IMovie to QT - titles unreadable; also: endless rendering...

Two big problems with iMovie -
I saved my 3 minute movie made entirely of titles (for a vocabulary lesson - I'm a teacher) as a Quicktime - it's completely unreadable it's so blurry.
Using newest versions of quicktime, etc., changed the setting on QT to highest, which worked for the full size (1G!), but did nothing for the web-quality size.
Now, back in iMovie - I tried changing the color of the words to see it that would help and now it won't stop rendering. I've quit, restarted, tried again, etc. but no luck.
Arrgg.
Please advise!

movie made entirely of titles
So you don't really need 30 frames per second showing
the same title, right? And video resolution limits
the readibility, right?
Good point! Yes!
You could use some image editing app (Photoshop,
Graphic Converter etc) to compose images of desired
resolution and insert the titles to them.
Here's the thing:
I'm not using ANY images -
I'm using the titles in iMovie to type in words and definitions
and enjoying the animations I can make the text do for interest.
That's all I need to do. Would I still need to do this in photoshop?
Then name them so they sort as desired and open them
in QT Player Pro as an images sequence with the
desired frame rate. Then export them using some
non-DV codec with the original resolution.
What would that be?
Do a test
which codec is suitable (anyone?).
Thanks for your help!!!

  • Transitions and titles going black when rendered

For the last few months, I have been making some movies in iMovie HD, ranging from 2 min. to a bit over 20 min. long. Most of the content is iMovie08 slide shows imported to iMovie and interspersed with brief video clips taken with still cameras. Have done about two dozen at this point, with only one minor problem prior to the current one. (In that case, when I added subtitles they began to include several extra "trailer" sections, which wasn't a particular problem unless I had another subtitle following closely. Somehow, that resolved itself.)
The current movie was coming along fine. I had successfully added a couple of cross dissolves in the beginning between sections of slide shows and movie clips, then went on to complete the rest of the movie (20 min.) before going back to add the rest of the transitions and some titles. When I tried to put in cross dissolves or overlaps, the preview was correct but when the transition rendered, it became a fade to black followed by a cut. (Have subsequently checked several of the other transitions which I would not likely ever use and they all transition to black as well.) When I tried to put in titles, they also previewed correctly, but rendered over black instead of over the image. Tried all the easy stuff like closing and reopening iMovie, rebooting, making a new copy of the project, clicking the "over black" box off and on a few times. No luck. The only think I did any different in this project from all the others is turn or edit contrast/saturation in two clips in iMovie08 before exporting them back to iMovie HD.
I created a new user account and made a test movie and did not have the problem. Logging back in I deleted the cache and the plist files for imovie. After rebooting i can create a new project and the subtitle and transitions do not go black. The original project still has the problem. I even opened the project package and deleted the cache inside the project.
Has anyone figured out any way to salvage a project that is holding on to damaged preferences?

Did you try logging in on a new account and opening the problem iMovie file in the new account? I wasn't certain from your post whether you did that. Can other trouble free movies be created/played in the old account now that you deleted preferences?
Also, did you do a permissions repair in additiion to deleting the .plist file? You didn't mention that in your list. You should do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac.
Have you added any 3rd party or Quicktime plug-ins lately? These sometimes can cause conflicts. If you have any, you could try moving them to a different folder to temporarily disable them, and see if that solves it.
Make sure that you have sufficient free disk space for iMovie to operate efficiently. 20GB to 25GB is oft recommended on this forum.
Make sure that your Quicktime is updated to current version.
Any new software installed lately that could be causing a conflict?
If the problems are occurring solely in the currrent project, and the diagnostic efforts that you have made don't solve it, then you probably should start over. This is a relatively short movie, so the effort is fairly minimal. Can save a lot of time in the long run. You might be able to clear out all of your titles and transitions and transfer your clips into a new iMovie project with all of the editing still intact. Always make a backup copy of your movie, first.

  • Anyone know a way around iMovie's inadequate title capabilities?

i'm new to mac and this is my first time using iMovie. i want to create a title and my title is longer than a few words (it is a sentence). in iMovie, the only title setting that allows me to break up my title into multiple lines (like you would a textbox) that are actually readable is "Far Far Away". I do not want this crazy animation on my title though. All other title options make me put my entire title on one line, making it tiny and unreadable.
Anyone know a way around this?
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, my title plug-ins work with iMovie 2 through 6.
For Intel-Macs, you need to run through Rosetta, as they are not Universal Binary.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to compile them for Intel as they are built using CodeWarrior according to the old SDK model. (SDK=Software Development Kit, which is Apple's "interface" for programming). Compiling for Intel-Mac requires XCode and a heavy re-write of the code, since the XCode SDK has a different structure than the CW one.

  • Large font titles look broken after rendering

I'm having a problem when trying to create large, frame-filling titles in Final Cut Pro X. They look fine before FCPX starts rendering, but afterwards, there are chunks missing from the corners of certain letters. The problem is the same with various fonts. The font size is 580 and I'm using the 'custom' title. The images attached show what the title looks like before rendering (fine) and after (broken). I've tried exporting as a master file to see if it's just a problem with the preview, but the title still looks broken in the exported file.

Ah, that's a shame. Is there any way around this? Perhaps I could somehow turn the title into a transparent image and replace the title with that? I can't actually wait for Apple to fix the bug as I've got a deadline and need to get my video published!
Yes, you can do that if the title is static. Create the text you want in an image, and bring the image into FCP X.
You can make the letters transparent in the still image software or, easier perhaps, use the blend modes or create a key in FCP

  • IMovie 8 and Titles?? Plz Help

How do you get a title for iMovie to go in the middle of a video clip. I like making youtube videos and would like to explain what certain things are is in the video.. but the problem is whenever i drag a title to the middle of a clip it does not put the title in... If there is any way of doing i would like to do it.
I find that if you put the title at the end and drag it to the clip point you want it works but it take way to much time
i do not know if i have to save anything but i would enjoy this because out of the whole imovie 08 the titles are the coolest part the app.
Thanks for Reading this if you know anything plz reply
    -Nick

Drag the title to the top of the middle of the clip. Drag it to where you want the title to start. Then you can click on the title to give it focus and you can adjust the end point by dragging the right side of the title as a handle.

  • When I render a lower third title does the video also get rendered?

Just learning FC Express. I have created a lower third title which obviously lays over part of a clip. I keep adjusting it and render it after each adjustment. Is this re rendering the video part of the clip as well and possible degrading its resolution each time?
    Keith

Rendering the lowerthird does render it composited with the video and so does render the video with it. However re-rendering it does not degrade the image as it is always rendered from the original file.

  • IMovie '09 forgets title changes

    Hi,
I'm very pleased with the new features, perfect for a quick movie when I'm not in the mood for FCP. I've discovered one snag though, where I've made changes to titles, iMovie might forget and revert back to previous text the next time a project is opened. I can't find a pattern to this behaviour though, it seems to happen at random. Has anyone else noticed something like this?

Yeah, I am having problem with Titles too. Soo I posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1945257&tstart=0
This is my problem & what I did, though no success guaranteed.
Something irritating happens to me when using iMovie '09.
I made a short 5 mins movie, after testing and what not & after being satisfied, I then goto Share > Export Movie, type a filename then press ENTER. A message then appeared and say "Preparing project ...". After 7 mins, the movie is completed.
Then when I played the movie, I realized I don't like the fonts of the titles. So I went back & amend the Title. Then I repeat Share > Export Movie. When I chose the same filename, it asked me whether I want to replace the old file. So, I clicked REPLACE.
When I opened up the file, it played the old movie (meaning the amendment of the title was not reflected). How come it is still playing the old file ?
Fed up, so I tried again, this time deleting the old file before sharing it again. Doesn't work, I tried deleting old file and naming a new file, it also doesn't work. I notice all this time after clicking Share > Export movie, instead of the message "Preparing Project", the message now says "Exporting Movie".
Being too fed up, this time I tried inserting some photos & then took it away & do more amendments. This time when I clicked Share > Export movie, it says "Preparing Project" and it worked !!
I can only conclude that after you clicked Share > Export movie, if the message says "Preparing Project", it will work but you got to pray that the message that comes out is not "Exporting Movie".
Is it a bug that you must make more amendments than just changing the fonts of the Titles ?
Is this a bug ? Or is there some settings that I missed out ?
Any ideas what went wrong ?
    Thanks

  • IMovie '06 bug - Titles - Animated Gradient

I couldn't find anyone else who asked this question under iMovie '06 so I'll post it here.
It appears that whenever you have created a title with multiple lines, and then click on the Animated Gradient title under Clip to Character, or any of those transitions, iMovie will crash. Once it opens back up, if you haven't previously saved the project immediately after working on a multi-line title, you can use it just fine. Otherwise, you have to work on or create a single-line title in order to use one of these transitions.
"Save early, Save often" is not a phrase I usually associate with Apple, nor is quit and restart, but both have become regular practice in this version of iMovie.

I'm actually having problems now duplicating the problem on cue in a new project. I can get it to crash, but it's kind of hard to give the exact sequence. The project I'm working on is a DV/NTSC/Full Screen (4x3) mode movie. It consists of photo stills, transitions and titles, with a music soundtrack.
    For example:
Take a song purchased from iTunes and place it in the timeline.
Take a photo and place it into the timeline set at 00:05:20 duration
    Copy and paste that clip
Apply the black and white effect to the first clip
    Create a 2:10 cross-dissolve between the two
Add a 1:16 Fade-in before the two and a 1:16 Fade out after
Using Edwardian Script ITC font (if you have it on your machine)
Put in a multi-line Centered title over black, largest size
Put in a multi-line scrolling block over black, largest size
In the Titles Pane, click on a different Title type, just not a Clip to Character.
Click on another clip then click back on one of the title clips after it has rendered. Make sure the titles pane changes to the appropriate Title.
Test 1) Try to select one of the Clip to Character transitions, specifically Animated Gradient, as if you were going to update that title clip to an Animated Gradient.
Test 2) Click on one of the multi-line titles and add several lines (4 or 5 pairs)
Keep going back and forth between title types, both with a current title clip selected, as well as without.
This is the type of situation where I am running into trouble. The kind of text doesn't matter. I typed in several lines of gibberish and it did the same thing as the "clean text." Punctuation doesn't seem to be an issue. I thought maybe a ' I was using was throwing something off. That doesn't seem to make a difference. The fact is I can get the title put in, but only if I am careful about how I go about it. That is frustrating.
    Hope this detail helps.
    Thanks for looking into this.
    Sean

  • Titles & Graphics Move after rendering

I am new to Adobe Premiere Elements 9, and seem to have random issues on video's, which do not happen all the time.
In the first screenshot from the first video below, You can see the logo, fade and name are all lined up properly
After the video renders, regardless of the format, I end up with something like below. I am not sure why the text shifts outside of the green bar from where it was originally placed.
Any suggestions or insight as to why this happens?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.
I have seen similar, where the Project's Preset did not match the Source Footage (the Video Clips), and things get mis-aligned.
Titles are dependent on the Project Preset for things like Frame Size and PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio).
Check your Project Preset settings for all attributes vs the Source Footage, just to get that out of the way.
Next, if one has done any animation on the Title (Titles in your case probably), I would look closely at the Animation Presets, if used, or the animation Keyframes, if one did not use an Animation Preset.
Can you also include a screen-cap of the portion of the Timeline, where your Title/Titles appear? I would actually do two, where one would be with the Text Title Selected, and the Effects Control Panel (Edit Effects with a Clip Selected will open that), and the fixed Effect>Motion twirled open. The second would be with the Shape Title Selected and again, the Effects Control Panel open to Effect>Motion.
If you did not manually animate the Titles, then please list the exact steps and settings that you used, plus a description of the Title/Titles.
Thanks for the info and good luck,
    Hunt

  • IMovie clips turn black or clear when rendering color or contrast changes

I have several iMovie projects on 6.0.2 using a MAC G4 Dual 800 MHZ computer with OS 10.4.7, two Internal 80GB HD and a 160GB External HD. I am using a 20" ViewSonic VA2012wb screen.
I have split up and edited some 25 clips and am now doing some color and contrast corrections on some very old 8mm films from the 40's.
Following the rendering process, when I return to the clip to view the results, part of the clip is corrected and the remaining part is blank with either black screen or sometimes white. If I click on "restore to original" the clip returns to a full clip with all the image. Originally I thought the blank was caused during uploading and therefore cropped out that portion and lost some footage. It does not occur consistantly and seems to occur when the film is very dark or the colors are very faded and requuires drastic changes.
Why does this occur? What should I be doing differently?

If you are using iMovie on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) try this:
First delete the iMovie Preferences file:
    Go to the Desktop
Look for the Go Menu (hold down the Option key) then click on Go Menu
    Choose Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Drag that file to the trash, restart iMovie and see how it reacts
Second step is to Repair Disk Permissions
Restart your Mac while holding down the Option key
When you see the two startup volumes appear, choose Recovery Volume
Run Disk Utility > Repair Disk Permissions (an let it run until it completes)
Quit Disk Utility, and reboot the Mac
Launch iMovie and see how it reacts
Lastly, Check out this Discussion Thread from September
I movie quits unexpectedly during editing and publishing
from Jasonryan1. It relates to a corrupted item existing in his project. And in his attempt to troubleshoot it, he suspected it was a Title he placed in the Project itself. So it might be the case something got corrupted within your project that's preventing the video clips from playing back properly.

  • IMovie 09 - Will titles downgrade 1080i quality?

I think I now understand the quality issues with v8.0.1/v8.0.2 relating to FX (other than cross dissolves and fades to black/white) downgrading the quality of 1080i clips to "Large" but could someone tell me if the inclusion of a Title, either overlaying an video image or on a plain black background, would also cause a 1080i image to be downgraded across the whole movie?
I am about to start my first edit in iMovie 09 and want to know what to expect, if titles will cause a problem then I'll create physical titles and shoot them with the camera rather than create them in the program. By the way the camera is a Panasonic TM300 (AVCHD).

    Titles over video are fine.
But for some insane reason Apple decided that plain backgrounds were to be included in the "bad" FX category. So I grab some video and dial EVERYTHING down to create black video.
Of course the correct thing is to use photoshop to create some colored mattes and import into iphoto.

  • Imovie HD and titles

    Hello
I am using imovie HD (Version 6.0.4) and also the new imovie version that came with ilife 08. Both programs are working, but when I want to add a title in imovie HD, than the program crashes. Solution? Thank you.

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.
    Yours Bengt W

  • IMovie crashes during title

When I click on the Titles toolbar or otherwise try to add title sequences, iMovie unexpectedly and suddenly crashes.  Any ideas?

So I read that the best thing to do was to backup all files, delete iLife, and reinstall. I backed up all files to an external harddrive, deleted the programs, and reinstalled. Did not work. Did you guys try this yet and did it work for you?
My next guess is that it's an update issue from Apple and I'm just waiting for the next update... I deleted the most recent additions that I made to iMovie (songs, titles, photos, videos) back to before it started having this problem. That also didn't work... I made a wedding video for a family member and JUST finished it and cannot publish it. It's KILLING me!!!
