Imovie recognises camcorder but no image/sound

Hi there, I have an old SOny dcr-pc103e camcorder and am trying to get the video clips from dv tapes into iMovie via a firewire cable (4to6 on iMac or 4to9 on MAcbook pro). iMovie recognises the camcorder and controls it (play, stop, rewind...) but there's no sound or image playing, just the plain blue screen. I've been trying to find a solution for a few days now but in vain.
I have iMovie 6HD, '08 (crashes though), '09, and '11. I also have Mountain Lion on both computers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The sympthome is scarry - as when I got this the faulth was a blown A/D-chip in this specific camera and a TRV-900E
Yes the symptom was exactly same - I was able to control camera - Forward, etc - BUT no picture or audio.
Expencive repair.
But first read this
NO CAMERA or A/D-box
Cable
• Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
• Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
• Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
A/D-box
• Is the dip-switches set right ?
• Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
• Try resetting it
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
• FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
External device’s (hard disk’s)
• Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
• MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
• GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
• Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
• White MacBooks - don't
• MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
• Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
• Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
• If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
• Screen Saver - OFF
• Energy Saver - OFF
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

Help, My imovie recognised connection but no movie is playing.

I managed to connect my SONY HDTV camcorder to my MAC PRO tower. Opened imovie and imovie said camcorder is connected but there is no picture in imovie. Either video or play back mode the imovie don't show anything even when camera is playing fine. I use the same firewire wire on my older SONY camcorder and imovie sees it. The same wire don't show any picture when hooked to my new SONY HDTV cam. I am so baffled. Can someone tell me why. I need to import these clips urgently to make into a imovie too.

I did some research and found out that I need to disconnect i-Link. Now the video plays in i-Movie. Check this link out from SONY. My SONY is the HDR HC3 model. I hope this will help others encountering the same problem with SONY cams.

Imovie recognizes camcorder, but cannot import

Hi,
iMovie previously worked fine and I've completed several projects, but now its acting weird. When I plug in the camcorder, I only get a blue screen with the "camera connected" message. I can control the camcorder (play, ff, rew), but no video appears and I obviously cannot import. Anyone seen this? Has something gone corrupt or am I overlooking a silly thing?

First-if your mac can control the camera but not see the video,
*Open Garageband
*Play a note or two
*Close Garageband
*Open iMovie
The camera should be recognized now.

Sometimes when working on an imovie projtect, I press space bar to watch it and it comes only the sound, but the image stays as a still frame of the image that is on the screen at that moment. It doesnt show as usually the movie.
Thanks for any help or suggestion.
PD: Maybe too much working on transitions or too many projects for the same event. I dont know. I m surprise with 8 ram and this happening.

My videos have sound...but no image!

I have a really annoying problem in iMovie 08'... like... when I click on a clip, I don't see the video in the screen(at the right)... it stays blck... like all the time...... in fact there's only one project that I can see on the the screen... all my other projects and all of my clips don't appear on the screen... (like... they are in my events... but when i click on them ... they just don't show up... I can still play them, but there's just the sound...)
I also have iMovie HD 6... but I dont want to export again all of my videos and start some of my projects all over again...

I know I'm not that clear... so I took a screen shot

Me again,
A friend suggested that I do a system restore.
I did a search for system restore in Windows 7 and got a very intuitive menu.
I selected an earlier system restore point and executed the restore.
After the computer restart I reloaded Firefox 5.0 and the Ask.com problem was corrected.
My friend says this approach may work about 25% of the time to fix this kind of problem. In my case it worked and I am happy.

Anyway I have tried to find manuals for your TV but without success. This model is not listed on any list I found for manuals.
Best page I found is http://tacpservice.toshiba.com/CONSUMERPRODUCTSUPPORT/Manuals/TVom.asp but your TV is not listed there. Maybe you should visit some TV shop or repair centre and talk with technicians about your problem.

When conected to tv sounds comes through but no image

i conected my ipod to the tv to watch a movie and it worked fine first. but when i switched to watch another one, and later to see photos, the sound wen through fine, but no image could be seen. help....
i pod video Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Videos->Videos Settings->TV OUT->ON.
Also check it is set to NTSC, not PAL.

A small update to this issue....
I have been trawling the forums to find an answer but to no avail...
And... I've tried exporting and bouncing individual stems and the full session, either by muting all bar the stem or soloing the stem.....and still nothing.
Same problems.....everything is audible in audition but nothing plays on playback.
Since the 'prelisten' channel strip is Solo safe this would indicate that you have a track or channel strip soloed somewhere else, out of sight. Are the Mute buttons on your channel strips blinking?
To view all objects in your mixer, click the button. You may have to scroll sideways to check the whole mixer.

IMovie shows video but plays still image!

Just been editing a 20 min project and at one point it has a short video clip followed, after a transition, by another short clip then after a transition by still images.
All looks OK in the project window, but when I skim or play the sequence the second video clip content is ignored and replaced by the content of the still image for the full length of the video clip.
I've deleted these three elements and started again, even reimporting video from the camera, but no change. If I delete just the still image, the problem continues with IMovie playing the next still image instead of the video.
Anyone seen and fixed this?

My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.

I had backed up my iPhoto library from my old mac onto an external drive. When I got my mac book pro this year I could not open the files. The program recognises the folders and opens the rolls but the image is greyed out.

My old power book used an older version of iphoto, when I bought my macbook pro recently I tried to upload, from an external drive, my backed up files. The program opens with all the relevant folders down the left side but none of the image files will open; the boxes that would contain them are there, but greyed out.

I am now using iphoto '11 version 9.4.2, the original images that Im trying to recover from the ext HD are iphoto version 6. The EXT HD is formatted for mac and has been ok for all my other files that have been backed up.
When I boot up iphoto version 11 it looks like it always does and will open my current library of images. If I try to get images from the ext hd in this program the folder info is ok (down the left side) but the image boxes are greyed out.

Macs do not recognise camcorder

Hi, I work in a large school in England we have 12 new v 10.6.2 and FCP v 6.0.1.
We have a sony HDV 1080i HDR-FX7 camcorder and various small handheld sony DCR HC51's and some canon and psonics.
The high end students are making film with the HDV camcorder but we cannot get the footage off the camera.
Students have filmed in standard DV not HDV.
When I Plug the I link cable in this appears on the LCD screen saying that it has been inserted.
I have turned the ilink conv to off and used DV pal in easy set up but it is not recognised. i have also tried 1080I after dumping presets but this does not work either.
Finally I have tried putting the MiniDV's into the smaller cameras. The playback is fine but as soon as I link it to FCP and start capturing the images becomes blocky/pixalated and then stops capturing saying the tape may be damaged and cannot be viewed, however it still plays clearly on all of the cameras.
The camera is also not being recognised in IMovie.
Can anyone help with this?
If not is there another method for me to capture the footage?

Firs trash your preferences, Trying lots of different settings is a good way to corrupt them.
Set the camera to output DV, not auto, not HDV. Set iLink on. iLink is used for DV capture. Connect the camera with no other devices connected (except keyboard and mouse). Set the FCP settings to DV 48k PAL Anamorphic. Is the camera recognized? If no, check System Profiler for your FireWire bus. If yes, open log and capture. What happens?

IDVD copies the movie but not the sound

With IDVD one-step-dvd I try to copy edited movies from a Sony Handycam directly to DVD. Unfortenatly it copies only the images but not the sound. Anybody has the same experience and knows the solution? When I import the movie into IMovie the sound is allright.

Quicktime, Quicktime Pro and iTunes don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.

DW8 says there's no margin, but the image is still 10 or so pixels off

Okay, so I'm new to DW and am using DW8 (what's the newest
version anyway?)
Here's the background and my problem:
I'm working with a graphics designer in redesigning the site
for our non-profit organization, and she has a gradient along the
left side of the page. At the top of the gradient, she has a logo
blends with the gradient. The navigation bar then runs along the
top of the page with drop-down menus designed in Fireworks. It's a
beautiful design, but I'm having trouble getting things to work
properly when I'm importing them into DW.
Once again, I'm new to DW as well as FW, but I'm a quick
learner (i think). I brought these aspects (the gradient, logo,
site name, and nav bar) together in FW. I want these to form the
template for all the pages of the site so I brought them into DW to
do so. However, I need to make sure the background (the gradient)
repeats without the logo repeating. So I exported it separately and
set it as the page background using page properties. I thought that
would be simple enough. However, I can't export just the logo as a
.jpg (which it needs to be in order to look right) without it being
having a white background and no longer blending with the gradient.
So now I thought to myself, that I'd export the whole FW
image (with the gradient, logo, and nav bar) to DW and simply place
it over the gradient background, inserting it as an image, so that
these things show up at the top of the page but the gradient
continues beneath the image. It's been an amazingly frustrating
process, and I know that last idea probably sounds ridiculous to
those more experienced than myself. However, I think it may
actually work. The only problem, and a big one, is that when I
insert the image for the whole FW document (or even for just the
logo itself), even when it says the page has no margins or padding,
it still seems to set this image in and down about 10 pixesls,
making it offset with the gradient background and leaving the edge
of the logo visible (which is supposed to look like it runs off the
page). How can I fix this?
And once it's working, how do I set these two areas, the side
gradient with logo and the top nav bar with site name, to be the
template for the rest of the site with the big open area I have
left on the rest of the page as the editable region? It seems to me
like once I get this set as the template, the rest of the pages
will come together fairly quickly and easily.
Is there another way to do this that would be easier? I'm

testing server to show anyone online, but if you would like to

You need to set 0 margin and padding on the body tag. Copy
the following
into the head of your document just before the closing head
tag (/head>)
Preferably it should go into an external stylesheet, but by
the sounds of
things you are not using this as yet.

Once you have added the above to your page, you need to save
the page as a
Template. You will be asked to create an editable region
(which is the area
that will be changed on each child page created from this
template).
The DW help files do offer some information on how to create
Template
pages - that may be the first stop for you :-)
