IMovie playbackand share chews the movie...

I'm experiencing a strange problem with my iMovie 6.0.2. When I open a film or start a new project, iMovie chews on the movie. I mean it doesn't play with flow, but jumps from frame to frame, skiping some frames. How can I correct this problem? Help, please!

iMovie'11 (v.9.0.x) - Share to Media Browser and as MEDIUM (other resolutions gives less quality on the DVD)
in iDVD open MEDIA / Video(movies) - and here select it (Button down to the right in iDVD)
iMovie'13 (v.10.0.x) - Save to file - AND HERE it must be - 480p (as other also give less quality - or doesn't even work)
in iDVD - IMPORT (or drag and drop) Your movie file (I save it onto DeskTop to be easy to find)

The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
Can anyone please help me.

Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.

Does Imovie stabilization option downsize the movies ?

i imported a vid from cam in 1080p
Then, i applied stabilization to it. When doing so, i noticed the image in the preview is slightly zoomed in.
Then i export it in 720p through quicktime with mp4 (data rate:7200kbs)
I did the same in 1080p through quicktime. (data rate 16200kbs)
i didn't notice the difference between my two exports.
So do you think Stabilization actually "downsized" the master ?

Yes, stabilization works by zooming into a portion of the video and turning it to keep the image horizontal, and eliminating the movement. If it didn't zoom into the picture, you would get borders and missing parts at the edge of the picture as the image was being rotated slightly.
I can't quite remember, but I believe there is an option in the preferences somewhere, where you can specify the maximum limit of zoom you are willing to accept.

TS3356 I have compiled my movie and I downloaded it into iphoto. I then transfered it to imovie. The movie shows fine, but when trying to export it to facebook, the share menu does not highlight. Any help would be appreciated.

You may be attempting to Share (export) the movie from the Event Library. You need to create a Project, drag clips (or segments of clips) from the Event to the Project, then use the Share menu to export the Project. Movie clips can't be exported directly from the Event. Clips you add to a Project reference (point to) the clips in the associated Event (or Events).

Check in your Applications folder to see if you have the iDVD application there?
Do you have a new Mac that came with Lion preinstalled? If so you won't have iDVD nor iWeb. Apple has discontinued iDVD and iWeb and is no longer selling them.
In that case you'll have to purchase the boxed iLife 11 disc from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: iLife 11.
Also it's best to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu opiton in iMovie and then add the movie from the Media Browser in iDVD to the iDVD project. It provides a better qualtiy movie to iDVD.
Also follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

IMovie'11 doesn't read movies in external HD in Aperture

I made a lot of movies with my two GoPro cameras. One is the Hero and the other Hero2. Since My MBP was full I had to move all my data from my Aperture library from the local HD to an etxternal HD. It took some time for iMovie to recognize my database in the external HD but finally it did. When iMovie made all the nescessary clips I was ready to start editing and making movies. I edited all my videos and maked them as "Favorites" which help me be more efficient. I made a movie trailer with iMovie, modified it several times and published it. After all, I close my MBP and rested. But now I want to do more videos and iMovie won't show the movie clips in the "Event Library", not even the "Favorites" ones. It only show the old movies I made before with also the Hero1. Also, if I go back to my movie trailer Project, I can edit it since it links it to the movie clips it came from. If I disconnect the external HD it won't. But I doesn't show the movie clips in the event library. I have tried several tricks such as disconect the HD turn the MBP off and turned it back on and connect the HD again. It work the first time, but nt anymore. Now I am stuck!. Please help!.

I am using iMovie 11 with a Panasonic, but many people here use Sony. Virtually all Sony's made since 2007 will work in iMovie 11.

I made a video of our summer vacation on imovie. It's over an hour long. When I try to share it, the audio syncs incorrectly at about the 15 minute mark and is off for the rest of the movie. Is there a way to fix this? I think I have imovie 09.

If you think getting your web pages to appear OK in all the major browsers is tricky then dealing with email clients is way worse. There are so many of them.
If you want to bulk email yourself, there are apps for it and their templates will work in most cases...

Is the clip only in your Event Library in iMovie?
You need to create a Project (File > New Project).
Then move the clip into the project, do any edits and you should be able to Share your Project to Media Browser.

TS2289 Audio in iMovie 11 files but missing in sections when shared to iDVD. The movie and audio plays fine in iMovie but my burned iDVD movie is missing some audio .

I imported a movie into iMovie 11 from a Canon Vixia HFR 300 SD card with no problem. I have a new iMac running OsX 18.8.4 I think. I added chapter markers and shared it with iDVD. And burned it to a DVD. Towards the end of this 30 minute movie the sound just stops. I do remember some screen came up when I wanted to burn DVD that said something was wrong with files but I couldn't figure what do to fix it and allowed me to continue. Any ideas?

Either the problem is in iMovie or in iDVD
two notes
No Audio in iMovie
Most common origin is use of audio from iTunes.
Work around -
• Select needed audio to one new playlist
• Copy out this as an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
• Use this in the movie-project
Other origins are
1. strange / alient file formats as -
• .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
• Convert them into .aiff 48kHz 16-bit and use this
2. the Mac is set wrongly in regard of midi -
• Close iMovie and other programs
• Start GarageBand
• Make a new GB-project and play some notes
• Close GB and Save
• Now try iMovie again
3. No audio when playback in iMovie 1 to HD 6.
a. in iMovie pref. - deselect ” Playback via Camera”
b. in System preferences - see that Audio out is not set to zero. Mine often does this
without me knowing why.
4. iMovie’08 & 09 & 11
• Toggle audio-scimming by cmd-K
Stuttering audio and video
1. FileVault is ON - Turn it off
2. More than 50 audio files in a movie-project
Mix down to one audio clip
3. Project is stored on one (USB) external hard disk - should be a FireWire one
4. the External hard disk is not Mac OS Extended formatted - but
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange and this will not work for Video.
5. To little free space on internal boot hard disk.
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space when project is imported and edited and this goes for
4x3 SD Video. For 16x9 HD my guess would be about 5 times more at least.
Neither Mac OS, iMovie or iDVD can address any other hard disk than the boot drive for it’s
scratch files. (Unlike Final Cut Express/Pro where You select scratch disk/s)
6. Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
No audio on DVD disc.

• In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)

Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
Before burning the DVD.
• Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
• Double click on the .img file
• Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
• In iDVD 08 - or - 09
• Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
•OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

With iMovie 10 how do I change the movie file size and type.

I have recently upgraded to iMovie 10. It takes some getting used to but I think I will like the new product. After creating my first few movies and trying to upload them to dropbox, it is taking a long time. Comparing the files to ones created in the previous version they are larger, and I need to know how we adjust the file size to the device the movies will be used for. I don't need high resolution files. It looks like you can change the size in file for share but still a large file and only compatible with Mac and PC others are greyed out. Files are much larger than the files generated in the old version.

This is one of the areas where the options have been reduced compared to iMovie 9. If you share to File, you should have Large (540p) and SD (480p) options in addition to the HD ones.
I'm not sure exactly which menu it is where you are finding greyed-out options.
What is the native format of the movie you are saving?
If you can't share directly into the format you want you should be able to post-process the shared file with a third-party app.

I just got my MacBook last week so imovie is brand new to me and I'm only use to using Windows Movie Maker. Anyways I'm just trying to figure out how I save a video when I'm finished editing it? I finally realized how to trim the clips I want and get rid of the one's I don't but I can't for the life of me save the video when I'm done? Please help, the only thing that I can do to get them is to finalize it which takes forever and I keep forgetting how to do it.

Imovie'08 or 09 or 11 - was a totally new product with a new concept.
It stores Event and Projects by it self.
To get Your movie out - then use Share on top Menu list.
If You want a DVD then - I don't use Share to iDVD - but Share to Media Browser
and the big and large size. Then in iDVD open it's Media Browser and use the movie here.

I have been trying to create a movie from a project that is primarily stills and one video clip. I cannot successfully create the movie without iMovie shutting down unexpectedly. Any ideas for the cause of the problem?

I am getting an unexpected shut down of iMovie when I try to share a movie from a project that is made up of still pictures, one video clip and music. Have tried to create the movie several times with different formats and continue to get the message. When I removed all music I was able to create the movie without a problem but when I added the music back, I was unable to create the movie. I'm using iMoive 11' version 9.0.9

I'm no expert in iMovie, but I've found that processing memory (as well as sheer hard disk space for the project to 'turn around in') can be a big issue with constructing, editing, and distilling projects in iMovie. I've improved the success by moving 2gb of image files off to an external drive, but only really got moving again on an hour-long project by doubling RAM and again freeing up h/d space.
Some tunes are also an issue, but if you can see it in the iTunes list to place in your project, it should work okay... Does the project run with any other piece of music, or does just that one tune mess it up?

I am trying to burn DVD of the movie I have taken using a Canon and/or aSony video camera. I brought in the movie in iMovie. Enhanced the movie adding titles and various transitions and completed the project. Now how do I make a or several DVD of the movie using iDVD? please help.

You can either share it directly to iDVD by choosing Share > iDVD or you can export it using your favorite preferred settings by choosing Export to Quicktime. With the former method, iDVD will open automatically, with the latter method, open iDVD and drag in your movie. With both: choose a theme for your menu (what people will see when the DVD first starts playing) - you should play around a little to learn how to use iDVD. In any case, when done, you can burn directly from iDVD.

IMovie '08 - Skipping to Parts of the Movie and Playing It

I am having trouble figuring out how to fast forward to a part, sto there and play it. I hate having to watch the movie from the beginning just to get to that one part. Please Help, please and thank you.

Create a GarageBand iPod project. Drop your completed iMovie '08 project file to the GarageBand iPod/Movie track and confirm replacement. Double-click on movie track to open the chaptering window. Add chapter markers by moving the playhead to a point you want to chapter and "insert" the marker. When done, share/export the project to/for desired purpose.

How to share a full movie in iMovie?

I have created a screen/audio recording for a project using Quicktime. Once I imported the file into iMovie 10.0.6, I cut out all the bits and pieces I didn't need. When I go to share the movie to Youtube, as a file, or into the theatre, it only includes a portion of the movie clip, not the entire movie. I have tried highlighting all the clips, and then clicking share- it doesn't work- there is no follow up action.
Any suggestions? The interface of the program has changed since I last used iMovie, so I am at a loss for what to do without a 'Finalize' option.

The first time I shared the movie, it only contained the first 9 second clip of the entire video, which is 16 minutes and 3 seconds in length. After checking, I saw that only the first clip was highlighted in yellow. So I tried to highlight all the clips, clicked share, and nothing happened. It wouldn't let me select it as an option. I tried clicking outside of the clips- so that none of them were highlighted- and it only converted a portion of the clip into a movie again.
The bottom line, I need all of this video grouped together to I can turn it into an actual movie.
Based on the layout of iMovie, do I have to have a different section/window/editor open?
