IMovie supported files?

What's supported? I had an .wmv file that I tried to import into iPhoto, but it wasn't there. Same goes with my .mts and .m2ts files. They've gone missing. Luckily I have them backed up on an external HD.
iMovie found all my movie files in the iPhoto library except those that were .wmv, .mts., and .mt2s. Should I just assume these are not supported, and I should convert these files to some kind of .mp4 format?
Thanks,
~Sam

For wmv files, you need to convert them using Flip4Mac. The free version of Flip4Mac will let you view them in QuickTime. One of the paid versions of Flip4MAC will let you convert them using a free tool like MPEG Streamclip. http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
For .mts and .m2ts files, iMovie needs them to be in the initial folder structure as they were in the camera. iMovie will easily import these directly from the camera or from the SD card in a card reader. However, if you have puttled the mts files out of context from their initial folder structure you will need a converter. I would suggest you take a look at ClipWrap and VoltaicHD. These two are popular and work well. There may be free tools out there, but they require some technical knowledge on your part to install them and use them.
When you convert the files for use in iMovie, I suggest that you convert to Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • Does imovie support the GoPro Hero 2 camera?

Any problems uploading GoPro Hero 2 MPEG4 files into a Macbook Pro?

I am having huge problems with importing from my Hero 2 HD into iMovie 10.0.1.  It looks like the files import but then when I come back to iMovie I have a Missing Camera error over each file.  I find it hard to believe that Apple would not support the Hero 2.  I looked in the iMovie support area and searched for what GoPro iMovie does support and only the Hero 3 is listed.  Anyone else having trouble importing video or timelapse pictures from your Hero 2 or Hero 2 HD?  Very frustrating.  Fortunately, I did find that even after upgrading to Maverick, iMovie 9.0 is still in my applications folder under the iMovie folder.

  • Does iMovie support 4K video editing and export?

Does the latest version of iMovie support 4K video export? I have seen that it supports XAVC-S from Sony, but I do not know if 4K XAVC-S is supported too.
    Thank you for answer.
P.S.: If not, would it be able to in near future?

    Hi Tomas J
the problem is that if you have nothing but 4k XAVC clips in the card and you try to import from the Import window
FCPX will not see the card as a Camera and only as a Volume. You cannot do Camera archives from a volume but you are able to do Camera Archives if it is detected by FCPX as a Camera.  The reason I like to do Camera Archives is that that way I transfer the whole content of the SD card in one pass to a container that I can transfer to any HD that is hooked up or connected to the computer usually avoiding the main or boot drive and I can bring that container or Archive into the Favorites column of the import window pf FCPX ,opened and start importing from there. This has two main advantages 1 Once I create the archive and have all my clips in its container I can wipe the card clean and start using it again, 2 If I placed it in the Favorites colum of the import window I can open it and start importing to FCPX as if it was any card, Also you can move this container or archive any where as long as it is connected to your computer and if you have finished and don't plan to use it anymore you can store it for keeps with all the original files you shot in any storage for keeps. You also preserve the file structure of the SD card  That is why I need FCPX to recognize the SD card as a CAMERA AND NOT AS A VOLUME when using 4K XAVC-S clips.  The way you are doing it may be ok up to a point only for a few clips here and there but if you're preserving or making a Movie of you vacation or other events that would be an Immense task.
The Sony AX-100 camera that you have has the same file structure that the AX-33 if you import nothing but 4K XAVC-S clips without mixing mp4 or AVCHD ON THE SAME CARD Have you found the same problem????

  • Cannot open an iMovie project file

I can no longer open an iMovie project file from my external hard drive. Other iMovie projects on the hard drive can be opened, but not my main project. I've transfered it back to my MacBook Pro and then tried importing it into a new project, but I get an error -43 message about Quicktime not able to 'parse' the file. I have also tried Lennart Thelander's "File Fixer" but this still does not open the file. File icon and file size (39.02GB) seem to be the same as when the file could be opened. Is there a way to recover this file?
    Merci

iMovie doesn't support importing one iMovie project to another. When we try, we get exactly the error you quoted.
You can, however, import all the Timeline video and audio as a single clip to a new project. Or you can drag files from the Media folder of the project to the Timeline of a NEW project.
In the Finder, Control-click on the project icon and choose Show Package Contents from the popUp menu. You'll see the movie "Timeline Movie.mov" in the window that opens. You want to import that movie to a new project, or import selected files in the Media folder.
To import, drag the file to the Timeline of a NEW iMovie project. If importing the Timeline Movie, everything on the Timeline of the original project will arrive as a single clip in the new project.
If the project failed on the external drive, it may be because the disk does not use the disk format required by iMovie. Use Disk Utility to check the disk format, which must be "Mac OS Extended". If it's not that format, use Disk Utility to reformat the drive. (Which will erase all the files on the drive, so make backups.)

  • Is there a way to open and edit my iMovie HD files with iMovie '09 and later versions?

I am getting ready to update an older iMac from Tiger to Mountain Lion. (Long overdue, I know) I have several files that I created using iMovie HD. After I update, will the new versions of iMovie be able to open and edit my iMovie HD files?

I don't think that iMovie 11 is backwards compatible with iMovie HD 6.
If you still have the install disks for iMovie Hd 6 (iLife 6) you can keep it alongside the newer version:
Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iMovie 11 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks. Update it to iMovie 6.0.3.
Now re-install iMovie 11. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
    Then reinstall iMovie 11.
iMovie 6 works great with iDVD 7.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.
Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:
Open a terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife011.plist"
    (No quotes)
Install iMovieHD6 from the iLife 6 install disk.
This works with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.

  • Is there any way to open an iMovie HD file with iMovie 4?

Subject said it all. My daughter did her iMovie homework on our home computer. When she took the iMovie HD file to school it wouldn't open with their older version of iMovie.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Hi Lanny
install iM04 on your home computer :-/ (you can run both apps on one machine, but I recommend to install a second account for your daughter…)
because iM05 has a totally different system to handle the clips ("non-distructive editing") plus a different file-system (.pkg instead of files+folders) there's no way from 5>>4
(except, you export the project as a .dv and import that into the other app… but you loose the whole projects info as clips, transitions etc,)
no, 5+5, 4+4, or 4+5… you can import iM4 projects into iM5… once, single shot only
besides: great, your kids do such projects!! over here in Germany, we still use chalk and blackboards…

  • Persistent Installation Error (support files)

I cannot install Snow Leopard. I have researched and tried a lot of different methods. I have gone through the installation over ten times, and nothing works. This is ridiculous. The same disc worked on the same machine a month ago. Snow Leopard was running on the same MacBook, without any problems during the first installation, and now it fails repeatedly. Here's what happened:
I got the "invalid node structure" error and had to erase and zero-out the internal disk. Disk Utility later verified that the disk was fixed, and no further errors were reported. I also used DiskWarrior to verify this, and it also reported no further errors.
I proceeded to install Snow Leopard, but at the "15 minutes remaining" waypoint it stalled with the "Installer could not copy the necessary support files" error message. I repartitioned the drive, ensuring it was Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) with the GUID Partition Table. I got the same error.
I used Disk Utility to verify the installation disc, and it checked out with no errors. The surface is clean with no scratches. This is the same disc I used a month ago, which installed without error, so it's not the disc.
I thought maybe the optical drive was having trouble reading the disc. I got another machine and used Target Disk Mode to install it remotely, but it stalled with the same error at the same waypoint.
I read that RAM could be causing issues. There are 2 DIMMS, so each was removed under two separate installation attempts. The same error.
I used a USB external drive and had Disk Utility make a bootable partition. I then copied the Snow Leopard installation DVD to the partition, and used the USB drive to boot and start the installation. It stalled with the same error at the same waypoint.
I used a Windows Vista installation disc to repartition the hard disk, curious if it would discover errors. I formatted everything to unallocated space. I then used Disk Utility to repartition and zero-out the disk once more, ensuring the Journaled and GUID scheme once more.
It's not the disc. It's not the internal hard disk. It's not the optical drive. It's not the RAM. It's not the USB drive. There are no peripherals connected. They all return the same error at the same point during installation.
I can install Leopard fine. This post is being written on the same machine under Leopard. So there isn't some disk error that the repair utilities aren't reporting. Everything is running smoothly.
I have tried to install Leopard, then upgrade to Snow Leopard, but it stalls and won't finish either. I have tried this route twice, but each time it will stall at the "one minute remaining" waypoint. If I force restart and resume the installation it gives the "support files" error again.
So at this point I have exhausted all the installation methods that I'm aware of. This is so frustrating. I want to figure out why the installation fails. Does anyone know of any other methods? I refuse to accept this cannot work for simply no reason, there has got to be something else wrong. Does anyone have advise?

I have tried to install Leopard, then upgrade to Snow Leopard, but it stalls and won't finish either. I have tried this route twice, but each time it will stall at the "one minute remaining" waypoint.
How long are you letting it go at that point? I just upgraded an old PowerPC machine from Tiger to Leopard here yesterday. Amusingly, the installer jumped from over 3 hours to 11 minutes within a ten minute period. That last 11 minutes took about an hour, with most of that time spent at "one minute remaining." I've never seen such a long minute in my life! But, I just let it go until it finally finished, which it did. I've seen similar behavior in other Apple installers/updaters and would not be surprised to see it in the SL installer.
As to the error message you keep getting, that seems at odds with your assumption that all involved drives/disks are fine. There have been some bad SL disks reported, but since you've installed SL from this disk before, I'd say that's not the problem. That leaves your machine. Somehow, I think that you've got a hardware problem that has cropped up since the last time you installed from this disk on this machine. The fact that the disk checks out with Disk Utility and DiskWarrior may simply mean that the drive is in the early stages of failing. Or it might be some other hardware. Do you have an Apple Store nearby?
I don't think that R C-R's idea about phoning home is correct, as I installed SL while booted from the SL disk. I could be wrong, but I think you would have to manually connect to a wireless network while booted from the install disk, and I did no such thing, which means I was not connected to a network at all when I installed SL. This is not to say that SL doesn't phone home, only that it shouldn't cause a failure if the connection can't be established.

What's the name of the file you are attempting to open?  Is it "ScreenFlow_4.5.2.dmg"?  If it is the correct name then the message is correct and you are attempting to open a file with DMG files extension and not one with a PDF file extension.  Adobe Reader opens PDF files an not any other file type.
