IMovie thinks that the external harddisc is a camera
At startup iMovie is telling: "camera xyz detected" and tries to scan it. But xyz is my external USB-harddisc. After e few seconds of scanning iMovie is crashing…
This happens also after the 7.01-update.

I don't think it's the drive (i.e. make or model), but the files and folders on the drive. When you plug a DVD or HDD camcorder into your Mac's USB port, it acts just like an external USB hard disk. You can also take a DVD out of a camcorder and put it into an external DVD burner, and iMovie then thinks the drive is now a camcorder, and starts the import.
So iMovie seems to scan all external drives for certain patterns of folders and files, and if it looks like the typical filesystem that you'd find on a camcorder disk, it offers to import from the drive. Somebody with this problem could do some experimenting with renaming files and folders, to find what in particular triggers the import.

just got Prosoft drive genius 3 software, and it's telling me that the external hard drive that i am using for my time machine back up drive needs to be defragmented. is it wise to do this or should i not??
Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?

I had just put the finishing touches on my 36 minute documentatary when I got an error message that the external 1TB HD I was using to store the project had been ejected improperly (must have shaken a cord). The result is that the project would not load in the edit Projects window. I can see the file in the finder window and it will launch iMovie but the file itself will not load in the projects window.
I have contacted apple support and they tried to do a few things... to no available.
With my limited knowledge of file structures I assume that the header file must be corrupt.
Is there a 3rd party utility that can decompile and fix the file structure so it will load properly. I have deleted my file "last imported photos" thinking that the photos were kept in the album, but now all my photos are gone; How can I recover the deleted photos?
MIf you have emmptied the iPhoto trash then you're going to need a file recovery application like File Salvage

Does anyone else think that the AppleMac group of products are marketed in a greedy way? I have MacBook Pro 10.5.8 with Leopard and am now told that I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard so that my system can download the relevant iTunes upgrade to sync my new iPad and get my audiobooks (which don't appear anywhere on the device right now). Of course there isn't enough memory on the MacBook and Snow Leopard costs more also? I don't have financial resources to pay for all the new memory requirement and related upgrades they say I need just to sync my iPad with my purchases.
Thanks for the reply but I already knew this. $20 for Snow Leopard which asks for 5gb free memory. I can only see that I have 4 gb (which I feel is rather a pathetic amount of available memory for any computer). To upgrade this computer's memory will cost another fee (I haven't researched this yet but gather it's more than $20). Then of course I could also be told that the OSX Mackbook Pro that I have can't be memory upgraded - which means I'm being told to buy a new computer - hence my very frustrated last email. I have been given a lovely iPad 2 as a present and now can't sync at all with anything because of this ongoing upgrade nightmare. How on earth am I going to be able to sync my movies, audiobooks etc to this new device??

Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal???
I've had my Macbook for about 11 months now and i use it every day; its gone though about 420 cycles of charging and using the power, and i noticed the battrey preformance has decreased (as expected). The problem isn't sevear yet but it would comfort me knowing that i could replace the battery in the near future

No only if they think under warranty/AppleCare, but your likely able to pay for a new battery if they have them, which they might not yet since it's such a new machine still.
BTW, I have a Early 2011 17" MBP, 27 months old, charges to 97% and has only 14 cycles. -

Remember any restoring of bookmarks overwrites whatever he current set is, and you may not want to loose them.
Even if up until now you have not made any backups of Desktop bookmarks Firefox will have backed up some of them into sets of daily bookmark backups. Once you have backed up your current set you could look at what it has by restoring those bookmarks, you may find one of those sets is fairly complete.
By the way if you look at the profile files and folders that you should now have on the desktop you should see it contains a bookmarks backup folder, the size of the files within should indicate whether they contain anything.
You need to go into the bookmarks library and try the restore option. Backup each set that you look at if it has anything of use in it, before trying the next set. With look one of those will be a fairly complete set of bookmarks.

I do not use Firefox on mobiles, but before you try anything further you do need to backup the desktop bookmarks and learn what existing backups you have. Unless you master that you are in continual danger of overwriting and loosing bookmarks.

hi, am I right in thinking that the only iPads with a built in GPS are the cellular models not the wifi only ones?
I am looking to purchase an iPad2 and need a built in GPSMini-education:
GPS signals are separate from and completely unrelated to both the Internet and the cellular telephone network. GPS signals come directly from the GPS satellites. They provide signals that allow GPS receivers to calculate latitude and longitude information. Navigation software then takes that latitude/longitude info and converts it to land mass, roads, bridges, highways, buildings, etc.
Most navigation software stores the maps right in the iPad/iPod/iPhone but a disadvantage is that the maps must be periodically updated (perhaps once every two years). The Internet is not required to use the system but it is required to update the maps.
Some navigation software gets the maps from the Internet and requires an Internet connection to function but an advantage is that the maps are always up-to-date.
The WiFi+3G/4G iPad and the iPhone both have a GPS receiver. The WiFi-only iPad and the iPod do not and these devices require an accessory. -
Is anyone having same prob as me? I updated to 8.3 and lost photo stream on my photos - all my settings are set for photostream updating - the blue shirts at the Apple store seem to think that the feature was removed from the phones with the 8.1.3 update but it is not mentioned anywhere on Apple's site

Anyone think that the new update...?
I think that the reason the new update makes my iPhone back up really quickly is because it no longer backsup the music and apps installed.
I went yesterday to get my phone checked out because it was acting up and the "genious" restored it. So i went home and noticed everything was wiped out but didnt mind because i had a backup on my pc. After the restoring it from my back up the music still didnt show up and my apps neither so I had to put them all in manually.
Anyone think differently? Doesnt updating the firmware on previous releases on the phone erases everything, even the music and apps? Then after the new firmware is installed the phone restores from back up? Then i think 2.1 no longer backs up music and apps!I don't think I was clear enough. I have an 8GB original iPhone. It has been updated only twice and both times it was updated on my friends computer. All my the stuff on my iPhone comes from my computer though meaning that my iPhone is never synced to my friends computer. Yet when I updated from 2.0.1 to 2.1 none of my music or apps or anything disappeared it was all there, all though the backup before the firmware update took a lifetime my music and apps showed up afterwards. Now, yesterday my iPhone was restored and was left in it's originall factory settongs and I thought that my back up from the day before would just bring everything back but it didn't. The music and apps were left put and I thinks it's because 2.1 no longer backs up those two things because evrything else showed up. Even pictures and notes showed up but no apps or music.

I understand that you updated your Apple Id and password but now you are being prompted for the old information in iCloud. You are on the right track by changing the Apple ID back to the previous email address temporarily so that you can sign out. You should not need to verify the email address. After you edit the Apple ID back to the old email address and then sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, edit the Apple ID back to the address you would currently like to use. There is no need to change the password again, only the email address, unless you prefer to update the password again.

Change your Apple ID temporarily
If signing out and back in to iMessage or FaceTime didn't help, try these steps:
Change your Apple ID to the Apple ID you used previously. You shouldn't need to verify the email address.
Tap Settings > iCloud. Complete these steps only if the Find My [Device] setting is turned on:
Scroll down and tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out to confirm. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account, then tap Delete to confirm.
Tap Keep on My [Device] or Delete from My [Device]. In either case, your data remains in iCloud and will be updated on your device when you sign in to iCloud again.
Enter the password for your previous Apple ID.
Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
Return to Settings > iCloud and sign in with your new Apple ID.
