IMovie Recognizing iPhone 4 as Camera

I've discovered that you can view iPhone 4 video clips in iMovie by clicking on the iPhoto Video link - but is there a way to get iMovie to recognize the iPhone +as a camera+ so you could import directly an skip the iPhoto step? I would prefer NOT to have most of my video clips cluttering up my iPhoto library.

This is a problem which is not restricted to just the iPhone 4 but seems to apply to many if not all camera phones and point and shoots. Dedicated camcorders are recognized as camcorders and likely to contain video so best to open in iMovie directly. iMovie also recognizes high end still cameras that also shoot HD such as my Panasonic GH1 and open it directly in iMovie.
Perhaps Apple in its wisdom decided that cheaper cameras are likely used by people who are less likely to edit video and might be annoyed or confused by the camera opening in iMovie but I think it more likely that the cause lies in the way camcorders and some high end cameras identify themselves with some telling the computer it is still camera, some saying they are a camcorder and some saying that they are both.
In the case of the iPhone4 Apple makes both the iPhone and iMovie so if it is possible for them to do it they could potentially fix this. I would suggest writing a product feedback asking for the fix here:

  • Recognizing iPhone as a camera.

Today I downloaded the new version of iTunes, and when I plugged in my iPhone, it only came up as a camera, and wouldn't allow me to sync it or do anything really, except for view and upload my pictures from my phone. Help?

    Hi,
Is the Apple Mobile Device Service running on your PC? This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567 will show you how to restart the service.
Is your PC running a 64-bit version of XP? iTunes does not support Windows XP. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1426 provides more information.
What security software is running on the PC? Try to reconfigure, temporarily disable, or uninstall it.

  • IMovie '08: Built-in iSight camera not recognized in Yosemite

    On this page
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS2472
iMovie '08: Built-in iSight camera not recognized
    it says:
    In Finder, navigate to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Select the file com.apple.mio.VDCAssistant.plist and delete.
    Restart your system.
You should now be able to use your iSight camera with iMovie.
However, in Yosemite, it only has this file name
    com.apple.cmio.VDCAssistant.plist
and I don't want to delete it as instructed without someone who knows telling me it won't hurt my newly installed and thus far working well OS 10.10.1, with iMovie 7.1.4 on my iMac 24 inch, Early 2008, 2.8 GHz Intel Dore 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2  SDRAM.  It worked with Leopard, and I don't recall having to use the above mentioned support page.

Contact Apple. I believe you have a hardware issue there if it's not showing up in your System profiler.

  • IPhone 3GS not being recognized as a still camera in Windows

Hi, this is my first post ever!
My problem is that whenever I plug my iPhone 3GS in my PC (running Windows 8 Dev. preview) it isn't recognized as a still camera (or MTP device) so I'm not able to copy photos from the camera roll. The thing is it was working fine until yesterday. Note that iTunes syncing works perfectly. I've tried unistalling the drivers form the Device Manager, I've tried unistalling the USB controllers and then restarting etc. but nothing worked . I really need to fix this problem since I've got a lot of photos to transfer.

Connect it to another computer not running a Beta version of Windows, does it work correctly?
If so, the issue is with Windows.
If not, then you might actually have an issue with the device.

iphone 4S - photoshop elements 9.0 is not recognizing my iphone as a camera - therefore I cannot download pictures from my iphone.
Anyone have any ideas? I've done everything according to the apple website, including uninstalling and reinstalling itunes.
itunes works fine, but I still have this problem.  I have a windows vista 64bit PC.

Are they consistent (is it always the same files that work properly and the same ones that don't)?
Do analyze them with  GSpot and post the images here. That will also answer Bill's question about audio formats.

  • New Mac Air stopped recognizing iPhones as cameras

I bought a Macbook Air (running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4) in mid-June and took it to Europe with me. All was working fine, and I was regularly plugging in my iPhone 5s (as well as my wife's 5s and my daughter's 4) to pull photos into iPhoto. No, we don't use PhotoStream/Cloud, for various reasons.
At some point a few weeks ago, I plugged in my iPhone to upload a new batch of photos, and... well, nothing happened. IPhoto didn't pop up with new images, or any indication that there was a camera roll attached.
I tried with my wife's 5s -- same problem. Nothing appeared.
I tried with my daughter's 4, same problem. Found a couple other people and tried *their* phones. Nothing.
I tried swapping out the cords -- nothing.
I looked online, and saw that using Image Capture was suggested by Apple as a next step -- so I fired that up, but once again, it doesn't see any iPhone as a camera. It just says "No camera or scanner connected."
Yes, the phones ARE recognized in iTunes. It can see it, access it, give all the info, etc. All good there. It just
So it's clear to me that it's NOT any of the iPhones, or the contents of their camera rolls, etc, because it doesn't work with *anyone's* iPhone.
And the fact that it once *did* not that long ago leads me to believe that some setting, somehow, somewhere, got switched. I just have no idea what that setting could be.
I'm a long-time PC user who finally made the jump to Mac and loving many aspects, but my knowledge base on how to get in and fix things is sorely lacking.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi there emg72,
The first troubleshooting steps I would suggest for this issue would be to reset your SMC on your MacBook Air:

  • PC not recognizing iphone as a digital camera

I am having the same issue with not being able to transfer my pics and video from my iphone onto my pc. I have read the many solutions posted in this forum but none have help me. I am able to sync to itunes but does not show up as a camera that is plugged into my pc. I have tried running the scanner/camera wizard but does not recognize my iphone as a camera.
Any solutions is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So the device appears in iTunes? This could be a serious issue with your OS or even your USB drivers or ports. Something that AppleCare may have limited support in regards as it could be isolated to a Microsoft referral if you're using a Windows machine.
    *Determine the following:*
Do you have any Webcam software installed? Such as Logitec Webcam software? If so, uninstall it then test.
    *Follow these steps for Windows:*
    Restart the machine, test.
Open Device Manager, see the device is appearing in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section.
    Update the USB drivers, test.
Try a new Windows user account (make it an admin account), test to see if it's User Specific or System-Wide, test.
Try another computer, see if it's appearing as a USB device, if it is, contact your vendor or manufacturer.

  • Vista not recognizing IPhone as camera....

Well, my IPhone and Vista worked fine a couple days ago but now, Windows doesn't recognize IPhone as a camera, so i can't get my pictures off it as easily.
    http://sleekupload.com/uploads/untitled_83.jpg
The link above is Vista trying to install drivers but failing. It was working fine before but it just...stopped.

First connect open iTunes and connect your iPhone to your computer then follow the steps below
    1. Hold down the Windows Key and press R.
    2. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK.
    3. Right-click Apple Mobile Device listed under Other Devices and then select Properties.
    4. Select Browse…
    5. Point it to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\drivers and click OK.
    6. Disconnect your iPhone close iTunes then reconnect your iPhone and try again
The install should finish and your iPhone should now be all good.
    If this does not work
Quit iTunes if it is open
From the Start menu select the Control panel
In Windows XP, choose Add or Remove Programs, then click Remove. Also remove any other items with the word “iTunes” in their names. Also remove any iPod-related entries.
    Restart your PC.
Delete the iTunes program itself, if it still exists after the steps you’ve already taken (by default it’s located in the “Program Files” folder)
    Again restart your PC.
Download the latest version of iTunes for Windows and install it.

  • IMovie '08 doesn't recognize camera

I have a Jazz HD178 video camera. I use it for air-to-ground video from my RC model airplanes. The Jazz file formats are JPEG/AVI(H264)/WAV/MP3. iMovie '08 does not recognize the camera.
1.Is there any way I can adjust settings so iMovie '08 will recognize the camera?
    2. What Apple format will give me an iMovie resolution of 1280x720 and a 16:9 aspect ratio?
I have downloaded a number of converters but only Apple TV seems to have the resolution but not the aspect ratio I'm looking for. Everything seems to be for iPod or iPhone.

  • Best practices for managing Movies (iPhoto, iMovie) to IPhone

I am looking for some basic recommendations best practices on managing the syncing of movies to my iPhone. Most of my movies either come from a digital camcorder into iMovie or from a digital Camera into iPhone.
    Issues:
    1. If I do an export or a share from iPhoto, iMovie, or QuickTime, what formats should I select. I've seem 3gp, mv4.
    2. When I add a movie to iTunes, where is it stored. I've seen some folder locations like iMovie Sharing/iTunes. Can I copy them directly there or should I always add to library in iTunes?
    3. If I want to get a DVD I own into a format for the iPhone, how might I do that?
Any other recommedations on best practices are welcome.
    Thanks
    mek

    1. If you type "iphone" or "ipod" into the help feature in imovie it will tell you how.
"If you want to download and view one of your iMovie projects to your iPod or iPhone, you first need to send it to iTunes. When you send your project to iTunes, iMovie allows you to create one or more movies of different sizes, depending on the size of the original media that’s in your project. The medium-sized movie is best for viewing on your iPod or iPhone."
    2. Mine appear under "movies" which is where imovie put them automatically.
    3. If you mean movies purchased on DVD, then copying them is illegal and cannot be discussed here.
From the terms of use of this forum:
    "Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store."

  • Cannot Import Video made with iMovie for iPhone/iPod Touch

I edited a video on my iPod touch using Apple's iMovie. The resulting .MOV file that iMovie creates will not import into iPhoto '11. While iMovie recognises the file just fine, iPhoto believes it is an unsupported file type. It's a .MOV for goodness sakes created with Apple's own hardware and program! Very strange. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Hey there. In answer to your question, all other clips that appear in my camera roll are easily seen by iPhoto. It is only those movies that I have created with iMovie for iPhone that iPhoto does not recognize. It's really strange, considering the fact that it's just a .MOV file. As a result, I've had to download a program called 'DiskAid' that allows me to transfer the .MOV file directly to my computer from the iPod Touch.
In answer to your question regarding whether or not iMovie for iPhone was worth downloading, I would have to say yes (assuming of course the import-to-iPhoto problem gets fixed). It's not a perfect program. My biggest complaint is that you have to import clips ONE at a time. There's no 'import all' option. This is really time consuming as you have to cycle through all the videos on your iPod or iPhone and manually tap each one and repeat. My dad likes to take a lot of 1-minute videos that then have to get spliced together and that can be really tedious with how this iMovie is currently set up. However, if you regularly think to add your clips to an existing project as you go along, things should be fine. It could do with a few more features and faster rendering times, but on the whole, it's a decent program. I have a feeling, though, that it was designed more for the YouTube generation who want to upload a five-minute video instead of people like my father and I who like to edit an hour or so and then eventually burn to a DVD. iMovie for the Mac still CERTAINLY has it's place.
