IMovie Plugin Counter?

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me if there is an iMovie HD 6 Plugin that would allow me to display a real time counter on my video (e.g. like the counters you see on comedy shows when people repeatedly do something daft - the counter counts in real time each time they do it). I hope this is clear.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Best regards,
Adam

..hmm, well? considered, to use a 'title'? iM will not notice automatically the 'slip on the banana', so you HAVE to add the number manually.. which is a kind of 'title' ..
if you don't like the look of iM's presets, have a look at the usual suspects:

  • How do I install imovie plugins?

Do I just drag them into the imovie plugins folder?
And how do I access them? ie will they appear in the imovie Titles/Transitions/Video Effects tabs?

    Yes ..and Yes.
(..But some Plugins arrive as compressed files (possibly with the suffix .dmg or .tar or .gz or somesuch), which should automatically un-compress themselves, and it's the resultant uncompressed item which needs to go into the iMovie Plugins folder. Occasionally, the compressed files don't automatically uncompress themselves, so you may need to double-click on the file to start the un-compression routine. Additionally; some - well-written - plugins automatically do drop themselves into the iMovie Plugins folder by themselves ..others have to be manually dragged there. If you see something with an arrow which seems to be saying "drop me in the iMovie Plugins folder", then drop it there manually.)
HOWEVER, be aware that (a) some iMovie Plugins which were created for earlier versions of iMovie may not work correctly with iMovie HD 6; and (b) iMovie Plugins written for 'PowerPC' processors - previous to Macs moving to Intel processors - may force your Mac to run iMovie via the 'Rosetta' PowerPC emulator, instead of running it as a proper Intel application.
    These two considerations mean that..
    (a) some 3rd party plugins may not work properly (written for a previous iMovie version)
    (b) some 3rd party plugins may not work properly (written for PowerPC processors, instead of being the latest 'Universal' plugins which work with both PowerPC and Intel processors).
So as long as you were careful to download only plugins which say that they work with iMovie 6 (..or "iLife '06"..) and are 'Universal' and therefore work with Intel processors ..then everything should be OK.
Even if your plugins are not Universal, if they're for iMovie 6 they should work, but iMovie may run a bit slower, because instead of the Intel version starting up, the PowerPC version may start, and ought to run under the 'Rosetta' PowerPC emulator. (No message will appear to say that it's running under Rosetta: the process is "invisible".)
    Phew!
In all probability everything will be fine, but if it's not, either (a) or (b) above (..or both!..) may be the reason why not!

  • IMovie plugins + question about a transition

I heard that Apple has some free iMovie plugins that you can download but I don't know where they are. Does anybody know where?
There is a transition that I have seen used where the scenes you can see one scene through another. If you want to see it go here
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INx1baOQH_k
The exact place where it happens is at 1:45. I know that the scenes are slowed down and it looks like a cross dissolve, but when I tried it, it didn't work. Anybody know what was done?
Oh, and in case you're wondering, no I haven't been able to contact the guy who made the video, otherwise I would've asked him already.

    X_Adagio4389,
The free plugins that Apple offered was some time ago. I think most of them have long since been incorporated into iMovie.
As for your other question, it looks like what you're trying to do is not so much a transition as it is the layering of one video image over another.
One way to do this is with QuickTime Pro. For a serious iMovie user, it's a useful tool. Kind of a Swiss Army knife for video.
Use Edit>Add to Selection & Scale to add the second video layer. Then open Window>Show Movie Properties. Select the second video track and click Visual Settings.
Select Blend from the transparency drop down menu and adjust the level of transparency to your liking.
Export the completed effect to DV Stream and then import that to your iMovie project.
I know my directions are a bit brief. Post back if you have questions.

  • Will 'old' PowerPC iMovie plugins work on an Intel Mac

If I have 3rd party iMovie plugins which were made for OS 10.3 etc, I was wondering if these would work on an Intel based Mac (which I'm thinking of buying).
Does anyone know if new versions must be made with universal binaries? Or if the PowerPC translator thing will sort it out.
I'm posting this to the iMovie 6 forum as Intel Macs won't run anything else.
    Stuart

I don't think so. I had some Slick transitions and effects installed on my 10.3 machine, and migrating them to my new iMac Intel caused iMovie HD to load with error messages concerning the plug-ins. Once I removed them, the application worked just fine, so my conclusion is that the older versions are not compatible with the new Intel-based machine.

  • How to use iMovie plugins?

I have recently started working with iMovie, and would like to use a special effects plugin to add "magic effects". I followed instructions to add the plugin i downloaded to the Plugin folder for iMovie, but how do i edit with the effects? I have a MacBook Air latest version and I would like to use the plugin in iMovie, because it is supposed to be comparable- and yes it works with the version I have. What do i click on to access the effects plugin while using iMovie? please help.

Here are a couple of good places to start:

Also, if you have the app open, go to Help in the file menu and click on iMovie help.

  • Open iMovie PlugIns

I just downloaded a couple of SlickSampler plugins. One is a dmg.bin file, the other is a img.bin file. I've read somewhere that Safari will open these after the download is complete, but I have already downloaded them with Camino.
How do I open these files to access the plugins?

.. Double clicking the files kept launching Excel..
    wowy? strrrange ...
when you select a file in Finder, hit Apple-I, you can set with what app such a type of file should be opened with..
to tell Excel to open .bin is a little ... 'exotic' ...
allthough, Excel is such a nice guy, have a look here:

  • IMovie 6 plugins

Hmm im having trouble finding plugins for iMovie HD 6, and especially for intel. I have looked around and there are a myriad of plugins for different, older versions. Im looking specifically for a blue screen plugin and/or one that will be good for a video montage. If anyone could be of some help, I'd really appreciate it!

Am I to understand that none of the iMovie plugins will work on my Intel iMac? Here are the messages when opening a movie in iMovie '06:
Incompatible Plugin – The plugin "Toast Video CD Export.bundle" cannot be loaded because it isn't designed to run on this computer. If you don't need this plugin, remove it from our plugin folder (in Library>iMovie)

Is any help coming for this soon? Guess that is why I'm upgrading my FCE to native binary. Running in Rosetta is not a viable option to me.

  • A suggestion for frustrated iMovie 8 users

Well, now that I've had a chance to play around with it for a few days, I have a few comments that MAY be helpful.
For those of us who have an investment in third party iMovie plugins, and love working with the timeline, yes we can still use iMovie 06, but any transitions, titles, etc, get lost if we import the project into 08 to take advantage of some of those features like cropping.
The answer is, of course, to export the project as an HD Quicktime movie, then import THAT into iMovie 08. All your transitions etc will stay intact.
Once that is done, you can re-export if you want to send it back to 06 if you want to put in chapter markers or use other nice features.
    -=-Ron-=-

Respectfully - that sounds like a lot of importing and exporting between two DIFFERENT programs - again iMovie 8 is a complete rewrite - so why does anyone expect them to be compatible anyway? Fact is they really are not. I have used iMovie since it's inception.... iMovie 8 in MY OPINION is not iMovie - it's like this weird crossbreed between windows movie faker and iphoto. Why do I want all my previously shot video to appear... everytime I open imovie???? Do you have any idea how much video is on my 500GB hard drive? Maybe there is some I don't want popping up.... So really this is a silly " feature" If decide I want to add an old clip - we could always do this anyway - drag and drop - it is in now. Simple.
I have made up my own easy solution here: I will just stick with using iMovie 6. I have ALL the Gee three plug ins which is like iMovie on steroids or something like that... and 8 does not support any 3rd party plug ins????? No export back to DV tape on my camera - How do you remove that???? iMovie 8 should of been called something else - it is something else. I have no use for it -
I also would like to add to the person who commented below that a professional video person wouldn't even look at iMovie. WRONG - the beauty of iMovie is the simplistic timeline - cut cut cut - clip clip - my first raw edit is always done in iMovie, ( it is at least 40X faster then doing this in FCP) then once I have culled my footage to the best of the best - I use plug ins NOT available in FCP or other high end video editing programs - with the Gee three plug ins I can add Zooms - spins - wild FX quick = cheap - then I take the project into FCP for completion. iMovie is a HUGE time saver for professional video editiors - LOTS of us use it.

  • Working with clips in  iMovie 4

Is it possible rotate a short clip that a new camera man shot sideways? He thought the subject fit better in the view finder on its side!

    Hi Chuckey:
You can use QuickTime Pro: Movie / Get Movie Properties / Video Track/Size and then use rotate buttons. Or you can

  • How to make PlugIns work?

    Hi...
I've now downloaded demo plugins from eZedia (I guess to entice me to buy their Software package) and something from Download dot come called iMovie Plugin Pack 2.1.1.
There sitting in Home library > iMovie > Plug-ins...
How do I get at them? I don't see them as option in my iMovie transition area (like Photobooth has a special place for new items).
And any suggestions on what's good to add to iMovie?
    Thank you in advance,
any comments, suggestions and opinions are welcome....

Yes, you can make a project in PulpMotion, export it using the "export to iMovie" option within the Aquafadas program, save it to your desktop or whatever, and then import the file to an iMovie event. I just finished an iMovie project that included segments that were created in PulpMotion Advanced, iStopMotion, 3D Timeline, and KeyNote. These are not "plug-ins" for iMovie, like the ones that Slick or Sugar make (which are super cool and can be used with iMovie HD)...but they are, rather, programs that let you make files that can be imported and then edited in iMovie (like your video clips).
    Have fun with your project!

  • Can I rotate photos in iMovie 6 ?

I am making a slide show for my daughter. I need to rotate some of the photos. Can I do that in iMovie 6 ? That seems like a resonable request of such a nice program. It is easy to do in Vegas Studio, and even Premiere Elements. I looked everywhere and cannot find out how to do it. Thanks very much for you help. Roger

Hi Roger - The company GeeThree has an iMovie plugin as part of a package, that will do that rotation for you:
    http://www.geethree.com/slick/index.html
    But there are other ways.
They can be rotated and saved in iPhoto, and in Preview. If they still refuse to import correctly, what I do is to make a very minor adjustment of some aspect of the photo in Photoshop, save and re-import. The correct orientation always remains fixed after that.

  • Can I use iPhoto transitions in iMovie

I noticed that there are some transitions for a slideshow in iPhoto that are not used in iMovie. For example; cube, droplet, mosiac. Is there any way to get them into iMovie?
    Macbook Pro

    Hello Jim,
sorry, but that's not possible. you have however two options that should get you where you want:
    1. make slideshow in iPhoto and then export to QT to be then used in iMovie
    2. get a third party plugin to make transitions that even iPhoto doesn't have. just goooogle "iMovie Plugins" and you'll find a ton - there's even free stuff.
    hope this helps

  • Green Screen on iMovie

i am wondering if there is a green screen or blue screen effect on iMovie HD 6 or on Final Cut Express HD

Honestly, step by step instructions are not easy to give.
In the link I provided, I know there is at least one tutorial for green screen in FinalCut Pro. The steps would be roughly the same for Express. But it's complicated.
A simpler approach would be to save up and buy an iMovie plugin.
Have you already shot your green screen footage?

  • Chroma Key--iMovie w/3rd party vs. FCP vs. FCE

Apple's pro audio and video tech support department can't seem to answer this question and they thought someone here in the FCP forum might be able to give me some guidance.
I'm an independent trainer and I've been trying to put a "simple" head and shoulders shot of me in a nice backdrop using iMovie HD and various 3rd party green screen / Chroma Key plug ins. The results have been disappointing. I evenly lit a green background (a piece of green fabric), shot the video, and adjusted the tolerances. The background dropped out ok, but so did tiny bits of me, and the green was still visible along the edges of me. Any further adjustments would make me transparent. I know it may be a lighting issue (or the fact that I'm using a generic green cloth background), but I'm a fine art photographer as well and I'm being pretty careful about the lights.
Are there any pros who do Chroma Keying who can tell me if buying FCE or FCP will solve this problem? Does FCE have a dramatically improved way to accomplish this green screen thing or is it likely using the same math as the iMovie 3rd party plug-ins?
Really, I'm hoping that FCE will have the same features in this area, since FCP is out of my range right now and hard to justify since I only want to do this one thing.
If I buy FCE, will I be missing some project-critical Chroma Key features only found in FCP that will force me to upgrade or are the features in this category identical?
For example, a tutorial on Chroma Keys for the Pro version says that it has a Chroma Smoothing 4:1:1 filter that might help when using mini-dv cameras.
Any thoughts on this from people who understand both versions of Final Cut and get good Chroma Keys would be greatly appreciated. Any other approches or software to get this done would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bob - this is a copy of the answer I sent you in the FCE Forum.
I have never used iMovie for Chromakey as I believe that once you start buying third party filters etc. you can soon end up paying as much as if you had bought FCE outright!
FCE has numerous additional features (besides the Smoothing Filter) for fine-tuning the picture to get rid of colour fringing and other extraneous nasties. I would imagine that iMovie plugins would not have as many - though I do not know that for a fact.
As Tom says FCE and FCP are virtually identical in most respects. FCP's main differences are connected with the way professionals work - like feeding video from several cameras simultaneously etc. Most of us can manage without that!
    Ian.

  • IMovie 6 Transitions??

I just upgraded from iMovie HD 5 to 6. I thought from looking through the Apple store that iMovie 6 had added several transitions... where are they? Does anyone know of any companies that make transitions for iMovie 6? I can find a bunch for iMovie 2 and 3.

    billbain,
Here are a couple of sources for additional iMovie plugins including titles, transitions and effects.
    http://www.geethree.com/
    http://www.imovieplugins.com/
I'm not aware of transitions in iMovie HD 6, that weren't there in iMovie HD 5.
Billow, Disintegrate and Ripple I think were introduced in iMovie HD 5.
