IMovie Trouble

Hello
I'm having  little troubel with iMovie. I'm making a movie which have over 700 photos in it including comments.
What i did was adding all 700 photos at once and adding comments to each photo and make chapters, so that i could edit it later.
But when I change the length of a single photo the project have to load and work it in with the entire project . This is a little frustrating to do that with 700 photos.
Is there an easier way?
I was thinking of dividing the project into smaller bits and combining them at the end, but it doesn't seem possible.
Can anyone help me?

YES
Do like this
This little tick - Matters
Let it be like this instead
Not selected - and it affects just the selected clip.
YES - MATTHEW MORGAN has a vital point ! ! ! ! ! !
Breaking up the movie into parts (individual projects) - makes things so much easier !

  • IMovie trouble shooting list (prel.)

    Hi
Anyone that can add to this list of what to do - test when in trouble ?
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it
All addition to this is very appreciated !
Most probably I missed out something very obvious ?
    Yours Bengt W

    Just remembered some more
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work

  • IMovie Trouble Importing

I have had my Pro for awhile and importing has been fine with my Canon HF10 Camera. Normally, I just plug my 8GB SDHC card into the USB adapter and open iMovie and it automatically brings up the importing screen. However, today I tried to import some new footage and it at first processed it but then it stopped and never finished generating thumbnail images and the importing menu came up blank. I ejected my SDHC card and tried again and now there is no recognition of my card in iMovie. My MacBook Pro still detects it but I cant import my clips now. Any thoughts?
    Thx Mike

I found I've got a similar issue. I have been shooting on the internal memory of the HF10 for a while with no issues importing directly via the camera. I recently tried recording directly to the SDHC card (8GB cl4) which appeared to be fine, but iMovie '08 refuses to see the items available to import.
What I noticed was that while the internal memory shows the AVCHD folder at the root of the "drive," the SDHC card shows a "Private" folder. If I open the Private folder, I find the AVCHD folder and then inside is the usual array of folders and files.
If I move the AVCHD folder to the top level of the drive, iMovie '08 sees the clips with no problem, but then the camera reports no clips on the card.
    What gives?

  • IMovie trouble sharing/exporting

hi i am having issues with sharing/exporting the movie. i can see the full version run through well in iMovie, however when it comes to sharing/exporting, i can hear the audio but the images arent coming through- they are distorted.  i have prepared for publishing as well, turned it into 720 and 1080 but still no joy.

I'm not too well up on Mac OS X Error Codes - even though I've googled this for you, and suggestions seem to indicate that Error 0 means "no error", but that doesn't sound right - so all I can offer is:
Error codes are 'pre-written' and have to cover a wide range of circumstances, so they're not always appropriate to the actual problem (..like in DOS, "Bad command or filename" could mean almost anything: mistyped word, command term is missing or in the wrong place, program doesn't exist or has been moved, etc).
So the actual wording of an Error message may imply something quite different, e.g; you "don't have permission" to write to a disc may mean that the disc is actually full, so there's no more room to write to it.
If you've already made three iMovie projects, and created two iDVD projects from those, and none of that material has been deleted from your Mac, then perhaps you're running short of space. Why not check and see how much free space you have on your iMac, as burning a DVD can need up to about 4.5 GB of empty space to build the DVD "disc image" (..depending on how long the DVD runs for).
Not having "permission" to do something can also mean that various files may be in the wrong places ..which sounds like the consequence of renaming folders, or moving programs out of the folder where the system expects to find them. Could you have renamed any other folders, beside the 'Pictures' which you've now corrected? Could you have moved the iDVD program - or any other item which iDVD is trying to use - from its original position?
Not having "permission" to do something is such a catch-all, that you'd really have to narrow things down to what exactly is different, or what changes you've made on your Mac, between earlier projects and this latest one.
Sorry not to be any more helpful than that!

  • IMovie troubles - file will not save properly

I am a novice to iMovie, and I spent hours learning it and creating a slide show with music. It wouldn't let me make the last change and save it - adding a title. In fact, it would not even let me save it to the hard drive, saying there was not enough room. It forced me to revert to the last save (without the title). I was OK with that, but my saved version has been changed - the music and transitions were all taken out. I went through this twice - each time the changes were lost. It completely ignores the "save" or "save as" command.
I know I have over 100 GB of free space. I've had this iMac only one month. The fact that the little slide show is 1 GB surprised me - I used about 20 photos which I scanned in today, and one 3 minute song. I wanted to share it on iDisk, but since I can't, I thought I'd burn it to dvd.
However, when I played it again, I realized the music and the transitions were gone - they apparently had been put in the trash (with a notification that "stray" pieces were in the trash and would I like to see them). I did not empty the trash, but if my changes are ignored every time I add the music and transitions again, what am I to do?
Why does the "saved file" change by itself?

    Welcome to the forum!
What you describe -- the failure to save the project -- can occur if the disk the project resides on isn't correctly formatted. The problem usually occurs on an external Firewire drive the user buys and starts using without reformatting.
The drive must use the Mac OS Extended disk format. To check the disk format, click on the disk in the Finder and choose File > Get Info. The disk format is shown in the window that opens.
If the drive needs to be reformatted, use Disk Utility to erase it. Note that erases files on the drive so first move them to some other drive.
About the size: the size of the iMovie project won't necessarily match the size of the movie you are making. There may be lots of stuff in the project that isn't included in the Timeline. Generally, one hour of video = 12 GB of data. (That's uncompressed.) So if your project is 5 minutes long, that's about 1 GB.
Note that before sharing it on your iDisk, you can export the project to a compressed movie. (The Full Quality export is huge, and not good for sharing.)
Here's a note that suggests the H.264 codec for exporting a movie like yours. It might help you get started. To play the movie, those who download it must have QuickTime 7. Some may not. It can be downloaded from from Apple.

Wait a second. You posted in the iMovie 4 forum but you said you've had your iMac just one month. It should have shipped with iMovie HD (iMovie 5). Please say which version you have. It probably doesn't make any difference for this problem, but the two applications are quite different.

  • IMovie Troubles - Speeding up video

Is there any way to speed up video or apply slow motion in iMovie '08? I think there is in '06, so I'm frustrated that it isn't intuitive or existent in the new version.

Yes but im08 is basically a new application, it has some stuff im6 doesn't have and doesn't have some stuff that im6 does.

Thanks for the reply Tom. (BTW I'm not the original poster.)
You are correct- It is a USB drive formatted FAT 32 . After my original post, I erased the drive and started over with a clean slate. This was successful for tape one (about 60 minutes). About twenty minutes into tape two though, it was deja vu all over again. FC froze, I force quit, and lost all of what I had captured from tape one in the process. I unsuccessfully tried to recapture tape one. Same problem again.
Although this is the first time I've tried to capture through FC onto an external drive, I've got three other USB drives full of video I've captured from VHS with the same computer through a DV encoder. When you say USB is not supported by Apple for video applications, does that mean video editing applications? As for complete information, apologies but I'm not exactly sure what other info. you mean. Please let me know. Thanks again. I appreciate the time.

  • Trouble importing from canon t4i into imove

So I have a canon t4i and I've been having trouble importing my videos from my memory card to imovie, and iphoto wont even let me upload it. I tried converting it to AVI (which took a few hours) and It's still not doing anything. I don't know what to do and it's really frustrating.

    Hello Samantha3232,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Some video clips may not import into iMovie when using the Camera Import window
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4485
From the File menu, choose Import > Movies.
In the dialog that appears, select your camera from the sidebar.
Locate and select the video clips on your camera that you would like to import.
    Click the Import button.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Trouble Creating Padded Images for iMovie

i am having trouble creating "padded" images to add to iMovie 09.  I followed the directions here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/10699725?messageID=10699725#10699725?messa geID=10699725) which recommend the following:
Set up an Automator Workflow to
    1. Ask for Photos (You must select one or more photos and hit Select - you can make this easier by putting them in an album beforehand)
    2. Copy Finder Items (give it a folder to copy to- so you can find them easily)
    3. Pad Images. (put a check mark in "scale image before padding" and set for dimensions of your project.
Hit Run and a dialog box will come up asking you to select photos. When you are finished, press SELECT and the Automator script will keep running.
However, each time I run the script I get the following error: The action "Pad Images" was not supplied with the required data."
My files are .jpg and I am running OS X.  Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

If you want a quick response it might make sense to try and contact user TessB directly. I say that only as that person was the one that proposed the Automater Workflow workaround, and that's not exactly something here can answer (Maybe the folks in another forum related to Autmator might be able to help). Unfortunately some solutions aren't as generic or easy to use for everyone as they are for the person who has written them up. I call it the "Works for Me" problem.

  • Trouble transferring iPhone videos to iPhoto & iMovie

I use a iPhone 3Gs and wanted to load all of our photos and videos onto our computer. I haven't had any trouble in the past.
I hook my phone to the computer and I first get a message saying no camera found. Iphoto still recognizes my phone and asks me if I want to transfer the photos/videos over. I click yes and I tell it to not transfer duplicates.
The files transfer without a problem, but at the end, I get a message that about 875 videos are unreadable and cannot be transferred. A decent amount of the beginning of videos transfer, but the majority do not.
Then, when I try to transfer the videos over to iMovie, they won't show up?
I don't know what is going on, but I am very frustrated!
    Thank you.

I can certainly try - but why isn't it recognizing my phone? I guess I should also say that I just upgraded yesterday to the new 4g - but, I was have the same exact issues with my 3Gs as well...so it isn't phone specific.

  • Having trouble installing iMovie HD on a new Mac with Mavericks

I am having trouble installing iMovie HD on a new Mac with Mavericks.
I know that iMovie HD works with Mavericks because we are using it on other Macs successfully.   However, those machines were upgraded starting with OS 10.6.   In other words, iMovie HD was installed on these Macs when the Macs had Snow Leopard.
When I use the iLife 06 disc, I am presented with “You can't open the application “iLife 06” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
I understand that iMovie HD  is universal, not PowerPC.  How can I get past this to install iMovie HD.
    Thanks

    OK, I made some progress.
I used Pacifist (Shareware) to open the iMovie HD 6 install packages from the iLife '06 installer DVD (iMovie.pkg and iMovieThemes_Tiger.pkg) and let Pacifist install them to the right places.
But doesn't iMovie HD 6 require QuickTime 7 to work ?

  • I am having trouble with downloading videos from my Sony HDR-XR160 video camera. iMovie doesnt open up when i connect the camcorder. any suggesions?

i am having trouble with downloading videos from my Sony HDR-XR160 video camera. iMovie doesnt open up when i connect the camcorder. any suggesions?

Looking up your camera online, I found it is capable of 1920 x 1080 Full HD 60p Recording. It's the 60p (60 frames per second Progressive) that's the problem I think. iMovie '11 will do 60i (Interlaced). You might need to convert it from the format the camera currently uses into another format to get it into iMovie. Read more about it on this link here: How to import 60p footage From that message thread comes the recommendation to use ClipWrap to convert the camera's video clips now that they are in 60p:

Use ClipWrap to rewrap to QuickTime. Import the files. Edit in either 59.94 or 29.97. The latter if you want to use the high frame rate for slomo

  • Trouble Tagging/Favoriting in iMovie

I am working on a documentary project and have too much video to put on my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive. I am using a large external hard drive, but it is having trouble with tags and favoriting/rejecting clips. Sometimes the tags/favorites disappear, other times it won't even let me indicate that a clip is a favorite or is rejected. I need to label these clips, but I don't want to spend hours filtering through the video only to lose them when I come back.

Favorites and Tags should work on an external drive.
There is a longstanding bug where if you use the MOVE command in iMovie to move events from the internal drive to the external drive, it does not move the favorites and tags.
The workaround for this is to use the COPY command to copy the event from the internal to the external (or vice versa). After copying, you can then go back and move the extra original copy to the trash so you free up the space.
For more on Moving and Copying see this post.

  • Trouble to read OS 9 iMovie files with OSX 10.4.6 from ext. HD FAT32

First a big "Hello" to all of you, since I am new in this comunity as registered user.
With my (good old dead old) iMac DV400 I saved multiple iMovie projects on an external 250gb firewire harddisk which is FAT32 formated. With OS 9 there was never ever any trouble. Except that the FAT32 caused a very low but sufficient data transfer rate. Beside this the drive behaves and appeared like Mac drive - in OS 9.
Now I have an Intel-iMac (as I said the other is dead) which runs under OSX 10.4. When I access now the ext. HD I see all the junk files as Finder.dat or resource.xxx folder ect. But some files have lost their application. In particular all iMovie related files I cannot open with iMovie neither klicking the icons nor via the iMovie "open..." dialog. All this files have strange icon looking like the old DOS c:/ -prompt. In addition I realized that my very few mp3 files without the ".mp3" extension were also not recognized as iTunes files. I had to rename them and added a ".mp3". (I had never such issues with OS 9x).
Since there a plenty of iMove files (all project files, all clips) and plenty work done (movie taking, movie editing) I really like to recover all this files.
Any ideas out there? Any older thread available - here or elsewhere in the net?
    Thanks, Joe
