Imovie quicktime sharing questions

Sorry for the newbie question, but i need to know how to export only a portion of a video to a quicktime movie.
I have a 25 minute iMovie project that I have already burned to disc and am finished editing. I am very pleased with the result and would like to post a small sample of this video onto an iWeb movie page, perhaps 5 minutes or less runtime and not necessarily the opening 5 minutes...I am not sure what the best way to do this is so that i can still retain all the sound and editing...
I have checked into the Share feature but it seems to only allow me to create a quicktime based on the entire project (which would turn into quite a large file)
Thanks in advance for anyone that may have insight into this task.

Thanks for the speedy reply... the Mac community NEVER sleeps!
Hi dest,
in the expert settings I would....
a) choose mp4 as compressor
b) reduce size... mp4 is a very good compressor, even when your audience will "blow up" while playback, it looks.... ok. 320 for web is BIG, even 160pix can look nice (by 2x in playback)
c) try a framerate of 15fps
d) reduce audio quality, mono, 22KHz or less... do you need audio anyhow?
in the expert settings of mpeg4, you'll find a slider "bitrate"... the more to the left, the lower the quality and lower the size (you've guessed THAT)... in case, you have enough time, do some test-renderings. AND: don't forget to take notes about your settings for next time ;-)) how did I manage that??
you have to make the other settings first, before playing with bitrates (a smaller res needs a smaller bitrate etc)

  • IMovie Video Sharing

How can I transfer videos between my iPhone4 to my iPad2?
I've tried using DropBox and WhatsApp, but quality is really affected.
Can this be done in iPhoto via iTunes?
    Really stuck :\
    Thanks Guys!

    Ok, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Load up iPhoto, and connect your iPhone. Wait until your iphone appears under devices in iPhoto, and then import relevant videos. You can then export them out of iPhoto (file>export I think) but make sure you change the format to 'original' as it defaults to JPEG even though it is video. Simply drag these items either into itunes or the iMovie file sharing box, you will be able to access it anyhow.
Sorry for the confusion again, any more questions please contact me.

    Hi there,
this is a Family Sharing question. After we upgraded to family sharing, and I now have a new apple id, I find that all the documents on my iPad in pages,  are only accessible if i sign in with the original apple id- now my husband's ( he is the primary account holder). Is there an easy way to migrate these documents to my iCloud account, or do i need to email them to myself . There are a couple of hundred documents.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Thankyou for the reply.
No. I have tried twice. When I turn off pages in the iCloud settings while logged into his account, then my documents in pages just are gone. They return when I turn it back on.
Is there another way I can save them to the device?

  • Can you go on Facebook while IMovie is sharing your project to Facebook?

So I'm always sharing my videos to Facebook, and I always have to wait. But that's what I'm asking...can you go on Facebook while IMovie is sharing your project to Facebook?
also, go check my youtube channel here:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/randomlaughtercrew/videos
    lol thanks

Of course. Why wouldn't you be able to? All you're doing is waiting on iMovie. Facebook isn't doing anything.

  • My iPhoto app has disappeared and my iMovie has a question mark through it!?

I went to go onto my iphoto app on my macbook pro today and realised it was missing and imovie has a question mark on the app and won't let me open it can any help me get it back please? I haven't messed with it nor deleted it so haven't got a clue where it has gone or what's happened. I don't want to pay for it as its not cheap and I had it for free on the mac so don't see why I should by it.
    Thanks in advance

I've managed to get them back for all the other people who are having the same problem go onto the app store on your Mac and once it loaded click 'Purchases' with a little price tag by it and look for it in the list and it should be there for you to install it again for free

  • Quicktime 7 pro export h.264 better than iMovie quicktime setting?

Hi, wondering if anybody knows if Quicktime 7 pro will export h.264 files (mp4) with better quality than going thru iMovie 11 and using the Quicktime plugin? The results are ok with iMovie but wondering if Quicktime 7 Pro would export better as a standalone unit? Looking to make super small files from chopped up dvd's that will play on all mobile devices..Been using baseline profile setting in iMovie Quicktime plugin so it plays on iPhone 3g as well..  Thanks everyone!

I am trying to create very small files from a DVD , just simple chopping the DVD up into sections...when I use Handbrake to rip the DVD to a small h.264 (mp4) file the quality is surprisingly good...if I rip a higher quality mp4 to use in iMovie the export to smaller h.264 files don't look nearly as good when trying to get files sizes equivalent to Handbrake...I have tried ripping the highest quality video from DVD to use in iMovie '11 but when trying to export using QuickTime plugin to get h.264 (mp4) files they don't look that good...basically if Handbrake had editing capabilities the chopped up files would look better from there...
You are experiencing a process of diminishing returns by continuously re-compressing the video from less efficient codecs to more efficient/same efficiency codecs at the same or lower data rates which tends to degrade quality with each re-compression. My recommendation would be to purchase the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) and use it with MPEG Streamclip for your work flow. (Note: If you are using Lion, the component installer won't work correctly and you will either have the use the Squared-5 beta utility to install the package or install the codec manually.)
A better work flow would be to load the DVD titles (VOB file data) to MPEG Streamclip and edit the content there in its native MPEG-2/AC3 or MPEG-2/PCM compression format. You can set in/out points the same as using QT 7 Pro and save the segments as separate files using an alpha-numeric filename convention denoting the order in which you later want to merge the segments. Once all segments are saved, just drop all of them simultaneously back to the MPEG Streamclip work window and they will be merged in the proper alpha-numeric order. You can then fix "timecode breaks" and export the final product to your targeted compression format. Since you only re-compress the project once, depending on the codec/settings you use, your final file should approach the quality achieved in HandBrake. I.e., this is the main benefit of editing in the original "native" codec used in the DVD content.

  • Home Sharing Question # 1001

I know there are a lot of Home Sharing questions but haven't found the answer to this.
My wife and I have been able to share movies and music but not apps. She is on a PC and I am on a Mac.Not sure if that would make a difference.

  • Many iMovie to DVD Questions

OK, guys, I'm in over my head here.
Working on the 3-night project shot last week. Will be making DVDs out of this project. Shot with HV30 in 30P mode, last night in Cine, too. Film noise/grain PLUS not best audio first 2 nights because shooting from too far away & bad lighting.
    1. For making DVDs, is it best to use iMovie HD6, 08, 09 (bought, but not installed yet), (or even FCE4-no experience with this at all, but have access)?
    2. Every time I've used iMovie HD6 or 08 in the past, when it gets to iDVD 08 it turns my Widescreen footage to Standard (I'm playing it on a Standard TV & want letterboxing) although it's Widescreen when testing iDVD project before burning. How do I keep it Widescreen??? This has been driving me crazy for awhile.
    3. As for sound, I tried boosting in iMovie HD 6 and it didn't sound that great. In iMovie 08, I remember you can boost up to 200% and normalize. Does that turn out better and is it worth the tradeoff if the final product (DVD) doesn't have as good picture quality as HD 6? For last 2 nights, I also recorded audio on a digital voice recorder. Is it worth it ( and HOW TO do it, no clapboard used) to try to use this audio in conjunction with the video shot and not the audio from the camcorder?
    4. Also, is tonight the time to upgrade and install 09? Or is it going to mess me up too much mid-project and DVD quality not as good and I should wait?
    5. Any plug-ins to reduce film noise/grain?
    6. Finally, what settings in iMovie 08 & 09 are best for exporting when final product is DVD? Been very confused with the Apple Forums discussion boards threads on "deinterlacing is not deinterlacing."
Phew! Sorry for so many questions. Anxiously awaiting the new iMovie 09: The Missing Manual!
    Thanks, Deborah
PS crossposting in both iMovie HD 6 AND iMovie 09 Forums.

    Hi
+1. For making DVDs, is it best to use iMovie HD6, 08, 09 (bought, but not installed yet), (or even FCE4-no experience with this at all, but have access)?+
For doing a DVD I would only use iMovie HD 6 or FinalCut any version.
If You are not use to FinalCut this can be a *big step up in learning* but when done
    very revarding.
+2. This has been driving me crazy for awhile.+
Not sure but I would make a WideScreeen project in iMovie HD 6 and when done close
iMovie open iDVD and select a 16x9 project then import the iMovie movie project into iDVD (icon with a Star on it)
(I never use the "Share(Export to iDVD" function in iMovie
One can force Letterboxing by starting a 4x3DV project, then import a still photo that
locks it to this. Now import Your 16x9 video and it will be forced into letterboxed 4x3.
Burning this as a 4x3 DVD should keep it letterboxed.
+3. Is it worth it ( and HOW TO do it, no clapboard used) to try to use this audio in conjunction with the video shot and not the audio from the camcorder?+
    To increase audio volume -
    • Select video clip
    • Goto Advance then down to Extract Audio
    • Increase this to 150%
    • Select original video clip and restore audio to 150% too
    Now You got 300%
If You need more then copy the audio clip and paste it ontop of itself as many time as needed
Quality. Increasing = more audio problems.
alt. is to export out audio (as QT .aiff) and adjust it in an another program as
"Audacity" (free) or in SoundSoap™ if You got ayn this (or by all means use GarageBand)
    Sync.
To sync external audio recorders - Tough often near impossibly. The device has
to have a TimeCode to be able to keep sync. There are no easy solution as I know of.
+4. Also, is tonight the time to upgrade and install 09? Or is it going to mess me up too much mid-project and DVD quality not as good and I should wait?+
I would not - neither iMovie'08 or 09 will work optimal if You want a DVD as result.
I NEVER change anything Mid-project (Mac OS, QuickTime or program version)
    +5. Any plug-ins to reduce film noise/grain?+
Don't think so but by exporting out or using FinalCut there are good tools in
QuickTime, GarageBand, Audacity, SoundSoap and FinalCut
    Take a look into
    Stupendous software http://www.stupendous-software.com
    GeeThree http://www.geethree.com
    cf/x. http://www.imovieplugins.com
    Apple http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/ezediapluginsforimovievol1.html

+6. Finally, what settings in iMovie 08 & 09 are best for exporting when final product is DVD? Been very confused with the Apple Forums discussion boards threads on "deinterlacing is not deinterlacing."+
DE-interlacing is not the problem - It is that both 08 and 09 delete every second line
when going to iDVD. Sharpness is degraded. iMovie HD or FinalCut doesn't do so but
    let You have full quality.

  • Exporting SD to HD via imovie quicktime, what is end result?

I am using imovie with youtube...
My camcorder is SD (not HD). However, I have read how you can export to HD using quicktime, and imovie will let you export SD to HD. So, what is the end result? Does it "fill in" the missing data to give you something close to HD? Will YouTube view it as HD even though it is not truely HD?
I actually would have expected imovie to NOT let you export SD to HD, since there is not enough data to be true HD; that is the reason for my questions.
    Thanks
    bob

You'll end up with a very soft looking movie as Quicktime as to interpolate the missing pixels to give you the desired resolution. There is no way to make SD content look like HD. Some upscaling DVD players do a surprisingly good job, but they still have to create the missing pixels.
I don't know if you've ever worked with Photoshop or if you've done much printing, but think of printing a low res 72 dpi image you get off the web. If you try to print a web image as a 4 x 6 on photo paper using a decent inkjet the print will look blocky and lack sharpness. It's kind of like that.

  • Quicktime Newbie Question

I am such an old dog trying to learn new tricks! Two Questions:
    1. If I make my iMovie a QuickTime Vid does it take things out (or copy it just like the iMovie). Sorry didn't even know how to phrase that question! I just keep reading that it compresses it!
    2. Can a DVD with a QuickTime video on it (that I made from my iMovie) be played in a regular DVD player (like you'd have hooked to your TV)? Or does it have to be on a computer, iPod, etc.?
Thank you in advance. I'm so proud to have found these discussions!

    1) any export/'share' is just a copy of your iM project.. your project keeps intact, while your Mac compresses a 'new' file...
    2) a dvd-r could be made to (basicly) two sorts of DVD (=digital versatile disk, not 'video' disk): dataDVD and videoDVD..
using the Finder or the 'back up' feature of iM copies the data onto a .. ehm, dataDVD, which is only readable by a computer...
but, creating the disks with a special format, special coded files and a special file-management.. creates a videoDVD.. all that is called 'encoding', and is done automatically for you by apps as iDVD (.. Toast, and many others...) ...
such a homebrewn videoDVD is playable on any dvd-player...
store your project inside the 'Movies' folder; launching iDVD, it will find the project there, you just have to add a 'menu' ... done. NO need to do any compression by hand...!

  • Home Sharing Questions

    Hello,
I have two questions regarding home sharing while I am on vacation. I understand that if I am not on the same network, I will not have access to my files on my iMac or my PC, however, I do have two questions:
    1. If my iMac and my iPad are signed into the same VPN, will home sharing work if I am on vacation? Both my iMac and my iPad will be signed on to the same server.
    2. I have Xfinity as my Internet provider, and they provide hotspots all over the country that are free for me to use. Since my iMac/PC are on thee Xfinity newtwork, if I sign into the Xfinity hotspot while, say in Maine and my equipment is in Florida, will home sharing work?
My fear is that I must be logged into the same network ID, and they will not be available to me. However, I do have two Network ID's (one is a 2.4Ghz and the other is a 5GHz and they have different names, and Home Sharing does work if my AppleTV is on one and the iMac/PC/iPad is on the other.
The same questions I guess will apply to my AppleTV device, however, if I can get access to my Home Sharing on my iPad, which along with my AppleTV device, I will be bringling with me, I can always change the airplay to play on the AppleTV from my iPad.
Even though I have a WIFI Seagate drive that I use as both a backup and storage for my photos (I am a professional photojournalist) I have all my iTunes files backed up on that device (good thing because if an artist pulls their work from iTunes and you store it Apple's Cloud, it will be deleted) and had I not had a backup, all the Celtic Woman concert videos (close to $60 worth) would be gone
Anyway. thanks for taking your time to read this and considered answering.
    George McGinn
    Venice, FL
PS. These questions are important for me as I plan to spend 3 months every year traveling throughout the country doing street photography and travel photography as I also shoot stock for Getty Images, so if my movies and music are especially my Home Movies (I have instructional videos and PDF files in iBooks that I may need access to) are not going to be available, I would hate to drag my desktop with me. I will take my WIFI drive and use its player to play my music, as while I can change the directories on my iMac to point to the external drive, I do not know of a way to do this on my iPad.
If I get a travel trailer to use instead of staying in hotels, I may just bring my iMac with me. But I really would like to leave it save in my house.

The answer to both questions is no.
It only automatically syncs new purchases from the iTunes Store between devices, and even then only tracks purchased after the option has been turned on. It won't do a catch up sync to start with.
Non iTunes Store purchased tracks have to be imported manually.
You can view all the tracks that are in the source library but not in the target library.
Then select them all and hit the import button.
All that will do though is transfer the music, it will not move playlists, etc.

  • Personal File Sharing question

    Hi,
I have a question about personal file sharing between my iMac Intel (my work computer) and an eMac (student work computer). I work at a college, and our regular back-up system on campus is just not worthwhile, so as a secondary back-up, I created a new account on the eMac (the student computer). I have already successfully accessed the regular student account via personal file sharing (it shows up on the network under the office name given to the computer), but is there a way that I can also connect directly into my new account on the eMac? Is there something that I need to do to make the separate accounts visible?
    Thanks,
    Ken

I'll try to access this from a Windows PC from the internet first (then try with ubuntu)
That requires much more work, like finding Outside IP, Port Forwarding, etc., try it locally first.
    1) System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Windows Sharing.
    2) Browser won't get you to File Sharing, that would be for System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Personal Web Sharing.
    3) By default the Shared folder is shared, but you can log in as the Mac's User & see all that the Mac User can, or Sharepoints for smb...
    http://lowendmac.com/mac2win/04/0623.html
    Get Sharepoints...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
And setup what you wish to share with whom.

  • Library Sharing question

    Hi
I am not even sure if this is possible
I have a desktop PC (Vista & iTunes 8) and all my music is on an external 250gb hd.
I have successfully managed to share this library with my laptop (again Vista & iTunes 8)over my wireless network. None of the music is actually on the hd of the laptop.
My question is , is it possible to edit the song info on the laptop?
    Regards
    Graeme

Yes. That itunes sharing feature lets folks in dorms & offices share music.
So, itunes is not going to let you edit somebody else's library. In this case the other library also belongs to you, but iTunes doesn't know that.
You have to make the changes on your desktop PC.
