Imovie project won't import.

Hi there,
I just installed FCE and I am unable to import my imovie project. I've followed the simple instructions in the manual but I get a "wrong file" message and it won't load.
Not impressed. Garageband projects import into Logic no problem. Why not here?
Thanks in advance.
J

I'm using Imovie 08 and brand new FCE fully updated.
In FCE I go to file>open> and select the imovie .rcproject. It fails to load. it reads - "file error-wrong type". Does this mean the project file is not compatible or does the project contain something FCE doesn't like. The project contains mainly jpgs and some mv4 (?) files, all of which imovie is happy with. There may be another file type I've missed. I'll check.
Where does imovie store the jpgs i've placed in the project? Perhaps I could grab them and copy. They won't copy over from imovie. sorry for rambling.
thankyou.

  • IMovie HD won't import from Sony HDR-HC1

iMovie HD 5.0.2 (111) on my G5 desktop controls, but won't import from, my new little Sony HDR-HC1 1080i DV camcorder. Same was the case with my 12" 1 GHz PowerBook until, at the advice of a Manhattan Beach Genius Bar tech, I did an archive reinstall of 10.4 and a reinstall of iMovie HD on both my G5 PowerMac and G4 PowerBook and then downloaded all the updates. Now my PowerBook works, but my PowerMac still won't import. On an empty second HD in my PowerMac I installed OS 10.4 and iMovie HD ONLY (to create as sterile as possible of an environment), made the 2nd HD my startup drive, and still iMovie HD on my PowerMac will not import from this camera (although it will from an older Sony VX-1000 regular def camcorder).
Does anybody have any solutions, or any idea why iMovie HD now imports on my PowerBook but after the same makeover still won't on my PowerMac?
Per earlier posts, I tried playing some piano notes in Garage Band, trashing the iMovie preference files, and reinstalling QuickTime (the tech had heard QT 7.0.3 could be at fault from becoming corrupted in certain updating combinations), all to no avail.

I have had import/capture problems using FW drives with FCE/iMovie5 and my 2gig iMac. My canon GL2 works fine but only when no other FW devices are connected to the FW port I use the computers internal drive to capture. If your using the G5's internal SATA drives this (below) may not apply.

Some G5 users have had to purchase a FW PCI card or have the G5 front FW port replaced. Check this link.

  • Imovie crashes/won't import

I had a problem importing video from my sony TRV-250 into imovie 5 back when I first got my iMac. I called APPLE, reset PRAM and thought the issue was fixed because I was able to import. Hadn't tried again until now, and suddenly I find I'm in the same boat. It shows that the camera is connected but won't import, and crashes when I try to control the camera from the iMovie controls. I reset PRAM and that didn't work as it did the last time. I unplugged everything from the firewire ports(camera and ext. hard drive), restarted the computer and tried the bottom port with the top empty and it suddenly DID import, but stopped after 12 seconds and then wouldn't recognize my camera at all. It didn't even show that a device was connected in system profiler. I started over, resetting PRAM and restarting the computer with empty ports, and now it's importing. But it will only work from the top port, not the bottom. Does this make any sense at all? Why do I have to reset PRAM every-time I want to import video from my camera? If anyone has a similar issue or can shed some light on this I would really appreciate it.
    iMac G5 20 rev. B   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The only thing that makes it work is resetting PRAM everytime. Even then, only 1 of my FW ports will work. The other one always causes iMovie to crash. Unless I have a bad camera, bad RAM, or a bad FW port, it's not anything else on your list because I've checked it. My OS is updated from Thanks for your help. I'm lost.
Also I have updated everything. You mentioned that QT and OS shouldn't be updated. Is this what you meant? If so, do I have to reinstall the OS to go back to the old version? THANKS

my iMovie HD (5.0.2) won't import any .wmv movies.
they either appear toned down in the import window so they're not even an option or yield a screen saying 'The file can't be imported. Unknown error."
it's always worked until i just installed 'Switch' to convert wmas to mp3s --so could this be the cause? i've uninstalled it but still the same issue.
    does anyone have any advice?

    Hi Candy:
    Welcome to discussions!
WMV files are Windows files and (forgive me if this sounds rude) i doubt they have ever worked..at least without some type of program to convert them to a files that iMovie understands.

  • Imovie '09 won't import '08 files HELP!

I imported all my camera contents into iMovie '08 and all worked well. Later, my hard drive crashed so I upgraded to iMovie '09 with the new hard drive. My iMovies files were retrieved from an external hard drive backup. When I try to import the new files, IMovie '09 will not read them--it's like the files are empty (but they really aren't). Some are .mov files, some .dv files. Any suggestions?

Hi Suzq - don't want to alarm you, but are you aware of the following when importing video from iMovie HD projects:
Only the source video is imported; any additions or changes you’ve made to the video in your project are not imported. When you import video from iMovie HD projects:
    ● All clips from the clip viewer are added to a new Event.
    ● All clips from the timeline are added to a new project.
    ● Any clip that was dragged into the project from the Finder is not added to the new project.
    ● All transitions are replaced by cross-dissolve transitions.
    ● No titles or effects that were applied to the video are transferred to the new project.
    ● No music is transferred to the new project.
    ● Any clip that was dragged into the project from the Finder is not imported; only video clips that were imported from a camcorder into the original iMovie HD project are imported to the new project.
The above was extracted from iMovie '09's Help topic "Importing video from iMovie HD projects".

  • Imovie project won't open in imovie?

I was working on my macbook in iMovie '09 on a project on a seagate external hard drive and the events was on the hard drive also. I've never had any problems with it crashing on me until this project and I just used it the day before. After 15 minutes into the project i try adding another title in and it just kept crashing from then on out when i try to add a title and preview the project in full screen.
To add to problem I unplugged the external hard drive (properly) and plugged it in my iMac imovie '11 and just added one title. Then I took the external hard drive back to my macbook and now the project won't even appear in imovie. And when i find the file itself in the hard drive and click to open it, it opens imovie but still no project. Somebody please help. I would greatly appreciated it.
It wouldn't be problem to work on it on my imac expect i have other people using it through out the day and my macbook is easier for me to work on where ever i'm at.
Please somebody say you have the answer?

I am only guessing but I suspect the problem occurs when they edit their projects on their personal Macs running Yosemite with iMovie 10.0.7.  Editing (and possibly just opening) in 10.0.7 probably makes the projects incompatible with iMovie 10.0.6, the latest version that runs under Mavericks.
It would not be the first time that even minor updates to iMovie make backwards-incompatible changes to projects.
Downgrading form 10.0.7 to 10.0.6 is not at all a straightforward option so other than updating all machines to Yosemite, I'm not aware of a simple fix.
    Geoff.

  • IMovie'11 won't import mp4 movies

I have some large mp4 files that I'm trying to import into iMovie so I can edit them into shorter clips.
When I select "open with", iMovie is greyed out.
I can open the movie with QuickTime, and select export to iMovie, and the file appears in the iMovie dropbox on my computer, but iMovie still won't open it, or even recognise that the movie is there.
When I try "import" in iMovie and select the file, it takes about 10 hours importing, and then nothing happens, no error message, nothing, I just see iMovie open, and unchanged.
I am using iMovie'11 version 9.0.7 amd Mac OSx 10.8

  • IMovie HD won't import audio files

We have several dozen sound effects CDs that we imported to AIFF files through iTunes. Now, iMovie won't import the AIFF files. If you select them using Import or just drag and drop them onto the audio timeline, it just beeps and doesn't import them.
Importing them into FCP ans playing them back through the QT player and iTunes works fine.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd really like to avoid having to reimport the sounds off the CDs.

I did find that if the offending files were upsampled to 48 khz/16 bit instead of the usual 44.1 khz/16 bit, iMovie would accept them without any problem.
    iMovie's help file says:
"Tip: For the best compatibility with iMovie HD transitions, effects, titles, and the Ken Burns Effect, you should record your video with 48 kilohertz (kHz), 16-bit audio. Check your camera's manual for instructions on setting the audio bit rate and depth."
Even though these aren't video files with audio, it seems like it likes 48 khz/16 bit files.

  • FCE HD 3.5: iMovie project cannot be imported...

    ... I am unable to import iMovie projects (DV-PAL) to FCE HD 3.5. "... 1 folder unidentified/unknown" appears and that's it !
This seems to be a common problem, since the iLife-guide from Galileo-Press describes the same problem, but offers no solution.
I want to give my projects a rough structure in iMovie and then export them to FCE to do the finalizing.
    Anybody any idea ?
    Reinhard Biermann, Freiburg/Germany
    iMac 20" Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

... well, I finally converted my iMovie-project into a quicktime film and - alas - managed to import it into FCE.
However, this is only a theoretical option, since either "high quality" or the individual setting "PAL-DV", both give unacceptable results compared to the original quality of the project ....
So Apple's claim that both programs can be used in conjunction is not correct.
In future, I will have to decide from the beginning which program will be used for the project.
One point less for Apple Software ...
    Thank's for your help !

  • IMovie suddenly won't import

    Hi gang-
I've been having such problems with all my Apple applications since my Mavericks upgrade, now iMovie
I've been using a Canon Vixia HF R21 for a few years and haven't had any import problems other than long/large files slowing my computer a bit during import.
Today I shot an 8 minute video, no changes to camera settings, and suddenly iMovie (version 10.0.2) won't import.
The import window opens, I select the single clip, hit import, and the import window minimizes, all like normal. However the "importing clock" icon never appears on the iMovie header, and if I check the selected library date/folder for import or reopen the import window clearly nothing is happening. I can reselect the clip over and over and nothing happens.
iPhoto quickly and easily imported the clip (for a change, har) but of course that version is crap quality for editing and etc.
I've searched the forums to no avail. Tried ejecting and re-mounting the camera and iMovie a dozen times including permutations with iMac restarts. Nothing seems to work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks all,
    Matthew

Given that you don't have access to a Windows machine, you are of course right! For me, after having bought this splendid MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express, I didn't feel like throwing money after non-apple vendors just to get access to my files.
For me, it was just more sense to attack the root of the problem (problem with the AVCHD files) so iMovie and FCE gets the AVCHD structure as they expect to see it.
That the solution turned to be a windows program was just an accident (no problem for me).
Actually, to correct the file structure cannot be a difficult task, and there must be a mac solution somewhere, that does it better than that windows program!
Jader's description matches my case 100%, so I'm pretty sure that until the card is corrected (easiest is reformatted) the problem won't go away. As soon as this is done, importing will work - until something happens again with the file structure.
Please also note that this problem with iMovie and FCE has been documented by others long ago.
I must admit that I am surprised that conversion (and not correction) seems to be the preferred solution. But since conversion is so much used it must be OK. Just didn't work for me, iMovie virtually stopped when I tried.

  • IMovie Project Won't Open  on the Same Computer

I had just finished a long project.  I went to export it.  iMovie told me that their wasn't enough memory and to close the program.  THis happe when making my last project.  I did so and reopened it and everythign was fine.
This time however when I reopened it the project was missing from my project libaray!
Thankfully when I searched for it in Finder it IS there.  But when I click to open it.  iMovie opens, but the Project doesn't, nor does it apear in my in-iMovie project libaray on the side bar (though it is there in Finder).
    Please help!

This has happened to me before... I opened a project I had created in a previous version of FCP in the current version, and It would crash for apparently no reason. But then I noticed though it would crash as soon as I moved the playhead to a specific part.
Turned out to be an old Motion file created in the previous version of motion, that I was using as lower thirds. I managed to delete the bad file from the sequence and thankfully everything else worked fine.
    Good luck!
(Now to be on the safer side, I export movies of my Motion projects and use those in the sequence instead to avoid this sort of thing from happening.)

  • IMovie Project Won't Open, Instead Freezes iMovie

I'm working on an iMovie project that's kind of sizeable- more than 20GB. Initially, I was storing it on an external hard drive while I worked, and things were going slowly, but I was making progress. Occasionally iMovie would freeze up while I was working (leading me to save after every single step), but I was slowly hewing the beast into shape.
Suddenly, though, I can't get the thing to open. Any attempt to do so leads to the progress bar slowly progressing (during which time I can do little to nothing else on my Mac) until it finally hits a wall and the program crashes. I decanted the file to my hard drive, but got the same result.
This project is something that I really don't want to lose! Does anyone have suggestions as to how I can get it open?

    Hi
+internal drive- Free space 8.43 GB (232.57 total), same formatting (only no dual partition)+
    Probably part of this problem.
I would secure a minimum of 25Gb free space to make Mac OS, iMovie and QuickTime
    to run as expected.
THEN before running iMovie again do.
    • Open internal hard disk (Macintosh HD - most often)
    • Locate a folder named "User"
    • In this find Your acount - has a small house as an icon
    • In this there is a folder "Library"
    • In this there is a folder "Preferences"
    • In this there are file/s named
    com.apple.iMovie.plist AND LIKE THIS
Move them out to desktop and NOW re-start iMovie.
Does Your project opens now after these two actions.
    • Secure free space
    • Delete iMovie pref file/s

After many headaches, I'm reverting from 10.4.2 to 10.2.8. Unfortunately, all the iMovie projects I created while using 10.4 cannot be opened when I boot using 10.2. Any advice in making these new iMovie projects compatible with an old OS?

    we have three suspects:
    system
    Quicktime
    iMovie
    * to my knowledge, the system doesn't matter... ok, you should use "same" versions....10.3 with 6, 10.4 with 7... we expect iLife06 in january, because QT is on 7... hä???
    * QT - QT7 has some highlights, which are not supported with QT6, but iM uses .dv... that is older then QT6.... (hoooo....!!)
    * iM - as menitoned above: just upwards, not downwards.... esp. from <5 to iMHD there's no way back!

There's no harm in looking inside the Trash folder.
When a file or folder is deleted, it is moved into the Trash folder to give you a chance to recover it if it was deleted by mistake. Of course that means Trash folder could grow large as time goes and more files are deleted.
You can recover your movies if they are still in the trash.
You should also empty the trash if you think you don't need the files in it to free up disk space.
