IMovie Trouble Importing

I have had my Pro for awhile and importing has been fine with my Canon HF10 Camera. Normally, I just plug my 8GB SDHC card into the USB adapter and open iMovie and it automatically brings up the importing screen. However, today I tried to import some new footage and it at first processed it but then it stopped and never finished generating thumbnail images and the importing menu came up blank. I ejected my SDHC card and tried again and now there is no recognition of my card in iMovie. My MacBook Pro still detects it but I cant import my clips now. Any thoughts?
Thx Mike

I found I've got a similar issue. I have been shooting on the internal memory of the HF10 for a while with no issues importing directly via the camera. I recently tried recording directly to the SDHC card (8GB cl4) which appeared to be fine, but iMovie '08 refuses to see the items available to import.
What I noticed was that while the internal memory shows the AVCHD folder at the root of the "drive," the SDHC card shows a "Private" folder. If I open the Private folder, I find the AVCHD folder and then inside is the usual array of folders and files.
If I move the AVCHD folder to the top level of the drive, iMovie '08 sees the clips with no problem, but then the camera reports no clips on the card.
What gives?

  • Trouble importing from canon t4i into imove

So I have a canon t4i and I've been having trouble importing my videos from my memory card to imovie, and iphoto wont even let me upload it. I tried converting it to AVI (which took a few hours) and It's still not doing anything. I don't know what to do and it's really frustrating.

    Hello Samantha3232,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Some video clips may not import into iMovie when using the Camera Import window
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4485
From the File menu, choose Import > Movies.
In the dialog that appears, select your camera from the sidebar.
Locate and select the video clips on your camera that you would like to import.
    Click the Import button.
    Best of luck,

  • Trouble importing from Canon HG10

I have a Canon HG10 camera (HDD, AVCHD). I'm having trouble importing to iMovie '09 (8.0.6).
Initially the camera was not being detected by iMovie at all (it did mount on the desktop). Searching the forums (here and elsewhere) it seemed that this was a common problem with the HG10, and that the solution was often to initialize the camera's HD (through the camera's own menus). Unfortunately this wipes out all the movies already on the camera, and I had several hours of critical footage on the camera. I decided to try it anyway, making a copy of the HD's entire contents to my machine before initializing.
Initializing did fix the problem. I recorded a short clip on the newly blank camera, and upon connecting to my machine iMovie detected it immediately and I was able to import.
My dilemma now is that I need to somehow import the several hours of footage that I had copied to my machine before initializing the camera. In one forum it was suggested that I could use the "Import Camera Archive..." option in iMovie, and point it to the backup copy of the camera's contents that I had made. When I do this I get the message "Folder is Not a Camera Archive".
I tried copying the old contents of the HD back onto the newly initialized camera to see if it would be detected. No luck — camera reverts to not being detected and must be initialized again.
Suspecting that the auxiliary files in the camera's folder structure might be the issue, I tried selectively copying files from the backup copy over to the camera's folder structure (e.g. just the MTS files). This didn't work (surprise surprise).
I see in other forums that it's possible to get raw MTS files into iMovie, but since I have all the files in the original camera structure it seems there should be an easier way.

I used Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php to convert to mp4 H.264 Codex Large file size
Import this into iMovie it takes time but at least you can recover this .
I kept still the original MTS files just in case as backup Cheers Herb

  • Trouble Importing from iPhoto

When I try to import a short video clip from iPhoto to iMovie (something I've done successfully many times) I get an "unknown error" message that says the clip cannot be imported. Any ideas?

One idea is to import the video clip without going through the iPhoto interface. Use iMovie's import command -- if that doesn't work, then perhaps the video file is .avi or something that iMovie has trouble converting.

Hi dupedd - it is an mpg file. iMovie HD needs DV formatted material. What was the source of your file?
You will need to convert it, using:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):

  • Having trouble importing select pictures from a cd to my iphoto library

I am having trouble importing (and viewing) my vacation photos from a cd to my iphoto library. Some of the photos I can view in finder, but when i click on the rest, I get a message that says "Item xxxx.jpg is used by mac os x and cannot be opened". When I tried to import the photos to my library... the ones I could view imported no problem, the ones I couldn't view will not import and I get a message saying "unreadable files: the following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)". I am just sick that I cannot find these photos!!! =( especially since I had them on iphoto before I cleaned out my computer (so I've had them in my library before). Any ideas? I am in desperate need of help! =(
P.S. When I try to move the pictures to my desktop, I get a notice that says, "you may need to enter the name and pasword for the administrator on this computer to change the item named xxxx.jpg"... when I click continue, another message pops up and says, "the item xxx.jpg contains one or more busy items that cannot be changed"

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What do you have set in the System/CDs and DVDs preferences to do when a disk is inserted? If the option is not set to the Finder do so and see if that will make any difference.
Otherwise boot into Safe Mode and see if you can copy the files from the CD to a folder on the Desktop. Boot back into your normal account and see if you can import. Or import while still in the Safe Mode.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Trouble importing contacts from a tab-delimited file into Contacts on 10.9.5

I am having Trouble importing contacts from a tab-delimited file into Contacts on MacBook Pro, OS 10.9.5, Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo., 400GB drive, 4GB memory DDR3
    So far I have:
    - Followed closely the help screen in Contacts app
    - Modified my source document meticulously - first in MS Word, then copied and tweaked in Apple's "Text Edit" app
    - The problem arises when I go to access the document for import.  Specifically, the target document, and all others in that file, are "greyed out" and thus can't be "opened" to facilitate the import process
    - Tried changing the extension of the document name to ".txt", ".rtf", and ".rtd". No change or improvement.
    - Searched Apple.com/help and found nothing relevant
Can anyone offer some advice or tell me what I may be overlooking in this process?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,

    Hi Rammohan,
    Thanks for the effort!
But I don't need to use GUI upload because my functionality does not require to fetch data from presentation server.
Moreover, the split command advised by you contains separate fields...f1, f2, f3... and I cannot use it because I have 164 fields.  I will have to split into 164 fields and assign the values back to 164 fields in the work area/header line.
Moreover I have about 10 such work areas.  so the effort would be ten times the above effort! I want to avoid this! Please help!
I would be very grateful if you could provide an alternative solution.
    Thanks once again,

  • Can i connect a Samsung VP-D381 to iMovie to import videos?

I have recently bought a Samsung VP-D381 Mini DV camcorder, and have just tried to connect it to iMovie to import a video that i have just recorded, only to find that Samsung do not have any software or drivers for the Apple OS...
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how i could get this to work?
    Thanks

    Hello,
(I posted the same answer to a similar thread)
I have the same camcorder and same issue, though with iMovie '09.
Symptoms on my Samsung VP-D381 are :
I can import when in Camera mode (live capture)
I cannot import what has been recorded on tape (import window stays blue)
I can forward and rewind and stop.
I found a trick I hope will be useful for you :
    open iMovie.
without connecting it yet, put your Panasonic on "Play".
when video plays, plug the DV cable in.
iMovie opens the video import window and then you should see the tape playing.
press the "Import" button to capture the DV stream.
Let me know if you find other ways to get it to work. I'm quite frustrated Samsung cannot make a DV camcorder work with iMovie, 14 years after DV went out!

  • Confused about Sony HDR-SR7 and iMovie '08 import

I have my camera set to record at HD XP (15Mb/s). If I look on the camera hard drive at an arbitrary .mts file that is 107.3MB and import that into iMovie '08 at the Full (1920x1080) setting, that 107.3MB file turns into a whopping 854.5MB, while the Large (960x540) setting yields a much more reasonable 287.3MB file size (yet still double the size of the raw file sitting on the hard drive).
There's got to be some re-encoding going on, but what's the point? Why take a 100MB file and explode it to 800MB when you can't get any more quality out of the 100MB file?
Is it just the fact that iMovie doesn't actually support whatever native codec Sony's AVCHD uses, so it needs to re-encode it using AIC whose compression isn't as good as whatever codec AVCHD is using?
So this poses a real dilemma for me - do I import at Full or do I import at Large? Where does one notice the difference? If I blow up the 960 file to display the same size as the 1920 file, I can totally see artifacts on my 30" ACD, but would they show up on my Pioneer plasma TV? PDP-5070HD (1365x768))
Assuming I stay on Full quality - is there any way I can accurately tell how much hard drive space an import is going to consume? Right now my 60GB drive is rammed to the gills and I want to dump it all, but I need to make sure I have the space. 1:8?

    Hi
*First: it sounds like you are not importing to iMovie, it sounds like you are trying to browse to the clips. That may not work.*
Ok - I was trying to import and also to view directly on the camcorder (but not at the same time). It was maybe 2 questions rolled into one so apologies if that was confusing...
*Second:You have SD and HD mixed, All of the SD has to be imported before any HD can be imported according to the manual.*
So what would I do, import SD movies first, and then delete it to then import HD specifically? Or do I just import SD and then import HD separately without deleting SD footage from the camcorder?
*Third point: The clips can be on the hard drive or the card. The camera has to be set to the media with the clips you want to import. If you recorded to the card, then switched to the hard drive, you won't be able to import the card video until you switch back.*
I dont have a card at the moment - only using the HDD.
*When you have the import working it is a matter of using the check box to select the clips you want.*
i assume iMovie loads them all up and asks you which ones you want to import?
*Alos one final point for video on the card I find it much easier to use a card reader to import. When I plug in the card reader to my usb port it mounts on the desk top, I start iMovie and the import screen comes up after iMovie is all opened up and running.*
I dont see much point in the card reader at the moment as the HDD is 120GB whereas I assume memory sticks only go to 8GB or so max...
*I hope I have been of some help.*
yes thanks for that - but am still confused by the whoel iMovie & HD import situation and how I should be doing it
    All help appreciated

  • Trouble Importing Files PSE 7 to Windows 7 (32 bit)

I am attempting to install PSE 7 into a computer running Windows 7, 32 bit.
The installation was a success to the extent that I was able to connect a catalog containing a huge amount of photos, (180,000 +) to the organizer, and after several hours of "generating thumbnails" the installation seemed to have stabilized.
However, when I try to import new photos, the "get photos from files and folders" operation takes ridiculous amounts of time, and is sort of "hit or miss" in that it sometimes it hangs altogether and I have to use "task manager" to shut down PSE.
Other than this, the program seems to be working normally (!) or maybe (?)
I have tried various compatibility modes, (XP SP2, Vista, Vista SP 1 & 2) with very little difference in results. Well, maybe Vista SP 2 was a tiny bit better.
The computer this is installed in is a Pentium C2D 2.8Ghz (E6300) w/ 2 GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM. So, it's got plenty of "juice" to deal with PSE's requirements.
My photo files are stored in folders & sub-folders on a separate internal HDD (750GB WD).
Both PSE 5 and 7 work on 3 other computers containing the identical catalogs and photos, in basically the same configuration, including separate storage drives for each. These machines are running Windows XP SPs 2 or 3 (I use multiple computers as a back up strategy, copying the entire existing HDD to another, then install the drive into another machine, import the catalog file into PSE, and change the HDD letter to match that of the existing catalog). Done this way, the PSE installation is identical to that in the previous machine, and is up and running rapidly.
launching such  a large catalog takes a bit of time to initialize, or search (understandably), but on these other machines there is no trouble importing, locating, or managing files.
I should add that on the Windows 7 machine, Windows Explorer works quite well in accessing all of the photo files, so this sort of rules out a problematic Hard drive.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Ellis, PSE 7 is simply not permitting me to drag folders from Windows Explorer into the organizer. It just blows up the dreaded "black circle with diagonal slash", and that's the end of the issue, at least as far as PSE 7 is concerned.
Since I've had to terminate this program abnormally several times, it resets the preferences upon restart. The other day it hung when I was trying to set preferences, so as you might expect, I'm very cautious about making changes. I don't know if changing any preferences would enable drag and drop, I'm just trying to illuminate the eggshells I'm walking in trying to stabilize the program.
In answer to your question, about the "documents and settings folder", no, I'm not using in any of my photo file paths. I realize I may have confused the issue with that statement, it was out of context. But my purpose in doing so was to obviate the differences in file paths that PSE is expecting, and the file paths that I'm using. Perhaps that was a bad example.
I almost never use either the "My Documents" or the My Pictures" folders in Windows, nor do I allow PSE to use them. Storing data of any kind on the OS drive (C:/) is not in my repertoire of "stupid things I like to do, even if they're destined to end badly".
All of my computers have a minimum of 2 physical HDDs, not partitions. All video, music, photos, program installer files, etc. are stored on a discreet, separate, HDDs, (identified in "My Computer" as, (IE) " G: Volume")). The "C:/" drives are exclusively for Windows and installed programs.
That said, a typical file path to a group of photos in my computer would be, "My Computer" > "G:/ Volume" > "My Digital Photos" > "Airshows" > "McGuire AFB 2007" (In case you're wondering, I'm way too lazy to go through that each time, so I add desktop shortcuts to the extra HDDs and even the largest folders).
As you are well aware, that is completely different from the file path that PSE would choose by default. A file path for which I have a great deal of disdain. But, that is another complicated and contentious issue, which doesn't have a clear winner thus far.
Anyhoo, I think that PSE would "appear" more compatible (and probably is )with Windows 7 if it were allowed to follow it's own choices as to where to store the photo files. One supposes the folders that Windows 7 "creates" for earlier programs further aids (supposed) compatibility.
As I mentioned in one of my other somewhat long winded posts, I now have a viable option for importing photos, "find photos by searching", the manual drill down modus operandi. Works great!
I'm not expecting this installation of PSE to do any, "heavy lifting" with respect to editing, or a resting place for un-backed up photos . It's in a new machine I just built for the primary purpose of, extra backup,  recording TV, and perhaps installing a Bluray drive. The motherboard has HDMI output, so it plugs into the TV directly, and the PSE slideshow function works perfectly.  With a 40" TV, it's even better than a slide projector for boring relatives with vacation photos!
So, although this thread is still marked as "unanswered", I do have a workaround solution. There should be a check box indicating, "it won't ever be answered until Adobe issues a patch"! (Like that's going to happen).
Again Mr. Ellis, thank you very much for your interest in this issue. I might add that I have read your page on problems with PSE and it's obvious that you have applied a great deal of thought, effort, experience, and industry toward helping people deal with PSE more effectively.
As an afterthought I have several copies of PSE laying around, 2,3,5, & 7, (some in multiples) and I've never had a serious problem with any of them. So I'm actually astounded when I see the litany of issues that apparently manifest themselves. This is my first actual issue, and Windows 7 is pretty upfront about PSE 7 being an incompatible application.

As an iLife '08 owner you are also entitled to a free download of iMovie HD v6.0.4 if you want it.
Does anyone have any idea how to move the clips to the old version from the 7.1.4 version which is sooo infuriating.
You can open the named_Event folder containing the iMovie '08 imported clips and "drag 'n drop" them to an open previous version of iMovie or you can open the previous version of iMovie, select the "Import" option, navigate to the named_Event folder, select the file(s) you want, and import it/them to the older application.
I also miss being able to turn one frame into a photo.
JPEG images are automatically created in the named_Project folder any time a single frame is selected/added to an iMovie '08 project. They can also be created by QT Pro ($30) or MPEG Streamclip (free) directly from a source video clip.
