IMovie music rights and file size questions

1. I'm producing a movie of videos and still photos from a recent vacation strictly for personal family use, not commercial. Is there any violation at all of copyrights if I add songs or loops from a commercial artists music CD? Also, I'm assuming no rights problem with using in my home movie the Garage Band loops that came with my iLife'06.
2. I'm wondering about the file size of my movie so far. It is 26 minutes long and 6.5 GB! I'm guessing I'll end up with about 40 minutes. What is the compression procedure so I can later record the movie to a typical 4.9 GB DVD disc? BTW I'm using an external LaCie burner to get around problems with the 2X DVD burner in my 2002 G4 Quicksilver.

The "personal use" issue (in the U.S. anyway) was resolved in the users favor when the first VHS recorders started shipping.
There are also millions of files that are "royalty free" that be used in any fashion.
Don't worry about the file size of your iMovie project. iDVD only uses the "time" (up to 2 hours) and will handle the compression automatically.

Confused by Canon HF10, iMovie '09, AVCHD and file size

Please forgive me for these (probably) basic questions, but right now I feel like a complete idiot.
I recently purchased the Canon HF10. At first I thought it was going to be great to have an HD camcorder (a reason to buy an HDTV, too) for home movies, but evidentially this isn't going to be as nice as I thought. I don't understand the following:
I basically want to shoot video of softball games and save for family use - nothing professional here, just good/great quality home videos. Also, need to be able to stop-action and step through video for softball skill analysis.
1. When I use iMovie '09 to import my video, it is taking forever to transfer. Why?
2. If the internal memory is 16GB, why is it taking up >100GB when I transfer it to my computer? (I don't get it)
3. What does the camera frame rate setting mean by i60 Normal or PF30 or Pf24? (again, I feel really stupid)
4. Is iMovie '09 the right app or is there something else? If something else, why? Regarding stop action, this camera has the ability for you to take stills while video is recording. It's pretty interesting. Even better, iMovie lets "Add Still Frame to Project." Also if you play video from iMovie Project or Event window's, you can easily view one frame at a time by repeatedly pressing the left or right arrow.
Hard disk storage is cheap now, save up and buy a drive to archive your video. That way later on you could re export your movies to an HD compatible format since burning to DVD as your doing now is not HD.
Also, yes definitely use 60i for action video. This camera really does a great job.
The thing about 30p/24p with this camera is that the resolution is reduced: 60i=1920x180 pixels whereas 30p and 24p modes on this camera is 1440x1080.

Workflow, capturing, and file sizes question

I currently use FCE strictly for DV work, but need to upgrade to either FCE HD or FCP for use with HDV.
My workflow now consists of capturing to a scratch disk, then archiving the captured DV file to an external HD for backup purposes and storing the original tape in a safe location.
With FCE HD, can I similarly archive the captured HDV file prior to transcoding to AIC? Or, must I archive the much larger transcoded file? I would perfer to archive the smaller file, and then retranscode it if necessary to work on the project again at a later date (similarly to how I can now just copy the original captured DV file back and reopen the project).

Thanks for the info. I know that FCE HD cannot EDIT HDV natively, but since the transcoding is not done in real time during capture, I wondered if the captured HDV data was stored in a temporary file until transcoded (and if the temporary file could be archived).
Unless FCE HD can export to MPEG-2 with minimal loss, it sounds like I would need to archive the AIC file, or use FCP to edit native HDV and export.

InDesign Transparency Effects - Problems with Image Quality and File Size

Hello,
We are experiencing new problems exporting InDesign files to PDF.
To summarize, though our largest workflow is to create files for offset printing, we also deliver our work to PDF for mounting on a website so our clients can download directly from the web. Our new problem is Transparency Effects, and creating a PDF that will both have a high quality (or resolution), and be a small file size.
We are working with multiple page documents (24 to 48 pages), and would very much like to work with InDesign Transparency Effects. However, after spending much time testing a variety of PDF types, we are finding there is a radical difference between quality and file size. I was curious if anyone has had these problems, and if there is a simple answer. InDesign is an incredible program that allows us to design on the fly with Transparency Effects, but, if we are going to experience these problems, we will have to eliminate these wonderful tools.
Can you help me or lead me to information online that will help.

I know the colour graphic shading in the document that causes the issue of larger file size, but it doesn't make sense that printing 1 additional page with same information as first 2 pages would cause this.

Pixel Dimensions and File Size

Can anybody please explain the relation between pixel dimensions and file size?
Being naive, (or straight-forward if you prefer) I had assumed that pixel dimensions wide times pix dimension high = file size. Wrong!
For instance a .JPG file 374 X 500 has a file size of 41,275 bytes. But 374 times 500 = 18,700 so the two are different issues.

I see 1 pixel, and 24 bit color would make 24 bits at 8 bits to a byte, so there's the 3 bytes.
I selected a certain photo and used the APPLE i command to see if could find if it had 8 bit color or, whatever. That infomation was not on the info function, but it did say something about RGB color profile.
Is 8 bit color a near certain bet in most applications, or was that just for the sake of illustration?

which explained a lot, but its more technical depth than what I'm prepared to deal with. The net net, as far as I can tell is that image size (before compression) is dimension times color depth in its native mode, but I suppose what the native mode is and what the displayed mode is could be separate issues?
I was under the impression that the compression in JPG formt files comes out, or is decompressed, when the photo is printed or displayed? No?

Shedding light on export settings and file size

I am trying to learn about exporting images and file size. I have a combination of RAW and JPEG images in my library. For the sake of this discussion, I am going to limit this to JPEG's. I need to export my images, so that I can then upload them to an external photo processing site like Kodak.com. I was going to export versions of my images because I have made adjustments to many of them. I was going to choose the top level preset of "JPEG - original size." For the sake of example, the file that I try exporting this way has a file size (in Aperture) of 1.94 MB. After exporting it (with a DPI of 72) and a color profile of sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (I am not sure what the significance of the DPI and color profiles are either), I get an exported image with a file size of 4.6 MB. When I export the master image, I get a file size of 2.0 MB. I'm completely confused and at a loss as to what is going on here.
Can someone please shed some light on how to go about exporting images so that I can be certain that I am exporting the best quality image possible.
Also, and possibly more importantly, I export image files to sites like MobileMe Galler, Flikr and Phanfare, etc, for the purpose of archiving my images and now I am not sure if the files I am exporting are of the optimal most quality they can be. Do these settings have any bearing on the images that are being sent to my archival folders?

This confusion is because of the way Jpg files handle data. Jpg is a kind of file that compresses data to achieve a balance between image quality and file size. The jpg file that your camera saves to disk is also compressed, that's why the difference in size between a 2 MB jpg and the same image in Raw is for example 18 MB.
Jpg is a lossy compression format, every time you save a jpg some compression is applied, say after editing in Photoshop. Aperture must be reading your jpg masters to export jpg files to disk, so the difference in size should be the compression quantity applied to the newly created jpg file. I could have a 1 MB jpg file previously compressed with a quality level of 7, but if I export it at a compression quality of 10, the file could easily become a 2 MB file. The problem is quality doesn't increase with file size when the original file is a jpg.
Also some files include a preview image inside the file, increasing the final file size. The color profile embedded should't increase size by much, since most camera jpg files already include a color profile embedded (color profiles tells computers to display color consistently between applications and peripherals like printers. sRGB is widely used for images published on Internet).
As for the images you are sending to the archival folder, I would suggest you to export the masters, instead of exporting a new jpg file from an already compressed jpg master.
I know this is a complex subject so I hope I haven't confused you.

Importing VHS into Imovie - file size question

The novice is back so bear with me please.
I'm using the Canopus ADVC-55 to import a 2 hour VHS into imovie so that I can convert it to DVD in iDVD. However, the file size is so massive that its eating up my hard drive. If I get an external hard drive, can I move the imovie project I'm working on to the external drive and will I still be able to use the imovie application even if the actual application is on the main hard drive? I just figure because of file limitations when working with digital files on my hard drive, it might be more practical to get a 200gig external but I want to make sure that I can still use the imovie application from it.

If you do get an external drive, make sure it's formatted Mac OS Extended or it may not work properly with iMovie.

Combine Files dialog and File Size

In the Combine Files dialog box, in the lower right corner, the File Size icons are Small, Default, and Large. These settings are very vague. Does anyone know what the actual settings are that these icons use?

File size questions

new to Apple MAC and iPhoto...so....I shot my new camera in jpeg, files are roughly 20mb...then I shot in RAW and after editing, the saved jpegs are ~ 5-10mb and up to 15mb....what happens to make this discrepency? how could my RAW converted jpegs be ~ 1/3 the size of straight out of camera jpegs?
another question...iPhoto is 1.7 gb, my iPhoto Library size it 37gb, but my pictures in iPhoto total 17gb.....is the discrepecy due to stuff like Slideshows I created? Faces just is referring the files right, not making duplicate files?...having trouble wrappping my head around stuff I''m seeing that doesn't add up...

It's all a bit more complex that that. There is no correlation between file size and the quality of a shot. A well exposed shot of 2 or 3 mb will print just as well as a well exposed shot of 25mb. There is no difference in what gets printed. A poorly exposed shot of 25mb will print like garbage.
It gets worse, we used to suggest a rule of thumb that printing at 300dpi was a reasonable giude to printing quality. Not any more. Printers and cameras have improved, iPhoto books are uploaded at something akin to 150 dpi.
Again, a 3 mb jpeg will print exactly as well as a 30 mb tiff.
Remember, the internet is full of high quality images that weigh in at a lot less than 500kb.
Where file size comes into play is when you're using destructive editing on a lossy format, like Jpeg, and, as I said above, that doesn't come into play in a non-destructive editing system like iPhoto.
The output from the export will - depending on the settings you use - either be smaller or larger than the jepg from a camera. It means very little - unless you're going to go an an edited destructively.

I'm new to Flash, and I'm trying to decide how to set the bit

sounds, especially through headphones connected to the computer. My
presentations, of course, sound better with higher bit rates, but
file sizes roughly double for each doubling of the bit rate. At 16
kbps, my files range from 1-3 MB, so for 32 kbps (which I'm leaning
toward now), they are 2-6 MB. My questions are
What's the concensus on the best bit rate for Internet sound
files, especially voice?
How important is it to minimize files size? The files are
already large enough so that dial-up folks will probably not listen
to them, and even the larger files seem to download fast enough
with my cable connection.

The best is the import high quality sound in wav format. Than
in library you can
play around with m3p compression changing the rates and all.
Checking the quality
versus the file size and find one that suit your needs. There
is no BEST format to
import. Every single fill have individual setting. It's all
depends on the sound.
Like, in case of voice. Very different to other sounds.
Save it as ADPCM (adaptive pulse code modulation) or Mp3
9kbps as your second choice.
Also take note that STREAM always lower down the quality , it
suppose to load fast so flash reduce
it enormously , usually sound like pure crap, go to library
(CTRL L to open) right click your sound
and go to properties, adjust the compression and type of
audio format to find best size and quality...

You would be surprised. I was doing voice overs two or 3
weeks ago for a client.
Needed 5 sounds , up to two minutes each, for different
slides. Ranging from 2.5 MB
to 2.9 MB per file.
After compressing all of them, I had 5 sounds in very good
quality of total size 1.4 MB

Embedding Chinese Characters and File Size

Hello,
Recently my company commissioned a Flash based eLearning module from a vendor. The module was in English. We then contracted a version in Chinese. When we got the files back we noticed a dramatic increase in the file size of the relevant resources. The size increase is substantial and causing problems with deployment.
I suspect this may have something to do with font embedding, but don't know for sure. My question: is it conceivable that embedding Chinese fonts would cause a dramatic increase in file size?
I'm including screenshots of the resource files for both the English and Chinese versions.

i wouldn't think the fonts would increase the file by more than 200k and i don't think there's any significant difference in swf file size published by the various versions of flash.

Converting WMV files to QuickTime and file size

I have QT Pro and I have no problem doing a "save as..." for converting WMV files to .mov. I also have Flip4Mac converting the file to be viewed in QT first.
My question is that if I do a straight-ahead "save as..." it'll make the file's size about 25% larger. If I try to do "export" with default settings it takes far longer and I have an even larger file. I've also tried playing with different compression in QT to save these files and haven't come up with anything that works better. Is there a way to manage the file size so it's the same or smaller, not bigger?

File size is dicated by the bitrate of the file. From my review of (thousands) of WMV files there appears to be some compression in the WMV format that is not reapplied when save as to a MOV container is performed. You can see in get info the WMV file say 100MB has maybe 125-150MB of data when it is fully loaded in Quicktime.
Thus save as does not apply the WMV compression the same as native WMV is all I can assume and the new QT file (MOV container) is bigger than the source file is.
Exporting to any new QT format (say H264) is going to make a file that is dependent on the new QT bitrate you select but if it is higher than the bitrate shown in the Get Info Inspector box when the original WMV has been opened it will be bigger without a doubt. So if you have a 3Mb/sec WMV file that you export to 700 kb/sec for iPod basic it should be 1/4 of the size. Use 5Mb/sec fo Apple TV it should be 2/3 larger.
I rarely use QT Pro to export and when I do I don't use default settings. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which offers easier control of variables, batch file processing, deinterlacing and other things and it is free.

Specify exact pixel and file size

I have recently purchased Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Windows for a company project. I need to compile a number of outdoor photographs to be uploaded to a specific website. The photo specifications required by the website are that all photos must in JPG format, be 350 pixels across and no more than 40kbs in file size. I've been experimenting with photoshop to try and achieve this effect, but am wondering if there is a simple way to accomplish this. I have been able to adjust horizontal pixel number, which automatically adjusts vertical pixel number and photo size. When I save photos, I am able to adjust what I assume is the resolution of the photo. If there is not too much color contrast in the photo, I can sometimes reduce the file size to 40kbs by taking it as low as it will go, but not always. I was just wondering if there is a simple way to make sure that a photo will be saved with a specific pixel number and no more than a certain file size (40kbs). I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

You can also set the pixel dimensions in S4W and save a step. Just enter the size you want in the box about halfway down the right panel, and then click Apply. Then you can optimize the file size by clicking the right-facing arrow at the upper right of the panel and choosing Optimize to file size. You can specify the exact size you want. Just watch the preview to be sure the quality is good enough at the target size.

CS5 - Photo Saving and File Size

Recently I've noticed, when uploading some photo's to my web site that the file size is rather small. I know that cropping, processing, and saving to jpeg results in file size reduction.
So ... I did a test. I took one photo shot in the raw format (the file size was about 21 mp). I then took it into Photoshop CS5 and just saved it as a jpeg ... and the file size went to 9.9 mp. I found that to be a questionable reduction.
My image size details of the test photo is:

5616 px x 3744 px
Document Size:
18.72 x 12.48 and 300 px Resolution
All of the following are checked:
Scale Style
Constrain Proportions
Resize Image
I have selected:
Bicubic (best for smooth gradients)
I saved the photo at the highest quality setting of 12
So the Question: Is this test reduction normal or am I doing something wrong with my "save as" settings

There is no set percentage of compression, it depends on the image content. If there are layers jpeg will not save so that in itself will reduce size. Some web options even strip out metadata. So are you thinking that is too much or too little compression?
I do know that there can be significant differences in saving at image quality 9 or 10 and at 12. Try it and see what you get. For what is the correct compression it depends on the end use. For web use maybe all you need is 5.
