Imovie & QT not launching
Hi
My first post.
I just got myself an imac, i transferred all my stuff via firewire from my powerbook g4 and all was going well until I tried to launch QT which "unexpectedly quits" as does imovie. They dont get anywhere near opening up before the unexpectedly quits icon appears.
Garageband, iphoto and all seem to be OK.
What is going on? My new shiny mac has me in tears already!!!!!!!!!
Help please.
Thanks
D

IMovie will not launch - "Terminates unexpectedly"
After spending the day working in iMovie, importing clips and photos, and creating new projects - and reviewing my work - everything worked fine. I shut iMovie and my MAC Pro down.
Upon restarting my MAC iMovie would not start. It came up with a message that it need to re-import all the thumbnails for my clips - I selected yes and waited ... and waited ... nothing was happening. Shutdown my MAC and restarted - now it stays in a start mode for about a minute and then terminates unexpectedly. I sent the resulting report to Apple for their review.
Then I downloaded the latest update for iMovie 7.1.1 and tried again with the same results.
Processor is 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDRs FB-DIMM
Any suggestions on how I may resurrect iMovie? Video project due in a week and I've already lost a day!I have been having the same problem with the same versions as you from the looks of it.
It does not happen with a different user so I suspect it is a plist problem or something user specific. I am going to look at it later and see if deleting that helps.
Did you ever find the problem?

The icon bounces ...lights up ....but nothing else happens.
Thanks for your helpHi
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
• Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
• Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
iMovie pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.

Appreciate any help I can get. Was working on a project and hoping I did not lose it.
That was my first attempt at fixing the problem and it didn't work. I guess I'll try it again.
Edit: Nope, nothing -
IDVD will not launch in iMovie HD 5.0.2
The iDVD will not launch as a notice says it won't launch with my version of osx. I want to be able to burn DVDs but can't. Suggestions???
If you want to use the iLife programs, per Niels response on your other post, you need to upgrade to iLife '06. Looking at the requirements, iLife '06 is the only version you can upgrade to, as iLife '08 and later require Intel processors for iMovie and other functions. One place you can buy it from is: http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/ilife06.html .
There are some freebie DVD burning programs available, however, you lose the integration that the iLife programs bring with them.
Roxio makes several programs that will burn DVD's. I've used Toast Titanium for years and can recommend it. See http://www.roxio.com/ -
Hi!
Hope someone give me advise on this. I bought iMac 20" on January 4, 2008 and had just tried to see iMovie. The program does not launch. I tried about 10 times to launch still does not work. I called Tech support (waiting time +30 min.) and gone through disk 1, 2 to install all software again. Still doesn't launch. So I reinstall Leopard again. Still does not launch.
All other softwares work just fine. What should I do next? Should I return the iMac and get another one? I have Applecare. Its just a new one. I am disappointed. Any suggestions? You've posted in the forum for AppleWorks, the Apple office program. You would be better off in the iMovie Forum where the iMove gurus hang out.

Yesterday, Feb 4, 2010 I ran Software Update and installed a Security Update.
Everything seems to work fine, EXCEPT iMovie 09.
iMovie 09 will not launch. The icon just bounces for maybe 2 mins, then it stops bouncing.
The message says "Application Not Responding", and I have to Force Quit the application.
I have tried re-installing iMovie and then running Software Update.
No resolution. Same thing happens.
I have tried moving the iMovie Prefs into the trash, emptying trash, restarting computer, and trying to relaunch iMovie - all to no avail. Same thing happens.
Please, Please, Please give me some advice.
What is going on with iMovie?
Thanks Kim.I have this problem... Removed Perian, Flip4mac and Aperture 3.0. It will launch in a fresh account, but not in my normal account. Below is the crash log:

After I updated to yosemite my iMovie will not open. I have found the folders in the applications folder for both versions 9 and 10 but neither one opens when I double click on the icon. How do I remedy this?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

IPhoto bouncing but not launching solution
Just thought I would share this (painful) experience with you folks so nobody will need to go through the frustrations I went though.
I got a new Macbook (white, 13"). Being the control freak I am, first thing I did was to do a clean re-install of OSX Tiger from the original discs (v10.4.10). This was so I only had what I wanted on my notebook, and not other needless stuff.
After the welcome screen, first thing I did, without starting any apps, was to run software update. This led to installation of the iLife updates (iPhoto 7.02 and iMovie 7.01). All was hunky dory, rebooted...
After the reboot, clicking on iPhoto and iMovie resulted in nothing. The icon would just bounce a few times, and... nothing. The application would not launch. This is one of the (many!) threads on Apple's support forums which shows this issue is not a unique one:
discussions.apple.com/me...=5319234#5319234
Yes, yes. I repaired permissions, deleted plist file, etc etc. No joy. Rung Apple Support - completely clueless. To make things worse, none of the forums provided solutions to this problem.
What was the solution? I re-installed OSX again (grr....), but this time, instead of installing the iLife patches straight away, I opened iPhoto, iMovie FIRST; exited, then ran software update, applied the latest patches, rebooted and waa-laa... no problems.
My gripe with this:
1. What if your "typical user" did what I initially did? What a quandary they would be in!
2. How can Apple make such a basic mistake? Won't there be a appreciable number of power users out there that would have done what I did, and applied patches on the first install?
I hope anyone who have had this problem find this post useful. If you hadn't reinstalled the system this wouldn't have happened. If you didn't want certain things on the MacBook couldn't you have just deleted them? If it were the extra language modules you could have used Monolingual. The MBs setup to work right out of the box with no further installations. Most users do just that, start using the MacBook right out of the box and bring over their user files, etc. either manually or with Migration Assistant. You're the first I can remember with this specific problem posting.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IMovie will not update after upgrading to iOS Yosemite
Have upgraded to Yosemite on iMac and Mac book, but iMovie will not update on either devices...it begins the long update and never seems to complete. On the iMac it says "no updates available" but the iMovie icon is crossed out on desktop. Says that version is not compatable. Macbook is showing an update for iMovie, but have tried several times to update and has not worked yet. Any suggestions???

Last night iMovie asked me to rebuild my thumbnails as I had some new videos, I did, although I never saw if it completed or not, it appeared to be progressing fine. This AM it is freezing up at launch, I cannot get past a few seconds (half a spin of the "wheel." No thumbnails show up. I don't use iMovie often, not sure if I have '07 or '08, but I had a project to do today, of course. TIA.

IDVD will not launch to burn DVD
In my iMovie HD 5.0.2, the iDVD will not launch to burn a DVD. I have tried everything. When clicking the iDVD, it says to go to Finder to launch. In Finder, I go to applications and click iDVD and get:You cannot use this version of the application iDVD with this version of Mac OSX.
What are my options???Just a little confused. I already have iphoto, imovie, garage band etc that would be in a ilife download so what are the benefits? Currently, when I click for software upgrades, there are none. Would downloading ilife really change anything?

.. anyone have a real answer? Imovie 11/snowleo and now imovie does not import from iphoto

Karsten, I mentioned "IPHOTO to IMOVIE" photo transfer.
In fact, you did not.
We had NO idea if it was a photo or a pocket-camera movie you were trying to import from iPhoto.
You also didn't describe what happens when you try to import.

My pics are already in "IPHOTO" i want to import them into "IMOVIE" and although the
pics appear in the last import tab in the "IPHOTO" librabry, they will not show up in "IMOVIE"
when i click on the photo icon to import them...i see pics from previous imports only., but not the current one that iam attempting to import. It is not an device issue.
this just started happening when i updated to "IMOVIE 11"
OK, that's a bit more information.
iMovie was probably already running when you imported the pictures into iPhoto and wasn't aware of the last import.
Try to quit iMovie and iPhoto, then launch iMovie again. The last import should show up.
Please take a few seconds to proof read your posts and also make then easy to read (no large letters, no underlining, no double line breaks in the middle of a sentence etc). -

After installing the 10.4.8 update, I have noticed that applications that I had previously installed before the update will no longer run. New downloads will also not run. I can extract the files, but clicking to run an application does not do anything. Looking at the Console utility, it logs a "crash" for application I try to unsuccessfully run.
That said, applications that came installed with OS X are running fine (iPhoto, Safari, etc). My firefox web browser is also running fine. I have also managed to install a couple of other apps from the internet (Flickr Uploader for example), but by and large, any other applications will not run.
Any ideas?From MacFixIt.com
Update prebinding Many cases of application launch-failure can be resolved easily by simply updating prebinding, via the following steps:
1. Log in as an administrator
2. Open the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities)
3. Type: sudo update_prebinding -root / -force and press Return.
4. When prompted for a password, enter your admin password, and press Return again. The process may take a few minutes, and you may see various messages flash by. The process is complete when the Terminal returns to a normal prompt.
5. Type exit and press Return.
Kill process in activity monitor Killing an application-related process via Activity Monitor (click the item then press the 'Quit Process' button) can allow proper application launch. This is especially applicable in situations where a restart cures problems with application launching, as the offending process(es) will, of course, be killed by the restart process.
Launch Activity Monitor (located in Applications/Utilities), then find the process associated with the problematic application, then quit it and attempt re-launching the applications.
Delete appropriate .plist files A non-launching application can be the result of a corrupt or otherwise defunct associated .plist file
Most of the preferences files that we will be talking about are stored in a folder named Preferences, and located in the Library folder of your home directory, e.g.:
* ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.
Go to the ~/Library/Preferences folder, and search for any .plist files that may be associated with the application you are having trouble with. Drag the .plist file(s) [many applications have more than one associated .plist file, so be careful to scour for all of them] to the Desktop, then re-attempt launching the application.
You can also use an application like Preferential Treatment to check for corrupt .plist files.
Re-install the application Try re-installing your application from its original media or download source.
If an Apple application or component is not launching properly, you might need to restore it from the Apple installation discs per the instructions in our tutorial "Re-installing Apple applications from a Mac OS X disc/update package using Pacifist."
Clearing caches Try using a utility like Tiger Cache Cleaner, OnyX, or Cocktail to perform series of system cache deletion routines. Go from light, to medium to deep (the ordinal levels are defined differently in each application), checking to see if your afflicted application launches properly after each.
Also, check the following folder for application-specific cache files that can be deleted, or at least temporarily removed:
/Library/Application Support (look inside the folders here for files that end with .cache, and delete them)
Make sure permissions are correct A range of permissions issues can effect Mac OS X applications, causing them not to launch.
In these cases, the first thing to try is a disk permissions repair routine using Apple's Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities).
Failing that, startup from your Mac OS X installation disc (insert it, then restart while holding down the "C" key). After the startup process is complete, go to the "Utilities" menu and select Disk Utility. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button.
In some odd cases (usually after a backup or when transferring backed up data back to a startup device), permissions on the "MacOS" directory (the directory that normally stores the executable binary in a Mac OS X application) can become incorrect.
In order to fix this problem, use the following steps:
1. Click on the afflicted application to select it in the Finder
2. Either click the application while holding the control key, or use the "Action" menu (the icon looks like a gear) to access the option "Show Package Contents"
3. Open the "Contents" folder therein, and then find the "MacOS" folder
4. Modify the permissions on this folder to give it "execute" permissions for all users. Do this by opening the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities) and typing the following command (don't press return afterward):
5. sudo chmod 755
6. After typing this, drag the "MacOS" folder to the Terminal window -- its path should appear. Press return, and you will be prompted for your administrator password, which you should enter.
The "MacOS" directory should now have read, write and execute priveleges for the owner, and read and execute privileges for the group and others.
Check CoreAudio As noted in Knowledge Base article #301658, some Apple applications might not open fully or at all if the Digidesign Core Audio driver has been installed as part of a Pro Tools version 6.9 installation.
Apple says to follow these steps if you are affected by this issue:
* Updating your Digidesign Core Audio driver may resolve the issue. You can find the latest versions for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) at http://digidesign.com/download/coreaudio. If that doesn't help, continue to step 2.
* Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities).
* Click the Audio Devices tab.
* From the Default Output pop-up menu, choose Built-in Audio.
Check for errant plug-ins Some application launch failures can be caused by problematic plug-ins or other add-ons. Safari and other Web browsers are notorious for suffering from this issue, as are some other extensible applications like iMovie.
Check the following locations for any recently added files, or any files implicated in error messages generated when you attempt to launch the problematic application:
* /Library/Internet Plug-ins
* ~/Library/InputManagers
Re-apply the Mac OS X combo updater Try re-applying the latest Mac OS X combo updater from Apple's software downloads page. Doing so can resolve issues with system components or delete specific files that can resolve application launching issues.
Create a new user account Try creating a new user account, and check if the application launches under it. If so, a user-specific corruption issue is likely at play -- see the above sections regarding .plist files and caches.
Archive and Install As a last resort, try performing an Archive and Install process, which will retain some user settings but otherwise leave you with a fresh Mac OS X installation.
Also, check with the application's developer for compatibility notes regarding the version of Mac OS X you are running, and revert to an earlier iteration if necessary.
