IMovie problem

Hello,
I have problems when I copy material from my old DV camera to iMovie. The material on the Dv tape was edited but when I copy it back to iMovie it is one long clip. Anyway the clips are not ending up in the right order!
I have Mac 10.8.5 OSX
and iMovie 09 version 8.0.6(821).
It should not happen, but it does....can someone help me?

    QuickTime or iMove problem?
I have an iMac G5, 1,8 GHz, 1,25 GB RAM. Initially I had Tiger, now Leopard is installed. Playback from iMove is slow and the same applies any file played with QuickTime. There is a temporarily solution in iMovie: I connect my video camera (FireWire) and select to "play back the video project via my video camera". Then playback in iMovie becomes smooth. Now I can switch off the power on the camera and the playback remains smooth.
    Annoying! Any suggestion?

    How to solve this problem:

  • IMovie -Problem restoring events after external hard drive failed.

iMovie 09 – The external hard drive failed where I stored my 2012 events.  I do not have a backup copy of these events. I bought a new external drive and named it exactly the same as the old drive. Then I uploaded archived original video clips to it recreating the events.  I used the exact same event names.  However when I view the projects I made from the original events, I get “this clip’s media file is not currently available”. The file path I created should be the same as the old, so why does the project not recognize the recreated events?  Any suggestions what I could try?
If I were able to retrieve and copy the old events from the failed drive to the new drive, would that work?
Has anyone successfully dealt with this problem?

That's a very interesting scenario that you've described. I've been concerned about a potential situation arising where I may need to restore Events from a backup drive. However, your situation is somewhat different in that you've had to re-import the Events to a new drive from an archive.
My main video drive is a Maxtor One Touch III Turbo comprising two 500GB drives set up as a RAID 0. So, effectively it appears as one drive totalling 1TB, with data being written to both drives simultaneously (but not mirrored). However, if one drive fails, the other becomes ineffective as it contains only partial data about imported clips (the remaining data being on the failed drive).
I backup the Maxtor to a portable 1TB drive by cloning it using SuperDuper. My thinking has been that, if the Maxtor fails then a simple rename of the backup drive to the same name as the Maxtor is all that will be required for iMovie to retain the linkages between Events and Projects. I hope this is the case!
I hope you get a solution to your predicament - sorry I can't offer any useful advice!

  • ILife broken! All started with iMovie problem, any ideas?

I have posted in the iMovie 6HD forums about a problem of it slowing down to a crawl and no one has been able to resolve that issue. I spoke to several employees at the Apple store about the problem & they ran it past a 'Genius' who didn't suggested reinstalling the entire iLife suite.
I did that yesterday and now none of the iLife suite will even open. When you click the dock there is 1 bounce and nothing happens. Dbl click the icon in the finder, it acts like its opening, but nothing happens. What went wrong? I've never had Apple software ever act this way.
I reinstalled the iLife software twice to no avail. Please help!
    Thanks,
    Mark

Did you run the suggested 3-pass Memtest? What did it report? What did the AHT say? If you believe that the hardware is OK, then it is a software issue. If so, and you have done a clean install from the ground up... things are indeed looking bad for you.
I would first run the 3-pass Memtest in single user mode as the instructions outline. This test alone will take several hours... unless your "lucky" enough to have an easily identifiable bad memory block. After that, and assuming the AHT passed everything it is now time to start from scratch. Install the OS and nothing but the OS. Do a clean install, not an archive and install (again, make sure everything is backed up to another drive). Take the new install out for a spin- does everything seem OK? Then start installing apps one at a time. If the iLife apps are your main apps, install them, run all the updates, and then repair permissions. Now how are the iLife apps responding (if at all)? If installing JUST the iLife apps on a clean install of the OS doesn't work, there is a high probability of a hardware problem which means now a technician would need diagnose the hardware problem. If the iLife apps work without any other software installed, then there is a high probability there is a software conflict with another program. Now it is time to install one program at a time trying out the iLife (iMovie) apps until you see which program is causing the conflict.

  • IMovies problem with Ken Burns effect.

When I use Ken Burns effect in IMovies, the bricks of a house, the line of a shirt, ... are kind of vibrating. In Aperture 3, it is ok. Is that a known problem with IMovies ?
    Lombarr1.

I have seen that in older editions - like iMovie 6 - especially when using pics at a high resolution - the water or sky seemd to shimmer. Funny I'm using iMovie 11 now and some things I liked better in 6, but you bring to mind something that bugged me (though people would ask - "How did you get that to happen?")

  • Imovie, problems with opening a project

I have imovie '08 and I mistakenly edited a film using this program before realizing how terrible it is. I edited this project and then saved it on an external hard drive. Now I am trying to open it again in imovie (I have also tried importing it) and it is not working. The file is a iMovie Project and I have been able to open up all the clips that this project uses, they are in my "event library."
I also have the older version on imovie: imovie HD, and I also have Final Cut Pro 6. I got both after I realized this version of imovie is worthless. If there is anyway to bypass the whole imovie '08 problem and just open them up in Final Cut, this would of course be ideal. However, I have not been able to figure this out, and I can't even open up this project in the imovie program that it was uploaded and edited in.
Thank you for you time and patience,
    Michael

Maybe if you explained things a little more. . .
How are you installing your new programs?????
Do you just open the .dmg file, open up the application's icon and go from there, or
do you take the application's icon and then drag it into the Application's folder and open
    it from there??? or what?
Are you just talking about updates??
I may be way off base, but why are you trying to "make both of the windows show at the same time?"

  • IMovie-Problem with hangups.

I just upgraded to IMovie 11 from IMovie 8. I only have about three short projects (15 min each) and one longer one (5 1/2 hours worth of clips) in IMovie, so it shouldn't be too slow. I had no problems with hangups working on 8, but immediately had problems with 11 after upgrading.
Whenever I try and play a clip by pressing the space bar, I get the "spinning ball of death" for about 10-15 seconds. EVERY time I move the cursor and push it to play I get the same thing. Not very time efficient.
I repaired permissions, restarted, and moved any large desktop files to external drives, but it doesn't help. I don't have whole lot of clutter anyway, most of it is on externals.
I have an IMac 2GB 800MHz with all the new updates. I would think it may be a lack of memory, but it may be a bug or something, since I had no problems with 8?
Would it help to dump any movie clips from IPhoto? Does that affect IMovie?
    Thanks in advance!

Wow, i did not realize that the problem has been reported before. The tech support supervisor talked and acted like he'd never heard of this before. I guess they should monitor their own forums! I love the iMovie software when it works. I don't know of any PC products that are so intuitive and easy. Unfortunately, I, too have been very disappointed by this expereience, especially since I have been complaining for 12 years about every PC I ever owned and have been arguing with all my PC user friends about how wonderful Apple is. After reading the previous thread about this problem, I have to seriously think about returning my Mac for a refund and cut my losses.

  • Security update 2007-005 and Imovie problem

Yesterday my macbook automatically installed security update 2007-005. I later opened Imovie HD 6 and found a problem - when opening, the program title etc was shown in the desktop menu but then the last movie I worked on started to open, putting the opening picture directly onto the top left of the desktop over everything else including the menu. The Imovie page then opened on top of this, with a blank Imovie screen. To get the movie into the screen I have to start the movie running. Imovie then seems to work OK but this leaves fragments of the first screenshot of the movie still on the desktop until overwritten by other programs or actions. What can I do about it?

    Hi
Can you tell people how you cured the problem, so that those who search looking for answers to a similar problem know how to fix it?

    I haven't got a problem myself, BTW)

  • Started as an imovie problem but now I'm not so sure..

I've been trying to connect my Canon DV Camcorder to my Mac Pro, but I can't make it see it
I initially thought it was a compatibility problem with imovie HD6, but after posting on that forum something else happens - my answer to the questions I was given on imovie forum are below along with the added problem
The camcorder works on a G4 powerbook with imovie 4 and macbook with imovie 8
    +The more I dig the more confused I get+
+I have around 160Gb of free space so I rule that one out+
    +Permissions repaired+

    +third party plugs ins - I don't think I have any+
    +One point I didn't mention - I have just switched to Leopard - however, it didn't work before! - I'm on imovie 6.0.3 - will this make a difference? - where can I download 6.0.4?? - I've not got iLife '08+
*+I've notice when I plug the camera in - after around 30 seconds I get a 'device removal warning' and one of my external harddrives disconnects!!+*
I have just upgrade to Leopard but have had the problem long before
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum but I'm not sure now whether its a hardware problem

What is required to download video from my DVD Camcorder to my computer running OS X?
Downloading video stored on the camcorder's DVD is not supported under OS X.
Are you hooking directory via Firewire and not into or through a FW drive?
Mixing consumer electronics and FW disk drives is never a good idea, let alone ideal, as there can be noise and interference (crosstalk I think).

My guess is some kind of FireWire issue... which do happen on Mac Pro. Some use 3rd party PCIe add-on card, some have ports that don't work.
Have you troubleshooted this to death? tried with just the Canon and using different cables and ports? do you have a cable adapter to use on FW800?

  • ILife / iMovie problems, please help.

I just bought iLife09 and tried to install it, but i got this error message:
iMovie ’09 will not be installed on your computer.
iMovie ’09 requires a Mac computer with a graphics card that is compatible with Core Image. These include all systems with an Intel processor, or Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster) or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster). See www.apple.com/ilife/systemrequirements.html for requirements.
Installation of the other iLife ’09 applications will proceed.
It sounds like I have got an Intel processor or my processor is not fast enough.
any ideas to solve my problems?
    thanks

    Hi
iMovie 09 needs an intel processor.
Not so. I use iLife09 on a PowerMac 2GHz dG5 and most of it works (but
iMovie'09 are on limit of tiresome = slow)
    BUT - G4 = NO GO at all ! !
    *iLife 09*
What You need an Intel processor to be able to do.
    • AVCHD - video in iMovie (rest works on a G5 (even 1.8 iMac - but tricky to install)
    • iMovie’09 is slow on even a dG5 2GHz Mac Pro
    - RAM - extra is good
    - free space on internal boot hard disk > 25Gb or 5-6 times more for HD
    - if possibly second internal hard disk to intern-bus
(alt FireWire external hard disk - Mac OS Extended formatted)
avoid USB/USB2 disks, UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange formatted
    avoid - network solutions - don’t work
    • Lessons in GarageBand - INTEL is a must ! (rest of GarageBand runs OK
    • Some SlideShow functions in iPhoto

  • Placing Pictures in iMovie problems

I'm trying to a make a clip with pictures (JPG) and quicktime clips and when I play the movie to preview it some of the pictures aren't showing...
    What am I doing wrong???

    Hi
When iMovie starts to behave strangely the problem most often are either:
    • to low free space on internal (start-up) hard disk - 10Gb minimum I go for 25Gb
    • iMovie pref file got corrupted. Starting a new user/account forces iMovie to do
    a new error-free one.
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    Many possible origins. Most common:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc if it is less than 10Gb should raher have 25Gb
    • Hard disc is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.3 - is OK

  • IMovie Problems (Image size etc.)

Please see this link for a detailed description the problem.
    http://www3.telus.net/~jessum/PAGES/imoviequestion01.html
    Dual G4 Tower   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Your "question02" seems to be OK. I would have done the calculations via a different route, though. But the end result is similar:
Your calculations seem to use PAL so I use PAL in my example:
PAL DV sampling matrix is 720x576, but PAL actual active picture size is 702x576, and the pixel aspect ratio for both is 128:117 = ~1.094.
    http://www.iki.fi/znark/video/conversion/
Now, when those 702 and 720 horizontal square pixel rows are scaled to rectangular pixel rows on a TV, they are multiplied by the pixel aspect ratio 128:117 which gives us 768 for the actual active picture width and and ~788 for the sampling matrix width (the height remains the same).
Notice that 768:576 = 4:3 -- THAT is the 4:3 ratio on a TV! On the other hand the 788x576 square pixel sampling matrix figure includes 10+10 pixels on the left+right that can consist of black pixels. The pixels are black if the source is analog. But if the source is DV, then there usually is real material on the sides, too.
If the imported square pixel image's ratio is 788x576 (or any other similar ratio), THEN iMovie won't add black borders to it because it fits exactly to the 720x576 rectangular pixel sampling matrix. Usually it is best to use some larger multiple of those figures like 1024x749, 2048x1497, 2101x1536 etc so iMovie can better downscale the imported image (sometimes iMovie does this suboptimally thus rendering the images TOO sharp which causes flickering on an interlaced TV but I won't now go into that).
With 16:9, the ratio is (16:9):(4:3) = 4:3 larger than with 4:3. Multiply 702 and 720 with 4:3 and with the pixel aspect ratio 128:117 so you get the corresponding square pixels 1024 and ~1050. Notice that 1024:576 = 16:9 -- THAT is the 16:9 ratio on a TV!
Also then the 1050x576 sampling matrix includes extra material on the left+right that should NOT be included in the 16:9 aspect ratio calculations (a common mistake!). If the imported images' ratio is 1050x576, THEN iMovie won't add black borders to them because it fits exactly to the 720x576 rectangular pixel sampling matrix.
With NTSC the calculations are the same although some figures look weird: NTSC DV sampling matrix is 720x480, but NTSC actual active picture size is 710.85x486 (weird but true!), and the pixel aspect ratio is 4320:4739 = ~0.912.
So the square pixel NTSC actual active picture size is 648x486. 648:486 = 4:3 -- as weird as it may sound THAT is the 4:3 ratio on a TV!
Square pixel NTSC sampling matrix is 656x480. If the imported image's ratio is 656x480, then iMovie won't add black borders to it. ...but usually it is better to use an image that haven't to be upsampled in any direction so a similar ratio like like 720x527, 1024x751, 2048x1502, 2095x1536 etc can be used instead (BTW, iMovie HD 5-6 save still images as 720x528, which is a nice "coincidence").
With 16:9 the square pixel NTSC the actual active picture size is 864x486. 864:486 = 16:9 -- as weird as it may sound THAT is the 16:9 ratio on a TV!
With 16:9 the square pixel NTSC the sampling matrix is ~875x480. If the imported images' ratio is 875x480, then iMovie won't add black borders to it.
Now, didn't all that make sense!

  • Important wmv / files converted from wmv to avi into imovie - PROBLEM!

    Hi there,
I feel like I'm going insane with this.
I had the same problem on '08 as I do on '09.
I make youtube videos and I am trying to open some clips that were edited on a PC by other youtube users (who have emailed them to me for a group project). They won't open in imovie. If I convert the file to .avi or .m4v or even .mp4 using Handbrake, they still won't import into imovie.
I don't know what to do and there aren't that many threads about this online.
The closest I've got is this information I found on one thread:
iMovie '08 will only allow you to to import files containing compression formats that can be edited. If your AVI file won't import, it likely means that the audio and/or video data is not editable. To import it, you will have to first convert it to any of the acceptable compression formats. For video this means DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264.
    Can anyone help me?
I've wasted such a lot of time on this.
I have Flip4Mac (free) and I can't export a wmv file on it unless I buy Quicktime Pro but I'm loathe to buy it on the offchance by converted file still won't open in imovie
I hope to hear from someone soon.
    Many thanks,
    Emily

Hi Em and welcome to the forums!
On this one issue I may be able to help:
I have Flip4Mac (free) and I can't export a wmv file on it unless I buy Quicktime Pro
Nope, QT Pro does not export to wmv, but the PAID FOR version of Flip4Mac does that conversion!

  • Imovie problem please help!!!

I made a imovie and then deleted the video clips from my photo library! But now in imovie it won't let me save it or send it, but it lets me see the finished imovie? Please help!!

That one didn't work either. I don't understand why the clips looked fine in Final Cut Pro and look fine in Quicktime but are distorted in iMovie. I know this is an Apple Forum but for crying out loud, is there ANY editing software that I can get that will just play these things correctly while my Quad is in the shop? I even have all of the clips ready for dropping into a timeline (trimmed in QuickTime Pro) and all I need to do is render it into video and audio TS files and I'm good to go. Otherwise I lose a major client! This is crazy because I own Final Cut Studio but my software is back in the States (I'm in London right now)!
Apple makes great products, and I'm a very loyal customer but this particular problem is gonna sink my business!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
