IMovie Trailer Question about Event

When I attempt to create a trailer I'm presented with a dialog box that asks me to create a title (no problem) and an event. I don't understand what event I should select. None of the media that I will use is in any of the listed events. I will be using photos from my iPhoto library.
Since I have to select an event I am at a standstill.

Question about Events stored on an external drive

Hello guys! I recently freed up a TON of space on my iMac by adding an external hard drive and you guys advised me on how to get iMovie '08 to store my Events there.
Question: I'm going to Rome Italy tomorrow and I'm going to be doing a ton of video footage. My Macbook doesn't have the hard drive space to hold what I'm going to be shooting.
So, my question is......considering that I'm using this external drive to store Events from my iMac will I be able to to use that same external drive on this trip to manage Events on my MacBook?
In other words, I just want to make sure that I don't confuse either version of iMovie that I have operating on these two different machines. Can I use this same external hard drive to manage Events from both machines?

I actually have no set-up to test my speculations but...:
when you tell iM08 to store Events on some ext. drive, it creates on 'Top Level' of that drive the 'iMovie Events' folder..
so, when you do that with a second Mac/iMovie... I guess, it will confuse the file management.. (=you can not create two indentically named folders... ) ... and, I guess, you can not create/select a sub-folder for the Events...
best practise would be to partition the drive.. but that isn't possible without erasing any content on your drive..
Plan B) invest 100$ for a 2nd drive.. ? (last week offer: 79€ for 500 gigs.. no bad... )

IMovie - quick questions about video files when importing and optimizing

Hi, have some quick questions. I think they are simple.
1. When I import a video (from say iPhoto), where does it get "Move" or "Copy" to?
2. Why would I want to do "Copy" instead of "Move", because isn't it then taking up more space?
3. I'm wondering if after I optimize a video, I can stash away the original (non-optimized video that I either "Move"d or "Copy"d earlier) into an external hd.
4. By the way, what is the new file name of the optimized video?
Though things are working fine in iMovie and iPhoto, I'm trying to manage hard disk space, and hope answers to these questions will help.
Do you guys have a guideline on how to manage hard disk space when it comes to iphoto and imovie?

A 3 minute song has a file size of about 30 Mb in AIFF format. Converting it to MP3 reduces it to about 3.5 Mb and M4A to about 5.5 Mb.
iTunes will do these conversions for you and M4A is far superior to MP3 as far as sound quality is concerned.

MDM iView resultset problem and question about eventing

Hi experts,
I created a MDM iView resultset for my main table as search table (comparison is not supported). When I click on preview I get an empty table ("Found <Tablename>: 0 of 10", table contains 10 entries at the moment). I tried the same with a subtable and everything works fine (all entries have been in the preview table). Any ideas why I don't get a result?
My 2nd question: can I choose the parameter name in eventing (EPCF) on my own? So if I have Vendor_Id as field can I use vendorid as parameter name? Do I have to define anything in the listener iView (e.g. in detail iView for an event from resultset iView)? Maybe you have a useful tutorial link (please not SAP help section)?

[JS] Basic question about event listeners and event handlers

I am very new to the whole topic of event listeners and event handlers. I'd run the test for the following problem myself, but I don't know where to start, and I just want to know if it's impossible -- that is, if I'm misunderstanding what event listeners and event handlers do.
Say I have an InDesign document with a text frame that is linked to an InCopy story. Can I use an "afterImport" event listener on the text frame to perform some action any time the link to the InCopy story gets updated? And will the event handler have access to both the story that is imported, and the pathname of the InCopy file?

Both of those are good solutions.
We are currently using InDesign CS4 and InCopy CS5. I'm hoping to get them to purchase the whole CS5 suite soon, since I'd like to start writing scripts for InDesign CS5 as soon as possible, as long as I'm going to have to be doing it in the not too distant future anyway. The greater variety of event handlers sounds like it might be something that is crucial to the project I'm working on, so that adds to the argument for getting CS5.

I made some promises to my boss yesterday that I later realized were based on assumptions of mine about the InDesign/InCopy system that didn't make any sense, and I was going to have to retract my promises. But after reading your response I think I can still deliver, in a slightly different way that I had been thinking before.

Question about event handling in JComponents

I have often found it useful to create a component that acts as an event handler for events the component generates itself. For example, a panel that listens for focus events that effect it and handle these events internally. (See below).
My question is: Can this practice cause synchronization issues or any other type of problem that I need to watch out for? Is it good/bad or neither. Are there any issues I should be aware of?

Handling events this way is completely fine and saves on number of classes. Only thing you may want to watch out for is that the handler methods have to be public. This means that someone could use your component and call one of the methods. For example, I could write:
panel.focusGained(new FocusEvent(....))
when it's not really gaining focus. So, if you're writing this component for re-use you might want to be aware of this.
An alternative:
Use a single internal class to handle all events. It can then delegate to private methods of your component. Example:
class MyEventHandler implements FocusListener, MouseListener, etc... {
public void focusGained(FocusEvent fe) {
doFocusGained(fe);
public void mousePressed(MouseEvent me) {
doMousePressed(me);
Then your component could have:
private void doFocusGained(FocusEvent fe) {
private void doMousePressed(MouseEvent me) {
etc...

IMovie plugins + question about a transition

I heard that Apple has some free iMovie plugins that you can download but I don't know where they are. Does anybody know where?

The exact place where it happens is at 1:45. I know that the scenes are slowed down and it looks like a cross dissolve, but when I tried it, it didn't work. Anybody know what was done?
Oh, and in case you're wondering, no I haven't been able to contact the guy who made the video, otherwise I would've asked him already.

The free plugins that Apple offered was some time ago. I think most of them have long since been incorporated into iMovie.
As for your other question, it looks like what you're trying to do is not so much a transition as it is the layering of one video image over another.
One way to do this is with QuickTime Pro. For a serious iMovie user, it's a useful tool. Kind of a Swiss Army knife for video.
Use Edit>Add to Selection & Scale to add the second video layer. Then open Window>Show Movie Properties. Select the second video track and click Visual Settings.
Select Blend from the transparency drop down menu and adjust the level of transparency to your liking.
Export the completed effect to DV Stream and then import that to your iMovie project.
I know my directions are a bit brief. Post back if you have questions.

A simple question about events

I have created many event-based jobs. One task sends message to a queue to drive those tasks to run. If the task sends two message to the same event-based job in a very short time such that that job has not finished yet. Will that job run twice?
And when the job is ready to response the message in the queue, if there are two messages in the queue. Will these two message be both dequeued or just one be dequeued and the job will response the second message later on? What I mean is this:somebody sends two message into the queue, will the event-based job run twice or just once? Thanks

Hi,
In 10.2 the job ignores events that come in while it is responding to another event. So if two events come in at the same time, the job will begin running one of them and the other will be ignored.
In 11g you can change this behaviour by setting the job attribute "PARALLEL_INSTANCES" to true for the job. If this is set to TRUE, then the job will run exactly once for every single message no matter when the messages come in.

Question about event handling in a button

I recently coded a console version of my java program (just outputs stuff into the system console and a logger). I am now adding a simple GUI with a set of buttons to start and stop the program. In order to do this, do I just copy paste the main function contents of the console version of my code into the button's event handlers or is there a way I can just run the main class? I was googling for Class loading in java but I'm not sure if this is what I should be looking at... Can someone please help me out?

I got a question about Event structure,Attached is a simple example, there 's one VI in each of these two event.Is it possible to make the two VI(VI 1,VI 2) run at the same time? because when i run Example.VI,i can only make one of the VI run,if i want to run the other one,i have to close the current one,any suggestion? thanks!

If I understand correctly this is the scenario that you're looking at. The user presses the vi1 button and vi1 begins running. This vi continues operating until the Stop button is pressed in vi1. You want the user to be able to press the vi2 button and have vi2 begin running also.
One possible solution is to use notifiers in your event structure instead of putting the vis there. You can then put the vis in parallel loops triggered by the notifier. I have attached a quick example to show how this would work. This approach allows each of the vis to be started and stopped as many times as you like in any order.
I would also recommend that you use a reference to the Stop button on the main vi to allow you to stop the subvis.Message Edited by John Rich on 06-10-2005 11:59 AM

I have a question about iMovie?

I have a quick question about Imovie and I hope someone can please please please give me an answer, I want to hear lol. Is there any way i can get more transitions or titles on Imovie? or would I need to invest in photoshop or something that would give me more of a variety, because I use power point sometimes to jazz up my videos; but I can't convert powerpoint transitions into Imovie. so thats why i am curious. I look on youtube and some of these people transitions and stuff is a little more advanced than what imovie have so i am sure theres something out there. I just dont know what.

Quick question about iMovie

I have a question about iMovie. I've used Final Cut Pro before using iMovie, and FCP allowed the user to play two video/images on top of each other. You could play with the opacity and the duration very easily.
I'm wondering, can you do the same thing with iMovie? I'll be VERY disappointed if you can't do it.

QT-pro can do this as said above - but You need to be very precise.
But I would do this in FCP and then export as QT.mov to do the rest in iMovie

How do I import photos from iPhoto into the iMovie Events window? I want to use photos in my iMovie trailer program

i want to use some of my photos from iPhoto library in the iMovie Trailer program - it won't let me import them. I tired to sneak them into the Events library but can't seem to be able to do that either when using the imovie trailer feature, I have to open up a different project to be able to import photos, but only able to drop them directly into a project, not the events folder -- I can't get photos into the event folder.

You cannot add photos to a trailer.
The solution is to get as far as you can in the Trailer withou adding the photos. Then, select the trailer in the Project Library List, and click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT. Now it is an iMovie Project, and you can do anything that iMovie can do, including add photos wherever you want.

Basic question about storage and safety in iMovie '11

A very basic question about storage and safety:
I want to keep a backup of my raw footage on my external hard drive prior to begin working on the movie in iMovie. I want to do this:
1. Upload the digital files from my camcorder to my Desktop *(as opposed to iMovie)*
2. Duplicate that footage/clips.
3. Put the duplicate clips/footage into a folder labeled with the name of that footage (like "Fun At the Dentist" or "Jimmy Learns How to Yodel").
4. Drag the folder with the footage/clips into my external hard drive into a pre-existing folder titled "Backups/duplicates of all of my raw footage/clips." This big granddaddy folder will house all of the child folders of different movies.
5 Then, open up iMovie '11 and import the raw footage/clips from my Desktop rather than from my camcorder.
6. Then I want to make a duplicate of my finished movie and put it in my external hard drive in a "Finished Movies" folder.
I know that the original raw unedited footage will always be in iMovies '11 but I want the original to also exist immediately accessible in my external hard drive.
QUESTION:
Is this viable? Is it wise? (I know it goes an extra unnecessary step, but aside from that.)
*Do you have any precautionary advice?* Should I do something in my iMovies '11 preferences? What?
In earlier years with iMovie '04 or '06 (cannot recall) I made many novice errors and ended up losing audio to my finished movie. I also lost footage.
This time around with iMovie '11 I don't to make such novice, ignorant errors.

The iFrame format is something Apple has come up with. The reason for its existence is unknown to me so I can only speculate. But it seems to me that Apple "invented" this format in order to have devices such as Ipod/Ipad/Iphone/Ixxx create clips that are editable on consumer hardware such as already mentioned devices but also standard Mac computers, without the need for format conversion.
iMovie converts most input formats during import, which takes a lot of time, and this need for conversion often comes as a surprise to most people new to home video editing.
iFrame has a resolution of 960x540 which is long way from the common standards of 1920x1080 and 1280x720. If your end target is YouTube however, this may not be too bad though. However if you intend to go with YouTube HD, you may find iFrame footage to look wrong since they are effectively upscaled to a higher resolution.
Technically iFrame uses the H.264 algorithm, a smaller frame size (960x540) and a rather low compression scheme. This will result in large files, but the plus side is that the files are ready for editing without the need for any conversion and iMovie will natively edit the files.

Questions about converting files in order to import to iMovie '09?

I was able to import the videos from my camera (.mts files) into iMovie '09, but now when I click Import from Camera, iSight opens up instead. Since I can't find out why it won't open up my camera files now, I have decided on just converting the files. I just have a question about converting though. The videos I recorded from my camera are in HD. They're very good quality. If I convert the videos from .mts into .mp4, would that reduce the quality of the video?

When that happens to me I get stubborn and make iMovie see the camera by shutting down and reopening iMovie, because I don't want another level of transcoding. If that doesn't work and you have a card reader of even better, a sd slot on your iMac, just plug the card in. If it appears on the desktop iMovie should see it, and if it appears on your desktop then iMovie should read it.
I have a Canon HFS 100 that works best if I take the card out and plug it into the computer.
The times I converted to .mp4, I thought the quality did degrade, because it had to be converted to .mp4 and then imported as AIC. But I am not an expert on whether iMovie can deal with .mp4 directly.
Canons require that one have the camcorder plugged into a power outlet, another reason to use a card reader.
What kind of camcorder do you have? With some camcorders, if one takes both photos and video, the video won't be read.
When nothing works, occasionally deleting iMovie preferences works.
