Imovie on Mac to Quicktime on PC

Sorry to repost, but just wanted to clarify my problem. My friend downloaded a movie we made and want to edit using iMovie on Mac. He saved them as quicktime files in full movie mode. I have the HD he saved them on, but QT on PC won't read them. Any solutions?
Rich

It sounds like a codec issue.
What codecs were used in the file? If you can open it on the PC (but not play it) the Movie Info window should show their choice of codec.
Any chance they used an "HD" codec or settings?

  • Is there a way to view the timecode in iMovie for Mac?

Is there a way to view the timecode in iMovie for Mac?  This is such a basic feature needed for editing; I can't believe it wouldn't be available.  Am I missing something?

Do the math means you know the timecode at the beginning of each clip and when you mouse over a transition or clip you know the clip length. If you trim the clip you see how much you are trimming. With these numbers you can caulate the cursor position or find the timecode value at any frame in the clip. I am not saying it is an elegant process by any means, but if you really need to, this will work. Obviously it is a grievius situation Apple has left us in regarding timecode.

    Frustration
Manufacturer: Apple (a multibillion dollar company)
    The year: 2015
    Hours lost: Three Weeks
Total costs for both devices: $4,000
    Background Details
I just wasted thousands of dollars on these two hardware devices by making the rookie mistake of assuming projects were compatible across iMovie applications. However, the exported .iMovieMobile project files are in an incompatible iMovie for iOS Project format that iMovie for Mac cannot import. So I am stuck with a 15 GB .iMovieMobile project file--for an hour-long+ video--that I created and I was editing on my iPhone for weeks that I can no longer edit on my iPhone due to an error, nor potentially rescue the lost hours on my Mac, the sole reason I purchased it one day ago. The reason I can no longer edit the project on the iPhone is because iMovie for iOS suddenly stopped displaying the video of the project in preview, external display, etc. The clip snapshots remain visible and the audio remains audible, but the video appears fully black. Any attempt to export the video at any resolution generates an error message. (This error applies only to this project; other projects export without issue.) I can save to and from iTunes or iCloud without issue, but import into iMovie for Mac is unavailable for this latest version. Deleting and reinstalling the app does not resolve the issue. Nothing has resolved this issue; so I purchased the Mac as a last attempt, and it appears that I will have to begin the meticulously painful process of recreating the video from scratch with all the titling, sound effects, precise edits, transitions, organization, etc. This video was to surprise my mother for her birthday with "this is your life" footage, including my late father. It may seem like a small first-world problem, but such things carry big emotional impacts. What began as such a wonderfully intuitive and joyful experience has descended into a soul-suffering nightmare of catastrophic proportions. This software grinch stole christmas.
    Likely Suspect
I believe this originated from Apple's confusingly designed iTunes client that removed videos used by iMovie for IOS during a sync, which I successfully restored back to the iPhone. This apparently resulted in iOS seeking and then claiming to find all of the videos, but somehow a bug in the coding causes the audio to play but not display video, and no way to resolve the bug from an enduser standpoint. I was hoping that iMovie for Mac would allow me a workaround, but I'll never know because the iOS and Mac formats are currently and dishearteningly incompatible.
    Suggestions
I never performed a full backup of the iPhone, but I don't believe any of the iCloud nor local backups actually backup iMovie projects themselves anyway. (That's a fail.) So one must back them up manually to iTunes or iCloud.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS DAILY, IF NOT HOURLY.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING OR SYNCING FROM ITUNES.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING VIDEO CREATED OUTSIDE  OF YOUR IOS DEVICE.
    Resolutions
Hope Apple fixes this problem soon? Perhaps.
Return the Mac to Apple, if they allow? Perhaps.
Someone in this community will provide a magical workaround--that I haven't already attempted? Perhaps.
As unlikely these options may be, I shudder to imagine that I may be forced to suffer no resolution and $3,000+ completely down the drain, because if iMovie for IOS worked as intended, I wouldn't have ever purchased the Mac as a last ditch effort to rescue the project. It meant that much to me to surprise my mother by attempting to retrieve this project file from oblivion--but to no avail.

I appreciate you taking the time to copy and paste boilerplate responses to increase your points in this forum, but I've already read all those support articles in depth; but you have barely read my post at all. Please don't guess a fix. Only someone with the latest versions of iMovie, iOS, iPhone, Yosemite, and MacBook Pro is qualified to troubleshoot this, because anyone would immediately see that the following option no longer exists:
Open iMovie on your Mac, and choose File > Import > iMovie for iOS Project.
Read my post before you reply: It clearly says in the title and within my post that I can neither export nor import through iTunes without receiving an error message. So your response neither solved my question nor helped me whatsoever.

  • What is the file structure for new iMovie for Mac?

Under the previous version of iMovie for Mac, iMovie stored my clips and finished projects in folders that I was able to create on my hard drive.  I have one folder named Events and another folder name Projects.  With the new version of iMovie for Mac (the one that came with OS X Mavericks), I see there now is a file named iMovie Library 2.imovielibrary on my hard drive.  Can someone explain how clips and projects are stored in the new iMovie versus the previous version of iMovie?  Is all my content now stored in the iMovie Library 2.imovielibrary folder?  The "date modified" on my previous Events and Projects folders shows 23 October, so it seems that the new iMovie no longer accesses those folders.  Sound correct?  Can I delete those old folders?  Thank you

Do you know why the file is named iMovie Library 2.imovielibrary?  Does the "2" imply there is another iMovie Library.imovielibrary file somewhere, without the "2"?  Can I rename the package file to iMovie Library.imovielibrary without the "2"?
I wouldn't rename any of the files that iMovie creates in the Finder. You're asking for trouble.
I think the reason for the "2" is that at some point iMovie encountered a folder already with that name.
Did you re-install iMovie version 10 or do anything else that may have been non-standard with your installation?

I would like to take my DVDs and somehow put them onto my Apple TV. I'm assuming the answer would be to create them in quicktime. I'm having trouble and have a bad feelilng this idea can't be done. • Best compression technique. iMovie HD 5 to QuickTime Pro to Web?

Hi, I'm a video novice I think. But can you please tell me the best way to reduce an 12GB 'iMovie HD 5 project', for web? I used to have a .Mac account where for some strange reason Apple could manage to get my movie compressed down to about 300k the .Mac Homepage? When I attempt to compress this 'iMovie project' myself and utilsing QuickTime Pro also, the smallest file size I get is about 50MB. This is even after saving as a QuickTime Streaming File at 56k.
    Many thanks,
    Christian Macey

    Welcome to the forum, Christian.
First, note that although the iMovie project may be 12 GB, that probably includes material that's not included in the exported movie. The size of the project may be irrelevant. It's the duration of the movie that counts.
The 312k movie sounds like the small reference movie that iMovie creates inside the project. It contains no video and audio of its own, just pointers to the files in the Media folder of the project. That's why it is so small. It cannot play the movie without your files being present. (So you can't send it to someone, inviting as that is.)
QuickTime offers many different codecs (compressors/decompressors) to compress a movie. The best codec today is the H.264 codec, first introduced with QuickTime 7. It delivers astonishingly good quality at a very low data rate. Note, however, that the person playing your movie must have QuickTime 7 installed on their computer.
The level of compression and movie dimension you want depends on your goal for the movie. In the Export (Share) dialog box, choose the QuickTime > Expert setting, then choose MPEG-4 from the top popUp menu and one of the pre-sets from the bottom popUp menu. The Option button lets you tweak any of those.
You will want to experiment with a small clip, not the whole project, for it takes a long time to compress a long project. (Note the checkbox to export just the selected clips in the Export dialog. Do that.)
When the test clip delivers the size/quality you want, that's the setting to use for the entire project.

  • IMovie import of DV Quicktime files

I am unable to import Quicktime DV files into iMovie, and keep getting a warning "unable to import etc..., Error unknown" Anyone have some suggestions.
iMac Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

What iMovie version did you use to make the .dv clip? ...iMovie 4 exported .mov , NOT .dv if the project had chapters (the file misleadingly had the .dv suffix).
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_5bugs.html#filesize
PAL users also need to remember other iMovie 4 oddities with the .dv clips it exported:
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovie4bugs.html#PAL-DVCPRO
Make sure the clip is the same video standard PAL/NTSC you use.
Make sure there is enough room on the iMovie project volue to import the clip.
If you are sure it is a real compatible .dv clip, you can use this shortcut to save time and HD space:
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#quick_DVimport
...but first make sure what the problem with the input clips is because using that shortcut to .mov files or other incompatible files produces unexpected errors.

Hi - No I don't know - But I supply my list of trouble shootings - May be You find help here - Else it needs more to be complete.
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • Why does iMovie file stutter after QuickTime upgrade from 6.5.2 to 7.1.3?

I have a fifteen minute iMovie project that played fine with
QT 6.5.2. About a year ago I upgraded to the, then, current QuickTime version - I think it was 7.0.1, or something - and this particular movie file began to playback erratically. A search of Discussions turned up the possibility that QT Version 7 did not work well with Panther. I deinstalled that version of QT and went back to 6.5.2 and the project again played back correctly and I have been happy until recently upgrading to the current version of QT (in order that songs and videos downloaded from iTunes Store will play, for one thing) hoping that the previous glitch might have been fixed. The same movie file that experienced the previous problem is again having fits. At this point in time it is difficult to re-install 6.5.2, nor do I really want to. Anybody have any suggestions on how to get this file to play correctly? Strangely, no other video files have been affected. They all play back correctly using QT 7.1.3 - the current version. What is it about that particular iMovie project?

Erratic playback — sometimes called stutter — can occur in iMovie projects. It tends to be caused by the number of audio clips. But sometimes it's caused by a particular song.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2597033#2597033
When it occurs because of a particular song, re-importing that song as described in that thread will usually fix the problem. Essentially, the fix involves using iTunes to burn the song onto a CD, then importing the CD AIFF file to the project.
