Imovie shimmer

I recently purchased a 15" macbook pro with retina display. When I import a video clip from my Sony HDR-HC9 camcorder into imovie 11, the picture shimmers. I viewed the clip directly on a TV monitor and the quality was fine. Also I did not have this problem when using this camcorder on my previous 17" macbook pro. I am connecting the camcorder to the computor using the camcorder's firewire 400 cable together with a 400 to 800 converter plus a 800 to thunderbolt converter.
Editing videos is my primary application. Can anyone help.

I tried it with and without image stabilization. Same result.
However. I downloaded a trial version of final cut pro and do not seem to be experiencing any problems. Will see with further usage.

How can I get rid of shimmer effect in videos that I create from photos in iMovie?

Well, not sure - so exactly what resolution do you use to shoot? Go in your camera settings and check. And, is there a settings to choose for regular/extra/fine/superfine quality? I shoot at the highest quality - period. My size/resolution is either widescreen or larger than what I need for the movie. My TV is HD 720p - that means the screen will display 1200 x 720 pixels in HD; if you have a 1080p, it'd be 1920 x 1080. So shoot in a size a bit larger than that because they can be adjusted down without any quality loss, but can't be made larger without significant loss of quality.
But,again, the problem usually doesn't start until you add movement, but camera quality has something to do with it as well. I know that a previous camera I had was not as good and a lot of my slideshows/movies didn't come out as perfect as I would have liked. So I bought a more expensive camera - shoots in full 1080 HD and I haven't had a problem since.
As for exporting a slideshow: finish it in Photo to Movie and export to desktop at highest quality (will take a while). Here is a screenshot of my export settings:
Once done, you can simply choose that movie by going to "import movies" in iMovie and navigating to the location (I usually save to desktop - easy to find).

  • I get a "shimmer" on some photos after applying & rendering Ken Burns

In a slideshow I'm attempting to make in iMovie, I'm getting a "shimmering" effect after applying the Ken Burns effect to photos I've imported from iPhoto. The shimmer appears most noticeable in shots of scenary, where there is a lot of detail like tree leaves or grass. (In addition, as many others also have noted and complained about, the resolution, and even the color, in iMovie is really a disappointment. This is especially distressing because the original digital photos I took are incredibly crisp and clear, with beautiful color, and the slideshows I made in iPhoto and played on my iMac are gorgeous!). The Ken Burns' "shimmer" & poor resolution in iMovie and burning slideshows onto a DVD seem hardly worth all the time & effort. This is a real shortcoming in the Apple software it seems to me. Apple needs to fix it in future updates to the Tiger operating system or in the forthcoming Leopard.

    MagneticMike,
what you see is usually referred to as a 'Moire' pattern that is caused by high-contrast in your source material. This means that exactly the 'incredibly crisp and clear' advantage of your photo is ruining your clip. In photographs, moire problems are usually overcome by slightly softening (e.g gauss blurring) the offending areas before the final render pass. This you can apply to your source image as well, and then import it into iMovie.
Interestingly, a different approach is possible with moving media. Since moire patterns are artificial noise introduced into your clip, people have found that our 'noise filter (combine)' plug-in can get rid of this. Perhaps you can download the plug-in and try if it helps with your problem.
(please try this link: http://imovieplugins.com/plugs/noisefiltercombi.html )
    Hope this helps

  • DVD Quality Much Poorer Than iMovie Project Play-Back

Hi folks - I have run up against a problem that I haven't had before. Normally, playing iMovies is inferior to the finished product. But this time the finished DVD displays much more shimmering (especially of KB zooms).
Scrolled text sourced from Rolling Credits (which normally results in excellent quality) also displays this shimmering effect, and some of the stills are slighly artifacted.
A full-quality QT movie I made for test purposes is similarly flawed.
Because the stills originated from scanned slides, (though imported via KB), I would not expect absolute perfection, but as said above, the playback quality in iMovie is very acceptable with stable zooming and no shimmer effect. Most of the scrolled text was black on a nearly white background.
[Using iMovie 5.0.2, and iDVD 5 set to Best Quality. Dragged the iMovie package into iDVD.]
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Hi Catspaw
I'm glad You addreesed this question. I to asked it about half a Year ago and
then was informed that the qualty was the same but as You see it isn't.
I made a long movie of RedBull FlugTag in Gothenburg Sweden and on the
same DVD i droped a short version from same original material.
Diff. Full movie was a drop of the QT ref movie in the project.
Short version was an export as full quality QT which I dropped into same
theme in iDVD. The short version was significantly more jaggied.
Let's hope for an explanation and if there is any settings in QT full qual that
has to be set to give same quality.

  • IMovies problem with Ken Burns effect.

When I use Ken Burns effect in IMovies, the bricks of a house, the line of a shirt, ... are kind of vibrating. In Aperture 3, it is ok. Is that a known problem with IMovies ?
    Lombarr1.

I have seen that in older editions - like iMovie 6 - especially when using pics at a high resolution - the water or sky seemd to shimmer. Funny I'm using iMovie 11 now and some things I liked better in 6, but you bring to mind something that bugged me (though people would ask - "How did you get that to happen?")

  • Shimmering once iMovie burned using iDVD

Hi - I have created a presentation (both scanned photos and video clips) in iMovie 6 and burned it using iDVD. The presentation looks great on iMovie, but after I've burned it and watched it on my DVD, there seems to be a "shimmering" effect on some of the photos. Originally I thought it was something to do with the way I scanned the photos. But when I attempted burning it subsequent times, a different set of photos seemed to have developed the shimmering effect. For example, on the first DVD, clips #50-75 had shimmering and in the second DVD, it was clips #60-78 (the shimmering seems to be moving along later in the presentation). Any suggestions on what I have to do to avoid this? Many thanks....

Hi - thanks for the suggested reading. I'm prepared to save the clips at a smaller resolution (640x480) but I'm still confused - why does the "shimmering" effect strike different clips at different times when I burn it on iDVD? If an image would be prone to "shimmering" then shouldn't the effect show up each time the project is burned? Conversely, if it burned properly once before, why would it begin to "shimmer" when the project is burned a second time?

  • IMovie slideshow -distortion problem

I created a photo slideshow in iMovie. When I exported it to iDvd, there was a slight shimmer/distortion issue. However, when I burned the DVD, the final product was completely unusable. Horrible distortion & shimmer ...
Has anyone had this issue and found a solution using iMovie? (I have also created the project in iPhoto, but have found another set of issues doing that... I would prefer to fix this issue and use the iMovie version.

I have this problem also. When I import my pictures from iPhoto and use the Ken Burns effect I get serious waves or shimmy effects on the areas of the picture that have horizontal lines during pan and zoom. If I don't use the Ken Burns effect and just have the picture still there is no "shimmer". I would dearly love to know how to eradicate this effect but still use the Ken Burns pan and zoom. I am going to try the classic effect and see if that helps but that will mean the movie won't fill the picture on my wide screen TV. Anyone know what is going on?! Suggestions?!

  • Ken Burns effect makes photos shimmer when playing, Why?

When viewing a slideshow type project using the Ken Burns effect in iMovie, the photos sort of shimmer, which can distort the picture. Is this normal? Is there something that I am not doing, or something I can do to fix this problem?
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   17"

Hi Tifany, there are MANY threads about this if you want to search for them.
First thing I will ask though is: are you using iMovie to create a STILL photo slideshow? If so, you will be disappointed with the quality. There are some photos that just seem to attract this shimmering effect, and others that dont. perhaps turn the KB OFF on the ones that do, and see if that makes a difference?
I personally have found that FotoMagico or iPhoto create better quality slideshows than iMovie (which is, afterall, a video editing tool).

  • Vertically descending shimmer aberration on capture problem

I am new to Final Cut with experienace at the bottom rung of the ladder, and am fiddling with things at the moment slowly learning it. When I firewire import from my Sony FX1 HiDef videocam footage using the Apple intermediate codec 1080i60, I get this horizontal band that shimmers the image behind it. it is vertically not verty tall, just a narrow band that runs horizontal, and it starts at the top of the frame, descends to the bottom in about 5 seconds, disappears, then reappears after a few seconds at the top again.
I had set my scratch disk as the original disc that came with my PowerPC 2.2 G5 running OSX 10.4.7.
I added a 500G new SATA 7200rpm 16K buffer hard drive, and set that as my scratch drive.....neither has removed the shimmer.
Other parameters are 1.5GB memory, 512 kb memory per each CPU.
When I imported the footage from my FX1 videocam into iMovieHD, there is no disruptive shimmer. Now I haven't gotten anywhere near the point of downloaidng it to a DVD and play it on a standard Def DVD player on a hidef TV, (FC is steep enough) so i don't know if it will disappear, but I hate to work on a project as a newbie and spend all the time on a project that would be visdually useless.
    Thoughts?
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Much as it sounds like a power hum bar, I can't imagine a scenario that would cause it under FCP, but not under iMovie, so lets focus on the differences between the two.
There are 2 I can think of. One: iMovie captures to AIC codec as opposed to the native HDV that FCP gives you. Have you tried capturing in FCP to the AIC codec to see if you still get the bar?
Two: FCP uses Quicktime to capture. iMovie does not. You might try reinstalling QuickTime (don't skip any steps). Go to /Library/Receipts. Trash all QuickTime related .pkg files (Don't worry, you're only deleting receipts so that a full install will take place). Go to http://www.quicktime.com/ and download the latest installer and run it. Reboot.

  • Any iMovie gurus -- stupid nubie question

I'll admit it, I'm a total iMovie newbie, My daughter has more experience with the app than I have. However, I've been asked by said daughter's lacrosse coach to tape the games for later analysis. Since lacrosse is a club sport (not an academic sport) we don't have access to the high school's video equipment, though I can use the press box at the field. With our personal camcorder, the field of view is slightly over half the field. Another parent has volunteered to let me use thier identical camera.
Is it possible with iMovie HD to combine two video feeds in a split frame (correct term???) to provide full field coverage. I realize that I'll have to crop both video feeds to prevent overlap in the middle.
Has anybody had any experience with this type of editing.
I kinda wish, they had asked me to setup a mail/dns/web server for the team. That I can handle.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
I think a better solution would be to shoot with a tripod and cover the whole field panning left to right (or if you prefer right to left)
Shooting with two cameras can only be a plus (both cams on tripods, one with a wide view and the other with a tighter view of the action,) Knowing when to cut between camera footage and when to show split screen or picture in picture is also a plus.
Here Dan provides tips for shooting with 2 or more cameras

Just to add to Split Screen methods using iMovie
Slick plugin vol. 4 Hollywood Editions by GeeThree.com has a split screen plugin that does a superb job. It cost $50 but you get 3 additional great plugins effects( picture in picture, vidmix, Matte-tastic,) Plus a Stand alone application "Slick Motion". IMHO this Slick Motion is a very good application for animating photos/still images. No flicker/shimmer/jagged edges you often get in "iMovies Ken Burns effect". The only drawbacks are limited features and you can only import one photo at a time but, the quality is very good. If I didn't already own Photo to Movie or Still Life I think I would use this app before iMovies Ken Burns.
Anyway back to Slick's "Split Screen" plugin easy to use, a real "no-brainer (no manual needed) with adjustment sliders to position either video sources to the right or left (if necessary). Here's the link, if you're interested.

I've created a simple one slide presentation with music in the background for about 25 seconds, and 2 shimmer builds. It is meant to be a simple holiday greeting. • Unable to capture video off of Hitachi DVD+HDD combined hybrid to iMovie

I have video captured on a hard drive in my Hitachi consumer grade camera. I am trying to capture that media into iMovie. iMovie is not recognizing the files on the camera and I am unable to select the media to transfer. I am connecting to my Macbook using a 6pin to USB cord. The camera ONLY has a 6 pin and A/V outlet. I have been unsuccessful capturing any media. If anyone has any insight, please let me know. I am using iMovie 6.0.3
I have heard that I should use firewire, however I can not find a 6 pin to firwire cord. If you know a way to work around having a firewire cord or where I can fine the necessary wire, I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

iMovie HD 6 won't accept mpg-2 compressed files
With luck, you might be able to use them in iMovie '08 (but your camera isn't on the supported list).

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

  • IMovie 6 HD Expanded Text Options Plugin

I would like to have more flexibility in the use of text in titles in iMovie 6 HD.  I'm looking for a plugin that will allow for more user control of text including multiple fonts, multiple sizes, etc in a single title.  Is there such a plugin available that would allow more "word-type" text manipulation possibilities?

Check out this plug-in from cf/x:
    http://www.imovieplugins.com/titlehome.html
Click on 'Simple Caption' in the l/h column. Note that it seems to only work with Postscript fonts.
You can test it for free, or buy it for only $6!
I use several of their plug-ins, they work great, but I haven't tried this one (no, I am not related to them!)

  • IMovie Text Options

I am working on a new macbook at work, and am starting my first movie (iMovie 11, I guess).  I have inserted a Title slide into my movie, and when I go to adjust the text, it won't let me into any font (or other) options.  It'll show me what font it defaulted to, but it is grayed out so I can't change it.  Do  I have to import some fonts or something?

If its a new MacBook you are almost certainly using iMovie 10 on Mavericks.   Some title styles don't allow to change fonts.  Others do.  The latest update (10.0.3) has made more title fonts editable so its worth updating if you are using an ealrier version.  Otherwise its just a matter of trying some different title styles.
