 8MM or Hi8, iMovie does not have any metadata to work with.
In this case, there are two ways to add back this metadata.
The simplest way is to right click on your Event clip and select Adjust Clip Date And Time. Do this for all clips in the event.
The other way is to name your clips before importing to imovie in this format:
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext
where hh is hours in 24 hour time, and ext is the current file extension. If you name your clips this way, and then import to iMovie through FILE/IMPORT MOVIE then the clips will sort into the proper year.
Sometimes, when you import from a VHS tape ( or DVD of a VHS tape), you get one long clip for several events.
I have found I get good results by chopping up this clip into shorter clips corresponding to real world events (like birthday party, for example) so that the whole clip has the same date.
To do this I use a free app called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5.
I first will find the long clip in the Finder. From iMovie, right-click on the long clip and select Reveal in Finder)
Then drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip.
Move the playhead to the beginning of the first short clip you want to make, and click I for in point. Then move the playhead to the end of the first short clip you want to make, and press O for outpoint. (i and o do not have to be capitalized).  Then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME in Apple Intermediate Codec. Name it as I mentioned above. (clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext)
Then repeat for all additional shorter clips you need from that long clip.
