IMovie picture question

I am using iMovie 2011, and have many pictures to add to the movie, is there a way to expand the window that the pictures are in to select from and make the pictures bigger in size?  My eyes aren't as good as they should be.

You can change the size of pics in any photo editing software - I don't know of a way in iMovie (and have never used iMovie to make a slideshow; I use third party software for that). In any case, in general, please remember that you can easily make pictures smaller without any loss of quality; however, increasing the size will result in less than desirable results - they will become pixelated. Is there a way for future pictures to be taken in a higher resolution to begin with in your camera - that way, they'd be large to begin with and, as I said, it's easy to make them smaller.

LOL - I had the same problem.  Hidden in plain sight!  All I saw was Numeric, and thought "Duh! Of course it's numeric - it's a slider!"
I do think NI could do a much better job on this, perhaps with more informative labelling.  Slider Scaling or Scale Format might be better.  Also, since one can select the Digital Display by itself on the front panel, one should be taken directly to the digital display formatting when Properties is selected, instead of still having to change the dropdown. By selecting the digital display instaead of the slider, you're implying that you want to change its format only.

  • New to Mac iMovie HD Question?

I just purchased an imac G5 (coming from a PC) specifically to work with home movies & pictures of the family. That's what I did the most on a PC and it looked like the offering for Mac was much friendlier.
When I used the PC, I used either Windows Movie Maker or Adobe Premeire, one for a quick movie and the other for a more complex edit job. In either case, you would capture the hour DV and ,in some cases it would make clips, but it always allowed you to view the clip outside of the timeline and set key frames prior to inserting into the timelime. Does iMovie have this setting?
It looks like iMovie captures the footage as clips, then you can drag the clips into the timeline, then if you want to shorten the clip you can drag the mouse to shorten each clip. Seems for my home videos lots of editing is needed as the clips are usaully not exactly what I want. What I have usally done in the past is make a 4-5 minute video highlighting the 1-hr DV, then also attach the 1 hr raw footage to a DVD. Having to squeeze each clip to make it 4-5 minutes seems difficult. Maybe Final Cut Express is in order? or can iMovie HD do this?
Sorry for the long post and thanks for the help.

Hi Travis - welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the PC editing apps, but iMovie does not have the key-frame feature you refer to.
iMovie has more than one way to edit clips - either direct trimming (which you describe), or cropping, splitting etc using the play-head.
By changing Preferences you can import direct to the Timeline, or into the Clips Pane, and import as discrete clips, or without breaks.
For your purpose, I would import to the Clips Pane, then Option-Drag them to the Timeline or Clips Viewer. This will leave a duplicate set in the Clips Pane.
Now 'slash and burn' the clips on the timeline as much as you need to make your highlight mini-movie, add title etc, THEN drag the whole un-modified set of clips onto the timeline. You now have two movies in one. That can be made into a DVD as is.
If you want them SEPARATE, you could cut and paste the highlight movie to a new project.
    Hope that helps.

  • Interactive pictures question

If you look at the free iBook "Life on Earth" that's in the new textbook section of the bookstore, you will find that when you tap pictures or do a two finger spread, they enlarge to full screen mode. Is this some special widget that the publisher has or can you do this with iBooks Author's standard widgets? After a lot of searching on the internet, I discovered that you can get pictures to enlarge with a tap by selecting the picture and then in the Widget Inspector clicking the title selection under layout followed by clicking the Full screen only selection under Interactive. This essentially turns the selected picture into a one picture gallery to which you can add a caption if so desired. If you do this, the picture will enlarge to its full size when taped on your ipad. However, this does not do the two finger spread enlargement mentioned above. You can enlarge the image by spreading your fingers on the iPad screen, but as soon as you remove your fingers the picture pops back to it's original size on the page. In "Life on Earth" it will stay at its enlarged size when you remove your fingers.
And yes, I have looked at Publishing with iBooks Author, but have not been able to find anything about the question above.
    Thanks for any insight.

As KT said, it is a gallery widget, and thats how they work (2 finger launchs full screen)
single image with caption and "full screen only" selected, a tap lauches full screen and the 2 finger spread justs inlarges the whole page/image untill let go and it snaps back. (I have Accessibility off)
if single image not set to "full screen only", the 2 finger spread launches full screen (just like the gallery widget)

  • ARTWORK AND PICTURES QUESTION

I've been importing photos into my IPOD, but it seems everytime I bring in a new folder of pictures, it REPLACES the pictures I already have instead of just adding to them.
Also, I've been selecting all my music and clicking the Get Artwork button. But the artwork doesn't show up on most of the albums it claimed to be downloading.
    Appreciate the help,

As to the images: both versions of the Store page are showing a different version of the image to the one currently referenced in the feed; it can take some time for a new image to appear, and it's necessary for you to have given the new image a different filename or the Store (which caches the image) won't know it's updated.
The image in the feed does not appear when subscribing: you have to actually embed an image in each episode media file, as described here:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/coverart.html
The episodes: there are 17 episodes in the feed and these all appear when subscribing. The web page version of the Store page is showing the last 9 episodes. The Store page in iTunes is showing only two but claiming to show nine - this is a long-standing bug and there isn't really anything you can do except wait for it to sort itself out.
However the non-appearance of episodes 1-8 is more puzzling as the appear when subscribing and the feed appears to be OK (you shouldn't have multiple 'enclosure' tags but iTunes will ignore those which aren't playable media or PNG anyway). Did you originally have WordPress set to show only the last nine but then increased it? In any case it's probable that the Store will sort itself out, but it's a question of waiting until it does.

  • Deleting Original Pictures Question?

I just started using iPhoto. Prior to that I had all my pictures organized in folders by event. I imported all my pictures in iPhoto and almost everything was correct. For about 500 photos they dates we wrong causing the events to be out of order. I changed all the dates to the correct dates. I looked in the package contents on the iPhoto library file and noticed that there is a modified folder and an original folder. My question is relating to that... I compared the two folders and found that when I modified the date it created an entire new file in the modified folder... but it did not delete the original. I can understand keeping the original if you ever want to revert back or something... but all I did was change the date. I don't see the point in having two copies of the same picture, only with different dates.
Is there anyway to delete those originals without manually going through original directory and comparing the files to the modified directory???
    Thank in advance!

Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

  • Stationary/Background pictures question.

Hello, I just had a quick question. I am a new Mac user, I have always used a PC before, and I just bought a mac which I have had for about a week. Anyways, my question is... is there any way to put stationary/background pictures on the e-mail? I can't find any anywhere on my computer, and I just want to know if I am overlooking it or not, and if there isn't any stationary, is there a way to get some? Thanks.
As for the computer that I have, it is a Mac OS X Version 10.4.9, and the Processor is 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

I don't believe this is possible within Mac OS X Mail in Tiger but it will be in Leopard. You should check out some of Apple's iCards for now.

  • Profile Picture question

Ok sorry this is a noob question but for some reason I cannot remember how to enable this. When making a phone call I used to have my background as the wallpaper and the a small profile picture of the person I am calling on the upper right corner. How do I enable this?! Thanks in advanced!!

Photos added in a PIM program (like outlook or Address Book) will have the small picture in the upper corner. Photos added on the iPhone itself will appear full screen.

  • Picture In Picture question.

Hi, I'm new to iMovie and I am having an issue with Picture In Picture. I don't even know if I am using the right feature. Anyway, from my desktop, I am dragging a picture into my project and selecting Picture In Picture (I already have advanced mode on) and so far I am having an issue. When I try to crop/fit it, it is keeping to its aspect ratio, which is not right. I need a non cropped, non boxed image on my footage and no matter how much I explore the program or Google it, I can't find how to do it. Any help is appreciated!

YOu say you are not sure if you are using the right feature.
Use PIP if you want a small picture or video to be superimposed over your video while the video keeps running underneath.
Use CUTAWAY if you want the underlying video clip's audio to keep playing underneath while you substitute a different photo or video clip on top in full screen.
If you just want to add a photo to your project, just drag the photo in from the photo browser.

  • IMovie Trailer Question about Event

When I attempt to create a trailer I'm presented with a dialog box that asks me to create a title (no problem) and an event. I don't understand what event I should select. None of the media that I will use is in any of the listed events. I will be using photos from my iPhoto library.
Since I have to select an event I am at a standstill.
    Help!

    Hi C Nelson,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question. If you are having issues using the Trailer function in iMovie, you may find the following article and walkthough helpful:

  • IMovie export question

I am using Roxio video converter to take my old 8mm tapes into iMovie (10.0.6) and then into iDVD.  I have two questions.  I have read that you should change the video format to AIC for older versions of iMovie, is this still the best practice with the newer version?  All of my videos are SD, so when I share the file from iMovie, what quality should I select (high, medium....)?
    TIA

Is this movie comprised of video or still images?
    Matt
The movie is entirely video clips from our digital camera. Granted, they are not camcorder quality to begin with, but they do look great when played back in fullscreen mode in iMovie. Shouldn't I be able to get that same quality after I export the movie? Shouldn't it be simple to do?
A friend who works at Pixar saw the movie on DVD, and confirmed that he saw lots of "artifacts" from compression. He didn't have a solution, not being familiar with the software, but it seems to me there should be a way to export the movie uncompressed. I shouldn't be restricted to playing it only in iMovie on a Mac to see it the way it is meant to be seen, right?
(I guess my gripe with Apple is that this program is designed for amateurs making home videos, like me, but they seem to expect that we'd be satisfied with poor quality exports, rather than wanting our movies to look professional.)
    Thanks for all your help.

  • IMovie pictures blurry

I am currently working on a iMovie Project consisting of pictures. I scanned some of the pictures on to my computer and then imported them to iPhoto as well as importing some from other places. From there I created the iMovie. All of the pictures show up in great quality initially. It is only when I play the video that the scanned pictured become blurry. When I pause the video, it focuses again. (I have tried taking off ken burns effect as well as other special effects with no luck.) Help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

  • IMovie - quick questions about video files when importing and optimizing

Hi, have some quick questions. I think they are simple.
    1. When I import a video (from say iPhoto), where does it get "Move" or "Copy" to?
    2. Why would I want to do "Copy" instead of "Move", because isn't it then taking up more space?
    3. I'm wondering if after I optimize a video, I can stash away the original (non-optimized video that I either "Move"d or "Copy"d earlier) into an external hd.
    4. By the way, what is the new file name of the optimized video?
Though things are working fine in iMovie and iPhoto, I'm trying to manage hard disk space, and hope answers to these questions will help.
Do you guys have a guideline on how to manage hard disk space when it comes to iphoto and imovie?
    Thanks.

As has been suggested you can encourage people to download QuickTime player by doing something like this...
    http://www.mirroroftheuniverse.com/Songs.html
You can also present your songs like this...
    http://roddymckay.com/Satellite/JukeBox.html
This is a SnoCap jukebox and you need an account to use it but you'll get the link to ESnips on the above page.
A 3 minute song has a file size of about 30 Mb in AIFF format. Converting it to MP3 reduces it to about 3.5 Mb and M4A to about 5.5 Mb.
iTunes will do these conversions for you and M4A is far superior to MP3 as far as sound quality is concerned.

  • IMovie Version Questions

I've read with interest the issues regarding iMovie8 and regret just having purchsed a new iMac, primarily to upgrade from an old iMovie4 version. The inability to export back to tape (that was Apple tech advice for best means of storage!). Based on reading posts, iMovie6 addresses some issues, but I have two questions for those of you knowledgeable about this situation:
1-I read somewhere in the many chains that any version of iMovie past 4 (that I have) will no longer "pass through" analog signals from a camera (in my case Sony) and convert to digital: that is exactly what I've been doing over the last several years with older analog tapes (Hi8) of our kids. So, does this mean if I go even to iMovie6 I'll be unable to digitize video from those old tape? If so, I'm completely boxed in.
2-With older iMovie versions, the transfer back to tape has worked perfectly. But, with iMovie4, I find that as it goes back to tape on the camera, there are occasional "freezes"--the image stops for a fraction of a second or a second or two. And that freeze is on the tape version (even though the movie itself on the computer is fine. Has anyone had this issue with any version of iMovie that still allows transfer back to tape.
I'm feeling very abused...potentially unable to use old analog tapes with iMovie6, unable to transfer back with iMovie8, and the transfers are not working well with iMovie4. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks for your several responses. Based on your comments, iMovie6 should be ok for both analog pass through my Sony directly into iMovie, and to transfer back to tape. Others had indicated that the analog pass through was not operative after 4, but you're doing exactly what I'm asking about. Based on all comments I've read, neither analog pass through nor transfer back to tape will work in iMovie 8. I guess I'll proceed, and download iMovie6 as others seem to have done...although I've seen some issues with running 6 when 8 is on the computer. Thanks again.

  • IMovie novice questions

    Hello,
I'm using Quicktime Pro to create time-lapse sequences from still images. I'm trying to create the highest quality movie possible. Probably a widescreen format, and I've got some questions that I couldn't find any answers for.
    1. What is the largest (pixel X pixel) Quicktime movie I can import into iMovie? I tried 1600 X 900 and it squashed the image. 960 X 540 seemed to fit.
    2. Once I've created a Quicktime sequence what is done next. Do I "save", "save as", or "export." And if export is the answer, which file type?
    3. Once in iMovie what video format is recommended: DV, DV widescreen, HDV 1080i, ...?
4.Is there a tutorial or book that anyone can recommend. I've got the "Visual Quickstart Guide: iMovie HD6 & iDVD6", but I can't find the answers I'm looking for.
    Thank you

    Hi
To be able to use Your iM 5 movie project on Your "New" Mac You need iLife6 and
iMovie HD 6 that as far as I've read this forum should work OK.
In iMovie HD 6 You can have several movie project open simultaniously and from one
timeline copy over to a new open project. This without going via QuickTime Export/Import.
