IMovie to Quicktime to FCE

I edit my movies in FCE, but for various reasons I like to edit slideshows in iMovie 08. Sometimes, I would like to take a slideshow edited in iMovie and use it as the basis for an FCE project. If I export a slideshow from iMovie to Quicktime movie and then import that Quicktime movie into FCE, would I lose picture quality?

Thank you, skalicki. I have added effects, titles and transitions, so the XML export/import won't work.
I intended to export from iMovie using Export Using Quicktime, then selecting Movie to Quicktime Movie, and using the default settings of:
Compression: None
Depth: Millions of Colors
Quality: Best
Dimensions: 960x540 (Current)
There is no audio. (In fact, that's the main reason I would like to get the project over into FCE--so I have better control over the audio.)
Using that export method, do you think I would lose picture quality? In other words, if I export a Quicktime movie from iMovie, then import it into FCE, then use FCE to export to Quicktime Movie again for use in a DVD, will the DVD picture quality be poorer than if I had gone straight from iMovie to DVD?
Is there a different export method you would recommend?

  • I have my iMovies in QuickTime format on an external drive. Is there anyway to show them from the external drive without putting them into iTunes?

I havei my personal iMovies in QuickTime format on an external drive. I prefer not to have to import them into my iTunes library which is nearly 1GB already. Is there any way to play them from my MacBook Pro through Apple TV 2 without importing them into iTunes?

Just wanted to add a little to the excellent comments from those above... I have debated on adding the content to iTunes or just accessing the content through some folder structure.
What has worked best for me and my family:
use VideoDrive - http://www.aroona.net/VideoDrive/Home.html to import the videos/tvshows into iTunes and make them in the correct format for my iPad/iPhone/AppleTV devices in the house. This software is cheap and excellent and make the adding of content to iTunes (i everything) easy!
I store my videos on a usb 2tb drive and my tvshows on a different usb 2tb drive. And I swap a drive out every year or so and give old drive away to family/friends. That way my media drives are new(ish) and 1 drive is never older than 2 years.
for media that I don't want to add to iTunes I still use AirVideo as it is an excellent piece of software. I also use AirVideo to allow me to access content on my home network over the internet.
my "media server" is a simple 4 year old intel mac mini with 1 gig of ram best $700 I spent when I first flipped to all things mac. Family now have 2 mbp's, 2 iPads, 4 iphones and 1atv (2nd gen)
I'm working on a document that shows how I did my setup - if you want to read more please feel free to download my preview - https://files.me.com/lee.gaupp/aq0gst

  • Exporting from imovie to quicktime movie

I have a 1080i HD movie in imovie I want to export to a quicktime file. In imovie the file is 50 gigabites. When I export at full quality it turns it from 16:9 to 4:3. When I go to expert settings and render it to a quicktime movie only the sound comes through...no video. This only happens with this particular movie. Other short movies I have are compressed to quicktime in HD just fine. I need suggestions how to render this from imovie to quicktime so I can keep the video in HD.

I tried that and it makes a file without
    video...sound only.
Itsounds like you didn't have the Sound box checked.

  • Error-50 sharing imovie to quicktime

I have been failing at getting my imovie into quicktime...its 212 minutes long and I'm saving it to an external Hard drive results in error-50...what is my problem? too long?
last week before my previous hard drive crashed...it was error -39 and I made it as short as I could with same error -39.
HELP! Is there a decrypter program for MAC that I could use?

    Hi James,
just to add catspaw's excellent advices...:
both error codes indicate some trouble with the file system.. esp -39 tells us, at the end of the file, "something's missing"... (I'm not an engineer, my words...)
besides the fact, that 212min is VERY long (my audience falls asleep after TWENTY min of homebrewn projects), my guess is: you use some "computational codec" meaning, (you haven't told us, WHAT QT codec have choosen), I assume, you tried mpeg4, h263 etc.. so, Mac needs loooong time to render; external drive falls asleep (=standby)... and between wake-up and writing data, something got lost....
step one: try again, set energy savings to zero...
in case you're interested in "Apple errorcodes", google for it, my list is in German ;-))

  • IMovie updated quicktime share choppy

I shared an iMOVIE to quicktime last week and it was great (played and looked smooth). I made 2 minor changes, updated to the latest quicktime, shared again and now the movie is very choppy and of lower quality. Can someone help? I DID NOT USE EXPERT SETTINGS.
    G5 imac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

My guess it had to do with the QuickTime update in the middle of a project.
You should always start and finish an imovie project with the same versions of everything.

  • IMovie and QuickTime question ?

PLEAE CAN YOU HELP ME IN THIS QUESTION, WHEN USING IMAGE SEQUENCE IN iMovie AND QuickTime Pro, AND IF YOU HAVE IMAGES VERTICAL AND ONES HORIZONTAL, THE SEQUENCE TAKES THE SHAPE OF THE FIRST IMAGE AND USES IT FOR ALL OTHER IMAGES. SO IF FIRST IMAGE IS VERTICAL ALL CONSEQUENT IMAGES ARE VERTICAL. HOW CAN WE MAKE THE SEQUENCE TAKE THE SHAPE OF EACH IMAGE INDIVIADUALLY IRRESPECTIVE OF THE FIRST IMAGE IN THE SEQUENCE.
    Thanks a lot

< putting hands of ears... aahh! good! >
same here: I'm not a 100%, what iwaddah tries to accomplish, I stumble over "QTpro" and "image sequence"...
QTpro allows the conversion of a socalled image sequence into a dv; e.g. you do cellpaintings for a toon, you open that sequence - voila! => video...
    buuuuut:
these files have all to be the same size, rotation, aspect ratio and have to fullfill some specs in naming (consequtive, pic001, pic002...)
my guess, iwaddah's sequence does not fullfill all that; if the first pic is "portrait" (not landscape, video is 4:3), the final video will probably "squash" all pics... (never tried that)

  • After exporting a video from imovie, to quicktime, the audio has been duplicated. How can I fix this?

after exporting a video from imovie, to quicktime, the audio has been duplicated. How can I fix this?

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

  • Freezing when exporting from imovie to quicktime

Everytime I export this one imovie into quicktime, it freezes at a video about half way through, the audio continues to play through the whole video but the image is frozen on the video. This has happened to me before with another imovie, and I don't know what to do.

  • Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie to Quicktime, saved on my desktop.  It started saving as INDIVIDUAL files, as in about 5400! Entire system froze, completely unresponsive.  Powered off 3 times now, it comes on and displays my screen saver but nothing

Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie into Quicktime, saved to desktop.  System started saving INDIVIDUAL frames instead and entire system froze.  Powered off and on twice - screensaver appears, but that's it - nothing else is accessible

Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then reboot as usual.

Turn off Time Machine before you open iMovie. It's a semi-known issue right now.

  • Can't export imovie to quicktime

When I try to convert my imovie to quicktime, I go to share under the file menu and selct CD-ROM in the compression menu. But when I click the share tab my movie is grayed out and I cannot select for transfer to quicktime.
Please tell me what I am doing wrong.

You actually could have gone under the same file menu, or the share menu a couple of toolbar menus down, and rather than import or share to Quicktime, this time share it to iDVD. iDVD will open automatically and then you can select a theme, add photos, etc.
You can drag a QT file from the desktop or wherever into iDVD, but since you first saved your movie as a Quicktime file with CD-ROM quality, you probably do not want to use this file. You would want it to be Full Quality. Then you could open iDVD, create a new project, and simply drag that file into the window. But again, why not just export from the iMovie application directly to iDVD?

  • Compress from imovie to quicktime, saving chapters

    Hello,
I am creating movies in imovie and compressing them into quicktime movies. I have created chapters in imovie and want to preserve the chapters in the quicktime movie. What compression settings should I use for this?

I can't find a chaptered reference movie from the movies I have created. Not sure if this means you found the proper folder and it was empty or if it means you didn't know how to open the project package files. Not knowing your level of experience, will assume the latter for the moment.
    1) Locate your iMovie project file
    2) Control-mouse click on the icon
    3) Mouse click the "Show Package Contents" option in the windw that opens
    4) Double-click the "Shared Movies" folder to open it
    5) Double-click the "iDVD" folder to open it
    6) Double-click the reference MOV file that represents your current iMovie timeline to open it in the QT Player
If your iMovie timeline contains a chaptered movie/clip segment, the the QT Player should be displaying it with the chapter feature at this time. (Try selecting chapters at random in the chapter pop-up list to ensure the feature is working correctly.)
Is there a way to save the movie from imovie to quicktime with the chapters that is not so huge?If by this you are asking if it is possible to convert the movie to a new format with a much smaller file size (and/or display dimensions) and retain the chapter track, then the answer is no (as far as I know). However, you can extract the chapter data from the reference file described above and apply it to such a converted file.
I also can't find a way to save a text file from imovie. Could you explain a bit more?I personnally would recommend use of a third-party utility to do this -- Metadata Hootenanny 1.1.4 (free) -- if you are using a PPC G5 here. The following would be a typical workflow when using this utility:
    1) Export your chaptered movie from iMovie to your desired format (e.g., "Movie to iPod") in the normal manner
    2) Open Metadata Hootenanny and drop the iMovie reference file onto the "Library/Playlist" work area
    3) Press the "Open Book" icon to switch to the "Chapters" area to view chaptering data
    4) Press the "Save to Text File..." button the save the chapter data
    5) Press the "List" icon to return to the "Library/Playlist" area
    6) Delete/Clear the reference file from the list
    7) Drop your converted target file to the "Library/Playlist" area
    8) Press the "Open Book" icon to switch to the "Chapters" area again
    9) Ensure "Scale Chapters from Files" and "Allow Editing Chapter Times" options are set
    10) Press the "Open File" button and load the chaper text file saved above
    11) Test capter markers using he integrated media player and adjust frames/chapters if required
    12) Return to the "Library/Playlist" area, sace the chaptered file, clear the list, and quit
    13) Open the Movie in the QT Player, test chapters, set presentation options if desired, add graphic and set as poster frame if desired, deselect any active selected area if desired, reset play head to beginning of movie if needed, and use "Save As..." to rename final movie/reset "fast start" option as desired if destined for web use.
Am currrently busy working on a project so I can't prepare a better example of this work flow, but here is a LINK to an older sample file made in this manner.

  • IMovie or QuickTime to view on iPod w/ video?

My father-in-law just got an iPod w/ video. Can I create iMovie or QuickTime projects that he can view on his iPod?
I want to create a short video project, post it to my .mac page for file-sharing and have him download it and post it on his iPod.
I have iMovie 4 but use iMovie 3 because of stability problems.
Thanks in advance for any insight on this.

    Steven:
Go to file-->export. If everything is updated on your mac, then there should be a movie to iPod option. This will create a quicktime file. Drag that to iTunes and then sync to your iPod.
