IMovie Skipping After Video Import?

I am using iMovie 8.0.5 and a Black MacBook. I have a MiniDV Panasonic camcorder that I bought a couple of years ago. It takes good video, but when I try importing it into iMovie, the imported video skips every so often. I am using a FireWire 400 cable between my computer and camcorder. I have quit all of the other programs when I am importing.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Dave

I found a work-around for this problem. I tried importing to my MacBook Pro's internal drive instead of the external drive I'm using to store my video footage. From there, iMovie '09 lets me copy the imported footage to the external drive. It's not the solution I prefer, but it works for now.
Has anybody else even had this problem? I've seen very few reports of this problem and even fewer suggestions for possible solutions. BTW I'm running Snow Leopard's 64 bit kernal. Could that be a factor here?

  • IMovie skips on video but sound is perfect.  Very frustrating

I am building a project in iMovie. I import the video from my Sony HDV-SR11. I start cutting clips and putting them in the project. As I check the video to watch the movie I'm building, I notice that the video will "skip" but the audio continues perfectly. I can push the space bar to stop it, restart it and the video will play correctly where it previously was having problems, then it will start skipping somewhere else. It's obviously not a problem with the import as it's "in there" correct but doens't seem to play back properly every time. I've tried Analyzing for Stabilazion and things like that but nothing seems to work. I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz, 1.5GB Memory DDR2 SDRAM running Mac OS X. I'm not a computer guy so don't know what all that even means. I've got all my movies on a 1tb hard drive to keep from overloading my computer. I've shut down everything so just iMovie is running. It feel slike iMovie is chugging and not fast enough to keep up? Any help/thoughts are appreciated. I've seen a handful of similar posts and nobody ever gets the question answered. I'm not using any "pro" level functions on iMovie...just a normal Joe here trying to make a movie for my family. HELP! Thanks.

I'm spending lots of time and lots of money trying to research this problem. I've read tons of posts and nobody seems to adequately answer the problem. lots of theories but no "this is it." I will keep you updated if I can. I had a "mac pro" come to the house today. Tomorrow they are giving me 4MB of RAM and say that shoudl increase it. The theory is that this version of iMac was before HD cameras were big and now that everyone seems to be using them, the computer is not equipped to handle it so it's slow to process it. They think the RAM will make it better but he said probably still not somethign I'll be thrilled with. Truthfully, as long as it works and the files are stored (for safe keeping) properly and I can burn discs for peopel to see I'm okay with it. Seems like everything else...we've just got to keep up with technology. If anyone has any insights to add, please do. I promise to let you all know what I find as I go through this process.

  • IMovie 11 DV video import quality

I have a lot of VHS and mini DV tapes I want to convert to digital to preserve them. I have been frustrated with PC issues for the past 15 years and I just made the switch from PC to Mac. All I have ever heard about is the quality of video editing capabilities of a Mac! So I bought a new Mac mini and was planning to get the Elgato video capture cable for the VHS tapes, but thought I would try the DV tapes first. I Hooked the firewire up to my JVC mini DV camera and was anticipating a great import into IMovie only to be sooo disappointed by the grainy dingy results. The transfer quality is better in my dinosaur HP using Arcsoft Showbiz! From what I have been reading this may be a problem with the new IMovie version. Mine is a new Mac Mini so I believe it is IMovie 11. I was hoping someone could tell me how to change some settings but I think I may have made a mistake switching to a Mac! Can anyone help me here???
Signed, very disappointed and frustrated New Mac User

but I think I may have made a mistake switching to a Mac!
    You did not.
and was planning to get the Elgato video capture cable for the VHS tapes
A USB device (like Elgato) can't "keep up" with a video stream, unless it uses single-field processing. This means every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
I have done LOTS of this. Here is how to do it.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Grassvally ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09 and 11).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 is a "lossless" combination. My movies are diamond sharp, with the same quality you get from Hollywood.
You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.

  • After I import a movie file from the camera memory card, Imovie 10.0.1 acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it worksnow?  Thank you, Filippo

On IMac 10.9  After I import a movie file from the camera memory card to Imovie 10.0.1 it acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it works now?  Anyone know?  Thanks, Filippo

I would like to know this too. I imported a lot of files, then Imovie crashed. I went back in and they are not in imovie at all.
I reconnected the camcorder to import again and though they are still on the camcorder, I no longer see them in the available list of files to import. I'm sure there is some sort of simple setting somewhere that reveals all files even if it thinks they are imported.
    Thanks

    Hello bbryson68,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand you're wanting to move iMovie project and event data to another drive.  I found the following information in the iMovie help that answers your question.
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library. The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip:  To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Work with multiple libraries

  • Songs skip after importing them

I recently purchased an iMac. I used to have a PC but decided to change to a mac. As such I moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive. I have then connected this to my new iMac and loaded the songs into iTunes. Unfortunately some of the songs skip after seconds and go to the next track. I have tried playing the track in QuickTime and the song sounds distorted at the point it would skip in iTunes then starts playing again as normal. If there is a fix I would be very grateful to find out what it is as I fear that a lot of my library is now corrupt somehow. Also if there is an easy way to find which songs are corrupt without playing them all would be good.

We are experiencing the same problem. The CD you are importing is it a "live" CD or a "studio" recording CD. Ours is a live concert CD

  • How do I get iMovies to see my imported videos?

Using iPad2, I purchased the iMovie app, and when I take my home movies in .mov form and import them from iTunes to the iPad, iMovies does not see any videos. Surely this app will work with existing home videos and not just videos shot wight the iPad. If the was the case I never would have bought the app in the first place, I wanted to be able to edit my family vacation videos shot with a local hd cam directly on my iPad.
Anyone know if I am doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

I figured out several things in a past 24 hrs.
iOS iMovie will see videos only from iOS camera roll.
so if camera roll app cannot read the video iMovie will that fail at that to.
Videos from iPhone 4, and 3GS are not the problem.
I am trying to get videos from my other video camera.
Interesting observation: if you copy video from Mac iMovie events (.mov file) into a iOS camera roll it will not be recognized, but when you connect iPad to your computer and open Mac iMovie and you select iPad as camera source you will be able to see that video as beeing available for export.
All these .mov files are encoded differently so unless your video encoded exactly the same way as videos from iPhone 4 or 3GS it would not show in iOS camera roll.
Anybody has other ideas on encoding and file formats for iOS iMovie.
right now iOS iMovie is useless to me since it does not support my workflow, do not even want spend time learning it.
    Please prove me wrong.

  • Fastest iMovie Video Import Fromat for iDVD Processing

Which iMovie video import format will end up being converted the fastest when I export the final result into iDVD?
Should I use DV? MPG4? Or one of the others?
Just what format DOES iDVD convert iMovies into? Seems to take a REALLY long time, even with my iMac G5. If I could initially import the raw video into the same format, seems logical it would take less time for iDVD to do its thing.
    Thanks!
    iMac G5, Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

DV is the native format for iMovie and iDVD. Encoding contents to mpeg2 is a looong process in iDVD.
Of course authoring a DVD in an app like DVD Studio Pro with mpeg2 files would be a time saver, however unlike DVD SP, iDVD does not except mpeg2 files. (it only encodes to mpeg2).
I usually bring my iMovie project into iDVD as a flatten project.
Meaning all the A/V tracks, transitions, effects, titles, etc. comprising a iMovie project is shared/exported as a DV file(s) into a new project.
I check to make sure the DV file(s) play correctly in the new project and just add chapter markers save and close iMovie. Open iDVD, import the iMovie project, author the DVD and wait for it to finish.
I find iDVD works more efficiently/faster encoding when it doesn't have to deal with mulitple audio tracks, transitons, effects, titles etc.
It also reduces the number of encoding errors that can occur in iDVD.

  • IMovie 9 won't import JVC 150 ProHD video

I shot some video with a JVC-150 ProHD video camera. The video imports fine into Final Cut Pro, but will not import into iMovie 9.
The original video was saved as a QT file with MPEG-2 video codec, which imported fine into FCP. When it did not open in iMovie, I converted the file into a mp4 format with H.264/AAC codec. Again, video imports fine into FCP, but still would not open in iMovie 9. Interesting thing is video imports in iMovieHD without a problem.
Can anyone tell me what the problem may be? Does iMovie 9 not accept the mpeg2 format (original or converted)? Do I need to change the JVC video capture settings? Any help would be appreciated?

What do you mean by getting them on my internal drive? They are on my desktop, I assume that is what you meant?
your desktop is physical located... ? yepp, on your internal harddrive (mostly) ...
harddrive-corder use a very different codec and filestructure then a tape... any kind of file and structure has its abriviations... .mods contain the pics, .mois contain some meta-data, needed to locate the pic-data on media...
    don't hesitate to use wiki
you try to use an app outside its specs... so, try to get 3rd party apps helping you, or dive down into the realms of codecs, stutctures, compressors, ..... I'm no technician, I just read a lot, tried a lot, had once in while the problem to import DVDs... or some obscure iNet downloads....
but, I prefer to use apps within concept - so, I do use a miniDV camcorder…

  • Can't import into iMovie even after converting files with Mpeg streamclip

    Hi,
I have been trying to create iMovie proejcts with .mpeg, .mpg, .mpa. IMovie could not import the files (it tells me it's an uknown error). Then, using mpeg streamclip and exporting the files to quicktime, DV and Avi (tried all the formats that I knew iMovie would support) iMovie still wouldn't import the files.
What am I doing wrong? I have the latest version of iMovie.
    Please Help!
    Thank you!!!

Have you done the conversion like this:
To convert a DVD or MPEG to DV with MPEG Streamclip (v1.8 or later): Open a desired .VOB on a DVD (DVD/VIDEOTS/VTS_011.VOB, for example) or a MPEG file.
Select the In/Out points if you want to extract just a portion of the video.
Choose "File/Export to DV.../Compression: DV (DV25)". Choose the same video format (PAL/NTSC) as the iMovie project is.
Choose "Split DV stream in Segments" if the content is more than 9 minutes 27 seconds because iMovie 1-4 can't reliably handle longer clip files and it might be a good idea to limit the converted .dv file's size anyway (segmented clips play seamlessly in iMovie).
...and is there enough room on the HD where the iMovie project is? 60 minutes of .dv is 13 GB and iMovie duplicates an imported .dv file so you need 26 GB/hour (unless you use the secret shortcut that prevents the duplication .

    Hi SyahirahS,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
If the video was synced from iTunes when you connected your iPhone to the PC, you would have to remove it the same way.

  • AVCHD video imports but playback skips  and is jerky

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help with this problem:
I successfully imported AVCHD clips from my Sony Handycam but when I play back the clips they are very jerky. Any ideas how I can get smooth playback?
    Thanks--Steve

It's likely to be because your system is struggling to deal with the AVCHD format, which is very processor intensive. This is from the system requirements for iMovie 09:
+AVCHD video requires a Mac with an Intel Core Duo processor or better. Visit iMovie ’09 Camcorder Support for details on digital video device and format support.+
iMovie 08 handles AVCHD; if you use something like Voltaic from Shedworx, you can convert to a format that iMovie 06 HD will handle.
Another option is to use MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert the AVCHD clips to something like the Apple Intermediate Codec before importing into iMovie, which should solve it
