IMovie slowness - appreciate yr opinion

I am a novice mac user
using Macbook 2G with 2G memory OSX 10.5.8
Using imovie 09, doing something very simple
importing "events" from sony HDD HD camera ( using regular not high definition)
and then publishing movies to media browser and then creating DVD in iDVD etc
I find that after I created a project with about 90 minutes of video footage, creating an iDVD is a very lengthy process. ( publishing on media browser is 4 hrs, plus creating the iDVD itself takes hours)
is this normal ? is it that I have very low spec hardware for this operation? or perhaps I am doing something wrong. ?

Yes that is normal.
There is a lot of encoding to do in both iMovie and iDVD.

  • Imovie slows down then freezes while importing from camera

I am trying to import a movie from my canon hv10. I've never had problem the last 2 movies I did. but this time around it starts importing, and a few clips later, slows down to 1/8th time. then freezes. The camera is still playing but it has stopped importing. I have tried to pause it to let it catch up. Restarting it numerous times. It is being imported into my 500 GB hard drive. I have 400 GB available. It's worked before in HD. Any ideas? anything would be helpful, I've searched every single message board so far. thanks.

I had a smilar problem. it came up when I changed OS to Leopard OS X 10.5.
My Imovie HD 5 had been working fine until then under earlier OS versions, both in LP as well as in normal mode. Then all of a sudden importing stopped eery few seconds.
I checked many discussions in this forum and tried a lot of suggested solutions, to no avail. I have now come to realise that Leopard is the problem, not the camera, the cable, or preferences or good old iMovie HD.
I simply went back to an older laptop (iBook) running OS 10.3.9 and iMovie 3 . No problem whatsoever importing clips (just had to start a new project about every 20 minutes of clip import). Then attached my external harddrive via firewire, copied the projects to the Hard Disk and then opened them with iMovie HD 5 and bingo: the project was OK and could be further worked on.
So that does not solve the basic problem, but is not too complicated as workaround.

  • Imovie slow to save to file

When I want to Share iMovie project to file it takes over 10 hours for it to process to the theatre or file as an mp4? Why does it take 10 hours to share a project in iMovie????? All of this program is slow, it is not user friendly, and like PC items I have to keep purchasing new programs to burn a DVD or avi file? I can't just download from carmera and burn a avi DVD? Why is this not easy?
    M

hi, i couldn't follow all this but
how much free space do you have
highlight your hard drive icon and command+i (get info)
    how many GB are Available
    next,
have you booted off the Install DVD and ran
    Disk Utility> Repair Disk
do you have any results (errors) in red text
if Disk Utility can't repair them check out DiskWarrior (or Erase, restore backup)
have you created a New User account and tested
have you ran the latest Apple COMBO UPDATE for your operating system
have you ran all Apple and Adobe updates
have you used a utility like Cocktail OSX to clear your caches and run all your maintenance scripts
have you reset (zapped) the PRAM and rest the logic board (may be called a PMU reset on an iMac, not sure)
have you added any 3rd party software that may interfer with the OS-Finder
have you added any photoshop plugins
check (can you post a similar screenshot of your plugins):
(to take a screenshot, Shift+Option+4 and drag the area you want, then Insert Image on your response)
Lastly, if nothing else works, you may be better served by Erasing your HD and starting over (Time Machine backup may save your bacon unless the problem was backed up into your backup)...

  • IMovie slow to load after installing SSD

Hi everyone, I have just installed an SSD in the spare optical drive bay of my Mac Pro and added RAM.
(Specs below.) I did a clean install of SL.
Before I did this I was booting from the 320GB drive that came with the computer and I have all my photos and video on a 2 drive RAID 0.
Before iMovie would launch in 11 seconds for the first launch and 6 seconds thereafter. That included loading projects and events.
Now it takes about 1 second to launch but 40 seconds to load the projects and events every time.
I have ditched pref files and retried but no good.
    Any suggestions?

Yes, but the test is based on a 128k file, written many many times. That's fine with that, but video files imported into iMovie's cache area are not 128k large; they are much much larger especially when you're working with HD footage! You can also do another test and that is to completely wipe out your SSD drive and start over. After install, run iMovie 11 again and see. If it loads fast with the events, then you know that's the best that drive can do under your typical usage. However, if the drive still behaves exactly the same before and after a clean install, then something is wrong with the drive.
I don't believe there's any issues with your optical bay since it supports a SATA connection. You can check under system profile to see what link mode it is in now. For your Sandforce SSD, ideally it should be negotiating at 3Gbps rather than 1.5.
Personally, I have the same drives RAIDed in RAID 0 on my PC and while it is fast, it does slow down when I did too many big video writes despite what they claim as being trouble TRIM free. But with the slight slowdown, it is still much better and faster than a physical RAID 0 hard drive.

  • Can't get to imovie slow motion...

    hi
so i understand that in this version of imovie you're meant to double click a clip in order to bring up the "inspector" that can allow me to speed up/slow down clips etc.
but, when i double click, all the clip does is play. forgive me for being incredibly stupid, but it's bugging the **** out of me.
    any tips?
    thanks

so i understand that in this version of imovie you're meant to double click a clip in order to bring up the "inspector" that can allow me to speed up/slow down clips etc.
Re-check the iMovie version. iMovie '08 has no "built-in" motion effects. If you are referring to a video tutorial, it is probably depicting how to apply speed changes in iMovie '09 which has yet to be released.

  • IMovie Slowed Right Down

What causes iMovie to slow wayyy down? It was dreadful last week when I was using it.  I cleaned up my PC system but I am about to make another movie and I don't need it to happen again. I have about 10 movies in iMovie.

You are in a banded profile probably due to router dropping connection or manual resets or both
Your connection will get out of banding if you stay connected 24/7 for 3/5days. Your noise margin will reduce to 15db with your speed increasing. Your noise margin will continue to fall over next few weeks with speed increasing each time it drops

  • Imovie slow to open after ssd installation

Hello - I have a new 2012 mac pro 6 core.  I just installed 256 GB crucial SSD with apps and OS only (40GB).  User files are on  2TB HD.  Everything boots well and all other programs open fast except imovie.  It is very sluggish and slower than on original boot drive.  It is better if I list with login items and it opens at start.  I have repaired disk permissions.  I have read a few threads of this happening elsewhere but no real resolution.  I am not married to the SSD (I can reutn it) and was primarily hoping it would HELP with imovie performance vs make at least opening slower.  I have checked system profiler and my CPU, RAM dont seem to be pushing any limits.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Not the guide I would have, and this question has been part of dozens and every "dedicated SSD" thread here.

    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/00E03B83-1ADA-406E-A940-396D39F 598EA.html
HOW did you put the OS on the SSD? CCC or something; or from fresh install?
    Setup Assistant?
What was the original boot drive? I take it not the 2TB drive you have now for User/myaccount/
I don't see his telling you to copy the user folders. They leave them where they are, which means leaving the old system and drive as it was but now for your user account. We are more of the pull the old drive after you copy your user account to a new hard drive to a folder.
4 x 2GB is okay but the way things get loaded into memory I like to have extra.

  • Imovie - slowing down and speeding up videos?

Hi, i have the latest imovie and i'm having difficulty knowing how to speed my videos up and slow them down. I can't find the option to do that. On the older version of imovie, i clicked ' media '
but the one i got from ilife..i'm just not sure.
    Anybody know?

.. hmm, well.. nor sure about that 'better'.. I'm receiving a lot of 'help' mails esp, for that advice.. that JESDI app is a beast, and some people fail to mangle it
but, IF you manage to use it, the results are superb due to the pro-feature of 'frame blending', I excessively use it now for all my soccer-videos.. the iMovie slowmo often fails to avoid stutter on final DVDs.. with JESDI, I feel like a broadcast director

  • Import into IMovie slows and stops

Halfway through an import of film from my camcorder, the image loading on IMovie goes into slow motion and stops the import. The playback rate on the camera is at normal speed. I'm using a Sony Handycam DCR-HC26. This is the first time this has happened.

    Try it and see!
You should have at least 25GB, better still 40GB, available to import and edit movies. There are a lot of swap files going on in the background.

  • Imovie slow motion

i was wondering if there is a feature in the latest imovie that allows you to make some specific points in the movie "slow motion". thanks.

I, too, started searching for video effects in iMovie 8 to add slow motion. There is no way to do this in iM8. However, after reading other posts in this discussion I decided to go back to iM6. That's when the light bulb turned on...
I exported the video from my iM8 project, imported the same clip into iM6, added the slow motion then exported in DV quality to import in iM8. It worked!! Yes, I know it's a long way around but it got the job done.
I should mention that it is not obvious how to go about exporting an original DV video from iM8 so here are the steps I followed:
    1) Select the video clips
    2) Select Share->Export Using Quicktime
    3) Click on "Options..."
    4) Select Video Settings
    5) Select Compression Type ->DV/DVCPRO NTSC (or PAL)
    6) Set Compressor Quality to High
    7) Click OK
    8) Name and save your video clip then modify it in iM6
After you modify it in iM6 drag into the Event Library over the project you wish to add it to.
    Good luck.

  • Imovie slow loading

I am creating a highlight tape for a student. I have downloaded the game footage into imovie however it is incredibly slow.

    Hi
If it is HD-video and a moderate Mac !/2 to 1/4 import speed is common.
The material has to be converted to a type that iMovie or FinalCut can handle.
When imported it should play at full speed.
Lot's of free space on internal (start-up) hard disks might help a bit (>25Gb + 40Gb
per hour material to be imported)

  • IMovie slowing down and stops

    Hi there,
I've got a strange problem and i could not find anything on the web.
I'm working with iMovie for over a year with no problems.
Recently I wanted to edit a (already capured) project.
If I press the start button, the movie starts running but not smoothly.
After a while (or when I use the slider) the movie goes into a slow motion and stops.
It's like pulling out the plug of a film machine.
The sound is playing on normal speed for about three seconds en then stops.
I've had this problem with OSX 10.3.9 and with the new 10.4.5 version.
The captured movies and projects are stored on a external firewire hard drive (Maxtor one touch 160Gb firewire/USB 2.0)
I've tried to operate this disc on the USB 2.0 port but the problem does not go away.
I also installed the firewire update driver from Maxtor but with no succes.
My system works perfectly with all other applications including Logic pro
There is enough memory installed and the system is "heavy" enough (dual 1.8 G5 with more than 1 Gb memory)
I hope someone knows a solution for this problem
    Greetings,
    Richard

Thanks for the quick replies on my question.
Well, My internal hard drive is only 80Gb!
    That's why I bought a 160Gb External.
Until January iMovie worked fine with this configuration.
I don't have so much expierience with Apple, but with PC's it was often a conflict with other programs.
Can this be the problem with my Almighty Apple??
    Perhaps it's because I've installed Adobe CS1?
(adobe can cause lots of problems and errors in a PC enviroment)
The transfer rate of the External hard drive isn't the cause because Logic pro runs perfectly good.
And with multitrack audio you absolutely need a high transfer rate.

  • New iMovie slow and crashing

Why Apple, why?!!  It's my first time using the new iMovie tonight, and I thought I'd be done editing my 45 minute video about three hours ago.  Instead, I'm only about 10 minutes into the content, as I've been dealing with lagging, spinning color wheels, sound distortion, sound disappearing completely (seriously, it disappeared from one small section, and then 10 seconds later, all the sound was gone), and then finally crashing.  Fun!
After restarting, the video is also dragging and freezing at times.  I tried to export just a minute of my edits to see what I was going to get.  It told me it would be about three minutes to do the export.  About 25 minutes later, the progress appeared to be only about 20% done.
So really, why introduce an upgrade if it's a pain to use.  Yet this is becoming the norm with upgrades.  I can't just use them.  I have to relearn stuff and deal with crashing headaches and such.  I loved Apple when I could just turn on a computer, or install new software and go.  Those days are apparently gone.
Is it just me, or is there a simple solution that I'm just not seeing?

You can do as much as you like but iMovie '09 for some reason does not like lots of events however there is one solution, either reduce the amount of video you have in there, move it else where or this also worked for me...
Movies > Movie Events > Drag everything in there on your desktop.
    Lauch iMovie, Quit iMovie
Drag everything back, do the same for iMovie Projects aswell.
If this does not help just drag some events out there onto your desktop or else where and then when you want to work with them drag them back in, the same goes for your projects.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMovie slow imports

My girlfriend's computer is nearly identical to mine, both early-2008 macbook 13 inch 2.4GHz. She has 10.5.8, I have 10.6.4. We both have iLife'08 with iMovie HD '08. We both imported an identical movie file, which is approx. 150MB and 30 minutes long. It took me a few seconds to import the file, and 5 minutes to generate thumbnails. It took her about 15-20 minutes. Is there any reason for this happening?

Further information: The file is a 30 minute long H.264 MP4 file made (by me) with HandBrake. As well as importing slowly, it also scrubs slowly, it does not respond fast enough and is almost impossible to work with. Her other files work perfectly fine, but also import similarly slowly.
