IMovie REALLY Slow

I have recently been encountering problems with iMovie. When I import a file into a project in "DV" format. It takes about 75 minutes. I have no problem with that. However, the file that I import is in MPEG-4 format. I realized that I could be saving myself time and disk space by importing the file into an iMovie project in "MPEG-4" format. The file imports fine, but that's where the problems start. Trying to edit the imported file in the "MPEG-4" iMovie project in a nightmare! It takes 30 seconds or more just to split a clip at the video playhead. The playhead will not move smoothly when I drag it using my mouse, whereas it moves smoothly in projects created in "DV" format. When I try to move forward or backward frame-by-frame using the arrow keys, it is really slow to respond. I have plently of free memory and there is no CPU intensive task going on while I am trying to do this. I do not experience any of these problems with iMovie projects in different formats (ex: HDV, DV Widescreen, DV, and iSight). This leads me to believe it's a software issue, but I haven't been able to solve it yet. My post in the iMac forum:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4171998#4171998
suggests that it's a fragmented HDD that's the problem, but my iMac is just fine. It isn't slow at all. Even iMovie isn't slow when editing in other formats. Only in "MPEG-4" format do I encounter these issues. Any help is appreciated.
Trevor

Yes, it's much larger (in bytes), but DV lends itself to editing, while MPEG (1, 2 and 4) does NOT.
Hi Lennart,
Is this because the compressed formats generally require "on the fly" decompression and recompression to allow editing? (I've been trying to follow up on Trevor's problem and can find quite a few comments on the net indicating that people are having similar problems with slow editing of Mpeg-4 in iMovie, but can't find anywhere with a good explanation of the reasons for it).
Cheers
Rod

  • Apple tv streams my iMovies really slow

Anyone have a suggestion on why my imovie projects take so long to stream to apple tv? i photo slide show's, Netflix etc stream fine.

Are all the device on wi-fi?
The more wi-fi devices the more the bandwidth is shared - photos need less than video and Netflix would be a single AppleTV to router connection so might not use as much bandwidth as streaming from computer to router to AppleTV. Also Netflix adapts quality for slow connections whereas your imovie projects may be far higher bitrate.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

  • IPhoto 6 goes really, really slow

    Hi,
my iPhoto 6 is going really, really slow, and as soon as I open iPhoto 6 other open programs go slow too. First I thought it must be the size of the pics but with other Photo editing programs everything seems to go with normal speed.
Has anyone got a solution to this problem? Has anyone made similar experiences? What kind of procedures would you recommend?
Thank you very much in advance for your help!
    Kind Regards,
    Xbal

Actually, according to the System Requirements, 256mb is the bare minimum of RAM for OS X and iLife 6. I know this is true because (check my specs) I run with this, and my iPhoto library has 5,000 photos. But yes, it is slow. Switching between iPhoto and Safari takes a minute. Photoshop Elements 4 is even slower. I hope to upgrade to a gig soon, and I refuse to run the iLife and Quicktime updates before then. Anyway, the latest QT update is just too buggy.
But my point is, it does work. I have made several movies in iMovie and iDVD and even burned the DVDs. I don't see how 512mb would cause the Mac to grind to a halt.

  • IMovie Unbearably Slow

For the past few weeks I've noticed iMovie has been really slow. I keep having to force quit it.
It's using up 100% of my CPU.
Importing/Exporting seems normal though. It's just that whenever I press buttons like 'All Projects' or 'All Events' is give me the spinning beach ball of death and I have to restart iMovie. I've not been able to edit any video because any minor adjustment causes it to not respond. Oddly enough it's not using too much RAM though, only about half GB at most.
    Specs:
    8GB of RAM
    Intel Core i7

Snow introduces three types of QuickTime.
    1) The new QT X player is used as a replacement -- sort of -- to the old QT Player.
    2) To support FCP and iMovie there is a QT Framework -- which may also support QT X.
    3) There is a version of the previous QT Player you can install.
It appears that while FCP was checked out to work under Snow, the same was not done with iMovie 09.
All folks can do is wait for Apple to release a fix to Snow and/or iMovie 09.

  • Can IMovie really do it?

I find something very interesting missing from the many postings here. Has anyone in fact imported HD footage and then edited in HD in IMovie? If so, please tell us about it. How long did it take? What was the differences when editing HD in IMovie vs DV footage? How about those Gee Three plug-ins. Did they work fine while editing in HD?
The bottom line.....Can IMovie really edit HD footage and produce a clean HD movie? Is Apple just hyping when they say you can editing in HD in IMovie?
    Emac   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Yup; I edit HDV with iMovie HD (5 and now 6).
As Karl suggests, d'you really think it'd be called iMovie HD if it couldn't? ..And would the Sony man have jumped up on the stage with Steve J at MacWorld the other year to push the Sony FX1 camcorder if it couldn't?
..OK; I know iMovie 3 couldn't edit video properly, to start with ..but yes: you can edit HDV with iMovie HD. The results are beautiful.
There are, however, a few things to bear in mind:
1 - The faster your Mac, the faster iMovie will work with HDV footage. The Mac has to convert, on the fly, from the MPEG-2 format of HDV into the DV/QuickTime format which iMovie uses ..while you're importing. On my Mac mini and G4 PowerBooks that meant that importing the footage from the camcorder took twice or three times 'real time' to import ..sometimes 4x real time. So importing can be -s-l-o-w- ..That's why I eventually got a faster Mac, after checking out import speeds at the London Apple Store on their hardware. I bought the fastest Mac I could which was also a PowerPC. So I got a quad G5, with 4GB of RAM. This imports HDV in real time, so importing is exactly like importing normal DV. No faster, no slower: identical.
2 - Editing in HDV is exactly like editing in normal DV ..in fact it's the same as normal DV once it's imported and temporarily converted into Apple's Intermediate Codec format. Everything works just like normal: transitions, titles, importing pictures and sound, etc. Rendering titles and transitions, etc, took longer than normal DV on the G4 Mac mini and PowerBooks ..but that's not surprising, as every HDV frame has about 4x the information or detail in it. Rendering is back to the speeds of normal DV using the G5 quad.
3 - Outputting back to a camcorder is just like with normal DV ..except that it takes a LOT longer! ..The edited material has to be converted by the Mac from the temporary Apple Intermediate Codec format back into "Long-GOP MPEG-2" format to send to the camcorder ..and that took, on those G4 Macs, about 10x real time. So an hour of video had to be left overnight to Export back to a camcorder. On the G5 quad I've got that down to under 2x real time by (a) using a faster Mac, (b) keeping projects on a second internal disc, instead of on the main system disc or on a - slower - external FireWire disc, (c) using the fastest possible (10,000rpm) internal disc (..a 74GB Western Digital 'Raptor' ..there is a later, higher capacity - 150GB? - version, but that - reportedly - may presently have problems in a Mac, without a separate controller card to drive it). I intend to 'RAID' or to 'stripe' two of these WDs together, when the appropriate controller card arrives, to give what promises to be even faster disc access, and that may cut the export time even further, to perhaps around 1.5x real time.
I haven't yet used GeeThree plug-ins with HD footage: I tend to be rather conservative with my transitions, and just use simple things - usually - like cross dissolves, Fade In and Fade Out and - especially - Wash In and Wash Out. GeeThree (see their site) could probably give you more info about their plug-ins for HDV.
iMovie 6 originally gave very badly jerking PAL DV output to camcorders, as if it was sending NTSC 30fps video instead of PAL 25fps. Matti pointed this up, and the 6.0.1 update was very quickly posted, and has fixed that problem. (If you only use American-style NTSC video, you probably wouldn't have noticed this oddity.)
"..Can IMovie really edit HD footage and produce a clean HD movie?.." Yes, absolutely. I haven't got round to exporting any as QuickTime H.264 and putting it up on the web, but I shall eventually (..sometimes I have other things to do besides fiddling with video..!) and then you'll see - roughly - what it looks like.
"..Is Apple just hyping when they say you can editing in HD in IMovie?.." No. They're absolutely correct. But you do need a fast Mac to make the most of it, so that importing, rendering and - especially - exporting don't take t-o-o -l-o-n-g-

  • Photoshop CS6 won't launch and when it does it's really slow...help?

    Hi,
So my copy of Photoshop CS6 sometimes won't launch and when it does manage to launch fully, it's really slow. I mean ridiculously slow. The only times when I can get it to run even remotely quick is if I shut down my computer, and then restart it and then start up Photoshop CS6 as the first program. Even then it slows down after a while. (And I only have a firefox browser open usually, never more than a couple of tabs at once, so it's not a bandwidth issue)
    Here are my comp specs:
    Samsung
    Processor:
    AMD A6-3420M APU with
Radeon (Tm) HD graphics 1.50 ghz
    Installed Memory (RAM) - 4.00 (3.48 usable)
64 Bit operating System running on Windows 7 home premium, service pack 1
I also did just recently install the new update Adobe had for Photoshop, so that's up to date.
It's getting really frustrating! I have another program I'm using in the meantime (Paint tool Sai), but I'd really like to use Photoshop CS6.....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure you updated the drivers from AMD's website, not Microsoft.
Make sure you are running the 64 bit version of Photoshop, not 32 bit.
Disable all third party plugins, and try disabling system utilities (we've seen font managers, antivirus, disk backup software, etc. cause slowdowns due to bugs in those utilities).

  • Installation OIM on redhat Linux really slow

    Hello,
I have a problem with the installation of OIM. When I try to install OIM on a linux server (redhat 5.0 64b) with the JRockit 64bits java 1.6.0 (jrmc 3.2.1-1.6.0) version the installer is just really slow. It takes ages for the command line installer to go to the next step.
has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?
    greetings,
    Bas

The machine on which OIM is to be installed has enough memory, I believe it has 8GB..
The weird thing is that the first time we ran the installer, it was just normal (== fast) but the installation failed when deploying OIM into Weblogic and we can't run the weblogic deploy script, since this also fails.. (it throws a nameError: fail on the configoim.py script) That's when we decided to try to install OIM again from scratch.. so we moved the current installation directory to another location and started the installation again. This when the problems as decribed by Bas began.. The installer is really really slow.. we waited for more then 15 minutes for it to continue to the next step.. but it didn't. We checked the machine for spiking processes but the machine was totally idle..
Does anyone know what could be the problem? Are we doing anything wrong? or are we missing something?

  • My iMac is running REALLY slow - could my hard disc be dying?

    I have a 27" iMac with a Core i7 chip and 8GB of RAM.
It has always worked really fast with absolutely everything I have tried with it.
It worked fast in Snow Leopard. I upgraded it to Lion in September and it still worked fast (though a tiny bit slower perhaps than Snow Leopard).
In the last week, the machine's speed has slowed to an absolute crawl and I am almost constantly getting the spinning beach ball.
By a crawl, I mean that opening iTunes can take five minutes. Opening the Applications folder inside Finder can take five minutes. During times of this slowness, the spinning beach ball animates and I can move the mouse cursor, but I cannot get any response from the machine.
The machine is so slow that it is basically unuseable - I cannot wait five minutes to open a document!
What is really odd is that the computer will be really slow for 4-5 minutes, and then for perhaps 40 seconds or so I will get maybe one minute where things work at normal speed, before the speed drops back to a crawl.
Even restarting the computer takes an age.
My theory is that something in the computer has malfunctioned - either the motherboard or the hard disc.
I have run a few disc utilities (Disk Utility, Apple Hardware Diagnostic, TechTool 5), and the SMART status of the hard disc appears to be good and all reports check back successfully - although they all take longer than I'd expect. Whether that means the hard disc is really fine or not, I'm not clear.
I had one other hard disc die on me once, and that just died and was gone, but if my hard disc is dying then the problem it is showing is intermittent, i.e. it is only working part of the time.
At present I am making a backup of the iMac hard disc by having booted the iMac in Firewire Target Disk mode and manually copying files across. However, so far it has only managed 1GB of about 432GB and is estimating that it will take 2 days to complete the task.
Has anybody got any advice - is the hard disc or the motherboard a likely culprit?
The machine is under warranty at least, but I can't figure out whether to drag the machine into an Apple Store, or to phone AppleCare and get them to pick it up. If the machine would be repaired while I waited at the Apple Store then that would be great but I doubt this would happen.
    Any advice?
P.S. I checked for runaway processes... nothing to find in Activity Monitor. CPU is about 5% max. Lots of free RAM. Hard disc is only half full.

How do you load lion onto an exteranl disk and boot from it as I would like to give that a try.
I presume its an external usb drive?
    thanks
    Hi,
I used an external hard disc - Western Digital MyBook 500GB drive.
All you do is run the Lion installer, which you can redownload from the Mac App Store if you've bought it. As part of the Lion installer it asks which drive you want to install to.
To save having to redownload the Lion installer every time, once the download has completed from the Mac App Store, but before you have run the installation process, you can extract the disc image and retain it for future use (if you don't extract the disc image, then it gets deleted at the end of the installation process and you'd have to redownload it again next time).

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.
