Imovie o9 freezes

Just upgraded the OS to 10.7.3 and now everytime I use imovie it hangs and I just watch the spinning wheel.
Any suggestions on how to fix. Was going to upgrade to imove 11, but reading that that is not any better.
Please help!

I have the same problem!! Hoping that someone can assist as this is a program that is un-usable.

  • IMovie 11 Freezing at startup and file structure

    Hi,
I know others have asked about iMovie 11 freezing at startup. I haven't, however, seen much discussion of the event file structure. To solve the freezing startup, I put all the event directories (folders)  in a temp folder and brought only the necessary ones back into the iMovie Events folder, checking after each "move" that iMovie would start. I'm not thrilled about this approach, because it seems like iMovie could freeze anytime and I'd be back to square one. Anyway, my question concerns the directory structure of each event folder.
One of my events, Halloween, has three clips *.dv, an iMovie Data file, and three subdirectories: iMovie Movie Cache, iMovie Thumbnails, and iMovie Waveforms. iMovie Thumbnails has three clips *.mov and its own iMovie Movie Cache directory. The two iMovie Movie Cache directories seem to have the same content.
This doesn't make sense to me. Why two iMovie Movie Cache directories with the same content? What can I safely delete if iMovie starts freezing.
    Thanks!
    Bruce

Thank you. What about the iMovie Data file, can I delete that, too? Also, do you know why iMovie Thumbnails has its own copy of iMovie Movie Cache? Lastly, are these folders (the ones I can delete) the ones that seem to confuse iMovie 11 and freeze it upon startup? I went to an Apple store, but the "genius" had a limited knowledge of iMovie 11. Where does one find out about these things!
    Thanks again,
    Bruce

  • IMovie 09 freezes each time I open the project I'm working on. Help?

iMovie 09 freezes each time I open the project I'm working on. It has worked perfectly fine the past week, but now it won't load different aspects of the screen. For example, when I role over the screen the video will play in the small play back screen, but I can't actually see the film strip or make any changes. Any suggestions? I need to finish this video for work - would love any help!

Try trashing iMovie's preference file. See this User Tip by AppleMan1958:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4061
The Tip relates to iMovie '11. For iMovie '09 the preference file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist" and will be found in your Home folder Library/Preferences (NOT the Library folder at the top level in Macintosh HD).

  • Imovie 08 freezes

imovie 08 freezes right after i open it up. It won't let me do anything and the little colored wheel just keeps spinning. I have to go to force quit to get out of it. force quit says that imovie 08 is not responding. i tried reinstalling the software and that still did not work, i also did a repair disk permissions
can anyone help. Iphoto seems to work fine

If you have video clips in iPhoto, this could cause it to hang. Open iPhoto, make a duplicate of ONE of your video clips and close iPhoto. Then open iMovie. It will open, eventually, after a minute or so of the spinning beach-ball; maybe how long depends on how much video the iMovie has to load. It maybe 'unexpectedly quit', but just restart it.
    That's how I got iMovie08 to run.

  • Why does my project in iMovie keep freezing when I play it in big screen?

My iMovie project freezes when played in full screen. I have no other background programs running- I've made sure and my MacBook is only a couple of days old!

  • IMovie clips freezing/stuttering while editing in playback & after exporting to Quicktime

I've been working with iMovie since 2003 and if its not one thing, its always another. This particular problem is a new one, and I can't seem to find the get around. Any advice would be appreciated!
Working on a wedding video (large event size but only 6-8 minute project) and the clips are freezing/stuttering in the project and viewer windows when I try to play them back. Each time it freezes, I get the spinning wheel for 5-10 seconds before I can place my marker and try again. Endless cycle. This happened in a few other projects, but those I was able to edit out the freezing clips OR found that exporting to Quicktime seemed to smooth out the glitches, just made editing a pain.
Not this time. Even after exporting to Quicktime, there are still numerous glitches in my quicktime movies (using default and numerous other settings).
Here are the things I've tried: reinstalling my iLife 09 software, running all the updates, clearing off my hard drive (to give me 70+GB of space), detaching my external hard drive and only using internal memory, restarting, and deleting the plists. No luck, still have these glitches.
Could this be an issue with audio or using the stabilization option (used that for the first time)?

    jepartyservice wrote:
.. 90min movie .. share to iDVD .. iMovie would freeze and be unresponsive.. .exporting to QuickTime .. 13 hours .. random stills .. iMovie will freeze ..
Would putting all of the clips and the project on an external hard drive help? Would updating to OS 10.5.8 help exporting to QuickTime?
plus your profile, MacBook, indicates to me, your internal harddrive is full.
check with DiskUtility, how many partitions your internal drive has.
check, how much free disk space internal you offer your apps.
imho, extHDD is a MUST when editing video..
.. is there any way to move our already edited clips from iM09 to iM06?
use 'Export using Quicktime', choose dv-stream (for SD content) or AppleIntermediate (for HD content) - these are the only codecs, iMHD6 reads..
this export consolidate the project => it comes into iMHD6 as a single solid file, e.g. no more editing of titles, which are now 'burned into film'.
_consider to create a special 'transfer'-version of your project:_
in Project Browser, select project, ctrl-click, 'duplicate', and create a pre-production version (no titles, no music, additional material for further editing, longer clips to add transitions in iMHD6.. ect)

  • IMovie keeps freezing on editing

I just got my macbook pro a week ago, brand new but for the past few days my iMovie keeps freezing up whenever i try to edit a video, or scroll through a clip. I can't use the option-command-escape to force quit because it doesn't work, and i can't click on any of the other apps or icons. The only way was to hold down the power button and restart my laptop. Even after restarting, it still does the same thing, freezes up in the middle of editing or scrolling, then i have to shut down and restart my laptop again. I've googled for ways to deal with it but none of them seem to work. Can someone please tell me how to fix it? I had no problems editing, importing and exporting from my old macbook white, and neither from my new macbook pro in the beginning but it's getting really frustrating that i have to reboot every single time and i feel like that would ruin the laptop as it's brand new.

    Bengt W,
I appreciate your help.  Yes, all my photo and videos are originating from iPhoto '11 (that is how my camera imports).  I did exactly as you describe above and I was able to complete the movie and make a DVD that I needed for Christmas?   SO that was great.  And I greatly appreciate your time and efforts to make that happen.
However, we are back to the same problems and nothing seems to fix these movies now and they are still doing the same thing described above.  I am so discouraged that I just have not done anything more until recently.
Yesterday, iPhoto just disappeared.  I had iMovie open overnight.  The next day the iPhoto icon had a circle with a diagonal line and when I clicked on the icon "Damaged or corrupted ..." was the message.  I checked Finder and there was no longer an iPhoto application!   I reinstalled iPhoto from my DVD and did updates but only got to version 9.2.3.  Then I noted in the Apple store there is a version 9.4.2.  But I cannot get that version because it requires OS 10.7.5 but I have 10.6.8.  Similar problem with iMovie, I have version 9.0.4 and the newest is 9.0.8.
I have watched the "reviews" of these new OS, iPhoto, and iMovie.   They are getting hammered by users with a wide range of problems and low ratings.  If that were not the case I would just pay the money and see if upgrading the OS and these apps would help.  Frankly, I don't have any confidence it would.  I about to declare my two year experiment with Apple as a failure and that is very sad because I've invested hundreds of hours trying to make/keep their software working.   Ultimately the market place will decide but recent user feedback sure seems to point to some ugly outcomes.   Sorry for my rant but Apple should not impose on folks like you who are so giving to overcome their product shortcomings.

  • Every Time I Open iMovie It Freezes

The other day, I imported an event into iMovie '11. During the optimizing phase, the loading bar froze and the spinning rainbow wheel appeared. I waited for a couple of minutes to see if the problem would fix itself but it didn't so I decided to force quit iMovie. Now every time I open iMovie, it goes straight to trying to import the event again and will just freeze. I've tried restarting, shutting down, and force quitting it multiple times but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions? Also, I'm using an iMac OS X 10.6.8

Have you added anything unusual to the project, compared to others that play normally? For example - photos other than jpegs, or 3rd party sound effects downloaded from the internet.
Have you made any speed changes, such as slow motion, using manually entered percentages rather than the presets from the speed change slider. This normally causes issues with audio on export, but doesn't seem to affect the project in Edit or Preview mode. So it's probably not causing the freeze issue, but thought I should mention it.

  • New 27 iMAC keeps crashing iMovie and freezing videos on YouTube & Quicktime

We just got a new Sept 2013 iMac three days ago, purchased refurbished from the Apple Store online. The whole point of the purchase was to be able to use iMovie to thoroughly edit videos for our YouTube channel, use garage band, lots of internet surfing and video watching etc. We spent the extra dollars to get what we thought was the most improved version of the iMac with all the souped up specs in order to avoid any hassle and headaches from a lack of performance. Here's what we have:
    3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
27-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1440 resolution
    8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB hard drive (We have only used 80 GBs of it so far, so plenty of space left)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
    720p Camera & Mic
    OS X 10.9
We're feeling a bit duped now as this seems to have turned out to just be a big expensive piece of junk. Here are our problems:
    - Firstly, thank goodness that we had our own Logitech HD camera/mic left over from our PC because the "HD camera" built in to the iMac is worse in quality than my old blackberry curve. Grainy, lack luster, mic has sharp and distant sound, really really bad and false advertisement.
    - In the middle of using iMovie (iMac came preinstalled with the newest one, i think its 10?), it will stop responding properly or will crash and close, we wont even have any other programs running.
    - When opening Quicktime to record a new video, in the middle of a recording or while the recording window is idle, it will start glitching - flashing between live footage and a freeze frame repeatedly. The only way to stop it is to quit out Quicktime and open again and try to record quickly, or in some cases we have to completely restart the iMac, which then still randomly in the middle of a recording or idle window it will continue to flash and glitch. (You can view an example here in the last minute of one of our videos, we tried to make it work and kept the take since we were doing our outro music dance, but it totally ***** when this happens randomly during our content portion and we have to redo recording. http://youtu.be/MAJzaEShJGw?t=4m34s )
    - When watching YouTube videos, the computer takes a while to respond to a command, like if we click on a certain part of the video, it will not load it until we press the pause/play button a few times and wait. Also at the beginning of a video it will start glitching and freezing again, similar to how we explained above in the quicktime, but faster.
If you are familiar with what could be the problem or have any advice, PLEASE HELP, we are concerned that after dropping so much money within just 3 days of use, this iMac is not performing flawlessly in the areas that we most needed and want to know if these issues are common and fixable or if its a defect that would require we send this thing back immediately. We did not get apple care and would hate to have wasted money that we really dont have on a glitchy crashing huge piece of junk.
Want to mention a few other pros and cons unrelated to our issues, for those who may be considering buying one too:
    PROS:
    - The Magic mouse is really great, particularly because of the scrolling and zooming gestures. (Though sometimes i accidentaly swipe in a browser and go back to a previous page losing any information that was input on the page i was originally on, for example, i had to retype this whole apple imac inquiry because i swiped backwards by mistake and the whole form cleared! annoying, wish the horizontal swipe navigated between tabs instead of going through the page view history.)
    - When the imovie is not crashing, after watching some tutorials and making a few vids, its a really greatly improved program from the '09 version we used to use. I import and edit videos much faster now, and footage does not freeze or take time to load while im dragging and dropping, it is immediately responsive.
    - Love using the Talk to text function (like Siri) by pressing "fn" twice. Use this to write long emails and papers with ease. Would like to see a "Speak" read back option that allows for text to be selected and read back (like Siri on iPad)
    CONS:
    - The text is SO small everywhere and there is no option to exactly set text size across the whole system, only option given is to set a different resolution which lessens the quality of the screen with pixelation, and some programs give you the option to set custom sized text in their individual preferences.
    - Sometimes in both iMovie & Garageband, simple automated functionality will stop working, for example in iMove, when certain screens or images are dragged and dropped to the work area by the activity bar (i dont know what else to call it, the line that rolls across during playback or stays put when pressing spacebar) usually, that screen or image will click into place to align with the activity bar and will highlight the bar yellow to further communicate that alignment before you drop it, but after extended use in a session, that snapping into alignment when adding items stops working. Or sometimes you can drag and drop the ends of a title screen to adjust/trim the clip, but after extended time that too stops responding and does not let the cursor turn into that arrow that allows you to trim or extend, until after many frustrated clicks or a quit and restart.
    - When sharing/exporting a video from iMovie, i would recommend unchecking the add to theatre option because it significantly extends the amount of time needed to complete the action and i found out the theatre is just like a video stream of your movies to be shared on icloud for easy access from your other devices (similar to the icloud photostream connected to iPhoto). It takes the time to make the video readily availabe in various sizes on the Mac server for easy access, which means it takes forever for your video to be exported to where you actually want it. This is not something we need and is not worth the wait time. (For example, last ime we left the theatre box checked, the progress status of the video was estimated to be completed in 351 minutes, and then 20 minutes later that somehow inclreased to 385 minutes, then duddenly it was done, so i think this add to theatre option also cause the progress status updates to go berzerk.)

Given the maximum RAM that model can use is 32GB, and the earlier release of that 27" mid-2013 iMac is nearly the same in most regards, you may note the listing of this slightly older iMac 27" is here in an Apple support document...
•iMac: How to remove or install memory:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423#1
The images of where the RAM chips are located, behind a metal plate, should be similar in your iMac and the mid-2013 iMac 27" shown in images on that page. Note there are several models discussed.
You could take the computer to a certified Apple service facility (retail store, or specialist reseller) and pay them to do this, and buy the RAM from them, and you will pay for this at a retail level. If they do it, you'd want to be assured the computer did all the things you sought to cure by upgrading RAM, correctly without fault. Like run tests and stuff.... Or there's no reason to not go ahead (after confirming from Apple) that you could buy quality RAM and do this job yourself, citing the Apple page link I'd posted above.
    Contact Apple Support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
You'd have to obtain the correct RAM (as indicated in my earlier post, citing MacTracker) of suitable quality for use in a Macintosh computer, and the recommendation for a DIY is to get the kit from 'Other World Computing' OWC online at their site. You can talk to knowledgable sales staff at OWC about what you have and what you need, and to help they may ask for the product serial number.
This is OWC and they have the spec RAM required for your iMac 27" model; double-check info:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L
Since yours is an Apple Refurbished model it will have a different number series. Unlike those in a retail store, because Apple does that to tell what ones they refurbished; refurbs I bought online were like that.
With questions during the first three months, you can get 'support' under the initial 90-day span of ownership of the new (and certified) Apple refurbs bought online; the other part of that is 'service' for 1 year. Call a nearest retail Apple Store, to set a genius appointment; or go online, and start the process of reporting your issue, while you still have some kind of warranty on the device. They can diagnose the issues you cite and tell you if you can upgrade the RAM (as you likely can) then you can buy and install the RAM yourself and probably pay less than 1/2 the retail rate, if you get some from OWC. A diagnosis is free if the Genius looks into it, but you'd need to set an appointment & lug the iMac to their store; protected from weather/shock.
If you want to extend the complementary service to three years (less the included 90-days) and add two years of AppleCare service, that is an affordable option of about $170. For a total of three years coverage.
    {If you had a 21.5-inch iMac the RAM would require a service department visit where they use a different method to install the RAM upgrade. Those are built differently than the 27-inch iMac.}
There is a bit of detailed important information in the Apple link on how to upgrade the iMac RAM. There is a certain amount of RAM installed already and these chips would likely be removed if you get matching sets of new RAM to upgrade the capacity. And no matter what some say, there is a reason why they can be upgraded with more. Even with Mavericks OS X 10.9.x and its 'memory compression' etc, it would gladly accept all the RAM upgrade chips it could swallow. (Behind metal screen, mid-bottom iMac 27")
You may need to consider questions about applications that use system resources separate from those about whatever issues your iMac seems to exhibit. There may be some other cause of the video and iMovie symptoms, but more RAM won't hurt given the beast you bought can use 32GB and it has 8.
And if it seems too much to handle, you have 14 days from date of
purchase to take it back. Contact them ahead of then, if you do.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Imovie '09 freezes when I try to open it. Help?

    Hi,
I'm knee deep in a video editing project and I've been editing every day. I'm trying to upload this video on Christmas day, tomorrow. Today I open up Imovie to finish the editing and for some reason, it's freezing. The video and clips won't load and I can't even access the Project Manager or anything. I right click on the icon but it comes up as "Not Responding". I force quit. I thought it just a fluke, but I've tried a half dozen times, tried restarting my computer, etc, and nothing helps. It freezes up as soon as I try to open it every time. This is exceptionally frustrating as, like I mentioned, I'm trying to upload this video tomorrow.
And there have been no changes I know about to my system. I haven't updated, downloaded, or uploaded anything that I can think of recently. It was working just fine yesterday. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?
    Thanks.

Everytime I click to open my iMovie, the application opens, and then after a couple second it freezes, and it says 'application not responding' when I right click on the icon to force quit it....
What is wrong? how can i fix this?
    Thank-you in advance!

Reinstalling is probably not the solution
    what version of iPhoto?
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • When i open imovie, it freezes. why, and what should i do?

I have a very important project to do for school and have to give it back next week. It's on iMovie, and it's a 54minutes video. Since yesterday, I have a problem. I don't know if because it's too big, but when I open it, it freezes, and the little rainbow turns and turns and turns..... And because of that projects, I can't start any other project, and I can't go on any other project. That really freaks me out. PLEASE HELP ME!

    Try this:
    1. Quit iMovie
    2. Restart the Mac
    3. Repair permissions (open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder), select Macintosh HD and choose repair Permissions from the buttons displayed
    4. Move iMovie preferences (or trash them). They're at <your usenrame>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovieApp.pList (the name might vary slightly, depending, but will always start com.apple.iMovie...)
    5. Delete the iMovie cache (in <your username>/Library/Caches, called com.apple.iMovieApp or similar. Delete the whole folder
    6. Restart the Mac.
    Hopefully, that will fix it

  • IMovie '09 ~ Freezing

    Hello
I have recently been working on a small 10 minute Movie project.
i was on the verge of completing it almost last night, until i tried to add a small sound effect, at which point iMovie froze completely. Now each time i try to go back to that Project it freezes and I can't finish it.
The Project itself is made up of mostly photographs & audio clips and transitions, with 1 or 2 very short video clips.
I've tried quitting iMovie & re-opening and I've also restarted my Laptop and tried opening it again & nothing seems to work. I can though access my other projects of which I have one which is longer, just fine as usual.
Any help or assistance would be very appreciated. Thank You

    Hi and welcome
Either there is use of strange/alient material as .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
Or Your Mac is untidy (or stray errors = file coruptions) - very common to all of us.
    My list on this
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. *com.apple.iMovie.plist *
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    iMovie updated ?
    QuickTime updated ?
    Mac OS version ?
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.
    Lennart Thelander
I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

  • Clicking a title makes iMovie 6 freeze

I have iMovie 6.0.3 and am having troubles with it freezing. Awhile ago, I had problems with using Office, which turned out to be a font issue. I was able to fix it by clearing the font caches and removing duplicate fonts.
Now in iMovie, whenever I click on a title, I get my "bing" error sound and shortly after any other action is taken, the spinning beach ball of death, requiring me to force quit iMovie. If I don't click on a title (centered title, bouncing text, etc.) I am able to freely scroll around through the list, go to any other tab under the editing pane, but once I click on a title, it freezes. I'm not able to drag it into a location or click on "add" as it also causes it to freeze, and no preview window comes up in the viewer.
I'm assuming at this point it's another unresolved font issue. My font book tells me all my fonts are fine, no errors. There are no more duplicate fonts. So I'm left thinking there is some file iMovie is trying to read where it's attempting to locate the fonts that no longer exist -- or something along those lines. Well I cannot find such a file, and I've tried removing the preferences as well to no avail.
Is anyone able to shed some light on this? If nothing else explain to me how fonts work in conjunction with iMovie so I can try further trouble shooting?

Well, I managed to solve it. It was not a font issue.
What I did that fixed it was under iMovie, show package contents/PlugIns, I removed a plug in called title, opened iMovie, and it magically worked. Then I quit iMovie, replaced the plugin and restarted it. iMovie titles now work fine. If someone else has a problem like this, try removing other plug ins and then placing them back in the folder. I also removed the entire plugin folder at one point, which might have done something as well, I'm really not sure.
I can only think iMovie was trying to find the files for the titles in the wrong place. Why, I have no idea. But it works now. So yay!

  • HELP...iMovie keeps freezing...

How big is too big for a file on the old iMovie...I'm working on a Team Highlight Tape at a High School and the banquet is only a few days away...I have a 35 minute video complete with transitions, music, everything...It's fantastic, only now it wont play properly and keeps freezing up...Everything has been rendered as best as I know...
Is it simply too large of a file with videos and music??? (I do have 76GB available according to the bottom of the iMovie Folder)
    HELP...Thank You...

I have had a similar problem and found the skipping, jerky playback (images, not audio) happened only with certain downloaded audio tracks (there must be code or something embedded in some music, even if it is downloaded from iTunes; this happened consistently with the group Hapa). My cue that this was going to happen was the length of time it took to download a selection from my iTunes library. Most tracks take less than a minute - but Hapa, for instance, took 4 or more! The music would play fine, but my video was erratic. All I had to do was change the music and everything would work fine.

  • Every time I open my project iMovie 09 freezes

I just finished a 4-minute-long stop motion video that consists of .1 second clips and about 4 tracks of audio throughout. iMovie had been running slow while I was editing but I could tolerate it. I then went to add one more sound effect and then the whole program froze (that rainbow circle thing popped up and I couldn't click on any of the buttons). I had to manually shut down my laptop.
Now when I open iMovie my project comes up but as soon as I click on something it freezes again. Any suggestions on how to stop this?

I trashed the plist and reopened iMovie and it seemed to be running fine. I first clicked on another project of mine and it opened no problem. But then I tried opening the project that started this whole mess and once again the dreaded pinwheel showed up an in a matter of minutes a sign popped up saying "iMovie quit unexpectedly".
Please someone help! It took me hours of tedious editing and I'll probably die if I have to do it all over again.
