IMovie still won't import after Toast conversion

For awhile I had been using Voltaic to convert AVCHD files to .mov files for editing in iMovie. That worked OK but was inconsistent on large files (2GB+). So I switched to Toast 10 after hearing is was faster and could handle the larger files. I converted a batch of files in Toast and iMovie will not let me import the converted files (.mov). they are ghosted in the edit/import/ file selection box. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I figured that iMovie could import any .mov files.
The files range in size from `100MB to 4GB.
Thanks.

I figured that iMovie could import any .mov files.
Wrong! MOV is just a generic QT file container. iMovie '08/'09 will only import what it can edit -- DV, AIC, Animation, Video, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPE, and/or supported profiles of MPEG-4 or H.264 along with compatible audio compression formats. Also, it will not import compatible files if they contain extraneous data tracks like text, Tween, chapter, closed caption, soft subtitles, AC3 audio, etc.

  • IMovie HD won't import from Sony HDR-HC1

iMovie HD 5.0.2 (111) on my G5 desktop controls, but won't import from, my new little Sony HDR-HC1 1080i DV camcorder. Same was the case with my 12" 1 GHz PowerBook until, at the advice of a Manhattan Beach Genius Bar tech, I did an archive reinstall of 10.4 and a reinstall of iMovie HD on both my G5 PowerMac and G4 PowerBook and then downloaded all the updates. Now my PowerBook works, but my PowerMac still won't import. On an empty second HD in my PowerMac I installed OS 10.4 and iMovie HD ONLY (to create as sterile as possible of an environment), made the 2nd HD my startup drive, and still iMovie HD on my PowerMac will not import from this camera (although it will from an older Sony VX-1000 regular def camcorder).
Does anybody have any solutions, or any idea why iMovie HD now imports on my PowerBook but after the same makeover still won't on my PowerMac?
Per earlier posts, I tried playing some piano notes in Garage Band, trashing the iMovie preference files, and reinstalling QuickTime (the tech had heard QT 7.0.3 could be at fault from becoming corrupted in certain updating combinations), all to no avail.

I have had import/capture problems using FW drives with FCE/iMovie5 and my 2gig iMac. My canon GL2 works fine but only when no other FW devices are connected to the FW port I use the computers internal drive to capture. If your using the G5's internal SATA drives this (below) may not apply.

Some G5 users have had to purchase a FW PCI card or have the G5 front FW port replaced. Check this link.

  • IMovie'11 won't import mp4 movies

I have some large mp4 files that I'm trying to import into iMovie so I can edit them into shorter clips.
When I select "open with", iMovie is greyed out.
I can open the movie with QuickTime, and select export to iMovie, and the file appears in the iMovie dropbox on my computer, but iMovie still won't open it, or even recognise that the movie is there.
When I try "import" in iMovie and select the file, it takes about 10 hours importing, and then nothing happens, no error message, nothing, I just see iMovie open, and unchanged.
I am using iMovie'11 version 9.0.7 amd Mac OSx 10.8

FCP 7.0.3, Canon XF100, saved some clips to a portable hard drive and now they won't import?  Tried moving them back to the CompactFlash but still won't import?  iMac, 10.6.8

Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...
    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    >I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure?  Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening.  If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work.  Do you have the right files?

  • IMovie'11 won't import video from Mini DV tape

Hi, i don't know what happend, just two days ago everything was working fine, but now for some reason when importing window comes up it doesn't show any picture from play mode and it doesn't import any video. Help me please!

    Hi
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • IMovie suddenly won't import

    Hi gang-
I've been having such problems with all my Apple applications since my Mavericks upgrade, now iMovie
I've been using a Canon Vixia HF R21 for a few years and haven't had any import problems other than long/large files slowing my computer a bit during import.
Today I shot an 8 minute video, no changes to camera settings, and suddenly iMovie (version 10.0.2) won't import.
The import window opens, I select the single clip, hit import, and the import window minimizes, all like normal. However the "importing clock" icon never appears on the iMovie header, and if I check the selected library date/folder for import or reopen the import window clearly nothing is happening. I can reselect the clip over and over and nothing happens.
iPhoto quickly and easily imported the clip (for a change, har) but of course that version is crap quality for editing and etc.
I've searched the forums to no avail. Tried ejecting and re-mounting the camera and iMovie a dozen times including permutations with iMac restarts. Nothing seems to work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks all,
    Matthew

Given that you don't have access to a Windows machine, you are of course right! For me, after having bought this splendid MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express, I didn't feel like throwing money after non-apple vendors just to get access to my files.
For me, it was just more sense to attack the root of the problem (problem with the AVCHD files) so iMovie and FCE gets the AVCHD structure as they expect to see it.
That the solution turned to be a windows program was just an accident (no problem for me).
Actually, to correct the file structure cannot be a difficult task, and there must be a mac solution somewhere, that does it better than that windows program!
Jader's description matches my case 100%, so I'm pretty sure that until the card is corrected (easiest is reformatted) the problem won't go away. As soon as this is done, importing will work - until something happens again with the file structure.
Please also note that this problem with iMovie and FCE has been documented by others long ago.
I must admit that I am surprised that conversion (and not correction) seems to be the preferred solution. But since conversion is so much used it must be OK. Just didn't work for me, iMovie virtually stopped when I tried.

  • Imovie crashes/won't import

I had a problem importing video from my sony TRV-250 into imovie 5 back when I first got my iMac. I called APPLE, reset PRAM and thought the issue was fixed because I was able to import. Hadn't tried again until now, and suddenly I find I'm in the same boat. It shows that the camera is connected but won't import, and crashes when I try to control the camera from the iMovie controls. I reset PRAM and that didn't work as it did the last time. I unplugged everything from the firewire ports(camera and ext. hard drive), restarted the computer and tried the bottom port with the top empty and it suddenly DID import, but stopped after 12 seconds and then wouldn't recognize my camera at all. It didn't even show that a device was connected in system profiler. I started over, resetting PRAM and restarting the computer with empty ports, and now it's importing. But it will only work from the top port, not the bottom. Does this make any sense at all? Why do I have to reset PRAM every-time I want to import video from my camera? If anyone has a similar issue or can shed some light on this I would really appreciate it.
    iMac G5 20 rev. B   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The only thing that makes it work is resetting PRAM everytime. Even then, only 1 of my FW ports will work. The other one always causes iMovie to crash. Unless I have a bad camera, bad RAM, or a bad FW port, it's not anything else on your list because I've checked it. My OS is updated from Thanks for your help. I'm lost.
Also I have updated everything. You mentioned that QT and OS shouldn't be updated. Is this what you meant? If so, do I have to reinstall the OS to go back to the old version? THANKS

    Welcome to discussions!
WMV files are Windows files and (forgive me if this sounds rude) i doubt they have ever worked..at least without some type of program to convert them to a files that iMovie understands.

  • IMovie HD won't import audio files

We have several dozen sound effects CDs that we imported to AIFF files through iTunes. Now, iMovie won't import the AIFF files. If you select them using Import or just drag and drop them onto the audio timeline, it just beeps and doesn't import them.
Importing them into FCP ans playing them back through the QT player and iTunes works fine.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd really like to avoid having to reimport the sounds off the CDs.

I did find that if the offending files were upsampled to 48 khz/16 bit instead of the usual 44.1 khz/16 bit, iMovie would accept them without any problem.
    iMovie's help file says:
"Tip: For the best compatibility with iMovie HD transitions, effects, titles, and the Ken Burns Effect, you should record your video with 48 kilohertz (kHz), 16-bit audio. Check your camera's manual for instructions on setting the audio bit rate and depth."
Even though these aren't video files with audio, it seems like it likes 48 khz/16 bit files.

  • IMovie still fails to import H.264 properly

With the release of 10.6.3 and iMovie 8.0.6 I made a new try importing H.264 1080i50 from my Samsung HMX-H105. See the following thread for the old discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1997748
    In the current release,
    1) Importing without optimizing, the aspect ratio is wrong inside iMovie as before
    2) Importing with Optimize Full gives an AIC file with the correct resolution
    3) Importing with Optimize Large gives an AIC file with the wrong resolution (1706x504)
Problems with 2) are that the conversion takes time, quality is degraded and file size is increased.
Playback in QT Player has changed in 10.6.3. Motion blur is now added and the interlacing is a lot less visible when I play the original files from the camera.
Does anyone know which parts of H.264/AVC are properly implemented in iMovie?
Can I add anything to my system to alter the way iMovie handles H.264?
Are there other editing software for the Mac with better H.264 support?
    /jonas

This is me replying with a different AppleID. It's a long story...
Anyway, thanks for your help. I converted to AIC using MPEG Streamclip as you described. The resulting looks the same or very close to the the original when played in QT, and the file can be imported into iMovie without the problems that I get with the original H.264 file.
So, I wonder why QT and MPEG Streamclip can read the file while iMovie fails to do it properly?
About Apple's list of camcorders. The Samsung HMX-H105 is very recently released and I would have been surprised if it had been on Apples list. Surely there must be cameras NOT on the list with H.264 files that import to iMovie? It would be nice to understand better why some H.264 file import ok and some do not.
Have Apple published the H.264 profiles and levels that it is compatible with? Isn't Quicktime used for importing?
Will going through AIC significantly decrease the quality of my recordings, it will be a re-compress using MPEG2, right? I noticed that IMovie was a lot snappier working with AIC compared to H.264 (at least with my partially failed import), that is a plus. The file size, of course, is not.
From MPEG Streamclip, I get the following file info of the original. Is there anything in it that stands out as peculiar? Why 25 fps and not 50i or something?
    Stream: HDV_0004.MP4
    Path: ~/Desktop/HDV_0004.MP4

It's fixed by changing the account name (Apple ID) and password

  • Imovie '09 won't import '08 files HELP!

I imported all my camera contents into iMovie '08 and all worked well. Later, my hard drive crashed so I upgraded to iMovie '09 with the new hard drive. My iMovies files were retrieved from an external hard drive backup. When I try to import the new files, IMovie '09 will not read them--it's like the files are empty (but they really aren't). Some are .mov files, some .dv files. Any suggestions?

Hi Suzq - don't want to alarm you, but are you aware of the following when importing video from iMovie HD projects:
Only the source video is imported; any additions or changes you’ve made to the video in your project are not imported. When you import video from iMovie HD projects:
    ● All clips from the clip viewer are added to a new Event.
    ● All clips from the timeline are added to a new project.
    ● Any clip that was dragged into the project from the Finder is not added to the new project.
    ● All transitions are replaced by cross-dissolve transitions.
    ● No titles or effects that were applied to the video are transferred to the new project.
    ● No music is transferred to the new project.
    ● Any clip that was dragged into the project from the Finder is not imported; only video clips that were imported from a camcorder into the original iMovie HD project are imported to the new project.
The above was extracted from iMovie '09's Help topic "Importing video from iMovie HD projects".

  • Audio Won't Import After First Clip

So I'm having this weird glitch in Premiere the last few days.
The first video clip I drag into a timeline works fine. But after that, any clip I drag from the Project window onto the timeline will ONLY give me video - not audio... even though I know the audio is there. It even plays in the source preview window.
The only way to get both again after the first time is to drag multiple clips onto the timeline at once. That works for some reason.
Restarting the program doesn't alleviate the problem, and neither does restarting the computer. I've tried resetting my preferences, but that did not work. I also tried reinstalling the program, but that didn't work, either.
I can't seem to find anyone else on the web talking about this problem.
Anybody seen this before or have any ideas? It's super annoying.
Edit for more info: The "Drag Audio Only" function in the source window also will not work at all. "Drag Video Only" works fine.
Meanwhile, going back to Adobe Premiere CC (Rather than CC 2014) there is no such problems. But I can't do that on projects I'm already working on in CC 2014...

So I talked to customer support and they told me what to do. Apparently you need to make sure the "A1" on the very left is highlighted or it won't work. It will still import the first one since it's a new sequence, but after that you're sunk. I wonder why I never encountered this before. Oh well. Good to know.

  • IMOVIE 08 - Won't import video made from KEYNOTE 08

I have exported my slides made on Keynote 08 in every video codec that imovie supposidly supports, DV, MPEG-4, .MOV and it still wont open it. Thank god that when I downloaded imovie HD 06, that IT is able to open every file that I saved as above. I thought that i could then create the project in 06 and just use imovie 08 to do the editing. -WRONG. It won't open any other project other than its own. This is the WORST piece of software and implementation of an upgrade yet. I called apple support and all they can say right now is, "yes I have tried to reproduce this and you are right, I'll let them know."

I have Exactly the same problem - I've even gone as far as to record the slideshow in Keynote and then try to import it into iMovie. Nothing.
To top it off I have an added problem with Keynote recording - that I can't get it to record my voice PLUS the quicktime playback pauses the image & you have to prompt the quicktime player to advance to the next slide.
Apple; if you read this, I find it amazing that you have just sold me (two updated) packages iLife & iWork which don't work together and don't do what the older versions of these programes did...
