Imovie not reading my camera - Just Imovie

Hi, I am familiar with Imovie and have used it for many videos in the past. I have a Canon HG-10 and Imovie 09. I am using OS X snow leopard as well.
I have not used Imovie for a few months - Since July 4. This time when I went to import video from my camera, I movie gave me the following message:
" No camera Connected - to import video, please connect a camera."
The cam is connected and is visible in both the "finder" window as well as the system profiler under USB. I have used different USB cords and the cam is visible in finder with both cords. I have turned the cam on and off repeatedly. I have re-booted my mac repeatedly. I have uninstalled, then re-installed I movie. With no remedy.
The cam is visible to my Mac. The cam has worked with Imovie 09 in the past. The only thing I have done since July 4th was upgrade to snow leopard.
I am no Mac dummy. I am not new to IMovie. But I have spent 4 hours trying to get this thing to work and cannot get Imovie to "see" my camera while my Mac can.
Any suggestions on how I can get Imovie to recognize my camera ?
Roy

Hi Sheryl,
Yes it is plugged in ( the camera ) and it reads " PC CONNECT" . My Mac knows it is there. My I Movie does not see it though. I don't know how that can be.

  • My macbook will not read my camera?

My Macbook will no longer read my camera when I plug it in with the usb. Does anyone know why?

    Hi,
Have you tried a different USB cable to connect.
As a quick fix but not a solution to your problem get a USB card reader, take the memory card from the camera and use that to get pictures on your computer.
    Hope this helps,
    Alan

  • Iphoto not reading camera

I just bought a Mac Book Air that did not have iPhoto.
I downloaded from App store and downloaded the camera driver.
It is stil not reading my camera.
Can anyone help. I am hours into this and so frustrated.
    Alicia

thank for you telling me where i could see if the camera is actually being read. i went to the system profiler and the camera is being read by the computer, i just don't know how to get iphoto to read it.
and just to clarify, this is one of those mini digital cameras that i don't think is more than $20 or $30. i got it for christmas and just thought it would be nice to be able to attach to a keychain and use when i don't happen to have my canon on me. so, if by chance this isn't going to work and the camera needs a regualr PC or whatever it won't be the biggest deal in the world, but if it's a simple fix i'd like to get it working.
    thanks

  • New 27" i5 not reading card reader or camera

Just bought the new 27" i5 for my wife--she's a photographer. It will not read her cameras or card readers. Absolutely nothing is showing. Have tried several card readers and digital cameras. Is there a preference for this? Please help. Thanks.

    Hi OceanB
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
First thing to check is the Finder Preferences!
Open Finder, then go up on the menu bar and select Finder > Finder Preferences. Now then in both the General and Sidebar tabs (sections) make sure that all the boxes are checked.
Also note that some cameras +(Canons and my new Nickon for examples)+ will not mount on the desktop or in finder, but if setup properly should open and mount in iPhoto or other selected photo software. To see and setup your photo storage devices, go to the Applications folder and open *Image Capture* and set it up to open the photo software you want to use.
If you think that you have a problem with the USB ports, check them with another device such as an External HD, iPod, etc.
If the ports are not working at all try the reset steps in the following article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317?viewlocale=en_US

  • Lightroom 3.3 will not read camera raw?

Hi. I recently updated to LR 3.3 and for some reason it will not read my camera raw. I have a Canon E05 Rebel T1i and a PC. The program reads all of my JPG images, but none of the raw. Is there some update available or some setting that I can change? I am not very computer savvy, so any help would be very beneficial. Thanks

I'm experiencing the same issue with my 7D where LR3.3 will read JPEGs but not the RAW files when connected directly to the camera. I believe it has something to do with the RAW format Canon uses with their DSLRs. LR3.3 has no issue the RAW files (also a .CR2) produced from my Canon G11.
I''m running Windows 7 64-Bit and both LR and my cameras firmware are upto date. Further the Canon's DSLR RAW format isn't recognized by Windows. If you try using Windows Explorer to copy the files from the camera to your HD, they show up a 0byte "local disks".
Canon's DPP converts the DSLR RAW file into a .CR2 which can then be imported into LR.

  • CS4 will not read Canon 5D Mark2's CR2 files

Bought the Canon 5D Mark 2 for christmas.
Am running Bridge and PS CS4
They will not read the camera's CR2 files
The icon of CR2 shows in bridge but wont read the file
    I'm on a Mac
Looking for a link to download the update.
    Please help!
    Nana

If from within bridge you go to Help>Update that should find
the camera raw 5.7 update and install it.
Here's where you can manually download the camera raw 5.7 update if
    need be.

  • Portege R500- after hardware upgrade ODD will not read

Recently I acquired a 2008 vintage Toshiba R500-11Z ultraportable laptop. It needed a new keyboard since most of the keys were dead, so I purchased a new replacement (exact same keyboard, from an eBay seller). I also decided to give it a new lease of life by installing a solid-state drive. The old keyboard was secured to the chassis with some sort of sticky back plastic which wasn't reusable, so for the new keyboard I used some strong double sided tape. Before screwing the plastic undercarriage back on I installed Windows 7, with the undercarriage loosely fitted in place. Windows install completed and all looked good. After screwing in the undercarriage I discovered that the optical drive its original "open-top" Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-844S would not read discs; it just makes a noise 3 times but does not then spin up as it would normally. Drive is visible in both Explorer and Device Manager.
After unscrewing the undercarriage, reseating the optical drive, and rescrewing a number of times I haven't been able to get the optical drive to read any discs. What I have established is that the disc must be catching on the ceiling, thus signalling the drive to not spin up; by leaving the screws off that side of the undercarriage allowed me to create a gap so there is more room between the optical drive and the ceiling of the laptop. Discs will then spin up and Windows autoplay will open them. What I can't work out is what has changed in terms of how the drive is mounted and its position relative to the ceiling above it. Or whether the drive is now trying to spin up at an angle. There are two locking screws that hold the optical drive in place, so the drive should be located in the same place its always been.
I just wondered whether anyone had encountered this problem before, and whether there is an easy fix. I feel I've hit a brick wall on this one!
    Thanks in advance.

Just to say after a lot of head scratching I worked out the problem. I'd made a mistake in reattaching the metal mounting clip to the back of the optical drive.
I'd screwed the clip on on the outside of the orange coloured connector when it needed to be on the inside (between the optical drive and the orange connector). It seems this must have pushed the drive out of place just enough to stop it from working properly.

  • I am trying to import i frame from an SD90 video camera to iMovie, but it does not see the camera. Footage goes to i photo Why?

I am trying to import video ( i frame) from an sd90 ( listed for mac) but i movie does not see the camera. It imports into i photo. Is this normal ?

If you quit iPhoto and iMovie (with the camera still attached) then put the camera into VCR playback mode. Then launch iMovie and see if it can see the camera. If not, get out the power adapter for the camera and plug it into the wall, plug the camera into the power adapter. Reboot your Mac and wait for iPhoto to launch again automatically. Don't let it import the clips, just say No, quit the program. Then put the camrea int VCR/Playback mode, launch iMovie and check again to see if it can see the camera. Once iMovie sees it the first time it should be quicker to recognize it in future. But iPhoto does try to race in there and grab everything first.
To turn this off go to iPhoto Menu in iPhoto > Preferences > Look for Connecting camera opens: (click on the pulldown menu and choose No Application) This effectively turns off iPhoto when you first attach the camera. And it opens the way to iMovie recognizing it quicker.

  • I have downloaded footage from a Sony Z1 on to a hard drive which I've put on to my Mac Book Pro and it will not read in iMovie. Can somebody help me?

I shot three  video clips on a Sony Z1 camera. As I only had the cable to plug it in to my PC, I uploaded the footage on to the PC and then copied it on to my hard drive. I then put the hard drive into my MacBook Pro so that I could continue to edit it on there, however it will not read the files. The audio is WAV and the video footage has come up as M2V files. I need to be able to import it in to iMovie to edit however it is not letting me do so.
Is it because they are M2V's or do I need to upload the footage directly on to the MacBook and not on to a PC first?
If anyone could help, it would be massively appreciated! Thanks in advance!

re-post in the iMovie forum: https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie.  Good luck.

  • IMovie does not see my camera

iMovie will not recognize my camera. My camera is a Sony DCR-SR47.
When I select Import from camera, I only see my facetime camera. I tried unplugging cables, restarting camera, changing cables, restarting iMovie and restarting the computer.
It seems pretty straightforward, but ... no camera shows up.

According to http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US your camcorder is supported by iMovie '11 (Version 9).
But, according to http://help.apple.com/imovie/10/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US it is not supported by iMovie '13 (Version 10)
The reason is Apple  has dropped support for some of the older codecs.
So I infer you are using iMovie 10?  All is not lost, but you will have to copy the files from you camera to hard disk with Finder and then transcde them into a format that iMovie 10 accepts.  The article:
    http://lauralily10.tumblr.com/post/68120460685/mpg-imovie-mac-how-do-i-import-a- mpg-file-into-imovie
    should help here.
There are a number 3rd party apps, some free, that will do the transcoding in fact Quicktime 10 may be the easiest since it converts old codecs before playing and you can save the converted files

  • I have produced DVD using iMovie, now want to download this back to iMovie, will not read DVD, have been told a piece of software available - any chance anybody knows what?

have produced DVD using iMovie, now want to download this back to iMovie, will not read DVD, have been told a piece of software available - any chance anybody knows what?

Handbrake is not ideal for this.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Final cut pro not reading camera or mini dv player

My mini dv player jammed so we went to the canon gl2 to use as our vtr and final cut pro won't read it we tried our other gl2 and final cut won't read it we also tried to see if I movie would read the cameras or the machine and I movie would'nt recognize them either. Once I movie recognized the camera but would not control it or by running the camera manually. what happens when the fire wire cord is plugged in the program won't initialize. Any ideas?

Stream of consciousness writing went out with Jack Kerouac. Please use paragraphs.
    What computer do you have?
Are you connecting your camera through external firewire drives?
The inability of cameras to easily connect via firewire comes up here daily, if not hourly. (facility with the SEARCH function located in the upper right of the forum is highly encouraged.) Canon cameras seem to bring their own special problems as well. If you have an iSight G5, you may have other issues ...
Try this as a troubleshooting sequence -
    - Turn everything off
    - If you have an external firewire drive, disconnect it.
    - With only the Canon connected to the firewire bus, turn the camera on
    - Turn on the Computer
    - Open up System Profiler and look for the FIREWIRE section.
    - Do you see your camera listed?
    If no,
    - you have basic connection issues - try the firewire port reset (do a search here on the forum)
    - if you have an iSight camera - disconnect it and try again.
    If yes,
    - Open up iMovie and try to capture a short segement.
    - Did it work?
    if no,
    - there is something potentially wacky with your camera settings.
    if yes,
    - Now open up FCP, make sure your firewire communication protocol is FIREWIRE BASIC
    - Try to log a short clip and capture using Batch Capture.
    - Did it work?
    If no,
    - you likely likely need to reinstall Quicktime. Search for 'quicktime reinstall' on this forum.
    If yes,
    - you may need to install a second bus for your capture drive. You do not want to be capturing to the system drive.
