IMovie no longer importing analog source correctly -- what's wrong?

Hi all,
I'm using iMovie '11 with a VCR deck connected via RCA to a ADVC-100 Canopus converter that is connected to my iMac via Firewire 800. This setup has served me well for many years, though I've recently taken on a big project to capture about 30 old VHS tapes. The first five were successful, but suddenly I am unable to import correctly.
The image from the VCR plays as it should in the capture window, and when I hit import, it goes into a record mode. However, when I'm done importing, no new clip is made in the Clip Library, and when I go to the finder, the file is there but it has no data (it's reported as being Zero bytes.)
I have tried restarting the iMac, popping in a different VHS. I'm normally pretty savy with troubleshooting these kind of problems, but this has me completly stumped.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

**Interim update**
I discovered that in addition to my HG1920 footage, there was also 1080/50p footage on my SD card. When viewing recorded video on the videocamera itself, the 1080/50p video is actually stored separately to any other footage on the SD card, but I'm pretty sure that having 1080/50p video present on the card, is the reason my video importing into iMovie ends in an error. Same when importing the archive of the footage (because I'm assuming both the HG1920 and the 1080/50p footage are all archived together.
Seeing as how iMovie cannot handle 1080/50p video, this is probably what causes the constant errors.
I deleted the 1080/50p video off my SD card; deleted the existing video archive on my HD, and re-archived (as a precaution) and then attempted the normal import into iMovie directly from my videocamera, and voila, it worked like it always used to.
I then tested this by importing the archived video - this also worked.
I then tested another SD card I have recently used, and also discovered that this had 1080/50p footage on it as well. I did the same thing with this card as the other one (deleted the 1080/50p video, re-archived, imported directly from camera and imported from the archive), and everything worked fine.
Hooray!

Is it possible to turn off the fluid grid function in dreamweaver during the process of building your site by mistake? It was working fine and simply stopped and I don't see how to correct what is wrong.

There is no specific function that turns FGL on or off.
When you say that it has stopped, do you mean that the handles no longer show?
If that is the case, then I think you may have modified the CSS to such an extent that Dreamweaver no longer recognises it as belonging to FGL.
There are a couple of avenues for you
Redo the site and make sure not to touch the FGL CSS
paste the code here so that we can see what has gone wrong.

please i need help on this. I really need to fix this

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance.

  • IE does not refresh correctly what is wrong?

I've created a new java class "ShowDocument.class" and ran it once throw an htm file "ShowDocument.html" using IE Explorer 6.0.2
First time loaded correctly, then I modified the source code ShowDocument.java and recompiled it and viewed it using appletviewer and it showed my new changes.
but IE insist to show the old class that first loaded.
    I did the following:
    1) remove the class completely and did the new compile cycle and try to load a brand new instance of IE.
    2) search for all classes in the "my computer" drives and deleted any cashed ShowDocument.class.
    3) from the tools menu, internet options, I deleted all the files, including offline contents
All these trials passed without any success.
    Any idea?
    thanks!

when I recompile something I always just close the browser and restart it, and it works fine. If I don't close it, it uses the old class. Moving on, you can clear the java plugin cache by going to Control Panel (assuming you're using windows), then click on the java plugin icon. When that's opened, go to the Cache tab, and click "Clear Cache."

  • ITunes does not sync songs/albums to my iPod Touch correctly, what's wrong?

I have my iPod set to manually manage music and videos and when I drag songs onto it through iTunes, it doesn't show up on my iPod right; like it says "unknown album" or it wont update the name, but shows up perfectly fine in itunes. I don't really know what to do, because I don't have the space to save all my music to my computer anymore ( I never had these issues when I set it to sync everything). Any suggestions?

Try right clicking on the movie then click on Advanced (at the top of the iTunes window) it gives you the option of creating an iPod/iPhone version .

My project in imovie says source unavailable after I moved the events to the backup drive. It is connected and shows up in the events library. I can see the pictures but they won't play without the source. What do I do.

I moved it because I did not have room on my hard drive to import my latest video. I take videos my grandkids basketball games then edit them as projects. I don't have room to move the whole events library back to my hard drive. Can I move part of it at a time.
I filled up my 1 TB back up drive so got a 3TB to move my video projects to. Do I have to move both the i photo videos and the projects to the 3 TB drive together some how. When can I delete them off the hard drive .
I moved all the i photo library to the 3 TB drive and deleted them out of i photo. That is 87 GB which I don't have room for on my hard drive.
I think when I use the export movie to my hard drive it works but will I still be able to edit it later if I want. Is it best to do quick time or i tunes if I use the export feature.

  • Importing analog to imovie

Man what a pain! I have 10 or 15 years worth of analog 8mm video tapes. I was able to digitize them and burn them to DVD (another story for another time). I then used handbrake to take the audio and video .ts files created from the analog tapes and made mp4 files, thinking that was the way to get it into iMovie. Boy was I wrong! It takes about 7-8 hours to create the thumbnails for one DVD that iMovie 08 needs.
So where did I go wrong? Should I convert to another format besides mp4? All I know is I am trying to do is edit about 18 hours of analog video before Christmas- that is Christmas 2008, not 2015.
I just need a little guidance. Thanks.
    Terry

If you like to make DVDs, give iMovie 06 a try.
iMovie 06 does not make thumbnails, (an hour of video imports in one hour).
I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
iMovie 08 has replaced "Share to iDVD" with "Share to media browser". Also iMovie 08 cannot set chapter markers, this has to be done with another program.
When using iMovie 06, one mouse click will set a chapter marker EXACTLY where you specify. In just a few seconds set all your chapter markers. When you are done editing just "share to iDVD 08" and all of your chapter markers will be there!
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

  • IMovie 8.0.6 will no longer import .mov or .dv files

Trying to troubleshoot my wife's iMovie (2008 MacBook, OS 10.5.8) issues:
-no longer imports .mov or .dv files (worked up until a week ago or so)
-in testing, my MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.3) imports said files without issues
-we've deleted apple.com.iMovie08.plist file from MB, no change
Import process looks on MB like it is going to work, but import 'barometer' shows only briefly before disappearing, with no import resulting. Troubleshooting is made more frustrating given that this worked previously on this machine. Perhaps a system update or something similar is the cause?
    Any help welcome...
    Cheers,
    Andrew

forgot to mention above that MB in question will import short .m4v files without drama. Files we are attempting to import as .dv or .mov files are about 20Gb.

  • Will FCE 4 Import Analog 8mm Tapes (unlike iMovie '08)

    Hello--
I've had a heck of a time importing my older analog 8mm tapes onto my MacBook and was wondering if dropping bigger bucks on FCE 4 will help.
Since iMovie '08 for some reason won't import analog 8mm tapes from my Sony TRV-330 Digital8 camcorder, I've had to import the tapes using iMovie HD. The problem is then I have to save the iMovie HD project before I can import the video into iMovie '08 where I want to tag and edit it...and this takes a lot of extra time (hours per tape).
On other discussion boards, people have suggested using other video importing applications such as Vidi, iDive, and QuickTime Pro. The first two didn't seem to work out for me, so I just spent $30+ to get QT Pro...that was a mistake because the video and audio quickly got out of synch which was completely unacceptable (some of my older tapes have periodic video and audio dropouts due a problematic camcorder at the time, which I understand can cause that problem...but it didn't seem to be a problem for iMovie HD).
So, since I've read on these FCE discussion threads that FCE uses QuickTime it makes me wonder if I'd have the same video/audio synch problems in FCE (if it even would import analog 8mm video at all).
BOTTOM LINE: Has anyone successfully imported analog 8mm videotapes from a digital camcorder into FCE 4? I'd really like to be able to catalog, tag, and edit ALL my tapes (analog 8mm and Digital8) in iMovie '08 (but am willing to try to do it in FCE 4 if that's a better comprehensive solution). When will Apple fix iMovie '08 to make the lives of those of us who want to transfer old analog 8mm tapes easier??

Thanks for the response, M.R. I didn't know QuickTime was also the import engine for iMovie HD...if that's the case, I don't know why iMovie HD would import my analog 8mm tapes while iMovie '08 doesn't (assuming iMovie '08 also uses QuickTime as the import engine).
I haven't really considered a converter box since the Sony TRV-330 camcorder does the analog to digital conversion...seems like it'd be unnecessary. Do you think there's the possibility that the output from a converter box would look different than the output from my digital camcorder to iMovie '08?

  • AVI import into iMovie - how long?

    Hi
Trying to import a 2 hour avi to iMovie - how long does it take?
    (Using a MacBook 2.0)
Started off saying 60 minutes - now its saying 90 minutes - duration still increasing...?
    Thanks

Started again today because didn't want to leave on
    overnight unattended.
Time estimate in software progress bar is soooo
    wrong.
At the moment its 70 minutes left (I know this will
    take several hours.)
    These are my timings.
    17:21 127 mins left
    18:05 121
    19:21 99
    20:21 77
    Can anyone explain this?
    Thanks
Originally, iDVD didn't try to make wild guesses at the time remaining - it just showed a 'barber pole' - and people complained. Time estimates were added that are USUALLY grossly inacurate and people still complain.
The best advice 'walk away and let it run'. (Remember: A watched pot doesn't boil any faster.)

  • Very long Import Times

I have an MP4 movie file about 172MB in size. I wanted to pull it into iMove 08 for editing but when I select the file and begin the import, states it will take about 280 minutes. I tried a smaller version about 80MB an only took 20 minutes to import? So 172MB, maybe 50 minutes right?
Is the stated time by iMovie correct ? I have seen other posts where users have also indicated an import time of 280 minutes. Does iMove state this long import time and then adjust it to a more accurate calculation once it has read part of the file? Is the 240 minutes a real import time?

Believe much of the time required for import may be associated with the "thumbnail generation" process for simple file imports. The length of time required to generate thumbnails will depend on a number of factors to include, CPU power of your platform, the number of processing currently being performed, the display size of your importing file, the frame rate, and the duration of the clip. DO NOT RELY ON THE FILE SIZE IN MAKING YOUR ESTIMATES! iMovie '08 appears to generate 1 thumbnail for each frame being imported so the total number of thumbnails is equal to the frame rate time the file duration. While the thumbnails created are all the same size, the amount of data be "condensed" into the thumbnail depends on the size of the source frame and its graphic complexity. As to the the ETFC (estimated time for completion) of the generation process, the initial estimates are just that -- estimates. They will change as the application better refines its progress and can increase or decrease depending on what is going on at any given time. E.g., if you are ripping a DVD in one application, converting a file in another, answering questions in this forum, and generating your thumbnails simultaneously, each process will obviously run more slowly that if just one process were being performed independently.
ADDED: As Winston points out, "capture/imports" can add even more time to import process and will depend on the files being imported. SD DV files will take less time than HDV/AVCHD files.
