IMovie Rentals

Ok. So as far as I understand it, here are the steps for using the new iTunes movie rental feature:
1) Upgrade to the lastest (and greatest) iTunes.
2) Download a movie.
3) Try to play the movie. When your computer hangs, run Task Manager and attempt to shut down iTUnes for, say, 10 minutes.
4) When that fails, press the on/off button for ~10 seconds.
5) Power the machine back on.
6) Browse to the 'my music' folder and find the downloaded rental movie file.
7) Right click (I can do that) and select 'play'
8) The movie will start playing
9) When you click on 'full screen' make jokes about how the movie must start in a coal mine and eventually wind up pressing the on/off button again.
10) Repeat steps 6 - 8 except that this time the movie won't even start. Luckily for me, it does tell me I have 23 hours left to watch the movie which for me is good. It will probably take at least that long to get it to play.
Am I doing it right?
Great service - who wants to buy some Apple stock?

iDVD does work with Yosemite although, as Kappy pointed out unsupported for 2 years, so try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents of IDVD'S cache folder: User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks or Yosemite go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
If iDVD crashes again post the first 50 lines of the crash report.  Don't post a screenshot but copy and paste the actual text.
To get a movie from iMovie to iDVD it should be exported out of iMovie as 480p and added manually to iDVD.

  • All my videos are automatically being saved in iMovie but not in Videos.

I had a real fiasco with a movie rental on my iPad, and ever since it automatically deleted the rental, my iPad wont save any of the video I take in the Videos app.  All video automatically goes to iMovie now.  Do I need to mention how annoying this is?  There's no setting to change where videos automatically go to apparently.  This is a bug in the system..

DOH!  Thanks Johnathan, this is my first iPad, though I can't even recall how many Apple computers I've had.  I've never used an Apple product for taking photos and video before.  I always used a camera before, but I'm planning on getting a new Canon DSLR to pair up with the iPad.
OK, so now how can I set it so my videos don't automatically load into iMovie, or is that just not possible?

  • Do Movie Rentals appear to other devices in the 'Purchased Tab'

I recently bought Resident Evil Retribution as a HD Movie rental on my Windows PC in iTunes, I wanted to however download and watch on my iPad2
    or other iOS Device
Strangely the movie does not appear in any purchased tabs on my:
    iPhone4
    Windows Laptop iTunes
    iPad2
Do Rentals count as a Purchase and can I watch rentals on another iOS device?

Hi crystallynn04 - welcome to the forum!
I think you would be best to convert your movie to a Full Quality QuickTime file, that should then play on other machines, so long as they have QT installed, presumably then also being importable to iMovie 08 if needs be.

  • Mac mini on photoshop and imovie

Hi, I am looking to switch over to Mac for non-professional photo editing and video editing. I have been looking at the mac mini basic model and upgrading the ram to 16gb. Is this a good option or is it worth waiting and saving up for the basic Imac. How does photoshop and imovie run on the mac mini?

You would definitely need 16GB of RAM and you can save some money buying the additional RAM from Other World Computing or Crucial. Photoshop is very RAM hungry, but perhaps even more hungry for CPU resources. If you are going to be doing a lot of Photoshopping I would go for a top of the line mini with the 2.6GHz quad core i7 processor and a Fusion drive. The fusion drive will yield disk I/O performance close to that of a full solid state drive (SSD) and that can be helpful with Photoshop as well. I have done some iMovie work on my fully loaded mini and I have been very pleased with the rendering speed and that is what seems to take the longest time.
If you already have a good monitor, that you like the fully tricked out mini would be a good buy for you. If you are going to buy an Apple monitor in addition to the mini, the price defference between that and a high end iMac will only be few hundred dollars and the iMac will be faster. I switched from iMacs to the mini because I bought a new iMac I always had to buy both the monitor and the processor. WIth the mini I only have to replace/upgrade one or the other.
Given you can no longer purchase Adobe products, they are available as rental only tools, you might want to consider some of the less expensive non-Adobe alternatives that are available on the Mac. You may find one of those that will give you the results you want and you can purchase for a fraction of what a year's rent of Photoshop will cost you some are even free. On the other hand Photoshop is still the standard by which all others are compared.

  • What is the best digital format from VHS to iMove?

Hello - I am getting some VHS tapes converted to digital files to edit on iMovie 11. They will be edited on a Macbook Pro 13" and it would be convenient if they could also work in FCE later on. My plan was to ask the company doing the conversion to put the files/movies on a portable hard drive, rather than DVD. And then import them or edit on iMovie. But is mpeg 4 the best end format or something else?
    Thanks.
    Simon

    $500 -- ouch!!
Along with the new deck, I bought another brand new Sony Handycam MiniDV camcorder, because our Canon broke this summer too as well which served us very well for 10 years. It started eating tape, but we feed it new tapes every time we record; probably why it lasted so long?!? This camcorder set me back around $200. Yes, they are hard to find, but I work in the digital photo/video business, so sometimes dealers may have new old stock where you can bargain down. I was extremely lucky to had bought a new old stock from a dealer that had it but couldn't sell it. Perfect.
You're right -- tape to tape transfers is not ideal as degradation in S/N will impede on image quality. But I'm assuming the OP is simply using consumer grade VHS camcorders, so the analog to DV transfer is ok if done once. Then DV tape through Firewire is an analog to digital transfer. Once the OP has the digital copy inside the computer, it will never degrade if you make multiple copies on the hard drive.
Another solution the OP can look into is that some shops (getting rare these days) may have a Canon GL-2 on their rental pool and the OP can just use its built-in Analog to Digital (Firewire) pass through to transfer VHS analog footage directly into iMovie or FCE!
Wow, it's good to hear another person here still using DV!

  • Sound dissapearing in iMovie '08

I've used iMovie '08 successfully for over a year. I opened it yesterday, and it worked fine. Sound played when I skimmed over videos in my iphoto library, and also when I played them. All of the sudden, the sound stopped working. I checked to make sure mute wasn't on, etc. Files in my project window still sounded fine. I tried removing the iphoto Data folder, then forcing iPhoto to rebuild all thumbnails. Then when I opened iMovie, it also rebuilt all video thumbnails (which took 8 hours). But, the problem persists. In the iphoto Data folder, where the video thumbnails are located, they videos play fine. Does anyone have a solution for this?

.. but the fact that Apple wants iMovie 08 users to go and learn how to use a second app (Garageband), just to edit some audio, when it was so easily done with iMovieHD, seems very counter-productive to me and is one of many reasons why I can never see myself investing in new iLife software, until such time as Apple brings out a real iMovie HD update, which I am not holding my breath for either. ..
we shall not comment on Apple's strategy (ToU), but as an Apple 'fanboy' and iM user since vers2 I'd like to comment on that...:
'til vers6, iM was a 'rest of us' NLE .. in its complexity, in its options, in its handling of sources (restricted to 'real' videocams) and delivery ...
now, we see AppleTV, HiDef rentals in iTS - and HiDefcamcorders, 50" Plasmas .. and that YT phenomenon .. shakey, unsharp, snippets of moving pixels..
the reaction of Apple is: a very simple, basic, 'raw' uploader-tool.. (imagine iM08 on an iPhone...) and FCE4, offering allmost all features of Hollywood's dream machine FinalCut for just 299 ..
I'm used to iMHD2,3,4,5,6 too.. but I made the switch to FCE .. iM08 is a toy .. I use it only to participate here and due to integration into other iLife apps, mostly iWeb.. we have a wrong perspective here on this board: nobody edits his/her homevideos! Explain me the reason of existence of DVDcorders.. how silly is that! a video-polaroid! and now this Flip-thingie.. !!
editing, real editing, with 'ducking' audio, adding music, titles, themes ( ! ) , drama, segments, story telling.. this is very, very few of consumers.. that is a pro-sumer (I LOVE marketing lingo) feature..
we shall not speculate, but I mostly doubt we see 'editors' features in iM08.. I expect CoreAnim stuff, +heyhey look mom, funny face+ -type of effects, as allready realized in iChat/Photobooth..
... and I upgrade my vers. 3.5 of FCE, when skimming is integrated as an 'views options' into some forthcoming version of FCE ..

  • Overlap Transition smooth on iMovie, but choppy on finished DVD disc

I've been using the overlap transition because of I find it very smooth and suttle. However, in the last film I made, the final product (after iDVD) produced choppy overlap transitions. I made several copies, and in each case, the same thing happened.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Ok, thank you Dave- that answers that about converting to PAL.
And lucky-YOU to live on the south coast of Dorset - I've seen beautiful photos of that part of England. Our family is in Dieppe and for years we've been meaning to take the boat across to New Haven. There's also a wonderful Saturday market in Dieppe that's very popular with the British tourists. I know it's not terribly close for you, but maybe you've been?
Good to know that car rentals are so reasonable in your area. We must do that next summer. Thanks!!
Back to the original topic of the flickering during the overlap transition, I re-burned another DVD. This time I changed to Best Quality and made sure the project info was set at 4gb instead of 8gb (each project is automatically pre-set for an 8gb disc and I have to manually change it - rather a pain, I find).
I again saved it as a disc image because I find this the best way to go back and make quick copies as I need them.
The flickering was still there in the same places.
It could be happening during the disc image saving process since it doesn't flicker during playback in iMovie or iDVD. I also noticed that it happens more when the length of the transition is quite short.
Anyway, I do appreciate everyone's input and time! It's just one of those THINGS!!
    Thank you,
    Lisette

  • No subtitles on a foreign movie rental

No subtitles appear when playing a foreign movie rental from iTunes even though the description states there is.

Hi Clemy31! I'd like to know, too! I have a TON of subtitles for a very short movie, 2 minutes long, but I don't know how to add them to imovies. I don't even know the way you are doing it. I hope someone knows the answer. Thanks!

  • Unable to capture video off of Hitachi DVD+HDD combined hybrid to iMovie

I have video captured on a hard drive in my Hitachi consumer grade camera. I am trying to capture that media into iMovie. iMovie is not recognizing the files on the camera and I am unable to select the media to transfer. I am connecting to my Macbook using a 6pin to USB cord. The camera ONLY has a 6 pin and A/V outlet. I have been unsuccessful capturing any media. If anyone has any insight, please let me know. I am using iMovie 6.0.3
I have heard that I should use firewire, however I can not find a 6 pin to firwire cord. If you know a way to work around having a firewire cord or where I can fine the necessary wire, I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

iMovie HD 6 won't accept mpg-2 compressed files
With luck, you might be able to use them in iMovie '08 (but your camera isn't on the supported list).

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

  • Movie rentals that I downloaded onto iMac with Lion to do not show up on ATV 2 in menu for computers.  Purchased movies show up just fine.  What to do or look for?

I have an imac that is running lion and an Apple TV generation 2.  I have rented a movie from itunes and it shows up on my imac in Itunes under a rental icon, and will play fine on my computer.  However, it does not show up as choice to play on my apple tv.  I have homesharing enabled and everything else works fine including purchased movies that are on my imac, but no where does it show rental movies.
What do I look for?  What do I do to play the rental movie on my apple tv 2?

    Answer to my own question:
Wait until the downloaded rental has completed its download to the imac.  This took a long time for me, since it was part of several things that I was downloading at the same time.
Finally, it showed up on my apple tv.   Interestingly, I was able to watch much of the movie on my iMac before the movie finished its download and was available to the ATV 2.

  • IMovie 6 HD Expanded Text Options Plugin

I would like to have more flexibility in the use of text in titles in iMovie 6 HD.  I'm looking for a plugin that will allow for more user control of text including multiple fonts, multiple sizes, etc in a single title.  Is there such a plugin available that would allow more "word-type" text manipulation possibilities?

Check out this plug-in from cf/x:
    http://www.imovieplugins.com/titlehome.html
Click on 'Simple Caption' in the l/h column. Note that it seems to only work with Postscript fonts.
You can test it for free, or buy it for only $6!
I use several of their plug-ins, they work great, but I haven't tried this one (no, I am not related to them!)

  • IMovie Text Options

I am working on a new macbook at work, and am starting my first movie (iMovie 11, I guess).  I have inserted a Title slide into my movie, and when I go to adjust the text, it won't let me into any font (or other) options.  It'll show me what font it defaulted to, but it is grayed out so I can't change it.  Do  I have to import some fonts or something?

If its a new MacBook you are almost certainly using iMovie 10 on Mavericks.   Some title styles don't allow to change fonts.  Others do.  The latest update (10.0.3) has made more title fonts editable so its worth updating if you are using an ealrier version.  Otherwise its just a matter of trying some different title styles.
