IMovie Storage and editing Problems

I am new to this! Transfering DV tape approx 1 hour to IMOVIE
message comes up "Not enough space on disc". (using Macbook)..I have fitted a firewire Lacie 250mb ext hd., run IMOVIE from there but it wont let me use this as a default drive. How do I do this please so I can (a) transfer intially and (b) edit?

Make sure the LaCie drive uses the disk format iMovie requires. If it doesn't, iMovie won't be happy.
The project MUST reside on a disk that uses the "Mac OS Extended" disk format (optionally followed by "Journaled"). If the disk uses some other format, iMovie can't reliably save the project to disk.
Internal disks use the correct format, but many FireWire drives purchased off the shelf use a different format. When you buy a disk, always check the format.
To check the format, Control-click on the disk icon in the Finder and choose "Get Info" from the popUp menu. The disk format is shown in the window that opens.
If necessary, use Disk Utility to reformat the disk. WARNING: that erases all the files on the disk, so make backups.
It doesn't hurt to reformat a new disk anyway. A freshly-formatted disk is more reliable. Some users have reported iMovie problems going away after reformatting an external disk that already had the "right" format. Disks can have problems that reformatting solves.

External storage for early 08 mac pro for video storage and editing

Early 08 Mac Pro mod 3.1, 2x Intel 2.8 Quad Core Processors. Bus speed 1.6 Ghz. 10 GB DDR2 FB-Dimm 800 MHz. USB2, Firewire 400, 800. ATI Radeon HD 2600 PCIe 256 mbVRAM. Currently running OS 10.6.8.
I use machine for photo and video storage and editing. I tried using 2x 3TB and 2x1TB HDD internally ( 8 TB total). All are Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200. Experienced constant spinning wheel and lockup requiring manual shutdown. I had upgraded to Lion and to Maverick. Did not help so I did a clean install of primary with Snow Leopard and did not install past 10.6.8. Works now if I don’t exceed 3.5 TB internally. I also discovered that my Disk Permissions experienced voluminous corruption that could not be repaired if I installed Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 17 as suggested each time I check for software updates.
I need to be able to have a total of about six TBs available in my system for storage and editing of video via Imovie. I don’t know the maximum of HDD storage that can be used in the four internal bays without causing lockup and corruption. If 3.5 TB is about the max, then I would like to have some ability to have external storage via firewire 800 if that would facility fast enough transfer for either video edition and or playback. I don’t know if thunderbolt can be installed via PCI card. I could add a SATA PCI card. However, I assume that would cause the same problem as experienced with 8 TBs installed internally in the four bays.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Yes, I've got a total of to TB and I'm running Snow Leopard. If your hardware checks out, that pretty much makes it a software problem,,, reinstall the OS?
Does the High Point Technologies SATA3 PCIe connect to eternal drive enclosures or does it somehow connect to drives in some of your four internal bays?
Highpoint makes several RocketRAID 2700 series SATA3 controllers for Mac with external mini-SAS connectors, probably the cleanest/least expensive external hook-up. They also offer a combo internal/external board that (for marketing reasons) is listed as not working for internals with Mac Pro. I believe that this is due to pressure from Apple (who apparently does some business with High Point Tech) but to the best of my knowledge it will. Technically, the "not supported" statement is true since all the internal bays are tied to the motherboard SATA 2 controller, but this can be remedied with a special cable. HOWEVER... the boards are not bootable, so your system disk needs to be on the motherboard controller.
In truth, I bought one of their 8-port "internal only" boards designated for PC only and flashed it so the Mac Pro sees it as a 2722 board, so I have 8 internal ports. I'm not recommending you do the same unless you're pretty geeky, but the 2721 would give you half-and-half or the 2722 would give you 8 external with no mods to the board.

Can't retrieve iMovie project saved to DVD for storage and editing.

When I save my iMovie project to DVD for storage and possible future editing, I cannot retrieve it from the DVD. I get the message, "The project could not be opened, bacuase the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permissions are incorrect..." How do I remedy that?

the folder is locked
iMovie projects won't work with locked volumes (such as a DVD!). So you must first copy the project to the HD.

Capure HD in iMovie HD and edit in FCP 6 and render in ProRes workflow

I would like to capture in iMovie HD 6 and edit in FCP 6. This workflow is much faster for me for this king of project.

The question that is lingering in my mind is "why add iMovie to your workflow to begin with?"
The capture HDV in FCP and render in ProRes workflow seems a bit more streamlined. I'm not entirely sure about this, but you may be able to capture in FCP as AIC, but I don't have any HDV equipment around that I can test this out with. I thought I read about this somewhere, but can't remember exactly where and when.

I've got AVCHD into iMovie '09 and edited it, now how do I see it on the TV

OK, so I got the AVCHD off my new Canon Vixia HFS100 (no problem there) and have successfully edited the video, adding titles, etc. Now what? Can't export it back to the camcorder and view it. Tried loading this ENORMOUS file (70Gb for 11 minutes) to my iBook and playing it via cables to the TV but it was very choppy and not very good quality. Tried burning it to DVD but the downcoding was so steep that the quality was awful. I've heard that apple TV might permit streaming of high def video. I've heard that I can burn AVCHD directly to DVD as a AVCHD file which is viewable on certain bluray players. Any other ideas? I know I can hook the camcorder directly up to the really sweet Sony highdef TV, but what about the stupid scenes that you want to edit out before you view the images. Hard to believe that there isn't a means to take, edit, and view HD video by now.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either. It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected. VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB. All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC. Is that the same? Thank you for your time and response.

Storage and memory problems on a new mac. PLEASE HELP

I had a macbook pro 5 years ago and backed everything up to my time machine. i just bought a new mac book pro yesterday. I only wanted to transfer my music and photo files over, and i somehow managed to do that but i think i made a mistake somewhere because now my storage memory is listed at over 400 gb used which i know is impossible. ive saved one document onmy new computer and the entire storage on the time machine is only 173 gb. I have over 300 gb listed as other on the new computer- at one point it was purple and categorized as backup but now it says other- can anyone help me?
my computer is running super slow now because of it and i just spent over 2000 dollars on this yesterday and I cant find anything in apple support to help me. i already tried looking through all the files and used the omni disk sweeper.

Balanced Scorecard web presentation and editing problems

Hi all,
I am working with BSC on SEM-BW 6.0 - when I access the web presentation/editing transactions (UMB_LAUNCHPAD_WEB and UMB_CUST_WEB) I can not see any graphics like cause-and-effect chain and other graphic stuff. Since the cause-and-effect chain can be only modeled on the web with this version, this is a real problem. I know this is due to the right or wrong Java Runtime Environment. Can anybody help me on this? Which JRE version do I need installed on my PC to have the graphics work?

What you need from your old Mac is a file titled Domain.sites2 which will be located in the your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder where the home folder is the one with this icon:
Find that file and move/copy it to the same folder on your new Mac. If there is none go to the Application Support folder and create an "iWeb" folder.
If you do not have that domain file you will have to start over from scratch and rebuild your site. iWeb cannot import published html files. However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.
To publish to a 3rd party FTP client I suggest you publish your site first to a folder on your hard drive and then use the free FTP client Cyberduck to upload the site folder and its index.html file to the server.

HD storage and editing

Recently I've made the switch to DSLR video and would like to get some suggestions about possible storage/editing solutions. I was thinking to get a drive or drives that equal 2-3TB. I want enough speed that HD1080 will not be hindered or sluggish. Internal drives would be good but external are not out of the question. Some people say RAID is the way to go while others think ESATA. What I'd like to know is what you've had success with.

CalDigit's HDElement is a fantastic value in ripping fast miniSAS external RAID. This unit comes with CalDigit's PCIe card so you would need to be using a Mac Pro to facilitate that. The usual workflow to HDSLR (for example Canon's line such as the 5DmkII, 7D, T2i, etc) is to use the EOS E1 plug-in provides a very streamlined way to convert the files you bring in to Apple ProRes, and you can choose the quality, so if you are going ProRes422 the files are large and a powerful external RAID is ideal, especially one that is using SAS technology.
If you are using a laptop, an external RAID is still the best way to go when cutting full HD files, but the CalDigit HDElement won't be an option. You can use Firewire 800, or if you have a Macbook Pro with a slot 34 Express (eSATA) then that would be even better. CalDigit and G|Technology make small external RAID units. A RAID employes at least two hard drives and data is written across both drives, and this method enables faster speeds; RAIDs that use four drives are able to write and read even faster, so that is why people recommend RAID drives for HD video. But RAID drive also provide an option where your data is backed up in the event of a drive failure, and depending on the way you choose to have the data written (and how many drives make up your RAID) you can have various levels of redundant security.
So recap: The method of communication affects the speed of storage, as well as how many drives are used in your storage system. Also, software RAIDs borrow system resources, slowing down your system, and hardware RAIDs like the HDElement handle all of the processing leaving your system to handle everything else like effects, and other calculations.

Imovie text and picture problem

I have this movie clip and on that clip I made the text effect focus, so the movie clips gets unclear. (all that its working fine)
BUT.. then I would also like to have a picture next to the text, but now this picture get also unclear, but I want it clear as the text.
Any ideas?

No problem at all (well, perhaps a tiny one).
The x'es only the rectangles are created with the Rectangle Frame Tool, rather than with the Rectangle Tool -- or, for that matter, with the Text tool. TheX will disappear as soon as you click inside it with the text tool. They are to indicate two different basic objects, and may get a different default Object Style applied.
The usual way to draw a frame designated to receive text is dragging one out with the Text tool.
The dotted lines may be a problem -- that indicates the frames are created on a master page, rather than on the page you are working on. You cannot click-and-type in a frame that resides on a master page; you have to 'release' it first (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + Double Click, with the black arrow). There are arguments for and against defining actual text frames on master pages; you'll have to decide for yourself what to use.

Editable ALV - Particular Lines Display and Edit Problem

I have developed a program which updates the Custom tables in the database.
I am using cl_gui_alv_grid in the module pool program. I am making all the fields editable using ls_fcat-edit = 'X'.
But as per my requirement in the change mode of the same data base entry, the user should not be able to change the existing data (like PO line items).
My requirement is for a particular Purchase Order if there are line items, when I open the Purchase Order in the change mode all the existing line items should be in display mode and I need to provide the user to add more lines.
Say the PO has 3 line items, in the Grid, it should be like all the existing 3 line items should be in display mode and rest of the lines should be in editable mode which will give the option for the user to add more line items for the same PO.
Here it is not Purchase Order, I just compared as an example.
Logic I am using.
I am building the internal table with a serial numbers from 1-99 and this particular column will be in display mode in the ALV Grid. Using the class cl_gui_alv_grid.
Capturing all the data entered using event handler with method handle_data_changed.
Please tell me how do I set the particular lines in display mode and others in editable mode within the same internal table.

1080 50i disadvantages and editing problems?

I am about to buy cosumer camera Sony HDR CX350ve. It records in AVCHD 1080 50i footage. I am in big doubt because of this interlaced scaning and all of discussions about film-like or no film like look. What it is all about?
How Premiere CS4 deals with 50i during editing? When i will see artifacts? What is the best way to convert to progressive scanining?
What i will see on 1080p LCD? Is this interlaced scaning really worse than progressive?
I really like this camera but I don't want to regret buying it while editing footage. Please help.

Nothing worth mentioning. But let's be practical, many users only edit and export interlaced material, you have no way to export to 25P on BRD or DVD, PC players like VLC or MPC automatically correct interlaced material for display on a progressive monitor, just as flatscreen TV's do.
Jeff's tutorial is great in NTSC land, but not in PAL land to introduce that "Filmic / Stuttering" look. The software solution is the best approach in NTSC land to create the stutter, not here. IMO even a software solution is only a band-aid, and does interpolate between fields to create a frame which will always entail mathematical inaccuracies and errors. If the information is not there, you can't create the information in post. So it will by definition look softer than the original. Converting i material to P will work reasonably nice on static shots, but not on fast moving shots or fast pans.

IMovie 09 editing problems found/questions

Hello,
I'm a new user of imovie 9 and I'm experiencing several problems when compiling and editing my first video. Is anyone else experiencing this? My project is currently about an hour in length, compiled from about 14 hours of raw footage. The goal is to edit it down to 15-20 mins, but the following experiences are really hindering this!
1. Sometimes dragging clips from the event library to the project inserts two copies of the same clip in the project.
2. Sometimes when dragging a clip from the event library to the project, the clip is inserted, but not where the insertion point it - often it is several clips away.
3. Sometimes when dragging the clip within a project to a new location (ie to attempt to fix point 2) the wrong clip is moved, or it is moved, then a second later moves back!
4. When inserting text, sometimes the text is inserted outside the bounding box - this is often triggered when changing font sizes. Workaround is to delete the text object and reinsert a new one and try again.
5. (not sure if this is a bug or a misunderstanding of imovie details) When editing transitions (is cross fade) times, often another time is used - example I set 2:30 cross-fade and it uses something longer than this.
6. When selecting the clip trimmer for a project clip, the relevant clip is highlighted in the event panel, but the highlighted clip is not automatically scrolled to on the event panel. So I have to hunt through the event to find the relevant clip. Expectation is that it would scroll to the clip point automatically.
Anyone ideas to resolve these (besides wait for updates)?

I'm having the same problems with your #6. When I add an audio clip, I get the option to choose clip trimmer. But when I select it, I either don't get the clip trimmer window or I get it with a blank space. It doesn't give me the audio to trim.

I'm editing a video in imovie '08 and adding iphotos to the movie, but some of the photos are not showing. Help

I'm editing the video of a presentation one of my clients has delivered, I'm adding the slides of the presentation in as photos from iphoto, the problem is that some of the photos are now showing up in the video even though they have been added. Also where photo number 7 should be it is showing photo number 12? I really need to sort this out and need help. How do I get the photos to show and show properly in the right place?

I've got a list of things to look at and tryout to see if we can narrow down what's happening. Try any one in any particular order see if the problem keeps happening.
1. What format are the original photos in?
Are the all the same?
If they are different, do some work and others do not?
File formats that are “raw” may be a problem.
File size may also be a problem if they are very large files.
2. Duplicate the project in the Project Library
Try dragging a photo into that copy of the project
Any differences? If you can import photos into the Duplicate, try copying then pasting into the original and see if the image shows up.
3. Duplicate a picture inside of iPhoto
If you want to have a particular picture and can find it within iPhoto try making a duplicate.
Does it show up in the Photo browser? And can you drag that duplicated picture into the project? What do you see, what result do you get?
4. Clean the iMovie cache
Quit out of iMovie. Then go to your Movies Folder > iMovie Events > Project folder name
Drag the folder "iMovie Thumbnails" to your trash. Then open the folder "iMovie Cache" and drag the file "Cache.plist" to the trash.
This should regenerate any cached thumbnails for the project, may be helpful.
5. Try tossing out the iMovie preferences
Quit iMovie.
Open a Finder window to your user's Home folder>Library >Preferences folder. Find the file named "com.apple.iMovie.plist" or "com.apple.iMovieAppl.plist" and move it to the trash.
Try opening iMovie again, then opening the project and dragging a photo from the Photo Browser into the Project timeline.
