IMovie to iDVD with higher quality results

I have been working for several weeks on a 30 minute presentation using iMovie. It was a little slow at the start, but it's absolutely gorgeous now with video, stills, voice over, multiple CD tracks, etc. I am thrilled at the result and it's going to be given out to a lot of people who were involved in a huge service project. My problem is that when I export to iDVD and burn it, the photos are pretty bad. I've adjusted iDVD to highest setting, but it's still so disappointing. Options? Are there non-Apple solutions for this or another version of iDVD? I would appreciate your help. I have not been on here before so if this has been solved somewhere else--just point me there.

Also, iMovie 9 uses single-field processing when exporting, so basically you are losing every other horizontal frame. There have been huge discussion threads about this with recommendations for obtaining better quality exports: Ziatron prefers iMovie 6 with iDVD 8/9. Steve Mullen posts lots about video quality....but does not realy use iDVD.

  • Slideshow with high quality

I have a Photography Studio and I am trying to create client slideshows that display in very high quality. If I view the slideshow as created on iPhoto, the output is fantastic. If I burn a disc with iDVD (even on "Best Quality") the images as viewed from the DVD are not great. They become a little jaggy and some color shifting is evident. Not horrible, just not professional looking. My files are high quality .psd files. I have tried the process with high quality .jpg files, too.
Is the answer a PRO level DVD compression product? Voodoo????
I am at my wits end, but it was a short trip to get there.
Thanks for any and all help,
    Louie

    Hi,
I understand you want to create a DVD, right? Before you know how to get the best quality, you must choose what software to use . You can build slideshows using just DVD Studio Pro (DVDSP Folrum) and/or in a video timeline with FinalCutPro (FCP Forum).
Each soft need a different approach ! You'll find a lot of posts with useful information in that forums and you can post your own when you decide what tool use for your project.
If you want to build simple slideshows with just a transition or no transition at all, where the people can choose next prev and so picture, you can use DVDSP.
If you want a more sofisticated presentation where you can control completly adnvanced trasitions and zoom/pan effects, you need to create it in a video application like FCP.
You posted this question in Compressor forum, what is a tool for transcoding your video footage to, i.e. MPEG2 files to include in DVDSP.
About quality, think that Standard Definition DVDs have a resolution of 720x480 pixels (NTSC) what probably is absolutly low resolution compared with your original pictures, but doesn't mean your pictures will look bad. Any comercial movie DVD you watch has that resolution ! The advantage is that every DVD player (computer and stan alone ones) will be able to play it.
When you mention the iPhoto slideshow, I think you mean a slideshow you played directly from your computer what is a completly different approach that DVD.
I just want to give a start point.

Click on the  menu at top left of your screen, choose About This Mac and, in the panel that appears, note the Version no. in the form 10.n.n. Then update your product list so we can see what version of OS X you're running on the Mac — see this tutorial:

  • Ventrilo Mic Hiss with high quality Mic and X-Fi Titanium PCI-E

?Ventrilo Mic Hiss with high quality Mic and X-Fi Titanium PCI-E? I have <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/4/A40-Headset/]this headset.[/url]? It works perfectly on other setups and is a very high quality headset.
Recently, I installed the X-fi Titanium PCI-E card. Everything sounds great and my mic works well in other programs and games, however, when talkin in ventrilo there is?a noticeable high pitch?microphone hiss. The hiss goes away when I put my fist around the mic, but I can't exactly talk like that. Plus putting foam around the mic doesn't make it go away.
The headset works fine on other setups so it is not at fault. It's almost like there is a mic boost on, but there doesn't seem to be a mic boost feature in the Creative Console.
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
    Intel Core I7 920 @ 3.4ghz
    6GB RAM
    4870x2 GPU
    Asus P6T Deluxe MOBO
Creative Sound Blast X-Fi Titanium PCI-E
Any ideas. I've tried everything. I used to exact same ventrilo settings on another computer and have had no problems, so it is not ventrilo and is not the mic. It has to be something wrong with the sound card.
    Thanks

Turned my T.V. off and the hiss went away.
Must have been some sort of interference.

  • Low quality DVD outcome.. need help for high quality result ASAP!

    Hi every 1,
(This is my first post, as I only got my iMac 2 weeks ago.. so please be gentle with me :P   )
I have just been asked to turn a Microsoft powerpoint (PPT) into a DVD for "induction training video" purposes with voice overs and backing music. I have a professional music studio so providing high quality audio is fine, but trying to turn the power point into a high quality DVD file is my problem. This powerpoint has timing transitions (fade ins etc) for the timing of voice gaps. When using Microsoft PPT, you can turn the PPT into a Quicktime file which I was going to drop into iMoive then add the music and voiceovers.. this is when my problems started. Microsofts powerpoint doesn't add the transtiions and effect into render Quicktime movie, so I thought as my new iMac has iWork (KEYNOTE) I'd give it a try and to my surprise it all worked and the final mpeg4 quicktime movie result work great _when you look at it on the MAC_.
    1) Problem
I then exported the file into iMovie and then my first Problem arose.... (grr). I movie lost it's sharpness and the images started to have pixelation.. that seemed to pulse in 1 seconds gaps.
I hope this was just an issue with the iMovie preview window and thought once I put it into iDVD and burnt it... the final result may be fine.. but I was wrong and the quality was crap... with the pixelation still there.
    2) Problem
The other problem that came up was the about 25% of the edge of the total screen was cutoff. When i did the original file, I choose 4:3 ratio, and watched it on this..so where did the image size go wrong.. I also choose the "high quality" Quicktime file, but didn't go into the settings in the iMovie in the export section (which I should off), but after check the compression type was H.264.. and I also didn't change any settings in the 'export file' section in KEYNOTE.. this is where I think I must have gone wrong..
So in closing. my questions is:
-What's the best way to turn a PPT into a _high quality file_ so it looks professional once it goes through iMovie and iDVD.. or
    - Should I just redo the whole production using iMovie ( by re doing all the work eg wording, transistion inside iMovie seems like a lot of extra word ) and so not use the PPT at all... and if I do this, then
    - What's sizes, and ratio and compressions should I use for 4:3 ratio TV purpose (eg. whats size should a background image be that I do inside Photoshop, so I can put the transition wording over the top, so I see it on the TV screen and the edge doesn't get cutoff etc.?
I was very impressed with Keynote and would be happy to use this for most of the production.. but am I banging my head againist a wall...re fixing quality problems when exporting files into... can someone shed some light on this for me?
Sorry this is such a big post.. but I thought if I gave you most of the background you would have to ask so many questions.
Look forward to any help any 1 can provide..
    Michael

    Matti,
Thx so much for your help.. it's really appreciated. This is by far the best result quality wise, (but I really am a perfectionist and personally are still not overall happy with the final product) but if my client is happy.. then I will continue down this track for this job.
    ie Create TIFF;'s>Quicktime PRO>iMovie (transistions)>iDvd
You've been a great help and I hope it good enough for the client.
I find the images and wording lose their sharpness only after being imported into iMoive. I could still be probably enhance the quality level of the TIFF's once more, as I did the test slides in Keynote, then exported the 5 slides a individual as TIFFS out of Keynote, then imported the into QuickTime Pro as you suggested then followed your instructions all the way to the final burning of the CD. I also tried doing this in Photoshop using your suggestion of 720x576 images (for PAL) .. pixel aspect ratio to ~1.094 so you can see the correct proportions for 4:3 video output. When creating the new slide in Photoshop there were a few extra settings other than the ones you gave me... _so I would real appreciate what every setting should be when creating the NEW TIFF file in Photoshop for PAL 4:3._ I noticed when I did this the image crispness on the fonts was shithouse pixelated and shadows, even while looking at it from inside Photoshop )
As I tried mutliple ways of importing into iMovie (yours being the best suggestion) I really believe when dragging a TIFF or movie turns to blur on the way into iMoive. You can see the image is blurred from that point on.... _do I need to buy final cut pro or express to get a better image quality result?_
I also tried iMoive7, which I found was great to use video editing wise, but Apples has definitely stuffed up there by not give users a 'time line' to work with in the Audio section... but everything else in the video area was great to use.., but in my situation trying to line up the narration to slide, while having also background music is now impossible sadly.
Also I really like the 3D transitions in KEYNOTE, plus iMovie 7.. do you know if there are available for HD6 or if there's a 3rd party company that has smilar versions
    Thx again,
    sycosingo

  • More than 1h with high quality!possible?

hey my dear creativity-friends,this my first post here and it's about the sweet iDVD.
is it possible to have more than one hour high quality DVD (burned by iDVD),HOW!?
i'v already done tow DVD projects with iMovie and iDVD,the first one was about 40 min , the results was outstanding, sharp and colorful
the other project was about 90 min the results was very pixely, blur and has alot of saml dots when the screen show dark pictures.
i used the same Cam on both projects and the same Mac on the same iLife06 and my PB G4 running the holy Tiger 10.4.6.
    thank you guys

If your PowerBook has a DL SuperDrive, you could encode a disk image as DL and burn that to a SL DVD-R. I did that and noticed a positive difference.

  • IMovie or iDvd with USB2

Is there a way import from a digital camera into imovie or iDvd through the USB 2 port and not firewire?

    You are most welcome.
Btw, the reason apple uses firewire as opposed to USB for data transfer from the camera to the computer > iMovie is because FW transfers video as a constant stream of data. Firewire thinks on its own without high CPU demand. FireWire, uses a "Peer-to-Peer" architecture in which the peripherals are intelligent and can negotiate bus conflicts to determine which device can best control a data transfer.
USB on the other hand, transfers data as packets of information and is highly processor intensive. Furthermore, USB isn't constant and is more prone to dropped frames when transferring data or video streams. Hi-Speed USB 2.0 uses a "Master-Slave" architecture in which the computer handles all arbitration functions and dictates data flow to, from and between the attached peripherals (adding additional system overhead and resulting in slower data flow control)
Question: Which is faster Hi-Speed USB 2.0 or FireWire?
Answer: In sustained throughput FireWire is faster than USB 2.0.
Question: If Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is a 480 Mbps interface and FireWire is a 400 Mbps interface, how can FireWire be faster?
Answer: Differences in the architecture of the two interfaces have a huge impact on the sustained throughput.

  • Exporting final project for youtube (with high quality)

    hey guys,
i have been trying to export videos and upload them onto youtube giving them a high quality look for some time now.
the website recommends for the best quality:
    -mpeg 4
    -320X240
    -MP3 audio
    -30 fps
there is even a video on it here:
    http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=55745&topic=10526
i tried two different ways of exporting my project. i use fc express hd on a macbook pro...the first export was an mpeg 4 divx export. i used the 4 recomendations but it still came out pixilated. i then tried the regular mpeg 4 option in the export menu. this one had a different audio option. there was no mp3 listen and ACL audio or something like that,
either way they both came out pixilated! this was only a 5 minute long video. i have seen plenty of videos on youtube that were 8 minutes long and crystal clear.
there must be SOMETHING i should change in my exporting options! please help! its been like a year and a half now that ive been searching for clear youtube videos!
    thanks for your time,
    Mike

hmm i tried there suggestions and unfortunatly it came out pixilated!
i was excited to see the results too because that page given seemed like it would work...
i double checked all of the settings and they matched up with what they suggested...
does any body have any suggestions? thankyou!

  • What Is The Best Way To Connect Ipod To Stereo Reciever With High Quality?

I recently purchased an 80 gig and am a newbie. I ripped all my music at around 280kbps to retain good audio quality when playing in my car and home theatre system. There are tons of accesories out there (docks, jacks, etc) which is the highest quality to connect my Yamaha receiver. I would think a connection to the bottom of my ipod would be of a higher quality rather than using the headphone jack. Any suggestions would be great. I was thinking about using the monster itv link but mostly for audio. thanks

OK - So now that you have all completely ignored the original question - in hopes of proving your manly-hood....
Does anyone have an answer to the original question....
"What is the best way to connect to a high end home stereo to retain the best sound?"
For sure any connection going through the headphone jack will be a big step back - enough so that you would easily hear a sound quality loss in doing so.
For the few of you who would like to argue/bicker/rant on the nominal sound quality loss....keep on doing so, but for those who actually have some respectable advice we would love to hear it.
For the record, I tend to hear just outside the normal human auditory range...
To help myself put it to rest already... a few years back I decided to conduct my own little listening test.
I took 6 different common ripping modalities (from lossless - to - 128kbps in both MP3 & AAC.... then transfered all of them in order to a blank. Used the same song for each - the song chosen opened with a few clean crisp bars of high freq. music, followed by an instant explosion/drop into a tight & low bassline.
The final cutoff that was achieved before I was unable to detect an audible difference was 198 VBR AAC. Having convinced myself that there was the ever sooooooo slight difference b/t 198 & 256, I went with my current ripping status of 256.... Just incase my audible range should become finally honed with age (yeah, like that is really going to happen) !
This test was run over a Yamaha DSP receiver, running at a constant 110w per channel (w/a max of 220w). The speaker setup was a full surround set of Klipsch Reference Series..... each speaker housing 2 x 6.5 woofer (each housing 2 x 1" Titanium tweeters) And sitting along side the 5 surrounds was/is a 150w continuous 12in. Subwoofer.
Now I am hardly stating that I have hearing as good as some of you extremely technically profound music enthusiasts out there, but for the majority of people making comments about sound quality, and lack there of - when played over a $120/40w Audiovox radio.... I'm sorry, but I would have to side on that of......"Hogwash, that you can hear a difference!"
So.... if possible would someone please offer some advice on a dock or cable connection that will allow us to enjoy the music we ripped at whatever
    so-called range we did!
For those interested in seeing who could hit the further bullseye with their eyes closed, You win!!! Now can you help us?

  • Tracks cutting short on iPod after replacing with higher quality files?

I've been replacing old mp3 by deleting them from the hd then "re-finding" the newer higher quality versions in iTunes.
Problem is all these new files always cut short in my iPod, it's been driving me mad, I thought the solution would be to erase the pod completely then replace all the files, I did this (twice) and it still happens, I even filled my pod with completely different mp3s just so I knew the files were definitely getting wiped but still the tracks I replaced cut short when I put them back on the pod.
I really hope the only solution isn't to delete the files from iTunes then re-import them, I've been trying to avoid this as my library is a few years old now with a bunch of meta-data (play counts, ratings etc) that will be lost if I do this, there must be some other way, seems a bit silly, I'd really like to know why it's happening.
This only happens on my vid pod not my shuffle btw.
    any suggestions?

Ok thanks, I downloaded vbrfix but I'm not quite sure how it works (though I replaced the line of code for Mac as outlined) is there something I have to do to get it operational?
It looks like it's a problem with the iTunes metadata fooling the iPod into thinking the vbr file should end earlier then it does, maybe because cbr data was there originally and hasn't been replaced with vbr data, though it's strange this only manifests itself on the vid pod.
Would I really need to re-rip my cds? problem is I wanted to use the LAME encoder which can't be done very satisfactorily from with iTunes, it looks like maybe this vbrfix could just alter the metadata in the files themselves to make them more iPod friendly?

  • Your tip in Printing in Indesign--working with high quality images

    Hi everyone,
I am very curious about what the other professionals' idea about printing and using Indesign to print.
I am working on a project that with high resolutions of model and product images together.
Since I had to move elements on the layout. Model and product images are in different layers in Indesign.
I used Indesign to combine those images together to create ads for magazine.
However, I was told  that it would be "SAFER" to combine those images together FRIST in photoshop.
he thinks the process should be that:
---Having a flated image of model and products in photoshop first
----then bring that one image in Indesign.
----This way it would insure the color will be right.
    What do you guys think?
The places I worked in the past, has not done stuff like that.
I feel like ...colors aren't something we could control when magazine uses their own printing vendor.
What is your process to ensure the color is right when priting a combination of different high resolution tiff files?
Thank you very much for your time and knowleage.
    Lori

Assuming you have some sort of color management in place, I would continue to do it the way you are.
But let's say you did want to follow this fellow's advice. Here's everything I can think of.
Putting the models and products together on one Photoshop "page" can wind up making the PSD file very big as there may be spaces between the models and products.
Never, ever flatten that Photoshop file. There's no need and makes a very complicated workflow if you have to make any changes.
You're right about the magazine printing process taking over color.
What are you sending the magazine? A PDF? There's totally no need to flatten in Photoshop then.
The art is flattened in it's own way.
I'm also assuming that your prducts and models are close to each other
