Imovie templates, titles, ken burns effect wont render. why?

Hi I am having great issues.
Once my templates or ken burns effected pictures are in a timeline they wont render. Ive tried everything, but no rendering takes place. Just sits there and does nothing.
Ive even tried wiping imovie and reinstalling still does the same thing help!!!

Hi gregles76 - welcome to the forum!
Two possible angles on this:
1. You are not applying the KB effect correctly - make sure you are following the procedure shown in this tutorial:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/imovie/im3-2.html
2. Were you trying to change the setting on photos that already have a KB effect applied? If you were, and you have emptied the iMovie trash after creating KB effects on your photos, you will not be able to further modify the setting, because of the way iMovie deals with the photos.

  • IMovies problem with Ken Burns effect.

When I use Ken Burns effect in IMovies, the bricks of a house, the line of a shirt, ... are kind of vibrating. In Aperture 3, it is ok. Is that a known problem with IMovies ?

I have seen that in older editions - like iMovie 6 - especially when using pics at a high resolution - the water or sky seemd to shimmer. Funny I'm using iMovie 11 now and some things I liked better in 6, but you bring to mind something that bugged me (though people would ask - "How did you get that to happen?")

Does iMovie HD 6 have the Ken Burns effect for photos? I did not see it listed in the Effects menu. Thanks for the help.

After a little investigation I discovered that the Ken Burns effect is included in iMovie HD6. There is a separate control panel for the effect and it is semi-transparent and can be a little hard to recognize at first.

  • Ken burns effect editing

I read this statemnt on a forum:
*Do you have iMovie? You can create a slideshow in iMovie, and the Ken Burns effect gives you a great deal of control. You can set whether it zooms in or zooms out, and you can control the exact starting point and ending point, as well as how long it takes. It's really great for synchronizing photos with music, as you can make each photo stay on screen as quickly or as slowly as you need.*
But I can't find the way to do it. I get Ken burns effect but I don't know how to edit it (every time the photo chanes I get jerky issues) Can anyone light my way??
    Tnx

    1) Drag a photo into your project from the Media Browser (or you can drag and drop a JPEG directly from a Finder Folder.)
    2) Select the photo so there is a yellow rubber band around it. Select the Fit/Crop/Ken Burns Tool
    3) Use the Green rectangle as a start point. Click to bring the red rectangle forward and set the end point.
    4) Click done
Control the length of the Ken Burns by changing the Duration of the Photo.
An additional thing that may help: iMovie 08 may default to editing in increments of one tenth of one second. In iMovie Preferences, you can change this parameter so that it edits at the frame level (e.g. 30 frames per second for NTSC formats). Once you are editing at the frame level, you will have a great deal more control over "jerky" moments. I never see them, but it is possible that if you are editing at .1 second, some strays occur that you can't see. To change this parameter select iMOVIE/PREFERENCES and make sure there is a check in the top box that says "Display Timecodes". I also check VIEW/PLAYHEAD INFO so that I see the timecodes as I skim.
Once you change this parameter, 1:9 will mean 1 second and 9 frames, not 1 and 9 tenths of a second.
Also, if you see jerky movement while editing, but it looks OK when rendered - that is a sign of an underpowered processor or too little memory (not likely in your case).

  • IMovie 6.0.3 won't render Ken burns effects or Themes

I'm working in iMovie 6.0.3. Whenever I try to apply a Ken Burns effect or a theme, the red "render" bar completes, but then I just end up with a frames of empty black the same length as whatever I had tried to put there.
I tried deleting the com.apple.imovie file in the Preferences.
I used the disk utility to restore permissions.
    I emptied my caches.
    I've restarted my computer.
Do anyone have any suggestions of what I could try?
    Thanks!

Just saw this June thread - I have iMovie 6.0.4 and am having this exact problem. I can't believe that there aren't more threads about it. This is the first video I've done since upgrading to OS 10.5 and iLife 7 and then importing the old iMovie 6.0.4 for obvious reasons.
I filled the timeline with photos, set them to the music, then previewed Ken Burns Effect and it looks great. But when I tried to update using KBE and all I get is a BLACK clip that acts like a blank in my timeline. If I apply KBE directly to a photo in the photo tray the same thing happens. KBE is completely unavailable to me!
Let's keep this thread going until we find a solution. It's not the version. Thanks!

  • IMovie HD6 Ken Burns Effect Not working

Hi. I've been using iMovie HD6 with my old iMacG4. We used Ken Burns Effect a lot with no problems.
I just got a 1 year old G5 iMAC with Intel Dual Processor and it has the latest versions of Tiger and iMovie 06. Everything works but the Ken Burns Effect. When I use the Ken Burns effect, it shows up when I set it up but when I push the button to make iMovie render the effect, the clinic does not render. It looks like the computer is about to render the effect but nothing happens and I need to force quit iMovie to do anything else. On the set-up of the Ken Burns effect, the preview shows the Ken Burns effect working.
I had a previous version of iLife O6 so I tried deleting the iMovie from the application and reloading the iLife 06 but this did not help. Because I don't have iLife 08, I cannot download a version of iMovie O6 to give this a try.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help, Andy

Since you just got a one year old computer, I would do the following:
    1. Close iMovie and trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new .plist file on relaunch.
    2. Before you relaunch iMovie, do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac.
    3. Make sure that you have sufficient free disk space for iMovie to operate efficiently -- 25GB is recommended.
    4. Update iMovie and Quicktime to current versions, and do a permissions repair afterwards.
    5. If you have any 3rd party plug-ins, or Quicktime plug-ins, move them to another folder to temporarily disable them.
With the Ken Burns effect, do not empty the trash until your project is finished. Emptying the trash will cause you to be unable to edit a photo to which the Ken Burns effect has been applied.
    Hope the above helps.

  • Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Hey Villiam,  Kevin is referring to setting a movement on a photo setting keyframes (like zoom out to in), right-clicking on Motion, and choose save as preset.  This will put that movement into your presets folder under Effects.  I am going to try this on my next montage and see if I can find some efficiencies.  Thanks Kevin, that was a great tip!!!
Also thanks to Jim.  I spent like 30 min looking at all the keyboard shortcuts.  It's a little overwhelming to establish a solid shortcut format that a team of editors can learn and use.  I'm going to be trying the FCP short cuts, then go back to the default.  It looks like the PR default has a lot of existing and helpful shortcuts assigned already.  It's just going to take getting used to a new platform.
I'm still looking for tools and/or methods to allow an editor to assemble a 60 second montage with 10 photos, VO and music in 30 minutes.  It's going to be a challenge but I think it's possible with the right innovative process.  I'll still challenge anyone to find a way to quickly assemble a montage in an assembly line or template-based fashion using Adobe Premiere CC where there's on-screen text, advanced transitions, timed to VO, etc.
I think I'm dreaming for a tool to automatically do this within Premiere, while I think the answer for now might just be customizing motion presets and creating a favorites folder of transitions that can be dragged onto each clip.  I'll see if there’s a way to apply a set of transitions or motion presets to a series of photos on the timeline opposed to doing it one by one.  I can see this solution being important as video montages are becoming more popular in our industry, and the faster we can make them using a professional software package like Premiere the more prosperous we will be.

  • IMovie Crashing when importing photo with Ken Burns Effect

iMovie is crashing all the time when I am trying to import a photo with Ken burns effect using media browser and hitting "apply". Is this a known problem ? If I dont apply Ken Buruns effect then it imports it fine.
I am trying to put Photo at the begining of my project ( and then put title on that photo). If I have any clip in the begining and then try importing photo with ken burn's effect then it is not crashing, but it still does not import it. I click "apply" and it does soemthing , I can see the clip in timeline for a sec and then it disappears. So either way, cant use any photos anywhere with Ken Burn's effect. Whats going on?
I have more than enough space available on my HDD and I do not think there is any conflicting QT plugins I have ( It's all default Install). This is so consistent that it seems like a Bug but can't find this exact case mentioned anywhere in discussions.
    Powerbook G4 12.1" 1.5Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Welcome to the forum! And thanks for such an insightful post.
    I have two guesses here:
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with partitions
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with access rights
I've never seen a Ken Burns problem with partitions (I've used multiple partitions for years with no problems). I suspect that's not the cause.
But I think you've hit the nail on the head that iMovie may have a problem with permissions/access rights. I don't know exactly what the problem is — or whether it's caused by iMovie or OSX — but there is behavior that suggests something isn't right.
I suspect the issue, whatever it is, causes a failure to save the rendered Ken Burns clip inside the project package. The red bar runs, but the rendered clip isn't saved to disk. My guess is OSX refuses to allow iMovie to save the file for OSX doesn't believe YOU have permission.
One would think that using the Finder to set the permissions of the project package would solve the problem, but it doesn't seem to.
    There are two possible solutions:
    1. Set the partition to ignore permissions. In the Finder, click on the partition and Get Info. Turn ON the checkbox "Ignore permissions on this volume";
    2. Use Disk Utility to reformat (erase) the partition. Somehow that seems to fix the problem.
Here's some history which may suggest another solution: In an earlier version of iMovie a similar problem occurred, where iMovie would refuse to open a project. It had somehow decided you didn't have permission to edit the project.
The only solution was to use the Finder to create a new set of project folders — a folder and all the folders it normally contains — then Option-drag the FILES of the original project folder to the appropriate folders. (Option-dragging COPIED the files instead of moving them.) The new project folder would now open normally.
If you are adept at working with packages, you might try creating your own package (which contains all the normal folders) then Option-drag the files of the problem project to your package.
Once I saw an error -52 announcement, but it was not reproducible.
Error -52 is a "Get file position error", which (may) suggest a disk directory error. That may be a disk issue unrelated to iMovie. You might want to consider using Disk Utility to Verify/Repair that partition.
I have a separate partition for the movies and made a
link from my home account to the directory with the
movies on that partition. iMovie works correctly
except for the Ken Burns photo rendering.
I'm never sure whether creating such a link is a good idea or not, especially for the iLife apps. Some apps don't resolve the alias as they should, which creates other problems. A "Movies" alias sends iDVD a million miles beyond Jupiter, for example, where the iDVD project joins the space dust.
For iMovie projects saved on partitions and external drives, I just save them inside a "iMovie 6 Projects" folder on that drive. (Every new version of iMovie gets a new folder.) For convenience, I may create aliases to help navigate there, but do nothing else. Everything just works.
If you figure out something new, please say.

  • How can I turn off the ken burns effect on iMovie? If I crop the picture it still persists!

  • Ken Burns Effects Don't Work in iMovie HD (I've Tried Everything)

    Version:
    OS X 10.4.10
    iMovie 6
    *Hardware 1:*
PowerMac G4 Dual 500 Mhz, 1GB RAM, Internal 40GB HDD and Internal 320 GB HDD
    *Hardware 2:*
PowerBook G4 500 Mhz, 512MB RAM, Internal 20 GB HDD
    Problem:
This problem occurs on both of my G4 Macs. In iMovie HD, I imported a JPEG from iPhoto with Ken Burns Effects on. The still photo appeared properly in the Clip Viewer initially, but appeared as a black screen in the iMovie Monitor. Once the imported photo with the Ken Burns Effects completed rendering, the clip in the Clip Viewer turned white and appeared as a white screen in the iMovie Monitor. I have tried almost everything I read about in these forums in search of a resolution.
    *Resolutions that Failed:*
    1. The photo is definitely a .jpg
    2. Tried importing the actual .jpg file as well as importing from iPhoto.
    3. QuickTime and all other Software updates have been applied and are running on the most current release.
    4. Repaired disk permissions.
    5. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my main internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
    6. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my secondary internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
    7. Deleted the 'mac.imovie.plist' file and created a new one.
    8. Attempted to do apply the effects logged on as a different user.
    9. Saved file, restarted machine and reopened numerous times but the problem persists.
    10. Tried a lower resolution photo and the problem persists.
    11. Attempted to import all the photos I planned to use, added transitions to all of the clips and rendered completely. Saved the file, restarted the machine and reopened the file with no change to the blank clips.
    12. The iMovie trash emptying issue did nothing to help.
    *Additional Notes:*
    1. The problem is confined to the Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. I am able to work with true video clips without incident.
    2. Ken Burns Effects operate properly in iPhoto 6 using the slideshow functionality.
    3. I would use iPhoto, but it seems like it would be easier to line up specific sections of an audio track with certain Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. (i.e. – a crescendo at the 16 second mark of the audio track coincides with the end of a 'zoom' on a photo, transition from second 16-17 second mark, new photo at the 17 second mark and pan left to right from 17 second mark to the 25 second mark.) Point is that it lines up precisely with the markers on the audio track, which seems far easier to do in iMovie than iPhoto.
    4. Please help me, I'm going nuts troubleshooting this bug! I can't find any resolution that works.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hmmm. You seem to have tried, without success, most if not all of the methods of resolving a Ken Burns black screen issue.
Some thoughts that have occurred to me:
    1. Perhaps your G4 500mhz Mac is not fast enough. I think that the minimum spec for iLife '06 is 733mhz. Might have nothing to do with this problem, but I just mention it.
    2. Are the sizes of your images too large, as can happen with some of these new high def cameras? iMovie has trouble working with very large images.
    3. Do you have any 3rd pary plug-ins, particularly in Quick Time, that could be causing a conflict?
    4. Do you have enough disk space for the project to operate?
    5. Have you done a recent Quick Time update? Some users have reported a problem with that.
    6. From your post, it appears that you have continuously worked within the same iMovie file that exhibits the Ken Burns problem. If this is true, try creating a new iMovie project and experimenting with a few clips to see if the problem persists in the new project.
Ken Burns issues can be very frustrating. I think that you will need to keep trying things until something works. Wish I could be more help, but perhaps some of the tech experts on this forum will have some workable suggestions.
There is an application called Photo to Movie that reputedly has a far better Ken Burns type of effect. If you can't resolve your problem, you might try downloading that app. I believe that it offers a demo download.
    Good luck.

  • How to turn off ken burns effect in new imovie

The new iMovie---11--  how in the heck do I turn off the Ken Burns effect? Nothing against Mr Burns but.... I don't want everything to move!
    Thanks!

Go to File/Project Properties and you can define the default behavior for adding stills to your project.
After clicking File/Project Properties, you will click on the Timing Tab. There you will see how to set the default still photo duration and the initial photo placement.
You an set it as Ken Burns, Fit, or Crop. You can always change it later in the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tools, but if you are importing a lot, it makes sense to set the default as the one you are most likely to need.

  • Remove ken burns effect from photos in iMovie HD

I am trying to burn iphotos slideshows to DVD like I used to do before newer versions stopped supporting iDVD. I was advised on this board to use iMovie HD and it seems to be working and I am pleased with the integration with iDVD.  But when I used the ken burns effect on some of my slides I got a shimmering effect. So I tried to get rid of it. In iMovie HD, you are supposed to slect the media tab and click on "show Photo settings" This gives you a window where you can adjust the Kne Burns setting or uncheck the box. When I uncheck the box, nothing happens. Whther I press "update" or not, the effect is still there. This is a 1000-slide project. I hope I don't have to start over.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the response, butt.. this is iMovieHD (or version 6). There is no crop or fit tool in this version (as far as I can tell). There is a "crop" choice in the Edit pulldown menu, but I think that's for clips. And this verison doesn't give you boxes for the Ken Burns effect. These things are in later versions of iMOvie, but those versions don't integrate as well with iDVD which is most important to me.

  • Ken Burns effect same in all iMovie 3.slideshow photos

I am working on a slideshow using iMovie 3.0.3. I am using iMovie because I have more than 99 photos, and would like the slideshow divided into chapters for iDVD viewing and navigation, and because I would like to add specific music to each individual chapter or slideshow, but have them play contiguously.
I have created separate albums in iPhoto for each chapter of my slideshow in iMovie. When I import all photos in an album from iPhoto with the Ken Burns effect box turned on and click Apply, each photo is imported, but the panning and zooming is the same on each photo, unlike when playing an iPhoto slideshow where the panning and zooming is automatically randomly applied to the photos in the slideshow. Am I doing something wrong and is there any way to correct this problem without manually setting the pan and zoom of each photo individually? Would a newer version of iMovie correct the problem?
    Thanks,
    Jennifer
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hello Jennifer,
the behaviour of iMovie is quite normal as you will have to create a different setting for each picture in order to have a different effect upon import. up to version 5 (iMovie HD) this remains the same - and i'm quite sure also for iM 6, but haven't upgraded yet.
you have another possibility though: export your slideshow with random KB effects from iPhoto as QT movie and then import to iMovie
    hope this helps

  • Themes / Ken Burns effects don't render, Transitions and Video FX do render

Topic pretty much says it all. I'm working on some family vacation videos, and thought it might be nice to apply some travel themes to some sections of the video.
The red "rendering" bar that's supposed to crawl along the bottom as it's rendering, and then disappear when done, is dark red, and never fills with the bright red indicating that it's actually rendering the clip.
iMovie's at the latest version (6.0.3), and I've tried this with a number of projects, with no luck. Transitions and video effects work like a peach, so it's just something with themes and the ken burns effect on pictures.
I've deleted the imovie.plist, and repaired permissions.
I should also note, the preview, when dropping clips onto the drop zone(s), display's properly. As does the ken burns effect when setting up it's duration. It's when you apply the settings, and it drops the clip onto the timeline to start rendering it, that's where we hit a snag.
This is on the internal drive, Mac Extended (Journaled) format, there's about 40GB free space. I've emptied both the system, and iMovie trash. I've tried deleting the FontCollections folder.
I'm just rambling off suggestions I've tried from the various threads I've been gleaning in hopes of finding a solution to this.
When I started these projects, I chose DV Widescreen, as everything I film with my DV camcorder (Panasonic PVGS59) is set to widescreen.
I've even tried manually splitting the clips, so that the part(s) I want "themed" are only as long as the theme duration, hoping maybe it was choking on a longer clip (say around 1 to 2 minutes), when all it needed for the theme was about 4-10 seconds. Exact same thing, dark red "rendering" bar, but no bright red bar showing how the rendering is progressing.
I've dug through about 32 pages so far, still going and not finding anything that's actually helping. It seems though my issue is quite similar to others', it's unique as nothing that's worked for others is working for me.

Hi, Nice to be here, despite the problems!
Last night I reinstalled iMovie from the recovery disk and even manually deleted all plugins and prefs beforehand. It didn't make any difference in either my account or a new user account I set up. I repaired all the disk permissions again and also once again deleted the iMovie plist, all to no avail.
I had a software update flagged on Monday night (which I downloaded), the problem has only been since then. The other software flagged for download included a battery update and a SuerpDrive firmware update. The SuperDrive update seems to fail to operate. It would try to run it on startup but would advise that the program could find a device to update? Strange. I deleted the .pkg and also the program from nmy startup items.
So, with the version of iMovie rolled back to the original one off the recovery disk, I would have hoped that it would have started to work, which it hasn't! I subsequently searched for software updates and added a couple, one at a time to see if that would help (restarting every time). That didn't work either!
What on earth is there left to do, despite a full reinstall of Mac OSX?!
I wonder if this is an emerging problem following the latest seemingly recent software update for iMovie?
