IMovie Playback Choppy?

Hey,
I got my 15" rMBP about 2 weeks back, but recently tried creating a project on iMovie. I am currently using the base model and I realised that when I create a very movie using photos (10-12 photos) from my photo album, using the comic book theme, and try playing back as a preview (without exporting), the playback is very unacceptably choppy. This issue is not existent once exported.
Can those out there try it out and let me know if they experience the same thing? Would love to hear from the rMBP owners with DGPU too to determine if it's a GPU issue or just...an overall issue.
Thanks in advance!

HI Andrew,
I use iMovie all the time. The more transitions/audio/titles/effects you add, more larger the file and the more RAM it takes. You indicated you have 768mb of RAM. Anything less then 1GB and you will more then likely experience playback issues. Here are the minimum requirements for iMove HD 06:
System Requirements
The minimum requirements for iMovie HD 6 are:
- A Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4, G5, or Intel Core processor
- 256 MB of RAM; 512 MB recommended
- High definition video requires a 1 GHz G4 processor or faster and 512 MB of RAM
- Mac OS X 10.3.9 or Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later; Mac OS X 10.4.4 recommended
- Mac OS X 10.4.4 (or later) required for themes, real-time video effects, and audio effects
In order to use iMove in the most efficient manner, you need to upgrade to a faster Mac. I know the minimum requirements started above for RAM indicates 512MB recommended, by take a long time iMovie users word... 1GB of RAM and a faster Mac will solve your problems.

  • IMovie playback choppy, Processor activity abnormally high

I am having an issue with a single iMovie project. When I play it back, it's very choppy. Yet, other iMovies playback just fine.
When I view the CPU Usage when playing back the troubled iMovie, I get 0.00 or -0.00 % Idle. While playing other iMovies, % Idle is 35-45%. What is going on. Why is this one iMovie maxing out the processor. I have no other apps open.
I have played back much more processor intensive movies previously (or so I thought).
How can I fix this? Do I just need to get a faster computer???

  • Quicktime 7.5 causes jerky iMovie playback

When - oh when will Apple fix the "Jerky iMovie Playback Problem" caused by Quicktime 7.5?
I would love to see a response by somebody from the Apple Corporation, or are they
too busy with the iPhone and iPod?
    Hank

    Hiya,
and hello from London. Just a thought: you could post Apple feedback of the problems you got:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/feedback/
It might be an idea to put more technical feedback in there (e.g. open applications/utilities/console and see what happens, when QT IS actually jittery.:~/
Also compare that with what's happening in activity monitor (e.g. are the processors running unusually high, compared to other QT use? or is the memory low? or is harddrive space low?).
If this is a bug that needs fixing, by giving the technical data to apple, this can be used to issue a fix.

  • IMovie 4 playback choppy

I recently upgraded from 2 to 4, and it worked fine for the first few projects I put together. I am in the middle of a project and for no reason I can determine, I am having all sorts of trouble getting playback to work. It starts and the cursor tracks normally, but after 2 seconds the sound stops and the picture freezes. If I pause and restart the clip, it continues from wherever the cursor is at that point, but after 2 seconds the same thing happens. This happens with both raw clips and items in the timeline viewer. I have tried some of the ideas that were listed on a post a few days ago (repair permissions, etc) but that did not seem to solve the problem.
I have noticed that I have needed to restart after using iMovie 4 because all the other programs I may run seemed to be more sluggish after working in iMovie. I did export to QT what I had done. I don't know if that might cause this problem.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

but in my preferences folder it shows up as [com.apple.iMovie3.plist]
I know it sounds illogical, but that's normal. iMovie 4 uses "iMovie3" in its prefs file name.
Take a look at this description of a different playback problem. Here referred to as stutter. Although written for iMovie 5/6, it also applies to iMovie 4:

  • IMovie projects choppy with 23" display

I just added a 23" Cinema Display. I've noticed that the playback quality of my iMovie projects have become choppy since the monitor was installed. Audio also drops out in spots. (Actual video and audio is okay; problem only exists in playback.) Projects play fine on other computers. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, is there a solution?

You may want to set your iMovie Preferences, under their 'Playback' tab, to Standard, rather that High or Highest.
Cinema displays are designed to give the best possible visuals, but that can use up a lot of Mac processor effort, whereas you really want the effort to go into correctly grabbing all the relevant bits from your hard disc, both video and audio, and making do with 'acceptable' presentation on the monitor.
(..Though one would have thought that a dual processor 2GHz should be able to keep up with handling the video + audio files and being able to provide a good screen display..)
Karl may give some relevant advice, as he has a cinema display.
Maybe post this query with his name in the Topic, e.g; "Karl - 23" Cinema Display choppy", for example..?

  • IMovie Playback and import issues

OK. Been having issues with iMovie here lately. First it was the playback, very choppy and the video would freeze up (audio seemed unaffected) made it real hard to edit previous projects. This started after a QT update. I hit the boards and tried everything suggested by you good people.... still having issues. Now , just today I tried to import some footage to a new project and it imports 3 to 4 seconds of choppy video then simply stops importing all together. Could this really be a QT bug that Apple needs to fix?... because nothing I do seems to rectify the problems. Using iMovie HD, and a Panasonic miniDV cam (which I have been using to import for years now).

Apple have not acknowledged a problem with Quicktime 7.0.2 and OS 10.3 but they have provided a download to go back to 6.5.2.

  • Overlap Transition smooth on iMovie, but choppy on finished DVD disc

I've been using the overlap transition because of I find it very smooth and suttle. However, in the last film I made, the final product (after iDVD) produced choppy overlap transitions. I made several copies, and in each case, the same thing happened.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Ok, thank you Dave- that answers that about converting to PAL.
And lucky-YOU to live on the south coast of Dorset - I've seen beautiful photos of that part of England. Our family is in Dieppe and for years we've been meaning to take the boat across to New Haven. There's also a wonderful Saturday market in Dieppe that's very popular with the British tourists. I know it's not terribly close for you, but maybe you've been?
Good to know that car rentals are so reasonable in your area. We must do that next summer. Thanks!!
Back to the original topic of the flickering during the overlap transition, I re-burned another DVD. This time I changed to Best Quality and made sure the project info was set at 4gb instead of 8gb (each project is automatically pre-set for an 8gb disc and I have to manually change it - rather a pain, I find).
I again saved it as a disc image because I find this the best way to go back and make quick copies as I need them.
The flickering was still there in the same places.
It could be happening during the disc image saving process since it doesn't flicker during playback in iMovie or iDVD. I also noticed that it happens more when the length of the transition is quite short.
Anyway, I do appreciate everyone's input and time! It's just one of those THINGS!!
    Thank you,
    Lisette

  • Timeline Playback Choppy - Which Part of my Hardware is the source of the problem?

    Hello,
When I preview my videos using the preview frame in Premeire Pro CS5.5, I am experiencing choppy video playback. The preview starts out playing smoothly for approximately 3 seconds and then begins to go into choppy frames. Also, if it is relevant, I can play the videos perfectly fine on my computer without choppiness using any other player (i.e Windows Media Player).
The source video was taken on a GoPro Hero 3 camera and its properties are listed below:
    Type: Movie
    Video: 59.94 fps, 1920 x 1080 (1.0)
    Audio: 48000 Hz - 32-bit Float - Stereo
In order to make sure that I was not messing up the sequence settings, I begin all of my video projects by right clicking on the source video and selecting "New Sequence from Clip
So: Onto my question: I REALLY need this problem fixed and I don't know how to do so. Could someone please tell me if this is a software or hardware issue, and if it is a hardware issue, which part do I need to replace in order to resolve? Thank you. My computer specs are listed below. Keep in mind that my computer knowledge is probably considered only slightly above average.

Thanks again for the responses. This is something along the lines of what I was thinking. I didn't honestly review your suggestions yet John but I certainly will. Also, just to keep in mind,  in addition to video editing I need this to be a decent gaming machine.

  • IMovie playback on external monitor via FireWire?

this seems like a pretty obvious question, but is it possible to play back an iMovie timeline on an external monitor/TV? i'm connecting my Titanium laptop to a Sony DV camera via FireWire, then directly from the camera to my TV via mini-jack/RCA cable. this works fine in Final Cut Pro, but i can't seem to get my iMovie to show up on the TV. how do you get iMovie to playback output via FireWire?
    thanks.

In iMovie>Preferences>Playback do you have "Play DV project video through to DV camera" checked?
For your information: Checking that checkbox sends the audio to the DV camera INSTEAD of to the Mac's speakers, so if you disconnect the camera, you will have no audio.

  • Recording from Internal ISight interupted during IMovie Playback

I record and edit a daily blog (5-6 minutes long) on IMovie 7.1.1 from my internal ISight which i eventually share/post on YouTube. I have over 100 blog postings and all the recordings has always worked well. My last 5 recordings (all at different times)have come out choppy. The audio and video get interrupted numerous times (usually between 5-15 seconds apart) as if there is a sudden break/jump in recording. The recording location and techniques are the same as they always were. It has nothing to do with the editing -- this is the actual raw footage from the ISIght recording. I do this for my business, and it really is an issue if my ISight/IMovie has a problem. Please someone advise

Taking Pictures are not a problem. S Photo Booth works. In fact, IMovie records. The problem is the slight interruption every 5-15 seconds in the recording

  • Why do my PNG QT clips playback choppy?

I am working on a 3D animation using Blender as the 3D tool, and FC Studio as my editing tool. I render frame stacks from Blender, and Open Sequence with QuickTime Pro, then save those as clips to be used in Final Cut.
I have Blender render each frame as PNG, and thought I'd do a PNG workflow, so I exported from Quicktime as PNG, millions, 24fps. but when I play them back, they are hesitant, and choppy.
Previously, my workflow was the same, only Lightwave3D was my 3D app, and I saved my frames as PSD, imported to QT Pro, then Saved out as Planar RGB. Everything was smooth as could be, even on much less powerful hardware than I have now.
Can anyone say why the PNG clips play so unsmoothly? Is a PNG workflow not a good idea? I selected it because it's lossless, and makes small clips (file size)
my size is 852px x 480 px...certainly WELL within the capabilities of this Mac Pro.
    Thanks for any clues!
    r

    Tom Wolsky wrote:
852 (actually it should be 853 by Apple's calculations)x480 is square pixel 720x480. 720x480 is the same as 853x480 using the correct video pixel aspect ratio.
PNG is a stills codec, it's not a native codec used in video production. Check the FCP sequence presets and you'll a complete list of the native video formats FCP supports.
Alright..I think I'm getting close to epiphany here..thanks for hangin' in with me.
Just to be clear, my 3D out put is square pixels...this is a square pixel workflow from beginning to end. so if I keep everything 853 x 480, and use one of the FCP Presets, then I ought to get smooth playback, not only in FC Studio, but also in Quicktime Player?
    Thanks!

  • Imovie 09 choppiness, won;t play transitions in full screen

Hey all...so I did a couple of music videos in 08 and never had any issues with anything. With 09, I find that I'm getting choppiness, especially after adding in some slow Mo which seems to effect the clip before the one you have treated. Also, I added a transition between 2 clips and when in full screen mode it won't play it, so the whole program seems kind of buggy to me.
anyone with any ideas? If i upgrade from 1 gig of RAM to 2 might this help the situation out, or is imovie 09 still working out the kinks? thanks

ok I don't know what this is about, but when I play the SWF
in the Flash Player (not in the HTML) and the full screen is set,
    it gives me this error:
ReferenceError: Error #1056: Cannot create property
    testimonial_video on flash.display.Stage.
I have scenes in this, once it plays one section of the show,
it moves to the next scene that plays that section of the
presentation. the testimonial_video is the first flvPlayback that
is on the stage in the sequence. I even tried adding an empty
flvPlayback on the first scene, and got no error... then it runs
into an intro scene, then the Testimonial scene where I get this
error.. any idea why I get that?

  • Older mov clips playback choppy in Premiere CC 2014

Revisiting an old project (two years or so) and much of my footage is playing back choppy in Premiere.
It is some clips but not all. I played with sequence frame rates to see if there was a mis-match but nothing helped.
I'm noticing it happen in quicktime itself, could it be that the older clips ar not good anymore? Do they have a shelf life?
    Any workarounds or solutions?

  • Imovie runs choppy after 10.6.5 software update

    Hi all,
I've been running Imovie HD on a MacBook Pro ever since I got it this fall for college. It has performed exceptionally thus far, up until this afternoon. I downloaded the latest software update, and now when I play project files, or watch video clips they run choppy as if the processor or video card or whatever is cutting frames to keep up with the playhead. Any idea of why this would be? A 2.4Ghz intel duo and 4 GB of ram should be more than enough to handle an Imovie file of a couple gigabytes right? It has up unto this point at least, and I'm very ticked that my favorite program is now running slow, and it makes me now want to use it.
I tried everything from restarts to disk repairs by Apple Jack, but nothing but setting the video rendering to the lowest quality or whatever smooths out the videos when I play them, and up until today I was able to glide through them at the highest quality.
    Help please?

    Hi
First thing that runs to mind is
    • Free space on start-up hard disk. How Much ?
    • Movies with lot's of audio clips eg > 50 use to stutter - medicine is to mix down
audio to one Audio-clip and it'll run smooth again.
    Else
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time

From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • Annoying Sound on iMovie Playback

When playing back an iMovie made with the built in iSight camera on my MacBook the playback has an annoying ringing sound on it. This occurs with all of the iMovie videos I've made (All five of them! ). I have not downloaded any iMovie videos from any other source. The sound is regular and consistent.
I do not hear this ringing on my iMac or on my relative's MacBook.
    Any ideas?

i created several movies in ilife08....and was able to hear the audio on both the event and project libraries. then today i upgraded to leopard.. and i can't hear the audio on these same events and projects. i can see that sound is playing - and when i share on youtube - there is audio..
    i just can't hear it.
i've checked the obvious - like the mute... but can't seem to figure out whats wrong.
thanks for your time. - paula
