Imovie program keeps freezing.

I can drag a clip into the project.. freeze the program. Then "force quit" open it again and the 1 edit I did will work. Try to edit something else, such as drag a clip into the edit area and will happen again and again and again. Please HELP this program is un-usable!

Hello,
Welcome to the discussions.
A question:
Is the external drive Mac-formatted? You will have all kinds of problems with iMovie if it is not.
Some comments:
Some people have reported problems with daisy-chaining Canons. Some of their camcorders like to be directly connected to Macs in order to import video footage. Does your MacBook have 2 Firewire ports? If so, use one for the external drive and one for the camcorder.
You do know that the iMovie app needs to be on your computer's drive? But the project can be on the external.
Lastly, have you tried deleting iMovie's preference file? With iMovie closed, go to Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist. Trash this plist file. iMovie will create a new one when you reopen it.
Relaunch iMovie and see if the problems are resolved.

  • Programs Keep Freezing, Why?

I just got the mid-priced macbook because my iBook g4 crashed 2 weeks ago. I transfered all of my files over and have not been having much luck with this little guy. I get no mooing or whine, and the CoreDuoTemp indicates that it runs at acceptable temps, but programs keep freezing on me. I've had to re-boot more than 5 times today. This is highly frustrating because I could let my G4 run for weeks without restarting it.
I've been working on a video project all week, and the programs that have been freezing are: Entourage, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, CoreDuoTemp, Sound Studio. Sometimes the programs freeze as soon as they are opened and sometimes it's in the middle of a task.
I did have Limewire installed, but I deleted it earlier today, still having problems.
Any ideas? This is so frustrating.

I've verified and repaired disk permissions, I've run the hardware test, no problems detected. I also downloaded and did the memtest, everything passed. Programs are still closing, particularly strange is soundstudio, it is no longer freezing, it is now just closing and no error messages, or anyother types of messages appear in the console log.
Another oddity is that the "sound" icon in my system preferences looks like a light switch...it's boxed in, clearly not what it should look like. I only know it's the sound icon because when I click on it, the sound options come up. The icon has no label.
    I'm just baffled.

MMy iPad 3 mail program keeps freezing , how do I unfreze force quit and get it working?

You can force quit any program on iOS by double tapping the home button. This should bring up a swipe-able panel of all of the apps currently running. Simply swipe up on any app you want to close.
As an aside, all of the apps on this panel are backgrounded to some extent (i.e. waiting for you to come back) and are using some system resources. On older devices you may want to keep an eye on how many are there because it can be a performance drain. I've personally had this issue.

  • My contacts program keeps freezing up

My iMac keeps freezing up. I have only had this problem after upgrading my operating system to snow leopard. It just keeps scanning and you cannot use the program the only thing I have been able to do is shut down the computer and I can only do that with the power button.

Thank you very much...I uninstalled and reinstalled and all my documents were there and it works perfect.  Thank you very much!!!

  • Program keeps freezing when trying to change library or restore ipod.

Having problems since updating like everyone else! Was missing files, etc.
I am trying to change the library location in preferences, but the program locks up when it is opening the window. Also freezing when I try to add a folder to the library.
I tried to restore my ipod on the summary page and same problem, opening window and it freezes. I have now reformatted my ipod and am trying to start fresh. Even reinstalled software, but no luck.
    Help!

Me too .. very frustrating, spent the last 3 hrs looking for solutions.
Also noticed Apple has suspended downloads of itunes 6 for the time being ... wondering if its a related bug.

  • IMovie HD Keeps Freezing Up

I'm currently using a MacBookPro with iMovie HD.
I have imported approx 50 minutes of video clips (.dv) from a Cannon video camera via firewire, with the camera daisy chained through an external FW hard-drive. I was able to import the videos, but after all were downloaded the "letterboxing" application started running. This worked for about half the clips then locked up. After stopping the application and shutting down/re-starting I was able to start view the clips and start building and editing my project. Only using the "letterboxed" clips, this will work for a some time but then will freeze up and give me the multicolored beach ball. At that point I have to force quit which prevents me from even opening iMovie unitl I shut down the entire computer and start over.
The firewire dirve = Fantom Drives, 120 GB, firewire.
Any help with correcting this issue is much appreciated.

  • I'm editing multi cam with 4 cameras and my program keeps freezing up.

I think that the only way to stop this from happening is to increase my RAM but I wanted to find out, what is the recommended solution? I'm using Premier Pro CC 2015. on Windows 8.1.

First, that video controller seems to be a board-mounted one ... not "bad" as far as those go, but without it's own supporting cast so to speak. It doesn't seem to have any v-RAM, I'm assuming just uses the RAM of the computer itself. And at 8Gb, that's ... very minimal for the CPU. It's got more guts to the video capability than my laptop does, but not enough to really carry the video weight.
Second, with only your system drive and one USB3.0 external, your drive capabilities are very low. If that external has a faster-than-normal cache-read/write performance, and the only thing on it was your footage (media), at least the media could get read into the process decently though with multi-cam sequences that's a harder workload than single-clip work. With that setup, however you've got your various parts of the process laid out, you simply don't have the capability to pass data back and forth at playback speeds. Not even close.
Even a second internal SSD that you could put project files, cache, database, & previews on would improve your performance. It would still be low, but not as way low. That's one of the frustrating things ... these video programs are huge suckers of computer hardware capability. My laptop runs Lightroom & even Photoshop just fine. It's worse than yours for trying to do video on, however. But ... when I got it, I hadn't yet started down the video processing trail. All of 2-1/2 years ago.
As we can afford it, that will go to my wife ... also a professional portrait photog. I'll get something vastly more potent for the ability to do some video work on it.

  • Programs keep freezing

    Hi Newbie here.
i have a G4 sawtooth 20GB HD 512MB ram. It's running on Tiger and has latest version of iLife MS, adobe photoshop & office installed.
i bought th emachine 2nd hand & i believe the same OS and other apps discs have been used to add the apps to other machines.
i keep finding that apps shut down unexpextedly and then reopens, this is happens most with iphoto and safari. I've used the updater to download the latest updates but in some cases it will not let me install them, with the tiger & itunes updates it starts to install then comes back an gives a message of unable to verify copy of OSX and so cancels the update. Might i have aproblem with the copy of OSX being genuine? i have no install discs. i have run the disc permissions a couple of times which seems to help for i while.
Any suggestions on what to do, or do i have a dodgy software problem?
might the version of i life be to recent for my machine?

    HI Giff,
First, 512MB of RAM is probably insufficient to run Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is a memory hogging application. Second, if you can, open a Finder window. At the bottom of that window is displayed the free drive space. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free drive space. Not enough memory and less than necessary drive space will cause apps to crash. Also, you indicated you are running Tiger but which version? Click the Apple logo top left of your Desktop, then click About This Mac. Under where it says: Mac OS X is the version number. We need that information in order to help troubleshoot.
In most cases, a Software Updater will crash if there isn't sufficient room on the disk. Another way to check that information is using Disk Utility located in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch Disk Utility and then click MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. The info is displayed at the bottom on the right where it says: Available.

  • HT1338 my iPhoto program keeps freezing.  what is happening?

Hello.  I am trying to edit photos in iPhoto, but it continually freezes.  Why?  What can I do to fix the problem?

  • My aperture program keeps freezing up and my computer battery died but after plugging in and restarting now aperture won't open at all

Why wont my aperture open ???? Working on a clients project and need it ASAP. pLEASE HELP!!!!

If you need to reboot after updating then this usually means that files were in use and couldn't be updated.<br />
A possible candidate is in such cases is security software.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
You can also try to login as Administrator or possibly run Firefox once as Administrator via the right-click context menu.

  • My iTunes keeps freezing during syncing and wont let me put any music on. What do I do?

I have a PC and the newest iPod touch. I was receiving error message -54 while syncing recently so i checked on this site and found out that some of my files could be locked. Sure enough I went through all of my files, found and deleted all the locked ones and wiped my itunes. I then kept getting a error message telling me that the sync session couldn't start. Then I wiped my ipod and uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes multiple times. But each time I try to sync my ipod, itunes freezes and I have to restart the entire program. I am at a complete loss as to what to do. I have tried everything I could, and have had no luck. The program keeps freezing on me and doens't allow me to sync my ipod or my ipad, so it would seem to be a problem with my itunes but I don't know what to do, nevermind how to fix it.

You will lose all of the content on the ipod, but you will have to restore.  If you cannot then follw this:
iOS: Unable to update or restore

  • Argh! iMovie HD keeps stalling/freezing ...

I am trying to work on my movie, which is made up entirely of stills (from Photoshop, imported as JPEGS). I have had no problems up until today. Now the thing keeps freezing. I can edit the clips and everything in the timeline, but as soon as I try to play it back (either in full screen mode or not) it stalls, doesn't play smoothly, and sometimes freezes. I have to play it to see if it's done what I want, but when I try ... everything seems to go up in flames.
My movie is not that big, really, only 222.7MB so far, and only around 2.5 minutes long. I do have a lot of overlapping audio clips, but that shouldn't make it freeze like this, should it?
Can anyone give me any tips? I'm using iMovie HD 5.0.1 on my college's computers ...

I do have a lot of overlapping audio clips, but that shouldn't make it freeze like this, should it?
iMovie shouldn't stutter during playback, but sometimes it does. It's probably not caused by the overlapping audio. It's probably caused by the NUMBER of audio clips in your timeline. At some number of audio clips, the audio will start stuttering, causing the symptoms you describe. As you add more audio clips, it gets worse.
(The words often used to describe this problem are "stutter" and "pause". "Freeze" suggests the application permanently stops responding. iMovie sometimes appears to freeze when it stutters, but it will eventually resume, then stutter again, and again.)

  • HELP...iMovie keeps freezing...

How big is too big for a file on the old iMovie...I'm working on a Team Highlight Tape at a High School and the banquet is only a few days away...I have a 35 minute video complete with transitions, music, everything...It's fantastic, only now it wont play properly and keeps freezing up...Everything has been rendered as best as I know...
Is it simply too large of a file with videos and music??? (I do have 76GB available according to the bottom of the iMovie Folder)
    HELP...Thank You...

I have had a similar problem and found the skipping, jerky playback (images, not audio) happened only with certain downloaded audio tracks (there must be code or something embedded in some music, even if it is downloaded from iTunes; this happened consistently with the group Hapa). My cue that this was going to happen was the length of time it took to download a selection from my iTunes library. Most tracks take less than a minute - but Hapa, for instance, took 4 or more! The music would play fine, but my video was erratic. All I had to do was change the music and everything would work fine.
