Imovie, quicktime

Hope someone can help. Every time i launch imovie or quicktime, an error box pops up that states: application unexpectantly quit. reopen, report, etc.

How much free space do you have on your hard drive? While Apple states a minimum of 10 GB, the veteran users on this forum strongly recommend at least 20 GB.
Give this basic remedy a try. Quit iMovie and delete your iMovie preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.imovie.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iMovie; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
If that doesn't work, do a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.
I hope this helps.

  • Quicktime 7 pro export h.264 better than iMovie quicktime setting?

Hi, wondering if anybody knows if Quicktime 7 pro will export h.264 files (mp4) with better quality than going thru iMovie 11 and using the Quicktime plugin? The results are ok with iMovie but wondering if Quicktime 7 Pro would export better as a standalone unit? Looking to make super small files from chopped up dvd's that will play on all mobile devices..Been using baseline profile setting in iMovie Quicktime plugin so it plays on iPhone 3g as well..  Thanks everyone!

I am trying to create very small files from a DVD , just simple chopping the DVD up into sections...when I use Handbrake to rip the DVD to a small h.264 (mp4) file the quality is surprisingly good...if I rip a higher quality mp4 to use in iMovie the export to smaller h.264 files don't look nearly as good when trying to get files sizes equivalent to Handbrake...I have tried ripping the highest quality video from DVD to use in iMovie '11 but when trying to export using QuickTime plugin to get h.264 (mp4) files they don't look that good...basically if Handbrake had editing capabilities the chopped up files would look better from there...
You are experiencing a process of diminishing returns by continuously re-compressing the video from less efficient codecs to more efficient/same efficiency codecs at the same or lower data rates which tends to degrade quality with each re-compression. My recommendation would be to purchase the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) and use it with MPEG Streamclip for your work flow. (Note: If you are using Lion, the component installer won't work correctly and you will either have the use the Squared-5 beta utility to install the package or install the codec manually.)
A better work flow would be to load the DVD titles (VOB file data) to MPEG Streamclip and edit the content there in its native MPEG-2/AC3 or MPEG-2/PCM compression format. You can set in/out points the same as using QT 7 Pro and save the segments as separate files using an alpha-numeric filename convention denoting the order in which you later want to merge the segments. Once all segments are saved, just drop all of them simultaneously back to the MPEG Streamclip work window and they will be merged in the proper alpha-numeric order. You can then fix "timecode breaks" and export the final product to your targeted compression format. Since you only re-compress the project once, depending on the codec/settings you use, your final file should approach the quality achieved in HandBrake. I.e., this is the main benefit of editing in the original "native" codec used in the DVD content.

  • Clarity into IMovie, quicktime, FCP

    Hi there:
I've just been handed a PPT which I moved to Keynote. My task is to take the material, add a scripted voice and background music. So I thought the route would be to export the slides to Imovie or FCP. When I exported to Imovie, the text was not as clear as in Keynote.
So to make this presentation with two sound sources, should I make a single sound track of the right length for the sldes (which means I'll need to determine each slide length toward the total project) and stay inside Keynote, or is there a way to export with more clarity (I tried the jpg, tiff and pdf, and they all had the quality loss). Or should I find some other method?
Also, should I use IDVD to put the final product on DVD or Toast Titanium? I do not want all the themes, etc.: just the video.
    Thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.5 mhz

Don't need anything that complicated! To add music to
the entire slideshow(instead of seperatly in each
slide) just go to -->Inspector --> Document (the
first on the left) chose Document (not Spotlight). In
the bottom you have an Audio field. You can either
add a song file by dragging and dropping or selecting
it in you iTunes. You can make a song loop, only
    once, or nothing.
I had the exact problem (music problem) but it's
there in front of our noses...
The thing is, when you export your keynote file to
QuickTime, 2 files will be created: the movie, and
the soundtrack. If you want to simplify the whole
thing use just the movie one and add music manually
(you must have QuickTime Pro for that) by opening the
song file in QuickTime, selecting in the timeline
what part of the song you want to copy, then copy,
and paste in on the movie, placing it in the
    timeline.
    Hope that was helpfull
    Hugs and kisses
    CV
    Hey:
thanks for the note. Soundwise, however, I still have a problem in Keynote because I need to add 2 audio tracks: one for the music and one for the narration. Keynote offers me one track.
    any thoughts?
    thanks

  • IMovie Quicktime Output Whitewashed on PC

I'm seeing something strange when I output my iMovie HD output to Quicktime. It works just fine on the Quicktime 7 player on my MacBook Pro. But the Quicktime Player on a Dell PC (Windows XP) is displaying the .mov file nearly completely whited out. Is there a trick to this? I know the Quicktime Player on the PC works fine in most circumstances, but I had to output the movie to AVI (yuk) so I could get the movies to my target audience.

    Sue,
An interesting article, but since it applies to QT playback on Macs, it probably doesn't diretly apply to viewing his clip on a PC.
However the QT CODEC used and color profile used probably ARE where his problem lies.
    hajush,
What QuickTime encoding did you use? If yoy can't remember, open the clip in the QuickTime Player on a Mac and select Window>Show Movie Info

  • Importing a  .mov into imovie -quicktime error -2048

I recorded with imovie-isight (1,5Gb) , stopped recording, and then restarted powerbook without saving. After restart .mov -file was in trash-folder. I dragged file onto desktop, afterwards into movies-file. I tried importing, dragging, double clicking on file, with no result(imovie- itunes- quicktime) I get a error text: file.mov cannot be imported because quicktime cannot process file (-2048) (translated from dutch-the words might not be correct)
Can anyone help me to recover this movie? -osx 10.4.8/imovie 6.0.3 on powerbook 1GHz
    Thanks!
    G4-1,67   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The file was improperly "closed" and required data is missing from the file.
It would be easier to trash the file and start again than to try and "fix" it with a Hex editor.

  • Trouble opening iMovie Quicktime file

    Hello,
I recently upgraded from FCE to FCP. I have just attempted to import a Quicktime movie created in iMovie to FCP. This always worked fine in FCE, but now once it is imported, if i try to do anything with it, whether I want to put it in the timeline or simply play it in the viewer, it gives me warnings saying "General Error" and "Error: Out of Memory." Does anyone know what's going on with this?

    Patrick,
Are you talking about importing "clips" captured in iMovie or a .MOV that you exported from iMovie? As long as you export your movie as NTSC you should have no problem, I do it all the time.
You can also drag "clips" which were captured via iMovie directly into the PCP browser. You'll have to render the audio though - if you don't need the audio just delete it and get to work.
    good luck

  • IMovie QuickTime Error Message

I'm using IMovie 7.11 with OS X 10.4.11. Thought that QuickTime Pro was not working so I deleted anything that Finder could find when I typed in OuickTime. Reinstalled QuickTime Pro 7. Now when I open IMovie, I get an error message that I'm "Missing QuickTime components that are necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies". I downloaded IMove, reinstalled, restarted, and I still get the error message. How do I fix this?

Only in the Mac environment would this be so easy and elegant. I did the archive reinstall and not only did all my applications run appropriately but everything else was there (e.g. flags on pictures in IPhoto, all my saved mail, etc. Thanks for your good advice!

  • Exporting SD to HD via imovie quicktime, what is end result?

I am using imovie with youtube...
My camcorder is SD (not HD). However, I have read how you can export to HD using quicktime, and imovie will let you export SD to HD. So, what is the end result? Does it "fill in" the missing data to give you something close to HD? Will YouTube view it as HD even though it is not truely HD?
I actually would have expected imovie to NOT let you export SD to HD, since there is not enough data to be true HD; that is the reason for my questions.
    Thanks
    bob

You'll end up with a very soft looking movie as Quicktime as to interpolate the missing pixels to give you the desired resolution. There is no way to make SD content look like HD. Some upscaling DVD players do a surprisingly good job, but they still have to create the missing pixels.
I don't know if you've ever worked with Photoshop or if you've done much printing, but think of printing a low res 72 dpi image you get off the web. If you try to print a web image as a 4 x 6 on photo paper using a decent inkjet the print will look blocky and lack sharpness. It's kind of like that.

  • Imovie quicktime sharing questions

Sorry for the newbie question, but i need to know how to export only a portion of a video to a quicktime movie.
I have a 25 minute iMovie project that I have already burned to disc and am finished editing. I am very pleased with the result and would like to post a small sample of this video onto an iWeb movie page, perhaps 5 minutes or less runtime and not necessarily the opening 5 minutes...I am not sure what the best way to do this is so that i can still retain all the sound and editing...
I have checked into the Share feature but it seems to only allow me to create a quicktime based on the entire project (which would turn into quite a large file)
Thanks in advance for anyone that may have insight into this task.

Thanks for the speedy reply... the Mac community NEVER sleeps!
    Hi dest,
in the expert settings I would....
    a) choose mp4 as compressor
    b) reduce size... mp4 is a very good compressor, even when your audience will "blow up" while playback, it looks.... ok. 320 for web is BIG, even 160pix can look nice (by 2x in playback)
    c) try a framerate of 15fps
    d) reduce audio quality, mono, 22KHz or less... do you need audio anyhow?
in the expert settings of mpeg4, you'll find a slider "bitrate"... the more to the left, the lower the quality and lower the size (you've guessed THAT)... in case, you have enough time, do some test-renderings. AND: don't forget to take notes about your settings for next time ;-)) how did I manage that??
you have to make the other settings first, before playing with bitrates (a smaller res needs a smaller bitrate etc)

  • IMovie, Quicktime and my desktop

How do i move an iMovie project from my desktop back into iMovie, then export it to my USB using quicktime? help please! my projects due tomorrow!! (:

First, right click on the project file on your desktop and click GET INFO. If it has an RCPROJECT file extension, you can move it back into iMovie by dragging it to the MOVIES/iMOVIE PROJECTS folder.
Then, open iMovie. You should see this project in the project library. You can use the SHARE menu to export a final movie.
If it is not an RCPROJECT file, tell us what it is.

  • IMovie QuickTime Component Error Message

I keep getting the error "The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install." Reinstall didn't work. What should I do?

Someone else on the Discussion Board was a getting an error somewhat similar to this (QuickTime components/codecs missing). I found there was a downloadable installer listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1396
Try downloading it and installing it, maybe it will get some results.

  • Fcp express vs imovie quicktime conversion

In Final Cut Express it is possible to export a single frame from a movie and then use is as a image for a printable DVD or a DVD cover.  Is it possible to do so in iMovie (9.0.4) or later?

Thanks.  That's disappointing.  I wish, also, there were more flexibility when it comes to saving projects.

  • Imovie/quicktime video on blog

I am looking to add a slideshow/with music-created in imovie (so I guess this is a video..according to tech support I just spoke with) to my blog. I was successful, and got the link to the video thru .mac, but its really tiny. Meaning its about 1 inch in size. (sorry dont know the specs)
So I spoke with someone who showed me how to customize the size of the QT video, and that was great, but I wasnt able to get THAT video onto .mac. So I spoke with someone else who basically told me that I wouldnt be able to make the video larger on my blog.
Is this true? Do I need to again create the slideshow in another 3rd party program to get a larger sized slideshow I can play on the blog?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks
    Brandi

Is this true? Do I need to again create the slideshow in another 3rd party program to get a larger sized slideshow I can play on the blog?
No, not if you are creating your video blob with iWeb and set the display to either the original size or scale it to the display size you want. If you are posting content to your gallery account, then the browser display size is controlled by your sharing choice in iMovie (unless you re-code web page manually).
