IMovie Question.. or screen question

I have a macbook.  When I open iMovie, the window does not come.  It immediately disappears into the right hand corner.  The only way I can get it to come back is by opening a new project...and then when I hit create, it disappears back into the corner.  I thought I might have an issue with my HOT CORNERS, but they are not even set up.  Can you help me get my iMovie up.  I have projects I need to finish.

If you have used an external monitor in the past, it may be opening there. Try VIEW menu to see if external monitor is checked.
If that does not prove helpful, I would suggest trashing the iMovie preferences file.

When I play an iMovie at full screen, how can I remove the bottom toolbar?  It shows up on the projector screen and I don't want my audience to see those tools at the bottom quarter of the screen.

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.

  • IMovie 4 black screen

    I have a 17" PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz running OS X 10.4.11.
I have iMovie 4.0.1. When I open it, the main window appears for a few seconds and then the entire screen goes black except for the pointer. I can command-tab to switch programs, but only the menu bar of another program is shown. If I activate Exposé I can see the iMovie window and if I position my pointer strategically can still interact with iMovie, even though the screen remains black. Quitting iMovie returns the screen to normal. Can anyone think of an explanation or possible solution for this problem?

    Hi
This seems to be a very strange problem. Can only share some thoughts.
    • Free space on internal/Start-up hadr disk ? How much ?
    • Have You done all normal trouble shooting things as
    Deleted iMovie pref file
    Repaired Permissions (Disk Util tool)
Repaired Hard Disk (Same tool but needs to start Mac from DVD or external hard disk)
    • Does iMovie 4 - really run under Mac OS X.4 ? (I run Max OS X.3.9 on my PB G4 1.5GHz)
    • Re-installed iMovie 4
    Else see my list
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time

    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK

From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • General iMovie Questions

Preface: most of my movies are family to include 5 high school graduations set to music in iMovie and a 6th coming up in 2 years. My process is simple - transfer Canon HD20 miniDV into iMovie on my laptop. My editing skills are very basic trimming and organizing. I store the movie files on 2 external hard drives. Question: Will the oldest files on external hard drive going back to 2005 hold up going forward with newer iMovie versions? If I want those files to still be functional 30 years from now, should I be doing anything differently? Thanks!

Ahh, a good opportunity for one of my 'We're all doomed!" posts ...
    a) iMovie project files probably need every 2. - 3. incarnation of iMovie an update;e.g.  if I'm correct, actual iM10 doesn't handle files from iMHD5
    b) iMovie exports, the 'done' consolidated files, will remain longer; mp4 exists quiet a while, and the codec inside, h264, too.
    but....
speaking of h.264 - first devices, such as iPhone5, use the successor, new h.265, for all hose new, shiny 4k/UHD content...
    and media ...
nobody knows, how long modern media keeps. I can read a 500y Gutenberg Bible, but ... anybody remember 5¼" floppies? Gone. Or, 3"MO media? Gone. Hardrives with a centronics/SCSII connector? Gone.  Speaking of using hard-drives…  The urban legend tells, the motors inside 'stick' when not moved at last every half a year... My first homebrewn DVDs were killed by 15min of sunshine on it …
I'm pretty sure, a book from the Middle Ages holds much longer than any of my digital photos/videos from my kids...... I should be happy, they are accesible in 10y!
iMovie Project, functional in 30y? A clear "No way!"
iMovie Exports? Perhaps, but you have to 'care' for the storage, and update files&devices frequently.....
In a hundred years the will call our present the 'Digital Dark Age', zillions of data poof! gone ...
    Sounds pessimistic… sorry for that.

  • 16:9 and iDVD/iMovie question.

hey all again lol. I dont know why the general questions stump me and the more detailed ones i understand. but here it goes.
1 If i shoot a movie on my cam in 16:9 that means i want my imovie and idvd sessions to be 16:9 right?
2 and if i shoot my movie normal then i would want to use the normal imovie/idvd setting correct?

lol thank you...yeah when i import into imovie it goes in and looks like regular tape but once i finish it encodes (or whatever its called) and then transferes it correctly when its done

  • Another "how to create HD DVDs using iMovie" question

I am able to download my  AVCHD footage from my Sony videocam into imovie11 (on my mac mavericks platform)....and am happy enough with using imovie as an editing program for my project.  And when I am done with my "project" imovie delivers to me a MPEG-4 file. It retains HD content (1920X1080p).
My Sony blu-ray player (BDPs350) will not play this file ...(strangely because it plays everything else)... so my question is what is the best (and lowest cost) way to create an avchd dvd of my project which will play in my Blu-ray player (and not suffer much degradation). My Sony PMB software did a great job in the past, but it is not available for Mac. I am on the verge of buying Toast and "hoping" it will work but their customer service was not reassurring when I talked to them recently. Will Toast 11 do the job?

    Yes and I said that
Roxio Toast - INCLUDING BD-Component can burn to both DVD and if You got a BD-Burner to Blu-Ray disks.
    BUT
DVDs are 4.2-4.7Gb and BD-disks 24Gb (If I remember rigth) - Meaning that You only can put about 20 minutes movie on a SL-DVD.
This BD-DVD - can only be played on Blu-Ray players (no standard DVD-player playback these. Not even Your Mac unless it got a special program that can do this (but to playback true BD-disks a dedicated BD-player is a must)
AND - My BD-DVDs play back greatly on my PlayStation3 - BUT NOT ON some Cheap Samsung BD-players !
    Do not know why.
    I use:
    - Verbatim
    - DVD-R
    - SLOW BURN speed !
And to me Roxio Toast Bundle was great value - especially Spin-doctor - as I have old vinyls and sounding bad - some sounded as brand new after processing in this. (and lot's more - back-conversion of DVDs, file conversion etc)

  • Best Hard Disk Handycam for iMovie Question

Not sure if this is the best place to post this question but I thought I would start here. I realize the answer is could be quite varied.
Which of the newer Handycams with a hard disk seem to provide the best quality and ability to work with iMovie08?

    Hi Stormin' Norman,
Yes, myriad answers possible I guess - all correct. For my part, I've been extremely happy with my Sony SR7 - 60GB HDD camera.
It's a great camera to use, though, depending upon what you are videoing, you may wish to add the other microphones etc as accessories. I've had some great results in varying situations, and, now that iMovie '08 and FC Express 4 work with HDD cameras, that issue has gone away.
Whether it's the best for working with iMovie, I wouldn't know - but I'm very happy with the camera.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

  • IMovie Question Adding Images

Hi everyone. I haven't really used iMovie to the extent that I need to now. I'm doing a rendering of a school for a client. I'll be exporting 2000 images that I need played at 24-30FPS. Would iMovie handle adding that many images and would it run at 30 fps?
Thanks, if I'm not clear please ask me a question so I can resolve this issue.
    -Mike

The 2000 images will turn into an animation like a flip book almost. So I need the movie to run at 30 fps per second each frame being one of the 2000.
For automatic creation of an image sequence the first step is order the images in a folder in the sequence you want them played. If all were taken in the order you want them display on a single digital camera, then they should already be in the correct filename order. If not, then you should name them manually using a strategy such as "Image0001, Image0002, Image0003 ... Image1998, Image1999, Image2000" to save time later. It also helps if all the photos are in the same orientation and dimensions, otherwise you will have to perform additional editing (frame splits, possibly reimportation of single frames for max quality, rotation, cropping/filling, etc.)
If you have QT Pro, simply use the "Open Image Sequence" File menu option to navigate to the folder containing your 2000 images and select the first image. QT Pro will then ask you to set the the desired frame rate. QT Pro will then proceed to create a Photo-JPEG video track which can then be imported into iMovie for addition of sound, voice overlays, etc. If you don't have QT Pro then there may still be other applications or scripts around which may or may not still work and serve the same auto-sequencing function.
The other option is to import the indiviual images directly into the iMovie project which will automatically create an "still frame" sequence at the correct frame rate for the current project type (i.e., NTSC 30 fps or PAL 25 fps). This approach allows you to create a slideshows manually adding music, voiceovers, effects, titles, transitions, etc. but means adding and adjusting each image sequence for the most part manually for optimum results. Also be advised that these two approaches produse drastically different effects -- the first like a "fast motion" playback of your images and the second a "slow-motion" effect is using the Ken Burns Effects.

  • Keynote/idvd/imovie question

I have a specific project that needs to be done and I want to ensure that I do it in the most effective way.
I need to make a professional slideshow to be shown in seminar rooms for training purposes. The show needs to have text headings, pictures of people and music (more than one song/presentation). There is a possibility of needing graphs/charts as well.
The tricky part is that it won't be static. We'll be changing the pictures everytime we show it (they will be pictures of the participants in each individual seminar) and we will change the music as well.
I need something that makes it really easy to swap music and pictures, and it needs to be somehow projected (picture and sound) for a large audience (100?).
I am thinking that I'll do it in keynote and export to idvd, but I think the music will be hard since we want more than one song per presentation. Can you export keynote to imovie? If so, I think that will be the easiest. I could do the whole thing in imovie, but that seems complicated.
Any ideas would really be appreciated.
    Amy

It does not need to be interactive at the time it is shown, there will be access to a mac or we can run it off of a DVD (actually anything is possible and it is up to me so I want to plan in advance for whatever the best route may be), and yes, there will be different slides and there will need to be different music throughout. Let me know if I understood and answered all your questions.
Part of the challenge is that the music may have to be changed every 3 months or so (we will have a seminar once a week and show the presentation once each week) and the pictures will change every week (based on current participants).

  • IPad iMovie Questions

Hello, I just got the iMovie app for my iPad a few days ago and I have some questions. I am currently working on a trailer and I am wondering if there is a way to insert your own music. I am also wonder if you can delete certain parts where it wants you to insert clips. Also can you change how long the clip you insert to a spot can be? Please help!

Check this out.  It appears you must make the trailer then convert it to a Project.

  • VERY VERY IMPORTANT iMOVIE QUESTION!

Hey! I really need your help!
So... I have been working on a project on iMovie for a few months now..
It all went well, til' when the Movie was about 20 minutes long... I couldn't play it in Full Screen, cause my Laptop always froze and i had to force quit iMovie... But it wasn't to big of a problem, because I could stil watch the movie, just not in Full Screen... But I got with it..
Now the movie is 45 minutes long and I have a big Problem!!! I CAN'T PLAY THE MOVIE AT ALL! iMovie freezes as soon as I click on this project.. All the other projects are fine... JUST THIS ONE! I really need this Movie... It's really important!!! WHAT DO I DO?!?!?
Please help me!   Thanks in advance!

I think it's pretty much been covered with everything. You have 2 options:
    1) Buy a replacement battery once yours is dead.
    2) Don't buy a replacement battery and work off the mains.
And if you find out your processor is too slow if you go with option 2, then switch to option 1. You may be strapped for cash now, but if you save pennies for the next five years, you'll cover it. Probably if you do get five years' life out of your battery, your Pro will be an old 'just in case' laptop by that point anyway.
You might want to research how you can make your battery life last longer as well. Like how charged up you should keep your notebook, whether or not to drain the battery completely and for how often etc. Can't remember the MBP's battery type off the top of my head.

  • IDVD and iMovie question for a TV viewing

I just created a 15 min movie for a friends fathers memorial that is tomorrow (sorry about the late request but no way around this one). I saved the iMovie to an m4v format. I opened this up in iDVD hoping to pick a format that she will be able to download (through yousendit), burn to a DVD and then play through a TV/DVD player. No idea what either the TV/DVD player is (format, or if its new or old??). Anyway, is there a generic format from iDVD that might work best? I am not familiar with the movie/dvd programs but work with the graphic programs daily. The format I sent her is .img and .m4v. Will these work? Didn't really see many options for saving to different formats.
    Thanks in advance.

If you create a disk image file (.img) out of iDVD (an option under FILE) and send it to her she can use Apple's Disk Utility (or Roxio's Toast) to burn the .img file to writable media.

  • Imovie question

How to import quickly from a sony handycam which has a mini DV tape instead of keeping it playing for the entire 60 minutes of recording per tape. If we use play + FF it does not import into imovie. Is there a way to do this.

    No.
    Import is in real time.

  • 06 IMovie question on resizing a clip

How do I resize a video clip from 600 to uner 100m? It's not even a minute long. I have Imovie, streemclip and quicktime softward. thanks

.. in case, you're speaking of the exported files size of an iM project, instead of using the few presets, choose Export/Quicktime/Expert settings .. and use any of the many options.. as 'resizing'/resolution to 320x240, diff. framerate, e.g. 15fps, different codec, e.g. h264, mp4, divx (if installed) ..

  • Upgrading from iMovie Questions

I need to upgrade from iMovie -- need to because I'm finding that iMovie is somewhat unreliable regarding some of its 'known issues.'
    So ...
I'm trying to figure out what the key differences are between FC Pro and Express. I'm willing to endure any 'learning curve' differences, I just want to figure out if there are any features in the Pro edition that I'll never use and weigh the differences.
    1. Is there any matrix you can point to that does this comparison?
    2. Is there a 'Final Cut Express Studio' that includes all of the software in Final Cut Pro Studio or do they have to be purchased individually.
    3. Are both FC Pro and Express devoid of the 'known issues' that can make working with iMovie somewhat unreliable?
    Thanks for your feedback.

    I found a comparison article here: http://camcorders.about.com/od/videoediting/a/FinalCutCompare.htm
Final Cut Express HD also gives you Soundtrack 1.5 and LiveType 2 for $299.
To get Final Cut Pro, you must by Final Cut Studio for $1299. With this you also get SoundTrack Pro (different from SoundTrack 1.5), Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Compressor, and the same version of LiveType (I think).
You cannot buy Final Cut Pro, SoundTrack Pro, Compressor, Motion, and DVD Studio Pro individually.
Since you cannot buy DVD Studio Pro individually, if you buy FCE HD you'd still need to use iDVD (or Toast) to author a DVD Video.
You won't find the same "known issues" as iMovie. There will be different "known issues" as no software package is perfect. Your biggest issue will probably be the learning curve but you can overcome that.
