IMovie Slide Show corrupted space?

My students are creating iMovie slide shows of their photographs. Some imported them from iPhoto and others imported their photos as clips.
Today, 3 students on 3 different computers had this problem: everything was going along fine, they looked at the slide show and it was fine, then they started the timeline again and one or more photos had vertical lines through the frame- like they were corrupted. We deleted the photo and went back to the original photo. Resaved it, imported it again into iPhoto and then to iMovie. Placed it and same thing. We moved it to another location on the timeline and it wasn't the frame but the spot in the timeline that seems to be the problem. When we placed a picture that was fine elsewhere in that space, it showed the vertical lines-like wide nasty tracking lines.

Once your project is complete, export it by choosing share/share to media browser, choose a size that is big enough but not too big, you don't say where you are from or whether you are working WS or 4:3, but it really wouldn't do any harm except waste a little fo your Hard Disk space to choose Large if you are in doubt.
Close imovie, open iDVD, (if you've not used iDVD take a little tutorial), decide what sort of project you want to make (some are just real easy, others allow you a bit of artistic license), click media, a window will open (the media browser) and you can simply drag the movie you just made to your iDVD project.

  • New to iMovie - Slide Show project

I've been lurking in the iMovie discussions for a couple of months now, and I'm trying to absorb the knowledge of the community. I'm also working my way through "The Missing Manual" which is invaluable. I have two projects in mind, so I'm starting two threads to ask for advice.
First is my "Slide Show" project. I have around two thousand jpeg pictures from my daughter's wedding, and I'd like to put together a DVD of the wedding. This sounds fairly straightforward to me, but I'd like your advice on my plan.
The project starts with an outline on paper of the structure of the project - starting with David Pogue's "22 Shots for Your Wedding Video" from the Missing Manual.
Question 1: I'm thinking of a 20 to 30 minute show, with each slide on screen for 3 to 4 seconds, and a simple cross dissolve between most pictures - maybe a Ken Burns Effect thrown in as a transition between sections, say between the church and the reception. Is this a reasonable length and plan?
Question 2: I'm thinking of using a series of approximately one-minute music clips for the sound. Many years ago, in a different forum, I read a comment that the sound track was more difficult than the video, so I was thinking of putting the music together first, and laying the pictures over it. I'm planning to use Amadeus II to build the audio track, with fades from song to song. Then maybe just import the 20 or 30-minute sound track into iMovie and fit the video by adjusting each picture's duration. Is this a reasonable plan? Would I be better off to feed iMovie smaller chunks at a time?
Question 3: With no disrespect to iPhoto, I've grown up using Graphic Converter and so I plan to use it to shuffle through the 2000 pictures, sort and select those I want to use, and then crop them to 720 x 528 (or 1.364:1) for use without the Ken Burns effect. I realize that part of the elegance of iMovie is it's integration with the i-Suite, but is there any other downside to this plan?
Question 4: I also understand that I do not want to let iMovie render my stills, but to let iDVD do it. To do this, I would just quit my project without letting iMovie render it, and then open it in iDVD, correct?
Sorry for the length of this post - I've been thinking a lot about this project, but it's time to start doing rather than just thinking!
    Thanks,
    Joe
    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6) iBook G3 (10.3.5); Beige G3 266 DT (9.2.2)

    Hi Joe
Q1: About 300 to 600 slides sounds OK when there is a line in the story and
some nice music also will make it easier to appreciate.
Q2: I would import the 300 to 600 photos I need and work with them. Putting in
the Music first is the way I think animatours usually do it. I would at least.
Q3: I would Create a new folder "Photos" and with GraphicConverter™ convert
them to high quality jpegs and into the new folder. I wouldn't do anything about
size but let iMovie do it's job. If some photos showes up flickerings premiary
in thin lines. (You need to connect Your miniDV camera to Your Mac and to
a TV-set to be able to judg final quality). Then I would manually open each of
them in PhotShop and add a little "Gaussian blurr" to them.
Of course crop to right size first.
I-sight - I have no experience of it - sorry.
Q4: I do it another way.
    a) Close iMovie
    b) find the project icon/folder
    c) Ctrl-click on it and Show package.
    d) in this there are a folder -> Shared Movies -> iDVD
    e) in this there is a QT movie nnnnnnn.mov
    - You can test this with QT-player to see that it is OK -
START A NEW iDVD project - so that old material will not interfere.
    f) drop this into an open theme in iDVD (just inside the edge of the
window) and save it as a desktop image
(if iDVD prior HD/5 You have to add a hack to make this possibly
    named HPfurz and install it)
Test this with Apple DVD-player - OK then burn it with iDVD
or Toast if You have and don’t want to re-code the movie.
(in iDVD 5 You can drop Your iMovie project icon directly into a theme window)

  • How do I make my keynote or iMovie slide show (with music) into a DVD, without iDVD as I don't have it and you can no longer purchase from Apple.

I am new to Apple, since Oct '11.  ( iDVD did not come with this laptop).  I am making a slide show in keynote and can't download to iDVD to make it into a DVD that I can play on any home player. As far as I know, I need to make it into a quicktime file, then find some 3rd party software to convert to DVD. Has anyone had any luck with this.  I think I may just purchase an old copy of iLife from Amazon...

  • Slide Show Corruption

I'm building my first iPhoto 09 slideshow, using the Sliding Panels theme. I've worked with previous versions of iPhoto, and am impressed with this theme, except ...
In one particular spot in the the slideshow, I can't adjust the picture -- it always displays larger than desired, and isn't responding to any cropping that I do. It doesn't matter which picture is in the slot, that one always is a problem.
This isn't a particularly large slideshow -- 72 pictures in total, and it's the 68th picture/slot that is bad.
I just checked Software Update, and I don't have anything needed for iPhoto.
    Any suggestions?

It's either a problem with that album, or a problem with the chosen iTunes track.
Have you tried with a different album? with a different iTunes track?

  • Garage Band made soundtrack to Quicktime slide show

Hi....I've made a soundtrack in Garage Band of 2 tracks of prerecorded music and a third voice over track. It's only about 2 minutes in length. I would like it to accompany a slide show of images I'm making in Quicktime. Can such a music file be imported into Quicktime? Do I have to join the individual tracks together somehow in order to do that? A suggested workflow would be appreciated. Thanks!
    PowerBook 17" & G4 Quicksilver desktop

This is where ilife 06 has been improved. GB will let you open your imovie "slide show" in GB and create your music and voice over and export as .mov. Also with the better integration between the iapps you could make the slide show in iphoto and just choose your GB file from the media browser. Same with imovie.
I know this can be done with 05 but apple has really done a beautiful job with 06. Now I'm not saying everyone should upgrade but if you do use other iapps it is well worth the price.

  • Slide Show problem wit Mac OS Mavericks

    Hello,
I try to use the Slide Show with LR5.5 on iMac Mavericks 10.9.4 ( and also same on MacBook Air )
I can stop the slide show with space bar but when I want to go back to the previous slide by Left Arrow or next slide by Right Arrow : Nothing appen !
The Right and Left Arrows works fine in Manual mode or on the Library module.
    Is it a bug with Mavericks/LR5 ?
    Thank you for any Help.
Excuse me if I am not in the good community

Hi thanks for the quick reply.
Yep may have to end up disabling FileVault, it's a last resort as it will decrypt the whole disk.
Rebooted to the disk utility with disk verify and repair, no problems there. but at least the disk is fine

  • Moving iPhoto slide show to iMovie

Using iPhoto, I created a slide show from a series of photos. I used the Ken Burns effect to add motion to the photos and got everything just right. I wanted to export or move the slide show to iMovie so I could add titles between certain of the photos in the slide show. I found an option to export to iDVD but not iMovie. Shouldn't I be able to move the slide show between iPhoto and iMovie? Eventually, I'll want to move my slide show from iMovie to iDVD, but I want to add the titles between the clips first. Does anyone have any advice regarding this matter?

Using iMovie HD 6, IMO it gives the user much better control over clips, stills and adding audio, you click on a still clip and then click on the Show photo settings button at the bottom of the Media pane. A translucent pane will come up where you can set the KB effect parameters.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • This is my first time using iphoto, I am trying to make a slide show that I can then burn to a dvd. The slide show is complete, but I'm not sure where to go now. Can I burn the slide show from iphoto or do I have to export to imovie or idvd?

I have completed the slide show i am making, but not sure what to do now. I want to burn it to a dvd, but not sure if i can do that from iphoto or do i need to export to imovie or idvd? If i need to export, will iphoto save a copy in iphoto? This may be really stupid, but I don't see an obvious way to save my slide show in iphoto. Please Help!

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
NOTE:  If you're running iPhoto 9.5 the export options will be different.

  • I would like to create a slide show and then burn to a DVD.  I may be interested in adding music.  Should I use iPhone, iMovie or a simple Powerpoint?

I am going to be creating a slide show and then burning it to a couple of DVDs.  I have used PPT in the past for simple slide shows for speaking engagements, but I am interested in adding music to this slide show.  What is the best/easiest application to use?  iMovie, iPhoto or Powerpoint?

burning it to a couple of DVDs
Is it your intention to create video DVDS that can be played on TV sets via DVD players?  If so you'll need a video DVD authoring application like iDVD.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.

  • Photo Quality Difference - DVD Slide Show vs iMovie

I have seen a marked difference in quality of photos in iDVD slide shows vs photos I've incorporated in iMovie. The iMovie rendered photos are very high resolution and fill the screen, whereas photos rendered as a slide show in iDVD are of poor resolution and don't fill the screen.
    Any thoughts?
    Gil

All iDVD produced videos are 'Standard Definition' - that is 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels high (give or take). Therefore, all of your megapixels are being reduced to 0.3 megapixels on the screen. There is nothing you can do about this - SD video is this size. The only thing you can do is make sure the necessary 'downscaling' is done as well as possible. For my still picture presentations on DVD, I use a program called 'Photo to Movie' (LQ Graphics), along with iDVD. It seems to do a better job of the downscaling process, along with having some neat features not in iMovie. I have produced many 'slideshows' that are certainly not HD, but are pleasing to view on an HD TV (pillarboxed). Others use 'Fotomagico' for the same purpose, but I have no experience with that program. HTH.

  • Creating Slide Show Movie in imovie from Iphoto Album

i have several Queries , firstly ,for a slide show to music ( ie no avi files ) - do I set Mode to DV/NTSC or other. Secondly, I cant work out an easy way to 'AutoSync' an album of photos to a designated Music file(s)length. Thirdly, i do have a small video component i would like to include in my slide show ,but it is in the form of 'Video-TS' file - how too ??

    Hello, scubahawkfish,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Here is a great discussion regarding slideshow creation using iPhoto vs iMovie:

If you are wanting to incorporate video, you must use iMovie. Here is an excellent explanation of synching audio to video using iMovie by Karl Petersen (always pay attention to whatever he recommends!): http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=607322&ft=y&#607322
Here is help for synching an iDVD slideshow with audio if you decide to skip using the video and just go with iPhoto: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/243.html

  • Playing video parallel to slide show in iMovie 09

    Hello guys,
I couldn't find a clue on google, so I try my luck here in this forum. Currently, I am working on an iMovie 09 project. This project shall include pictures as well as videos. As I don't want to wait for the video to finish in order to see the pictures, I would like to have the video played in the upper right corner and parallely see the slide show of the pictures in the left and lower right corner with a black background.
Is there any possibility to make this work in iMovie 09? I have tried a little bit the picture-in-picture function but it is not quite what I need as the pictures are displayed in full screen and the video partly covers the pictures...
Thank you very much in advance for some hints!
    Best regards,
    Gerritos

    Hi
May be I'm not understanding to 100% but I get the idea that You want to play a movie and a SlideShow in parallel and be able to stop / forward one or the other independently.
On a DVD this is as I see it impossibly. But You didn't say so either.
    I would
_ prepare movie to a QuickTime .mov movie
    _ so the SlideShow too
Then connect a Mac to a big Flat-screen or Projector
Start both movies in QuickTime - and set QuickTime player to play even if there is more than one QT.mov playing at same time. (in QT-preferences - You can select this)
No You can let a movie play in one window and start/stop a SlideShow in another and all to be viewed on a larg screen or via projector.

  • IPhoto books and slide shows vs. iMovie

I have put an iBook together and it looks great. To play it in a slide show with text and titles is wonderful. The problem is that I cheated. I fooled iBook into making double trucks (two page spreads) of some of my photos...Looks great in book form but plays as left page/right page in a slide show. Not good. I could just make a slide show from a folder...But then I get no text page or title page. If I make an iMovie of my images, they look soft (out of focus) and I am limited in the amount of text I can output. If there is a way to get print into the iPhoto slide show, I would be happy. Any ideas?

If you had iDVD on an older Applications DVD disc that came with an older Mac install that and then make sure you use Software Update before you try to start the program. You could also try doing software update now and see if any newer upgrades/updates are available.
I suspect what they transfered is an older version that will not run on the new OS X. Once updated/upgraded to a newer version it will work.
But then you may need to do a reinstall first.
