IMovie SSSSLLLLOOOOOWWW when scrubbing (skimming) through clips

I've narrowed down my slow problem to this: scrubbing (skimming; moving the cursor through the clips) causes my machine to pause for seconds for EACH mouse movement, sometimes with the spinning colour pinwheel. This makes editing impossibly slow. I tried turning audio off, but that doesn't seem to help.
I've gone back to using iMovie HD because it's fast and snappy. I like some of the features of iMovie '08, but these delays after each mouse move makes getting work done impossible (unless I don't mind editing taking weeks instead of an evening).

Sorry, this went into the wrong discussion group, and I don't see how to delete the post.

  • Audio won't play when I'm skimming through clips on iMovie

The audio of the clips I have on iMovie won't play when I'm skimming through them, but will play when I play the clips. I made sure the volume of every clip and on the computer works (it does) but this is getting really annoying. Can anyone please help me out?

To Reboot your computer, select /Shutdown... from the top menu. Wait a few seconds, then turn your computer back on with the on switch.
You don't really have to know what a swapfile is, but here is a simplified explanation.
Your computer comes with a processor (Intel 2.8 ghz in my case), memory (2GB in my case), and a hard drive (500GB in my case).
The processor is very fast. The memory holds the instructions and the data that the processor will work on next. Long term storage is kept on the hard drive, which is slower. Think of the following metaphor: You are sitting at a desk. You are the processor. Your desktop is the memory, which contains the stuff you are ready to act on. Stuff you have already acted on, or will not need until later, is in the drawers or in a file cabinet (the hard drive).
Let's say you are working in several applications at once: iMovie, Microsoft Word, iTunes, Calendar, and Safari. Each of these programs needs some of your memory to function, and to get stuff to the processor for action. If you add all the memory requirements up, it may be more than the 2GB of "real" memory that you have. Fortunately, OSX lets you use virtual memory, so your programs can pretend they have as much memory as they need. Your programs can address memory as if they had a whole bunch of memory all to themselves.
This is done through swapfiles. When there is more virtual memory than real memory, the programs and data that have been used least recently are swapped out to hard disk in a swapfile. This file is not the permanent storage. It is the temporary parking place for memory when the real memory is being used by another application.
So lets say you want to use iMovie. It might take up 1GB out of your 2GB. There is not room, so OSX looks around and sees that you haven't used iTunes in a while. So the itunes instructions and music about to be played is swapped our to a swapfile on the harddisk.
If you decide you want to listen to iTUnes, you will have to wait a few seconds as iTunes is swapped back in to real memory, and something else is swapped out.
This is a simple case. It can get more complicated.
But, as you run more and more programs, the real memory gets used up and there might be seven or eight swapfiles out on disk. At some point, OSX gets sluggish and has a hard time dealing with this. For example, if two large swapfiles needed to be paged in at the same time, there might not be room. Also, the real memory can get fragmented, and have open space, but the open space is not big enough to swap something in.
I run a free utility called Memory Stick that shows me how many swapfiles I currently have. If I am working on something critical in iMovie, and I notice that I have a lot of swapfiles, I will usually just reboot and start over with 1 swapfile. In doing this, I hope to avoid the spinning beach ball that happens when OSX can't handle it any more.
You don't really need to know this. OSX handles it for you. But understanding how it works can help you self-diagnose some problems from time to time.

  • Problem with imovie crashing when trying to import clips

I just purchased an imac, connected my video camera (panasonic hd camera) and opened imovie, it shows my two movie clips in the preview window within imovie and then crashes (says relaunch, quit or ignore). Any suggestions?
Should I just install the drivers that came with my video camera? I thought Imovie would just detect my camera (which it does) and then work properly without crashing the program). thanks for the help!

This worked for me with a Panasonic HDC-SD9:
Check Software Update under the Apple logo in the menu bar. If you see Quicktime 7.5 update, install it. After installation, go into Software Update again. If you see iMovie 7.1.2 update and iDVD 7.0.2 update, install them. Try downloading clips again. If it still does not work you will have to reformat the card which will destroy any clips. Good luck!

  • IMovie crashes when I move a clip between events

    Hi,
I have tried to move a clip from one event to another but every time I try this process iMovie just crashes! Does anyone else suffer from the same problem?
    Cheers
    Ben

This is a resume of the log crash:
I have the same problem. Also the same when I tried to trash events or part of them.
It's an user problem. If I transfer the clip to another user iMovie works fine.
Things that already I have done: - Eliminate the last imported events manually. - Repair permissions. - Eliminate the user preferences. - Reconstruct, (I think) the data base of iMovie events. I have eliminated the folders iMovieCache, iMovieThumbnails of all the events, forcing i Movie to create new ones.
This is the log of crash. Thanks in advance for the help.

  • When scrubbing through all of my clips, the video lags and there is a green frame that stays on the screen.

In the viewer, not the timeline, I scrub through the media that I have (1080i video) and the video lags. There is also a green frame that hovers over where the cursor is when scrubbing and I can't see the clips. Final Cut should be running smoothly...

  • No audio when scrubbing through clips

Out of the blue, i find i'm no longer about to hear the audio when scrubbing through clips either using the cursor or the left-right arrow keys. I can hear the audio find when playing the clip at normal speed, but when i scrub through the clip or play it one frame at a time using the left or right arrow keys I get know audio. This problem occurs on all sequences, even for old projects that have been edited previously where i was able to scrub through the clips. I've looked at all my user preferences and project preferences and i don't see any setting that would seem to affect the audio scrubbing. any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Didn't see that option. Much appreciated.
    But it is there:-)

  • Choppy scrub through clips?

Why is it that 90% of the time- When I scrub through clips in the viewer or in the timeline it is not a nice smooth movement. It is very choppy as it skips through the footage. But-
Occasionally- it does scrub through the footage as if it's a knife through butter.
It sometimes depends on the clips- certain clips scrub is nice others choppy.
Sometimes a relaunch helps- but not much.
    Why all the inconsistencies?
I would like to think it should always scrub through with ease.
    What could be causing this?
I use the same settings and set-up.
(XDCAM footage in a XDCAM timeline. G-tech espeed RAID )

OK- so I purchased Disk warrior4 and I tried to rebuild directory (G-Tech eS RAID) and both times my screen gets wiped gray and I get a K panic telling me to hold down power to restart computer.
I re-boot and get this report:

  • Issue with Clipping Mask when scrubbing timeline

Has anyone encountered an issue with editing a clipping mask or repositioning it on the timeline only to see that nothing moves on the timeline when scrubbing the playhead?
This has occurred multiple times on different Edge Animate projects.
So far this has happened on SVGs, pngs, basic shapes, etc.
I posted a video in my adobe cc folder to view as a reference.
    I'm using OS X 10.10.3 and Edge Animate 2014.1.1

I right click on the clip in Timeline, choose Effects Mask > Apply
The rectangular mask appears on the screen, I drag one corner in to make it smaller - what the exact dimensions are I know not. The logo I need covered happens to be almost at the exact center of the screen.
I choose the EDIT Tab > Brightness/Contrast > Set the levels so the mask is perfectly white (thus, covering up the logo) > Apply > Done
The preview works. When I output as AVI, MOV, MPG, MP4, etc., the mask that I placed over the logo has now moved either above where I originally placed it or above and to the left.
I have no idea how to answer the second part of your question.

All of the Spry files are missing and the basic_fs.css.  It's a long list.  If you use Chrome or Safari, you can view source (Safari) or Inspect Element (Chrome) and under Resources you will see the missing files highlighted.

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

  • When you delete a clip in iMovie where does it go

When you delete a clip in iMovie where does it go? Is there a trash in imovie?

Where are you deleteing from?  Deleting clips from an Event moves them to the Trash.
Deleteing from a Project only removes it from the project and not from the source Event.
    (I'm refereing to iMovie '11)

  • I downloaded movies from my ipad to my mac and they went directly into iphoto.  In imovie, I want to put these clips together and when I go to events or albums where these are located, they aren't there.  Help!

I downloaded movies from my ipad2 to my Mac and they went directly into iphoto.  In imovie, I want to put these clips together but when I go to find the movies in events or albums where they are stored, they are not there.  So, they show up in iphoto, but not I movie.  I tried exporting them to desktop then to imovie, that didn't work either.  Please help!  How do I get my movie clips from my ipad2 to show up in imovie when creating?

They are not in the "events library" of imovie.

  • Why does audio drop out when scrubbing iMovie events?

Why. does audio drop out when scrubbing iMovie events?

If the audio returns if you slow down scrubbing you are probably just scrubbing too quickly.

  • When I export an iMovie Project with a sped up clip, the sound is squeaky even though I lowered the pitch in iMovie. Help?

I've lowered the pitch of th video in iMovie, but when exported, the sound is very high pitched and squeaky.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use iMovie. There's an iMovie Support Community where everybody uses iMovie. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie

  • My Camcorder shoots 24fps and I set my iMovie project at 24fps.  But when I add the clip, it's saying that the clip is at 30fps?  Am I doing something wrong?

But when I add the clip, it's saying that the clip is at 30fps?  Am I doing something wrong?

Let me tell you this: don't worry about it.
No one is able to tell very easily if the video is in 24 or 30 fps. You can only see the difference between, like, 14 and 24 fps. Just dismiss it and move on. It's all fine.
(the only time that I personally need to make sure my camera is shooting at it's highest fps, is when I will be putting the vidoe into slow motion.)
