Imovie precision editor

I have just started using imovie.
I watched the video tutorials
I am trying to access the "precision editor" as shown in video 5 on the imovie tutorials page.
It doesn't seem to be available
Can anyone help?
Thanks
julian

To use the Precision Editor in iMovie 08:
1) It is context sensitive, so you must have started a project, and you must have dragged one or more clips into the project.
2) Click on one of the clips in the project to select it. Now right-click (or control-click) on the clip, and select "Trim...".
3) The Precision Editor will pop up. You can make your edit, and then click "Done".
For step 2, you can also use Edit/Trim... from the menu. Alternatively, you can hold down the command key and press R

  • IMovie won't display precision editor

I had been using iMovie 10.0.04 and clicked on a command that caused the video downloaded files to go to the bottom half of the screen and the viewer to go to the top. I tried to open the precision editor and the command is inactive (gray not bold black). How do I get back to the precision editor?

Re-formatting should take care of it!
Connect the external drive and then launch Disk Utility found in Applications/Utilities. Your external drive while show up in Disk Utility's side bar.
Then select it and click the 'Erase tab' at the top.
Select Mac OS Extended-Journaled formatting from the Volume Format menu.
Then click the oval Erase button at the lower right. *Just remember-this will erase the drive!*

  • DI imported an mpeg4 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and the Precision Editor is grayed out and I can't edit.  Why??

I imported an mpeg34 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and I am unable to edit it.  Precision Editor and Clip Trimmer are grayed out.  Any idea why this is happening?

Did you get any joy with answering this?
My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files  in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.

  • Why is precision editor grayed out?

I have imported two .mp4 videos into iMovie and the Precision Editor and Clip Trimmer commands on the Window menu are grayed out. What have I done? What do I do to make them available? [iMovie '11 v. 9.0.8]
    Thanks.

You need to create a Project and drag the clips or portions of clips to the project area. For these commands to work, the Project needs to have the focus, and you need to select a clip.

  • 18 fps breaks transition previewing, precision editor, and keywords

    Greetings,
I'm working on a Super 8 movie project. My films were scanned at 18 fps. When I imported them into iMovie '11 I had no choice but to convert them to another speed -- 24 fps in this case. OK. Most things work fine, but there are a few exceptions.
Keywords: Easy to add, difficult to remove. Never get the checkmarks. Sometimes have to use Cmd-Z to remove they keywords. But it all works fine as long as I have a project whose frame rate is the same as the raw footage, which I can't do with Super 8 transfers. OK, I can live without keywords.
Transition previews: Again, this is only a problem when there is a frame mismatch between the project footage and the raw footage. But with my Super 8 transfers I have no choice: The raw footage is at 18fps while iMovie does only 24 or 30 fps. I chose 24 fps.
One problem is using the transition preview function in the transition Inspector. (Just to be clear, I hover over the little transition thingie in the Project Browser to select it, click the gear, then click Transition Adjustments on the drop-down menu. Then I click the Transitions thing and that opens a palette of transitions. I skim over the various transitions to preview them.) Depending on the transition (assume were doing clip A to clip B), clip A shows up fine but, depending on which transition you choose, part or all of clip B is the wrong footage from somewhere else in the project. (WT...?)
Precision editor: Skimming the bottom row shows a completely different part of the footage than it should! Playback on the middle line works fine, though. Footage on the top strip is the same as on the middle strip when the playhead is to the left of the transition. This should also be the case with the bottom strip and the middle strip when the playhead is to the right of the transition, but the bottom strip shows a completely different footage instead.
Also, the transition playback is a little jerky. Fortunately, all is well with normal playback and exported footage.
OK. I'm on iMovie 9.0.4. I think this is the latest version I can use with OS X version 10.6.8. I saw a post with iMovie 9.0.7 mentioned, but that only works for Lion. OK, so my question is, will these bugs be fixed if I upgrade to Lion and the most current version of iMovie? Or, am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

CORRECTION: Sorry, the mismatch of frame rates is not responsible for the bottom strip of the Precision Editor (PE) from showing the wrong footage. I did a test where some Super 8 18-fps footage placed into iMovie 24 fps  worked fine. But most cases still exhibit the problem. So I don't know what's causing it.
I'm reasonably sure that frame-rate mismatching is the cause of the keywords problem. I took some test footage with the Mac's camera and that's at 15 fps. If I work with that footage in a 30 fps project, all works well. If I work in a 24 fps project, I never get the checkmarks when marking footage, but I am able to use Remove All to remove all the keyword marking strips. But when I work with my Super 8 footage, 18 fps original in 24 fps projects, it's even worse. I can't remove the keywords except via Cmd-Z. Acutally, many moons ago I think I did find a way, but it was difficult and took much experimentation, and thus much time. Come to think of it, the "many moons ago" was almost certainly a time when I had an eariler verion of iMovie. Other than this, my tests yield consistent results -- so far ((!))
Great program, except for the annoying bugs. I like the design. I really like the "extendo buttons", as David Pogue and Aaron MIller's book iMovie '09 calls them (Apple term: Fine Tuning buttons). And now that I'm adding a few transitions to my VFT movie, I'd really like the PE to work. Bummer.
As for stuttering transitions, I have more experimentation to do.
Sorry for the goof about the PE.

  • How get rid of blue bar in precision editor?

Hi, I'm trying to do an edit in the precision editor between two audio clips, but there's a portion of each which has a blue bar on the bottom, and that part is silent. What does the blue bar mean and how can I get rid of it so I can use those portions of my audio clips? Here's what it looks like:
    Thanks,
    Tony

  • Two up Display Won't Open in Precision Editor

Even though I have "Show Detailed Trimming Feedback" checked in Preferences, the two up display never appears in the Viewer when I am in Precision Editor and on a transition between clips.  Also, the two up display never appears under any condition in which it should.  I have clicked the Option key several times, but the two up display never toggles on and off.  What can I do to get it to work as it is supposed to?
    Thanks for any help

Try trashing yoour preferences and resetting it again.

  • Precision editor won't open

I can no longer show the precision editor either by rt clicking or double clicking.
I have chosen the Select Tool and tried with the Trim Tool.
I did it last week - what have I changed?

You can only use Precision Editor in Primary Storyline.  Aha. Sigh.

  • Precision Editor doesn't work

    Hello,
I am trying to use precision editor to trim two conected clips (conected clips, not in primary story line)
but I didn't figured out how to do it.. even if I create a storyline for these clips,it is not possible to trim
    using precision editor.
    that's it? it's not possible? or it's  a bug?
    thanks

The Precision editor only works on the primary storyline. I don't know if it's a bug or by design. You could make a feature request. The other trim tools are far superior anyway IMO. The one thing I can say about the Precision Editor is that it's not precise.

  • Blue waves not appearing in Precision Editor

When I click the blue audio icon in Precision Editor, the blue waves do not appear
above and below the clip filmstrip. What do I do? Why are they not appearing?
    debcoo
    thx

The precision editor includes video and its associated audio, additional audio tracks such as from itunes are treated as extras and therefore don't display their waveform, which can otherwise be seen by selecting the audio track and using clip trimmer. Sorry i didn't fully understand your question to begin with.

  • Precision Editor collapses when used

A strange problem has suddenly arisen with the Precision Editor in one of my projects.  Other projects are unaffected.
The Precision Editor opens normally, but when I click & drag on anything (clips, handles etc) the editor collapses back to Timeline view and I'm dragging the clip or handle around in that view!  If I'm dragging a media clip from the B-side, it remains under the restored Timeline view until released, at which point it hops back into the timeline.   If I'm dragging the handle, it replaces the transition symbol in the Timeline view, again until released, at which point the regular transition symbol reappears.
Any ideas?  As it's only affecting one of my projects (sadly the one I have to work on at the moment!) I'm at rather a loss.

Thanks for both your suggestions! I've tried them both, but unfortunately neither helped.   The strange thing is that it appears only to be this one project that is affected; and the Precision Editor has been working normally previously.  The only thing that's the changed is that FCPX is now on 10.0.5.
This is what immediately happens when I try using the Precision Editor.  The interface collapses back to near-normal timeline, and when the selected clip/handle is released, you're fully back in the normal timeline.

  • Precision Editor sometimes can't resize transition

    Hi,
I'd just like to confirm whether this behavior I get trying to resize transitions inside the Precision Editor is a bug or just me.
I have a video to explain, although I don't zoom in to the mouse pointer or put titles in sorry - so you'll probably need to set it to 1080p.
But basically I go to the Precision editor (Ctrl-E) I can then immediately get "Trim Handles" to resize the transition.
If I then zoom in or out - I can never get the "Trim Handles" back again - even if I zoom back to where I was in the first place.
The transition is just this steel, no-hover zone.
For other transitions, the Precision Editor never shows the Trim Handles, even if I don't go zooming anywhere.
Is there any way this can make sense or is this a glitch?

Works perfectly for me - have you tried trashing your preferences?
Faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and quite safe).
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
With Pref Manager, you can backup the Prefs first, then if trashing makes no difference, you can restore all your settings.
If you trash them and don't restore them, you will need to go over all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then you can ditch the bad prefs and restore from your (Digital Rebellion) backup.
Can't guarantee it, but It's worth a try.

  • Precision Editor

I'm having a baffling time trying to simply accomplish what I thought would be no problem.
I want to scrub out some audio from a clip. I am trying to do this with the precision editor set to audio.
I realize that you need to have two clips to work with. So I split one clip into two pieces. I click on the second clip and open up the precision editor and toggle on the audio icon.
That drops down the two clips with the blue audio tracks one over the other.
Now I am at a loss as to which area I drag in which direction in order to remove some audio from my clip. I do not want to 'join' any audio I just want there to be a dead zone on the track with no audio and then have the audio resume.
Maybe I should not be using the precision editor to do this but I know it can be done this way....I just can't figure it out.
Actually I did accomplish this once but forgot how I did it. However the area of audio that was scrubbed just inserted itself and the original track was still there and the playhead just went back and included the part scrubbed out.
Now that I have throughly confused you I realize that it may not be easy to explain this to me without actually sitting with me and walking me through it.
    I would love some input.
    Dan

no, no, that is a yet-non-existing feature!
just an idea from my weird mind..
iM allows to set markers .. chapter markers and 'commentary'..
in a future version of iM, why not using such a marker to mark a part of a clip, to lower volume, for example.. ?
    not yet existing..
    I wrote Apple a mail..

  • Precision editor's main rolling edit bar not responding

I've been using FCP X for a few days without hiccups.  Earlier today, the precision editor's central rolling edit bar (button w/ 3 vertical hashmarks) just...stopped working.  It's like it's disabled.  Everything else in the precision editor works as it did before.  I've restarted program, computer (2010 macbook pro 15in i5), and no response from the edit bar.  As if some preference has been turned off. Any help with this? I can't imagine it's simply broken.

Do both of the shots have media available beyond the edit points to allow you to roll the edit? Could you post a screenshot of the precision editor and perhaps tell us a bit of what you're doing?

  • Cannot access precision editor in iMovie 10.0.5

I am using iMovie 10.0.5 and am in the timeline of a new project and would like to preserve the length of my movie after adding transitions.
I hace double clicked on the space between each clip and there is a visual change and the option to close prec. ed. but no way of using the pref. ed.
How can I use the facility to preserve clip length?
Thanks in advance and apologies if this has been covered already.

Thanks for the tip QuickTimeKirk.  Out of curiosity: does this mean that it is no longer possible to create camera archives in the latest version of iMovie?  Or with the changes in the iMovie platform, is it enough with simply dragging the AVCHD package into your laptop?
