Imovie to idvd back to imovie?

Hello. I am using the latest versions of both imovie and idvd. Here is my question.
I have a one hour movie that I have imported and edited in imovie. I sent my imovie project to idvd and than I burned a dvd in idvd. I deleted the original imovie file and idvd file from my harddrive. How do I get the movie from the dvd disc back into imovie? I want to do more editing of my project in imovie.
thanks
Ben

Hi, Ben,
You can extract from your DVD by using some third party extractors, but you may lose quality from your original movie footage. See this discussion: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7d7a6
In the future, you may want to export your iMovie back to your camcorder onto DV tapes so that you have a backup copy that you could reimport for more editing. You will not be able to CHANGE any prior edits--well, not very much.
If there is any possiblity that you will be re-editing, keep your iMovie projects!

  • Is there a way to go move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

This is clearly a newbie question:
I know how to share from Imovie to IDVD and I made my IDVD project, but now I don't know if I still have the IMovie I originally transferred.
Is there a way to move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

First, go back to iMovie and look under both iMovie Events and Projects to see if you still have the movie. Double check by looking in Finder to where you save the movies you create. For instance, if you save to Movies, there should be folders in there for iMovie Events and iMovie Projects. If they are there, you should see them in the lists in iMovie.
If not, I don't think there is a way you can move it directly back to iMovie. Is there a real need to have it in iMovie? Unless you are going to change the movie, there is not a need to keep it there. If, for some reason you want it there, however, you can go thru the process of copying the DVD back to the hard drive using MPEG Streamclip, and exporting it to Quicktime. Then open iMovie, and bring it back into iMovie.

  • Copying iDVD back to computer from DVD

I recently burned iDVD to a DVD because I had hardly any space on my hard drive. Now i've put a new hard drive in my ibook and I'm ready to copy iDVD back to my computer. The problem I am having is that when I try to copy it back, it comes up with an error saying: "The alias "AVCVideoServices" cannot be copied to the destination, perhaps because the destination does not support this type of alias."
Anyone know why this is, or any way to fix the problem?
    Thanks,
    Zeb

OK... I fixed the problem, though it was very time consuming. First I tried copying the iDVD app to my computer, and while it still wouldn't copy, it did leave the iDVD.app, just without any contents. So from there, I opened package contents, and copied everything but the frameworks folder (where the alias was). After that, I copied the frameworks folder, and it left an empty folder. Then I did the same with all folders inside that. Finally, I copied everything in those folders but the aliases. Confusing huh? Well... I got it to work anyhow, and thats all that matters. Sorry for anyone who has this problem (I'm sure not many, if any, do) if my explaination is not very clear.

  • Convert DVDs (make on iDVD) back to DV format for iMovie

I have quite a collection of DVDs of home video all made on iMovie and iDVD.
Not thinking to well, i figured this was the be all and end all solution to managing my home videos. As a result i no longer have the original film from which the video was taken.
The issue now is that i want to reuse some clips from these DVDs. And with the new iMovie, keep all your video in a library (which now makes sense), i would like to convert my DVDs back to a digital format.
I have used handbrake in the past to import the video as mpg4.
This is not ideal. Making DVD = DV to mpg1. Hanbrake from DVD = mpg4. Editing mpg4 in imove *****. reburn to DVD = mpg1. The quality by now is super bad.
Does anybody have a better solution to this issue. Can i import to a DV format ... ?
(PS The tabs in this text editor looks strangely like they are from Windows XP)

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
    Drop2DV (free)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter

  • How do I import an unfinalized iMovie from iDVD back to iMovie so that I can finalize it?

Some more details: I created a few iMovie's and a few of them I never finalized, I just burned to iDVD.  I had to make space off of my computer so I deleted them, but I made backup copies on DVD for myself.  How can I re-import the DVD so that I can finalize and save it once and for all?  Do I need to put the file in iPhoto?  When I try to browse out to a copy of the file on an external harddrive or to the DVD, the project is greyed out and cannot be selected.

All of the data resides in the Domain.sites folder found in
    HD/Users/Your user name/Library/Application Support/iWeb
Copy that file to the other machine and you can edit (assuming you have iWeb installed on it) your pages.
Copy that file back to your other machine (it the exact location) and confirm to "replace" the older version so your file is identical to the "Published" version.

  • How can I import idvd back to imovie?

How do I erase audio on idvd project?  Looking to separate audio from video, and apply new audio. Using 10.6.8 macbook air, Processor 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.   Using imovie 11, 9.0.4, idvd 7.1.2.  Could not import to imovie. I am grateful to all suggestions.

Okay, this can still be done.
A DVD is a highly compressed video format. However, tools do exist to uncompress it and get it into an editable file. I've had to do this myself on a couple of occasions when the only thing people had was a DVD.
The software below is what I use.  It will create a video file that should load into QuickTime 7 or QuickTime Pro, allowing you to eliminate the audio as described by Old Toad above.
I use it with iMovie 06 (and a few times with iMovie 11) and iDVD 11. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".

By the way, I am pretty good with movie editing using iMovie HD 06 and sometimes the newer versions of iMovie.  Old Toad is a much better expert than I regarding video.   He has helped me countless times.   However, others here can help you as well. Unfortunately, the iDVD section is not visited as often as it used to be. Once you have a working video file you might try posting in the iMovie or QuickTime areas as these are visited more often by experts.

  • IDVD back to quiktime

I made a idvd/imovie project some time ago, burned it onto a dvd and then deleted it from my hard drive. Now that I have the video ipod, I want to take the video (and audio) from the DVD project and import it into my ipod but I do not know how to export or copy it from the DVD and get it into quicktime pro. Is it possible??
    Thanks
    DB

How did you do it with Toast 7? I would like to make
a QT copy of medium size (not for the iPod).
Insert the DVD, open Toast and choose the DVD format in the Video window. Click the Media button (upper left) to enter the Media Browser. Choose DVD with the top button that appears. Your DVD appears in the window below. Use the lower button to go down one level to see the Titles on the DVD or 2 levels to see the chapters. Drag the titles or chapters you want to the Video window. Toast then extracts the MPEGs from the DVD and writes them to the Roxio Converted Items folder.
Now select the titles in the Video window and click the export button at the bottom. There you'll see a lot of options for how you want to export and convert the video.
This process also works when a non-encrytped VIDEO_TS folder is placed on the desktop or when a video DVD disc image is mounted.

  • Importing DVD video (burned by iDVD) back to editable format

Is this possible? I burned a DVD of some video footage (so that I don't waste HD space with a large video file)--I cannot seem to import it with iMovieHD for editing or further manipulation.

    Hello acousticbiker,
you'll need to convert the MPEG-2 files contained in your DVD into something that iMovie can work with: DV.
Find some more info in Dan Slagle's Unofficial iMovie FAQ: Using Mpeg (DVD) footage

  • HT2361 iMovie/ iDVD

    Hi, all
How can I import a dvd that I burned in iDVD back into iMovie to edtit (again)?
    thanks

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Idvd is missing and i cannot make dvd's on iMovie anymore

I am very angry because I have devoted 6 months of my time editing a film on iMovie and I cannot burn it to disc because iDvd is not on my new iMac.
Apple should put iDvd back on the Mac or create something new or else filmmakers will not be using their programs to edit their films since there is no way to export them on disc. I'm very very disappointed in iMovie and Apple right now because I have bought myself a Mac FOR THE PURPOSE OF EDITING MOVIES and i will not be able to burn my films on disc to watch on TV.
I will have to move all my filmmaking projects to my Windows laptop even though I just bought a Mac.
I really hope Apple fixes this.

because iDvd is not on my new iMac.
Did you also notice that there's no optical drive on your new iMac with which to burn CDs or DVDs?
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you can obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • How to put movie from disc back into imovie?

Hi, I have just put a disc that I created using iMovie and iDVD back into my G4 using Disc Utility. Seems easy to burn an exact copy, but I would like to get the movie on the disc back into iMovie so I can edit it further and make it part of a new iDVD project. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi, Christine,
Yes, you can do it. See this for some help/suggestions as to what to use and how to do it: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7d7a6
You will lose some quality but it may not be so much to bother you.
You should always save your finished movies back to the camcorder DV tape. That way, you can always reimport that footage into any new iMovie project.
Either way, you will not be able to do the tight editing as you could on the original iMovie, but you can certainly add it to other movies, insert new movies, and delete some portions of your first movie. Remember that the audio you added as separate tracks will now be incorporated into the video and will not appear as separate tracks under the video.
    Hope this is helpful!

  • Imovie to Idvd : DVD on TV flickers and moving imges poor quality

    Hallo,
I did my first IDVD project (yes I am coming from the PC world) which works fine so far. I did the movie in iMovie and selected iDVD as the output. iDVD created a DVD which looks fine. But showing the DVD in standard DVD player shows issues with moving pictures (zooming in / out) which results "close to Moiree effects" (Images are kind of flickering). I tried another TV / DVD player, same result.
When getting into the movie all titles who are at the very right position are cut and some parts are missing. I checked the picters more closely and also on the pictures there are lements missing. I changed the project in iDVD back to 4:3 format but with the same effect.
Any hints / suggestion where to look? Should I post this better in the iMovie section?
    Regards,
    Andreas

    Hi Andreas
In what program did You do Your movie ?
    • iMovie'09 or 08
    • iMovie HD 6 or previous
    • FinalCut
    • Other ?
When I use photos in movie projects to DVD then I first in a photo editor like
PhotoShop or Elements to each one apply slight Gaussian Blur
This makes them more enjoyable on TV.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Song in imovie project

I am not sure why, but some of my imovie projects have an explamation point over the audio. I assume this is because it can not locate the source track. The song still plays along with the video, and the song is indeed in my itunes. Is there any way to point the track to the correct tune, as opposed to having to delete the song, drag it in again, and align with the video the way I worked so hard on the first time?
    Thanks

Yes! Urrrgh! Very frustrating. I have never had any problems with iDVD prior to my latest Quicktime and iTunes upgrade. Since I have upgraded these app's, I have been getting the same, "computer not authorized" BS. (exactly as you described it). I really think the upgrade is the problem.
My sense is that since iTunes is such a popular cross platform application, every new upgrade is trying to catch some kind of licensing loop-hole in the system. I read this in a Steve Jobs interview recently. So, the loss of revenue due to file sharing between multiple computers/iTunes and iPods is more of an issue, than what the licensing loop-hole upgrades do to iDVD. As soon as enough people complain, MAC will create an upgrade to correct this issue.
The glimmer of hope: any song that I have not bought through iTunes has seemed to play in iDVD, and has made successful burns to disk.
I await more positive news as well. I want my iDVD back!!!

  • Accidentally deleted iDVD program - how can I get it back??

Hi, I have a G4 that was handed down to me from a relative - it's running 10.3.9. Problem is, it came with iDVD on it but I accidentally erased it. I have video in iMovie that I want to burn to a DVD.
Is there any way to get iDVD back?? I have the Mac OS X operating system disks but those do not have the iDVD app. on them! I thought I could download it from this site, but all I see are upgrades. Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated - thanks!
P.S. I have an external LaCie DVD burner.

Yep, it sure will. You may have to install an app called, 'Patch Burn' if you find an older version of iLife, but versions 06 and 08 support external burners without the patch. Ask your friends first.

  • IDVD video back to Apple TV

How do I convert an iMovie video burned onto a DVD with iDVD back to iTunes so that I can watch it on my Apple TV?

    Winston Churchill wrote:
I get the feeling we aren't necessarily talking about home videos here. Make no mistake, there's a clear difference between output from each of these applications, this is particularly apparent with low quality source DVD's which I'm afraid most home made DVD's are.
I think we're advising about iDVD created DVDs in essence as per the OP's question....
The source of the video is irrelevant really, as it will be the quality it is
Speed or quality, it's a simple choice, anyone who tries to tell you can have both is mistaken. If you are happy with your process, stick with it.
I've recently come to think MPEGStreamclip may offer superior conversion of video, though I've not done many objective side by side tests. You may have done so with some of your home videos. However, I suspect that as with many of us creating DVDs may now be low down the list of things we want to dod, when chances are the MPEG-2 encoding will degrade the source if you're only going to re-encode in h264.
That's why I'm saying it would be interesting to maybe post some conversions via both of home video footage, encoded with similar resolution/fps etc.
You also have high-end video software, does MPEGStreamclip beat that too?
Or, is that a simplicity vs quality argument with no distinct benefit for FCP?
